香港藝術節今年踏入第4 6屆,再度為來自世 界各地的觀眾獻上精彩紛呈的藝術盛宴,讓 香港這個文化大都會更添生色。 今年藝術節預備了各式各樣的表演節目, 古典及當代藝術元素俱全,凸顯本港豐富 多元的文化特色。短短一個月內將有約1 3 0 場音樂、舞蹈、戲劇、歌劇等表演舉行, 讓一眾藝術愛好者目不暇給。 一如以往,本屆藝術節除了請來本地和海 外藝術家演繹引人入勝的代表作品,亦悉 心安排各項外展活動。為培養青少年對藝 術的興趣,「香港藝術節青少年之友」計 劃讓本地學生有機會欣賞藝術節節目和參 與全方位藝術活動。此外,藝術節又透過 工作坊、後台參觀和大師班等「加料節 目」,讓觀眾一睹藝術節重點節目的幕後 創作過程,大開眼界。 政府致力推動本地文化藝術發展,亦樂見贊 助商和捐款者鼎力支持,攜手把香港藝術 節打造成為享譽國際的藝壇盛事。我衷心感 謝藝術節團隊多年來盡心盡力,為我們帶來 這項高質素的文化活動,令本港藝壇百花齊 放,蓬勃發展。 謹祝第4 6屆香港藝術節圓滿成功,各位表演 嘉賓和觀眾朋友共享一段精彩難忘的藝術旅 程。

Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

愛沙尼亞之聲成立二十多年來,一直在約翰 - 艾

聲亦提供了一個讓大家不斷發掘新事物的學習過

Vox Clamantis Over 20 years into its existence, the vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis continues to revolve around its leader Jaan-Eik Tulve. With a number of singers coming and going, one man and his musical vision has remained consistently at the centre of the group. The journey all started with Tulve’s time studying Gregorian chant in Paris during the early 1990s. Back in Estonia, he formed Vox Clamantis in 1996 to continue singing the old plainsongs that make up the historical foundations of Western art music. The ensemble’s various line-ups have always been like gatherings of kindred spirits, devotees of the idea that the essence of Gregorian chant can reach beyond its stylistic boundaries and freely blend with music of the modern age as well as other cultures. Be it the electric guitars of Weekend Guitar Trio or the oud of Yair Dalal, the nyckelharpa of Marco Ambrosini or energetic compositions by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür, the voice of Tunisia’s Dhafer Youssef or the electronic journeys of Estonia’s Sven Grünberg, Helena Tulve’s delicate sound-webs or Arianna Savall’s pure singing, the list of Vox Clamantis’ collaborations is always growing, remaining open to new influences.

also participated in the recording of Arvo Pärt’s Grammy-winning album Adam’s Lament, while in 2013, their recording of Liszt’s Via Crucis for Mirare with French pianist Jean-Claude Pennetier won a Diapason d’Or award. Vox Clamantis’s singing is also to be heard in Paolo Sorrentino’s film The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza) that won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. More recently, Vox Clamantis recorded Arvo Pärt’s The Deer's Cry (ECM, 2016) winning a Diapason d'Or award, a Choc in French magazine Classica, the Monthly Choice award in BBC Music Magazine and the Estonian Classical Album of the Year award. Vox Clamantis continues to maintain a special connection with Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, dating back to 1999 when the ensemble started to perform Pärt’s organ piece Annum per Annum mixed with liturgical chant, an innovation that met with the composer’s approval. Since then, the group’s contact with Pärt’s music has deepened, creating a relationship that today is warm and friendly rather than simply professional.

The members of Vox Clamantis all come together from many different backgrounds; some are professional singers as well as instrumentalists, composers, conductors or even clergymen. On top of these other occupations, their shared experience is the devotion of their skills and energy towards the whole ensemble, with Vox Clamantis providing a learning process full of discovery for all involved. A sincere dedication to music-making in the ensemble’s early years has gradually evolved into a confident, eloquent and independent voice that is now also internationally recognised. Jaan-Eik Tulve was born in Tallinn, Estonia. After obtaining his diploma in choral conducting at the Tallinn Conservatory in 1991, he learned to conduct Gregorian chant at Le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSM), where he was awarded a premier prix diploma in 1993. He then worked at the CNSM as assistant to Louis-Marie Vigne, who played a crucial role in his musical development. He has also given many courses in Gregorian chant, in France, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Lithuania, Finland and Estonia; in 1996 he took up a post teaching Gregorian chant at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He is often invited to conduct work sessions in monasteries. In his musical training – Gregorian, in particular – Tulve has learned a great deal from his work alongside Dom Daniel Saulnier of Solesmes Abbey. In 1992 Tulve became conductor of the Paris Gregorian Choir, with which he has appeared in many European countries and also in Lebanon. Many of the recordings made with the choir have received great critical acclaim (including a Diapason d’Or). In 1993 Tulve formed the Lac et Mel ensemble in Paris for the performance of medieval polyphonic works. He also formed the female-voice section of the Paris Gregorian Choir in 1994. Finally, in 1996, he formed the Vox Clamantis ensemble in Tallinn. Tulve has been awarded the Ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic, the Order of the White Star of the Republic of Estonia, and the Ordre de Léopold of the Kingdom of Belgium.

