Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

In 1929, Vasily Shukshin was born into a peasant family in the village of Srostky in the Altai region of Siberia. He went to a grammar school, then graduated from an automobile college in Biysk, and after two years returned to his home village and started working at a kolkhoz (Soviet communal farm) before taking on varied jobs including as a metalwork rigger at a turbine plant in Kaluga and at the tractor factory in Vladimir. In 1949 Shukshin joined the Soviet Army and served in the navy, first stationed at the Baltic Sea then at the Black Sea. In 1953 he was decommissioned for medical reasons, and returned to Srostky where he took up office as the village school principal and Russian language and literature teacher. In 1954 he enrolled at the Cinematography Institute, before in 1958 landing his first role in the feature film Two Fyodors directed by Marlen Khutsiev. In the same year he printed his first short story named Two on a Wagon. 1963 saw the publication of Shukshin’s first novel The Villagers, and also his employment as a staff director for the Gorky Film Studio, where he later directed his first film There is Such a Lad. From the mid-1960s several films directed by Shukshin appeared on Soviet cinema screens: There is Such a Lad (1964), Your Son and Brother (1965), Strange People (1969) and Happy Go Lucky (1972). From then, and to the end of his life, Shukshin was widely recognised as an outstanding actor, director and writer, his fame preceding him. In 1968 the Soviet Writer publishing house published his collection of short stories entitled There in the Distance, then in 1973 they published another collection entitled Characters, and in 1974 came Conversations under the Full Moon. In 1974 Shukshin released his film Red Kalina, considered a milestone in Soviet cinematography, in which he directed, wrote the screenplay, and played the lead role. But later that year on 2 October, in the middle of shooting a scene in Russia’s Volgograd region, Shukshin suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Shukshin is buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery. In 1976 he was posthumously awarded the Lenin Prize.

Everyone says Sergei’s wife Clara is a wicked, fretful and stupid woman. But he loves and admires her. Sergei loves her independence, her wit, her profession, her gait, until one day he discovers a secret about Clara that will transform his life.
Boots The village men are on their way to town to buy farming equipment spares. In a shop, Sergei sees a pair of ladies' boots that are very beautiful and expensive – almost a whole month of his salary. He decides to buy them for his wife Klavka, without even considering the most obvious question – will they fit? Microscope Factory worker Andrey buys a microscope from town with all his savings, dreaming that he and his son will become scientists one day. He lies to his wife that he has lost the money and that the microscope is a prize he received at work. When the lie is finally uncovered, what will happen to Andrey and his microscope? Ignaty’s Arrival One summer Ignaty comes from town to visit his elderly parents, the first time in five years. He brings presents from the town and introduces his wife to his parents and brother. They should rejoice at the reunion, so why are they sitting in silence instead?
Oh, A Wife Saw Her Husband Off To Paris Kolya came to know his wife Valya through correspondence while he was in the army. After his discharge, he went directly to see her in Moscow, and soon their daughter was born. Kolya realises he is trapped; he misses his home village and keeps wondering – what has gone wrong with his life? Cutting Them Down To Size An elderly village woman is visited by her son and his wife, both city-dwellers, both intellectuals, both with PhDs. But the village men dislike citydwellers, especially those who used to live in the country but have since migrated to cities and built careers there. They are waiting for Gleb Kapustin, a well-read and spiteful country fellow, to cut the distinguished guests down to size. Stiopka “Before bedtime people become kinder. A day has been lived through…Tomorrow there’ll be another day and other businesses. As for now one has a chance to take rest, have a smoke, grumble at fate and think God-knows-what thoughts: that this life, this fate could have been a little bit better. But after all, even this life is not all that bad”. On one of these evenings Stepan comes back home having served a term in prison. He has been released earlier than expected, so the joy is overwhelming. His family, friends and neighbours begin to sing and dance, but no one knows why he was released early.

