Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

B’Rock Orchestra B’Rock Orchestra was set up in Ghent in 2005 on the basis of an urge for renewal and rejuvenation in the world of early music. The selected international musicians specialise in historically well-founded performance practices. They distinguish themselves by their open mind, flexibility of repertoire and playing style. In the choices it makes for its concert programmes, B’Rock combines established baroque works with the lesser-known repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, the orchestra pursues a bold and innovative programme policy in which early and contemporary music meet and enrich each other. It focuses especially on giving first performances of new music written with historical instruments in mind. But the orchestra also has a reputation for cross-genre productions. Early music in combination with theatre, visual art and/or video also forms part of the orchestra’s DNA.
B’Rock Orchestra regularly engages prominent guest conductors and soloists such as René Jacobs, Jérémie Rhorer, Leonardo García Alarcón, Peter Dijkstra, Bejun Mehta, Alexander Melnikov, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Dmitry Sinkovsky, Sophie Karthäuser and many others. B’Rock also frequently collaborates with leading choral ensembles such as RIAS Kammerchor, Collegium Vocale Gent, the Nederlands Kamerkoor and Cappella Amsterdam. B’Rock has developed structural partnerships in the fields of opera and musical theatre with De Munt/ La Monnaie and Muziektheater Transparant. The orchestra gives around 45 concerts every season, both in Belgium and abroad. It is, for example, a regular guest at Muziekcentrum de Bijloke, Bozar, KlaraFestival, De Munt/La Monnaie, deSingel, AMUZ, Concertgebouw Bruges, MAfestival and the Festival of Flanders Mechelen. Internationally, the orchestra has already been invited to numerous major concert halls and festivals such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Cité de la Musique Paris, Kölner Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin, Wigmore Hall, Holland Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Operadagen Rotterdam, Rheingau Musik Festival, Bremen Musikfest, Innsbrucker Festwochen der alten Musik, Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, Styriarte in Graz and Wratislawia Cantans.

Dmitry Sinkovsky Artistic leader and solo violin Virtuoso violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 2005, where he had been studying with Alexander Kirov in preparation for an international career; it was then that his curiosity led him to earlier repertoire. A meeting at that time with Baroque violinist and early music pioneer Maria Leonhardt convinced him to change course and concentrate on historical performance practice. He has since taken innumerable prizes in major competitions from the Premio Bonporti in Italy (2005) to the Bach Competition in Leipzig (2006), the Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges (First prize, audience prize and critics’ prize, 2008)
and first prize at the Telemann Competition in Magdeburg (2011). Critics and the public alike have praised his ability to “play from the heart” while interpreting music of dazzling difficulty with ease. In 2007, after having already begun a notable career as a violinist, Dmitry Sinkovsky decided to seriously pursue his talent as a countertenor as well. To this end he worked with vocal coaches Michael Chance, Marie Daveluy and finally Jana Ivanilova, with whom he studied for seven years in Moscow. His vocal repertoire includes roles from Handel’s operas (Rinaldo, Giulio Cesare, Arsace, Bertarido, Polinesso), solo cantatas and oratories, to Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and J.S. Bach’s Passions and cantatas. Sinkovsky’s countertenor voice is distinguished by its wide range of timbral colours, its lightness and agility. His unique ability to switch from singing to the violin and back again in concerts has earned him great admiration and enthusiasm from the public. Dmitry Sinkovsky continues to be much in demand as a soloist, concertmaster and conductor, performing extensively in Europe, Russia, Canada, Australia and the USA. He heads the ensemble La Voce Strumentale, which he founded in Moscow in 2011, and works with some of the finest Baroque orchestras today including Il Giardino Armonico (Italy), B’Rock (Belgium) and Concerto Köln (Germany).