Programme notes This programme, titled O Sacrum Convivium, is a cross-section of French music through several millennia. Its primary impulse is Gregorian chant, which can be considered the main pillar of Europe’s whole musical culture, and which itself largely developed in areas we now know as culturally French. Gregorian chant is a mixture of various different old music cultures; mostly influenced by the rich musical traditions of ancient Rome and former Gallic areas. Around the time of the 7th century, a blending of several musical traditions took place and a new type of ecclesiastical song emerged, later becoming known as Gregorian chant. Countless Western European composers, from the very first ones known by name up to those of contemporary times, have been strongly influenced by Gregorian chant, whether knowingly or not. This programme focuses on three rather distinct French composers of the 20th century – Maurice Duruflé, Francis Poulenc and Olivier Messiaen.

line, whereas Messiaen's music is often extreme in the composition of its multi-voiced arrangements. In between the Gregorian chant and this range of French music from the 20th century, an extensive work by one of the greatest French poets and composers will be performed, Guillaume de Machaut’s Le lai de Nostre Dame. The piece is a poetic tribute to the Virgin Mary and also written in the same familiar monophonic style. Also interspersed within tonight's programme are pieces by Estonian composers. Cyrillus Kreek, one of the most notable Estonian composers of the first half of the 20th century, made numerous choral arrangements of religious music and Estonian folk songs. He set verses from the Biblical Psalms of David to music, and tonight we hear Psalm No 141 and its emotional cry for help set to light but beautiful harmonies. Kas on linnukesel muret [Do the Birds Worry?] on the other hand is a short but soothing take on a traditional Estonian song.

Although the musical language used by these composers was very different, all of them were influenced by Gregorian chant in some way. In his piece Quatre motets sur des thèmes grégoriens, Maurice Duruflé directly uses four songs (two of which are performed tonight), having painted them according to his own musical perceptions when setting them for choir. Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence by Francis Poulenc is based on texts from the Holy Week Liturgy, and although it had been inspired by Gregorian chant, the music itself is not directly related or derived from it.

Two works by the renowned contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt are also performed tonight. The first, Kleine Litanei, was written for the reopening of the medieval Virgil Chapel at Vienna's Stephansplatz. The composer intended it as an invitation to prayer or contemplation, with the piece invoking St Virgil, Bishop of Salzburg, one of the great theologians and thinkers of the Early Middle Ages. The second piece, Morning Star, was written for the 175th birthday of Durham University in 2007, with Pärt choosing to set his music to a prayer that is inscribed in Durham Cathedral above the tomb of St Bede.

Olivier Messiaen admitted that, for him, Gregorian chant was the peak of musical expression. His works do not use the melody of Gregorian chant at all, but it can be said that all of his music's horizontality, phrasing and musical thinking are very close to that of the Gregorian cognition. One can still recognise this despite the fact that Gregorian chant is based on a single, monophonic

In this programme, Vox Clamantis gives expression to its most important musical influences. In its artistic identity and expression, the ensemble relies on Gregorian chant, even in the rare cases when this music itself is not a part of the programme. Whenever they perform, including tonight, this connection can still be clearly found in their musicmaking.

He distinguished himself in several international competitions – First prize in the Gabriel Fauré Competition, Second prize in the Marguerite Long Competition, Most Distinguished Canditate at the Geneva Competition – before embarking on a singular career in which he has appeared both in France and abroad with internationally renowned orchestras such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Dresden Staatskapelle, Orchestre National de Lille and the NHK Orchestra of Tokyo. His recordings of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Debussy (for Lyrinx) have received the highest distinctions from the music press. Among his recordings is the chamber music of Ravel with Trio Pennetier Pasquier Pidoux (Saphir Productions) and two Mozart CDs with the clarinettist Michel Portal and members of the Ysaÿe Quartet. Other recent releases are devoted to Schubert and Liszt with the vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis and Mozart Piano concertos Nos 21 and 24 with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. 2009 saw the appearance of the first volume in Pennetier’s complete recording of the piano works of Fauré; this first volume received a Diapason d'Or and Pennetier is one of the composer’s most eminent interpreters. The first three volumes of these recordings have been unanimously acclaimed by the international press including Gramophone. The fourth and last volume will be released in Spring 2018.