故事後,恍然大悟─他的故事純樸、睿智而引人
筆下看似落伍的蘇聯時代相遇,同時是活在舒克
入勝,讓我深受啟發。我並非愚昧無知,自然知
辛故事背景中農村平民生活的真實寫照。我們所
道以往俄羅斯劇場如何處理鄉村題材,因此決定
有人─照片設計莫妮卡.朴梅爾、作為導演的
不讓現代莫斯科演員穿上羊皮外套和油布軍靴。
我、演員、外國人、觀眾,都在這個十字路口彼

Director’s Note When I was offered the opportunity to stage a production in Moscow with a Russian cast, I thought that I ought to choose something very Russian for my material, something which would also allow me to discover something new about the Russian people. I recalled Shukshin’s films, which I watched when I was just a child, and I went on reading his short stories before the revelation came to me – just how simple, tasteful and wise these stories are. But of course I wasn’t born yesterday, and I know how village themes have been introduced on Russian stages in the past. Therefore I also decided that I wouldn’t dress this contemporary Moscow cast in sheepskin coats and tarpaulin boots; it was already clear enough that Soviet village life was entirely different to the world of contemporary Moscow. I didn’t believe that the actors should dress up as villagers and try to copy this unique community way of life, one which made no allowances
Alvis Hermanis whatsoever for even the slightest hint of phoniness. We were guided by quite the opposite idea: in the production we emphasise the fact that these are two entirely different worlds – a modern one, and one that is completely alien by contemporary Moscow standards. There’s a wide gap that separates us from that world, and we wanted to accentuate both the gap, and the bridges which connect us with the other side. Our production is a meeting of a contemporary Moscow cast with the somewhat old-fashioned Soviet period that Shukshin depicted, but it also features real life portraits of the inhabitants of the village which was the setting for all of Shukshin’s stories. It is at this ultimate crossroads that we all meet each other: photo artist Monica Pormale, myself as a director, and everyone else as well – foreigners, and audience members too. Each one of us has their own understanding of how Shukshin should be performed best. He was a great writer, and his legacy has found its way into the future.

The Name of Vasily In 2008, prior to the world premiere of Shukshin’s Stories, Afisha magazine interviewed the creators of this production and asked them about their journey to the birthplace of Vasily Shukshin – the village of Srostky – and also about the ways in which they thought the world was going to change. Alvis Hermanis (AH): In Moscow sometimes I switch on the TV, and there’s this Sunday TV show called The Name of Russia. There they have some bunch of morons on a list [each one nominated as the most notable personality in Russian history]… I’m sure that Shukshin would have been a much more appropriate candidate for such a title, even more so than Pushkin or Dostoevsky, who were affected more by the Western way of life. I believe Shukshin, on the other hand, is the very embodiment of Russia. Evgeny Mironov (EM): We are all grateful that Alvis made this choice. It turned out that we had lost our treasures but Alvis as an outside observer [Hermanis is Latvian] had a much better field of view. He said “this is your gold, your currency, the most precious thing you have, the purest – it’s the kindness, the innocence, and the humbleness”. AH: “The People” – it’s a sor t of mystical conspiracy. There they are – all the obvious features but there is something else too, a mystical secret which unites the individuals and make them the People. As a foreigner you can approach this secret, but only so far; you can never get closer. I’ve always been intrigued by this. Since my student years, even my romantic adventures almost always happened with girls from other countries. Chulpan Khamatova (CK): For me the visit to Srostky completely changed my attitude towards this production. From my contemporary Moscow perspective, some things were simply shocking. On the very first day, when we’d just arrived at the village, we saw this broad country woman carrying buckets on a shoulder yoke; not even taking a look at us she strolled past and into the river, filled her
buckets with water, and was on her way. But I had been so sure that shoulder yokes for buckets were obsolete, and nobody ever used them anymore. And there was this old woman – you know, they were all treating us with meals and singing to us all the time – so this old woman asked me on our last day, “Listen, daughter, what town do you come from – is it Biysk or Barnaul?”1 EM: Luckily that village seemed like a normal one. As in nothing had been renovated, painted, you know, there were no special Shukshin parks with gravel paths. It was common, flesh-and-blood people living there. AH: As far as I know they were not on good terms with Shukshin at the time. They didn’t take him seriously at first. Alexander Grishin: They said “He is writing about us in a nasty way, like we’re a bunch of freaks. All of it is untrue”. Alexander Novin: He used many real names of his relatives and friends in his writing. AH: We also actually met some of the prototype characters, for example from the “Cutting them down to size” story. It turned out that the story’s main character Gleb Kapustin was in fact Shukshin’s classmate. CK: As far as I understood they all seemed to have studied in the same class at school. The old folk we met there, they all said they’d sat at the same desk with him. Dmitry Zhuravlev: I approached this Gleb Kapustin person and asked him: “Tell us something about Shukshin, after all you were friends, weren’t you?” His every story started in the same manner; “I remember we got into this fight…”, and then he concluded “but most importantly, make sure you remember that he was a humble person, never looked down his nose at anyone.” 1 Biysk and Barnaul – provincial towns in the Altai region of Russia