Sinkovsky has recorded for both Naïve and the Russian label Caro Mitis. His recording Per Pisendel, on which he is both violin soloist and conductor, was released in 2013 as part of Naïve’s Vivaldi Edition series and was awarded a Diapason d’Or. Sinkovsky continues to teach violin and viola at the Moscow Conservatory, a post he has held since 2005. As a laureate of the Jumpstart Jr. Competition in the Netherlands, Dmitry Sinkovsky has been loaned a superb violin by Francesco Ruggeri (1675).

In a nutshell, our view of creation and production is defined by an innovative and deliberate approach to tradition. We want to offer more than just a fine concert, entertainment, relaxation or an agreeable interlude. The music of the past can also help us to look at today’s world with its many artistic, social and societal challenges. This is why there must always be a connection with the present day. This requires an effort from both the musicians and the listeners, but the reward is the experience of what is happening now, not what was being experienced hundreds of years ago.

Our core repertoire remains the music of the baroque and classical periods (from about 1600 to 1820), with a particular focus on the 1760s and 1770s and the transition to the Sturm und Drang of the classical period. This somewhat neglected stylistic period is closely related to the late baroque, but at the same time shows signs of a changing worldview. Inspired by Maurizio Nannucci’s artwork All Art Has Been Contemporary, we see our programme as a contemporary soundscape in which early, recent and/ or new music enhance one another, with plenty of room for experimentation, confrontation and reflection. We actively examine the potential of our historically informed instruments for the creation and production of new and recent music (20th century music). We believe that the playing techniques, forms of expression, performance problems and timbres characteristic of old instruments are able to stimulate and challenge today’s composers. A contemporary soundscape also implies a focus on music theatre, opera and/or other forms of multi-disciplinary work. We are convinced that the traditional concert ritual (established in the 19th century) is gradually reaching its end. New models are needed to hold onto today’s demanding audiences: from scenic concerts and orchestral theatre through to innovative music theatre to hybrid projects that combine music and film or music and word.

Vivaldi and his contemporaries painted with sounds. Their mission was to strike the listener with music that is so evocative that it is almost palpable. Orchestral works such as Fux's “Le dolcezze e l’amerezze della notte”, Heinrich Biber's Battalia and Telemann's Concerto “Die Relinge” (The Frogs) unfold like cartoons in sound. The bittersweet night, a wounded musketeer, spluttering drinkers and croaking frogs courting one another: a great variety of scenes appear to the mind's eye – at first subdued, then exuberant, often extremely humorous. Vivaldi's spectacular Concerto “Per la solennità di San Lorenzo” and his Concerto grossi also conjure up a wide range of human emotions.

Fux’s renown for many years after his death rested on his 1725 publication, Gradus ad Parnassum, a manual in the art of composition, as well as a treatise in strict counterpoint. First written in Latin, it was later translated into German, Italian, English and French. It was used by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and many others, and indeed it can still be an important tool in the teaching of counterpoint and the art of composition. It has only been relatively recently that his value as a composer has been fully recognised. His output was prodigious, encompassing 94 Masses, nine Requiems and innumerable other sacred works, as well as 22 operas and a great deal of music for various instrumental groups. He was highly industrious during his composing life, and he lived to the great age (for those days) of 81.

Born in Hinterfeld in Styria, Fux most likely had music lessons in Graz from the local organist and Kantor, and quite possibly sang in the choir. He studied at the university in Graz, but left before graduating to enrol at the Jesuit University in Ingolstadt, where his subjects were languages, logic, music and law. From 1685 for three years he was the organist at St Moritz, Ingolstadt, and by the 1690s he was living in Vienna where he became organist at the Schottenkirche, relinquishing the post in 1702. In 1698 he was appointed court composer to the Emperor Leopold Joseph I, and subsequently to Charles VI. Appointed Deputy Kapellmeister in 1711, he was promoted to Kapellmeister four years later, and held that position for the rest of his life. The Overture in D minor N4 is made up of seven movements, with the first movement, a Frenchstyle overture, providing the core around which the rest of the piece orbits; its opening dotted rhythms eventually give way to a flying fugal passage. Three of the following movements are named after birds – a nightingale, quail and cuckoo – with the latter bringing the whole piece to a charming and stately conclusion.

Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber Battalia à 10 in D major, C61 Biber was the most outstanding violinist of the 17th century, and also a fine composer who produced many Masses and other sacred works along with much instrumental music. Naturally, much of his music is for the violin, and in a good deal of this he makes use of scordatura, which means using special tunings to achieve special effects. Amongst these compositions are the famous Mystery, or Rosary, Sonatas for violin and bass. The composer most likely performed these at the end of services in October, the month devoted to the Rosary Mysteries at Salzburg Cathedral. Other instrumental works include ballets and sonatas for various interesting combinations. He also wrote several operas. Biber was born in Wartenburg in Bohemia, and possibly had his early music lessons from the local organist. He was employed by Prince Eggenberg in Graz, and in 1668 entered the service of the Bishop of Olmütz as valet de chambre and musician. Two years later he was sent on an errand to buy new instruments, but he seized the opportunity to leave Graz illegally and instead entered the Archbishop of Salzburg’s entourage, where, having been classed amongst the porters and stokers of fires in Graz, he rose rapidly in social status, partly due to the Archbishop’s keenness for music on stringed instruments. The Bishop of Olmütz was not best pleased by this defection, but refrained from any punitive action, merely delaying his release letter until 1676. B e t we e n 1 6 7 6 a n d 1 6 8 4 B i b e r d e d i c a t e d four editions of his instrumental music to the Archbishop. The Emperor Leopold I was so impressed with Biber’s playing that he appointed him Deputy Kapellmeister in 1679 and Kapellmeister in 1684; on Biber’s second application he raised him to the rank of Knight, with the title Biber von Bibern, in 1690. It is curious that for such

an outstanding virtuoso – the Paganini of his day, one could say – there seems to be no record of his having toured in that role. The Battalia continues a tradition of works describing battles, begun in the 16th century, and it contains a number of special effects such as rebounding pizzicato on the double bass, rapid note repetitions, and possibly even playing with the wood of the bow. Biber’s Battalia is dedicated to Bacchus, god of wine, vegetation and theatre, so clearly it is going to be an entertaining piece. The composer’s lively sense of humour can be heard in many places, and the second movement’s title gives more than a hint at this – in English it can be roughly translated as, “A profligate society of all sorts of humour.” Perhaps the word “humour” in this context means “emotions”. In this movement, eight songs in different keys are played, starting at different times, producing the sort of effect which Charles Ives enjoyed, centuries later. Perhaps this is meant to be the various groups of soldiers each singing their own patriotic songs, which, of course, do not fit in with any of the others’. The work moves towards the actual battle scene, “Die Schlacht”, before a final lament for the wounded, which contains typical descending chromaticisms. This is a work of amazing invention and exuberance.

Antonio Vivaldi Concerto in F major, RV569 This concerto, one of around an astonishing 500 by the composer, is scored for violin, two oboes, two horns, bassoon, strings and basso continuo, and makes use of a solo cello in the third movement. The writing is as extraordinarily inventive as in any of his other works, of which there are a great number, encompassing Masses, other sacred works and at least 21 operas. Vivaldi was born in Venice, his father being a barber before being engaged as a violinist at St Mark’s in 1685. The young Antonio took Holy Orders in 1703, and in that year he was appointed maestro di violin at the Pio Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage for girls, with which he remained affiliated for the rest of his life. On account of his red hair he became known as “the red priest.” During his long career he forged an international reputation; in order to do this he had to ask permission to travel from the governors of the orphanage. In 1709 they voted against keeping him on. Two years later, however, he was voted back, and was reappointed yearly until March 1716, when again the vote went against him. Strangely, only a few months later in May Vivaldi was appointed maestro de’ concerti, a position of yet more responsibility. It seems that whatever reasons the governors may have had for getting rid of Vivaldi, in the end they could not do without him in some capacity. Meanwhile, Vivaldi’s reputation was spreading throughout Europe, with Etienne Roger of Amsterdam publishing L’estro armonico Op 3, consisting of 12 concertos for one, two and four solo violins. This publication served to spread Vivaldi’s work far and wide, especially in Germany. J.S. Bach famously transcribed concertos by Vivaldi, including several from this Op 3. At the height of his fame Vivaldi was in demand for works of all sorts, including operas, and earning considerable amounts of money. His health, however, had never been good, as he suffered from bronchial asthma. In his later years Vivaldi became ill and eventually died in Venice, being buried in a pauper’s grave.