Programme notes Now fulfilled are those events whereof David sang in a truthful poem, Proclaiming to the nations: God has reigned from upon a tree. This phrase from the sixth-century Christian hymn Vexilla Regis, which Franz Liszt selected to open his musical meditation on the Passion of Christ Via Crucis, vividly expresses the paradox of Christianity. A God who reigns by the Cross. The Cross, the most insulting place of death at that time, which represented eternal malediction and a certain form of damnation, has become a place of glorification, the place God chose to set wounded humanity free. Tonight’s programme, built around Liszt’s Via Crucis, alternates compositions by Liszt himself and plainchant from the liturgy of Holy Week. That liturgy, which Liszt knew well, presents the final days of Jesus’ life, his death and repose in the tomb and his Resurrection, in demonstrative, dramatic fashion, with words and melodies that deeply move the heart and draw it irresistibly towards participation. Liszt attempts to encapsulate these experiences in a contemporary musical language, one might even say in a language that was ahead of its time. The programme opens with the Pater noster (Our Father) from the collection Harmonies poétiques et religieuses (1852), thus emphasising the person of God the Father. The Gregorian gradual Christus factus est pro nobis, sung on Palm Sunday and Good Friday after the second reading, quotes the words of St Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians (2:8-9) and develops the theme of Christ’s obedience to his Father’s will unto death, from which emerges the glory and salvation of the world.

A second piece from the collection Harmonies poétiques et religieuses follows, this time the "Ave Maria", a piano transcription of a choral work composed earlier in the composer's career. Vexilla Regis is a processional hymn written by Venantius Fortunatus, Bishop of Poitiers, on the occasion of the transfer of a relic of the True Cross from Tours to the monastery of Sainte-Croix in Poitiers on 19 November 569. It is sung as a vesper hymn in Holy Week and exalts the glorious mystery of the Cross, which bore the Creator and on which death was vanquished. Via Crucis (1879), a meditation on the Way of the Cross scored for soloists, mixed choir and organ (though often played on the piano), is one of Liszt’s boldest and most original compositions. This piece, written at the end of the composer’s life with a view to performance as part of the liturgy, attempts to convey the mystery of the Passion, contemplated through the prism of the entire history of European music, in a new and revolutionary musical language through which one may already glimpse the atonal revolution. The musical inspiration, which ranges from plainchant to Lutheran chorales, is mediated through the most modern chord sequences and harmonies. The piano and the choir are in dialogue, like partners: some Stations of the Cross are assigned to piano alone (numbers 4 – “Jesus meets his Blessed Mother”, 5 – “Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the Cross”, 10 – “Jesus is stripped of his garments” and 13 – “Jesus is taken down from the Cross”), while the others are sung by soloists and/ or choir or else divided between piano and choir. All this is imbued with a very austere spirit, close to our contemporary tastes. The choral parts are either a cappella or very discreetly accompanied on the piano, the solo parts are very unadorned, and an important role is left to silence.

The text, compiled by Carolyne von SaynWittgenstein (Liszt’s final companion before he entered the Franciscan order in 1865) from biblical quotations, Latin hymns and German chorales, also deserves attention. The work opens with the hymn Vexilla Regis, from which the stanzas emphasising the glory of the Cross are selected. There follow the 14 Stations of the Cross, which are characterised by various allusions: quotations from the Gospel (sometimes only a few words to evoke the situation) and texts from the Latin and German traditions linked with the situation and often commented on quite freely. The first station, “Jesus is condemned to death”, sets Pontius Pilate’s phrase Innocens ego sum a sanguine huius‚ “I am innocent of the blood of this just person” (Matthew 27:24), which invites us to reflect on the question of guilt and responsibility. For the second station, “Jesus receives his Cross”, the chosen text is the salutation Ave Crux, taken from the Vexilla Regis, which hails the Cross as our sole hope. For Jesus’ three successive falls (nos 3, 7, and 9), the words Jesus cadit, followed by an allusion to the Stabat Mater, the 13th century Latin hymn meditating on Mary’s grief beneath the Cross, is repeated like a refrain. The sixth station – Saint Veronica wiping Jesus’ face – is evoked through the 17th-century Lutheran chorale by Paul Gerhardt and Johann Crüger on the sufferings of Christ’s head, O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (O head covered in blood and wounds), used by J. S. Bach in his St Matthew Passion. The eighth station – Jesus’ meeting with the women of Jerusalem – quotes the words of Luke’s Gospel: Nolite flere super me sed super vos ipsas flete et super filios vestros (Weep not for me, but for yourselves, and for your children). The 11th station – ‘Jesus is nailed to the Cross’ – is made vivid by the cries of the crowd during Jesus’ trial, Crucifige (Crucify him!). For the 12th station, Christ’s death on the Cross, three of the Seven Last Words are chosen: Eli, eli, lama sabachthani (My God, my God, why hast thou

forsaken me?), an expression of the most extreme distress; In manus tuas commendo spiritum meum (Into thy hands I commend my spirit), expressing confident abandonment to the will of the Father; and Consummatum est (It is finished), Jesus’ last words, signifying the accomplishment of his work of salvation. These three biblical quotations are complemented by the 17th-century German chorale O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (O sadness, O heart’s distress). The 14th station, “Jesus is laid in the tomb”, sees the return of the salutation to the Cross as our sole hope, Ave Crux.