Yulia Svezhakova: When they erected Shukshin’s monument his mother said “They have given him such a wrinkled jacket; couldn’t they have ironed it? He never wore his jacket wrinkled”. EM: You would enter someone’s garden and they would always make sure you were offered refreshment. Someone would cry out “Woman, bring it here”. And someone would bring a melon, straight from the garden. I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that melons are grown in the Altai region. And the melons are so sour! But they are so immensely proud of their melons. AH: Obviously in our eyes they were exotic characters, same as we were for them. After all, we’re making this production about how these two worlds meet. EM: Well, they may be exotic for you but not for me: I used to live in a similar village called Tatishevo-5. It was a military garrison, and my aunt and uncle lived there. I remember this time when my uncle’s cat died; my uncle hammered together a bunch of wooden boards and produced a small coffin for the cat. He tied a piece of rope to it, and he dragged the coffin all the way through the village, singing bitterly about his cat. The whole village was looking at him in amusement. But he had lost a true friend. The cat, he had lived for some 40 years. My uncle was singing in tears, dragging the coffin uphill. It was such an artistic moment, such a Shukshin-like moment. AH: That Gleb Kapustin person said to me that village life as it used to be has gone for good. The Altai mountains are close by the village, and they are going to turn it into a sort of Swiss resort soon: skiing runs, large casinos, free trade zones. As Shukshin would have said, the people are ready to embrace the vice.
CK: They told me how they used to live in the village. They would dip their feet in a puddle of mud, and when the mud went dry from a distance it gave an impression as if the person had shoes on the feet. AH: The world is bound to change. Nobody knows what will happen a year from now. But I strongly suspect that the idea of cities is running out of steam. We will live to see the time when city dwellers will seek opportunities to move away into the countryside. EM: And this will be fueled by economic necessity. Even now it costs a fortune to buy a big city apartment while the countryside offers vast empty fields. People are bound to move there because people are getting poorer now, and it’s a worldwide trend. Europe and America are running out of riches, and a new mindset will inevitably come to replace the existing one. AH: This is what’s happening in the Baltic countries now: the young are gravitating towards the cities while the older, more accomplished people are seeking opportunities to move into the countryside. Moreover, now modern technology provides opportunities to pursue many more trades, even if you live in the middle of a forest. CK: Soon it looks like we’ll even be able to perform using Skype. Theatre of Nations is based in a historic building in the center of Moscow; previously a private drama theatre founded by Fyodor Korsh in 1885, it also used to be the largest privately-owned theatre in the state. In its 130 years of existence the building has witnessed many major events with significance for the performing arts, while the theatre has also been reformed numerous times, changing its name, team and artistic objectives.

The Theatre’s current phase of development started in 2006 with the arrival of a new artistic director – Evgeny Mironov, an honoured artist of Russia and holder of many state awards. Today the Theatre of Nations utilises an operational model that is unique in both Moscow and Russia: it rejects the employment of a staff company of actors and creative personnel, with each performance created using production planning designed individually for the project in question. The main objective of the Theatre of Nations is to establish an international theatre dialogue and bring the best forces of international theatre to its stage. In the theatre’s current playbill there are numerous performances by leading international stage directors, including Thomas Ostermeier, Robert Wilson, Robert Lepage and Alvis Hermanis. The Theatre has frequently received major theatre and cinema awards; since 2006 these have included several “Golden Mask”, “Crystal Turandot”, “Nika”, “Made in Russia” and “TEFI” awards.