The Concerto in F begins with striking and energetic gestures and continues with immense verve. The slow movement brings a violin solo, and the final movement is enormous fun with the violin and oboes contrasted along with little comments from the horns. In each of Vivaldi’s approximately 500 concertos there is always something new and entertaining with his deft use of the forces in play and his boundless invention.

As a child born into a comfortable background, Telemann received a fine musical education, studying singing and keyboard from the age of 10. As well as this, he taught himself the recorder, violin and zither. By transcribing scores he learned the rudiments of composition, and was soon producing works of various kinds. His parents, anxious that he might think of a musical career, later confiscated his musical instruments. Of course, he continued to engage in musical activities, and eventually music won out over any other course.

In 1701 Telemann began studying law at Leipzig University, but very soon his musical ability came to light and the mayor commissioned him to write music for the Thomaskirche and the Nikolaikirche. Music took over, and he then founded a collegium musicum [a musical society] of 40 students that gave public concerts. It was in this period that he produced much music and his career began to take off. During his lifetime Telemann also held positions at Eisenach, Frankfurt and Hamburg, normally responsible for the music in the local churches, but also in the towns as well. Telemann was a hugely prolific composer, completing approximately 1,043 cantatas for the church, 46 Passions, many operas and a great deal of instrumental music of all sorts; Handel wrote of him that he “could write a church piece in eight parts with the same expedition another would write a letter.” Telemann’s music is always lively and often full of humour, meaning that a piece subtitled “The Frogs” is no surprise. In his orchestral music he was the first to make regular use of the ritornello form in the fast movements of his concertos. In this concerto the violin introduces the frog’s note – A – by alternating the open string with the stopped note on the D string to comic effect in the first movement, and in the Adagio the soloist sings a song, perhaps of froggy courtship by the water. The final high-stepping Menuet contains a quicker alternativement and could depict the frolicking frog offspring. The whole work is as delightful as any this remarkable composer ever produced.

By far the greatest numbers of works in the Fux catalogue are for the church, and after that, operas, of which he produced at least 22. Instrumental music comes low in terms of sheer numbers, but there is still much of it. He produced 53 trio sonatas, 12 sonatas and 12 partitas for two violins and continuo as well as a number of concertos and orchestral overtures.

Of some 24 orchestral works this concerto appears to be the only one with such a specific title. This title – “The Sweetness and Bitterness of the Night” – is interesting, as it shows that what follows is not going to be entirely gentle night music. The first movement depicts the night watchman at his task; after the following minuet and trio comes a nocturnal fantasy, and then we are into the realm of the snore, ronfatore, before a serene aria closes a highly distinctive work.

This Concerto, for the feast day of Saint Lawrence, was most likely composed for performance in August 1716, and perhaps for the convent in Venice dedicated to the saint. It is possible that Vivaldi himself played the solo part, or perhaps his contemporary Johann Georg Pisendel, who is known to have copied out the music.

The first movement is generally very vigorous, followed by the slow Grave movement, which is like an extended accompanied improvisation in which the soloist appears to wander wherever he or she wishes, punctuated at intervals by a descending scale from the strings. At the end the sober scales win the day. The final Allegro contains greatly contrasted episodes, and has a written out cadenza towards the end, which uses material from an earlier concerto; cadenzas in Vivaldi’s day did not necessarily make use of the main material of the movement itself. There is then a short final ritornello. Interestingly, Vivaldi rearranged this work for a celebration in Amsterdam later, altering the instrumentation, and composing a fresh slow movement.