The Theatre of Nations has also strived to establish a theatrical structure that erases boundaries of genre, style and form. Therefore the theatre has been paying special attention to its Small Stage – an experimental venue designed for young Russian stage directors, choreographers and musicians to bring their ideas to life. Theatre of Nations is also the founder of “The Small Town Theatre Festival of Russia” – the only major festival that brings together all of the significant productions from the regional theatres of Russia.

Alvis Hermanis
Director / Set Design
A graduate of the acting school at the Latvian state conservatory, Alvis Hermanis spent the 1980s acting on stage and screen, before starting on a new path in directing at the beginning of the 1990s. In 1997 Hermanis was appointed as artistic director of New Riga Theatre, which under his lead became one of the most prominent European theatres, recognised around the world. Hermanis became famous after his 2002 production of Nicolai Gogol’s The Inspector, and his subsequent productions have been equally successful. Among these are The Long Life (2007 Golden Mask award winner for best foreign production), Sonia, Sounds of Silence, Ice, Latvian Stories, Latvian Love and others. In 2009 he staged Late Neighbours at Munich Kammerspiele, based on short stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer, and then The Family at the Vienna Burgtheater, based on a play by Tracy Letts. In 2010 he staged Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s The Maids of Wilko at the Emilia Theatre in Italy. More recently, Hermanis has turned to opera. He has staged many productions, including Verdi’s Il trovatore at the Salzburg Festival (2014), Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust at Opera de Paris (2015), and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at La Scala (2016). This production of Shukshin’s Stories was Hermanis’s Russian debut as a director.

In 1993 Monica Pormale graduated from the textile department of Riga Applied Arts College, and then in 2000 graduated from Latvia Academy of Arts. That same year she began collaborating with director Alvis Hermanis. She has created sets for his productions of The Long Life, Latvian Stories, The Idiot and others. Pormale has also worked with numerous other directors, including Girts Ecis, Galina Polishchuk and Andrejs Zagars. Monica Pormale is an accomplished photographer who has created and exhibited numerous installation works. Exhibitions and artistic projects involving her work have been held in Latvia and other European countries; works include Everything Will Be All Right, commissioned by the Berlin Festival; After the Wall (Budapest, Berlin, Stockholm); Baltic Time (Zagreb and Innsbruck) and others. Evgeny Mironov
Artistic Director of the Theatre of Nations (Russia) / Actor
Evgeny Mironov was born in Saratov, Russia. In 1990 he graduated from Moscow Art Theatre Academy and joined the company of Oleg Tabakov’s Studio Theatre. As a guest star at the Moscow Art Theatre, he took the role of Treplev in The Seagull and appeared as George Pigden in No. 13, the Russian adaptation of Ray Cooney's Out of Order. Mironov has also starred in several legendary productions staged by leading European masters, such as Peter Stein's Oresteia and Hamlet, Declan Donnellan's Boris Godunov, and Eimuntas Nekrošius' The Cherry Orchard. Since December 2006 Mironov has held the position of artistic director of the Theatre of Nations (Russia), also starring in numerous productions including Shukshin's Stories (directed by Alvis Hermanis), Miss Julie (directed by Thomas Ostermeier), Hamlet | Collage (directed by Robert Lepage), Pushkin's Fairy Tales (directed by Robert Wilson) and Ivanov (directed by Timofey Kulyabin). Mironov is also one of Russia’s most prominent cinema stars, with roles in films such as The Life of a Kerosene Dealer, Metamorphosis, and The Age of Pioneers among many others. Mironov has also appeared in leading roles in numerous TV series. Mironov is a two time winner of the State Prize of Russia, three time winner of the Golden Mask Award and a member of the Arts and Culture Council at the office of the President of the Russian Federation.

Chulpan Khamatova Actress Chulpan Khamatova is a graduate of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. Her roles at the Theatre of Nations have included parts in Miss Julie directed by Thomas Ostermeier, Shukshin’s Stories directed by Alvis Hermanis and The Taming of the Shrew directed by Roman Feodori. For the first time in her career she performed as dancer at the Theatre of Nations in Anna Sigalova’s Poor Lisa. Khamatova is a prominent cinema star; her works include The Time of the Dancer, Goodbye, Lenin! and The Case of Kukotskiy. Khamatova is a winner of numerous awards, including the Russian State Prize, Golden Mask and Golden Eagle.

Yulia Svezhakova Actress Yulia Svezhakova graduated from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts in 1995 and was invited to join the company of the Moscow Young Generation Theatre. There she performed numerous roles, including Katerina in Genrietta Yanovskaya's production of Alexander Ostrovsky's The Storm, Anna Sergeevna in Ginkas's production of Chekhov's The Lady with the Lapdog, and Sylvetta in Andrei Droznin Junior's production of Edmond Rostand's The Romantics. Svezhakova has performed in numerous films including: The Barracks and The Funeral Party. She has also appeared in numerous television series, including Moscow Central District, The Sorcerer and Children of the Arbat. Svezhakova was honored with a Crystal Turandot award in 1997 for her performance in The Storm.

Dmitry Zhuravlev Actor Dmitry Zhuravlev graduated in 2004 from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. After graduation he joined the company of the Moscow Young Generation Theatre, where he appeared in shows such as A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Genrietta Yanovskaya and Roberto Zucco directed by Kama Ginkas. He also took part in the production of The Cherry Orchard directed by Eimuntas Nekrošius. At the Theatre of Nations Zhuravlev has appeared in productions including Swedish Matchstick directed by Nikita Grinshpun, The Taming of the Shrew directed by Roman Feodori and Pushkin’s Fairy Tales directed by Robert Wilson. Zhuravlev is also a film actor.

Alexander Grishin Actor In 2004 Alexander Grishin graduated from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. In the same year he joined the Russian Academic Youth Theatre. There he took part in productions including The Idiot directed by Régis Obadia, Invitation to a Beheading directed by Pavel Safonov, Under Pressure 1-3 directed by Egor Peregudov and others. In 2010 Grishin directed a production of The Dawns Here are Quiet based on a novel by Boris Vailiev, in which he also played the role of Vaskov. Grishin has appeared in films including Trio directed by Alexander Proshkin, Rascals directed by Alexander Atanasyan and Breakaway directed by Alexander Mindanze; TV series credits include The Brigade, Life is a Hunting Ground, and Law and Order.

Alexander Novin Actor Alexander Novin graduated in 2001 from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. At the Theatre of Nations Novin has appeared in productions including Killer Joe directed by Javor Gardev, A Clockwork Orange directed by Filipp Grigoryan and Pushkin’s Fairy Tales directed by Robert Wilson. Novin has appeared on screen in films including The Yugra Gold directed by Igor Shavlak, The Drill Site directed by Leonid Kulagin and Norveg directed by Alyona Zvantsova; he has also appeared in TV series such as The Apostle directed by Gennady Sidorov. Novin is also a master kick boxer and general producer of the Third Rome film studio; he was executive producer of the Diamond Seekers TV series (2011), and the film The Age of the Pioneers (2017).

Pavel Akimkin graduated from the Gnesin Academy of Music, and then from the stage direction department of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. Since 2006 Akimkin has collaborated closely with the SounDrama studio as an actor and composer; he was also involved as a composer for Measure for Measure (at the Pushkin Theatre) and The Inspector (at the Ermolova Theatre). At the Theatre of Nations Akimkin has appeared in productions including: Swedish Matchstick directed by Nikita Grinshpun, Shukshin’s Stories directed by Alvis Hermanis and The Blue Blue Bird directed by Oleg Glushkov. His film work includes Break Loose directed by Alexei Uchitel and Two Antons directed by Leonid Mazor. Akimkin received the 2009 MK newspaper prize for the best musical direction of a drama production for his work on Shukshin’s Stories.
