Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

一個風和日麗的星期天，小男孩和他的朋友們首

男孩因為吃得太多忌廉而臥病在床，一覺醒來，

次參加聖餐。為慶祝這個特別日子，他們被帶

Scene Synopsis Act I

Act II

On a beautiful Sunday, a Boy and his friends receive their first communion. To celebrate the special occasion, they are taken to a confectioner’s shop, where they are served their favourite sweets. The Boy, who particularly loves whipped cream, eats so much that he becomes ill and has to be taken away.

The Boy, still sick from too much whipped cream, finds himself in a dark and sinister hospital room attended by a Doctor and an army of Nurses. They give him medicine and leave the room. In their absence, a fantastic procession, led by Princess Praline, arrives and helps the Boy escape.

With the children gone, the shop comes alive. Marzipan archers, spear-wielding Sugarplums and swashbuckling Gingerbread Men engage in military exercises. Princess Tea Flower appears and is captivated by Prince Coffee, whom she chooses as her mate. Prince Cocoa and Don Zucchero attempt to win her favour, to no avail.

The Doctor is suffering from a headache. He tries to relieve his pain with liquor. Then the liquor bottles come to life. The Nurses return and see that the Boy has disappeared. They find him and lead him back to his bed, but the liquor bottles intervene and intoxicate the Doctor and Nurses, allowing Princess Praline to free the Boy and whisk him away to her kingdom.

The Chef appears with his bowl and whisk, whisking cream, and the shop fades away into a world of the Boy’s dream – a world made entirely of whipped cream.

In the main square of Princess Praline’s domain, creatures of all kinds are celebrating. The Boy meets Nicolo, the Master of Ceremonies, who welcomes him to this fantasy world that will now become his reality.

羅曼斯基所編的芭蕾舞兼具傳統與創新，保留經

羅曼斯基 1 9 6 8 年生於聖彼得堡，青年時期受訓

The Magic of Whipped Cream: American Ballet Theatre’s sweet new twist on Richard Strauss Among the diverse reality-bending programmes at the 2018 HKAF, Whipped Cream is a divinely confectionery ballet that tells the tale of a young boy who gorges on whipped cream in a magical sweets shop where, after hours, marzipan, sugar plums and gingerbread men come to life and dance the night away. However, having eaten so much that he falls into a fantastical sugar-induced delirium, the boy is carted away on a stretcher to a nightmarish hospital dream-world where nurses wield over-sized syringes and the resident doctor is a tippler with an enormous head. The hapless boy dreams of rescue by Princess Praline in the land of bonbons, before this charmingly surreal tale concludes with a festive celebration. Whipped Cream was created in 2017 by Alexei Ratmansky, a critically acclaimed choreographer who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best. Ratmansky is also an avid student of ballet history and has created his own versions of many classical ballets, among them Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Simultaneously inventive but also traditionalist, Ratmansky’s ballets are contained within classical steps, with the choreographer rightly noting their ability to make the dancers look beautiful: “The steps were created to do that. You’d be a fool to throw them away.” At the same time, Ratmansky pushes dancers to move in ways that go beyond usual notions of what dance and movement should be. For instance, his work contains striking offcentre balances, and delicate footwork performed at warp speed. Ratmansky also holds a deep love for story ballets, with their unique ability to delight and move audiences. So by taking two conservatisms – classic steps and classic stories – Ratmansky cleverly utilises them in ways that make 21st century ballet both new and alive. Ratmansky was born in St. Petersburg in 1968 and trained at the storied Bolshoi Ballet in his youth.

While never a truly great dancer, there were signs early on that he was a born choreographer, apparent in his ability to visualise the way in which music could translate into ballet steps. George Balanchine, the 20th century’s leading choreographer, often said that ballet is “music made visible” and Ratmansky certainly possesses that gift for making music something an audience can actually see. Indeed, while watching a Ratmansky ballet, a key thing to look for is the way the dancer’s steps and the music blend together seamlessly, each element enhancing the other. With Whipped Cream’s world premiere in California in March 2017 now followed by the Asian premiere at the 2018 HKAF, this production is Ratmansky’s updated version and tribute to Richard Strauss’s Schlagobers, itself the German for “whipped cream”. Strauss composed the original two-act work with both a libretto and score for the Vienna State Opera in 1924; in presenting it Strauss was seeking to revive the fortunes of Vienna’s famous ballet company, which was struggling mightily in the wake of World War I. The original production was so extravagant with its 287 elaborate costumes that it was sarcastically dubbed the “billionaire’s ballet”, and its lushness had the unintended effect of prejudicing much of the Viennese audience against it given that it premiered at a time when Vienna was reeling from food shortages and hyperinflation. However Strauss was not only keenly aware of those hardships; they were, in fact, the reason he created the ballet. He was terribly affected by its chilly reception and tried to explain himself by saying: “I cannot bear the tragedy of the present time. I want to create joy.” Joy is certainly what Hong Kong audiences will be able to derive from Ratmansky’s Whipped Cream, a ballet he considered reinventing more than 20 years ago when he choreographed a portion of it for a workshop performance. But it was not until 15 years later, when Ratmansky became enchanted by

the work of the brilliant Pop Surrealist artist Mark Ryden that he became determined to create the ballet, with Ryden enlisted to produce the sets and costumes. Ryden’s contributions proved so original and captivating that Ratmansky has come to regard him as his Whipped Cream co-creator; this Ryden surely is, for his unique style informs every aspect and moment of the ballet, including the choreography itself. Ryden’s artistic signature is a surprising blend of pop culture joined with painterly techniques that echo those of the old masters. Thus his work is a vividly coloured feast for the eyes that erases traditional boundaries between high and low art, while his all-encompassing imagination ranges from pretty and cute, to dark and menacing. In Whipped Cream, Act I’s multiple-shades-of-pink and cream-coloured candy shop with its fanciful

white carriage horse give way to Act II’s sparse hospital bed set, containing a surrealist backdrop emblazoned with disembodied eyes and grinning animal heads. Memorable too is Ryden’s rendering of the fanciful realm of Princess Praline, which includes a giant, smiling Snow Yak flanked by a procession of colourful cupcakes. At its best, ballet provides a haven for its audience. Whipped Cream does exactly that as it transports us to a fantastical realm, complete with a cotton candy curtain and a flower-festooned carriage drawn by a white horse with roses adorning its mane. There, as Prince Coffee courts Princess TeaFlower, and we are dazzled by Princess Praline, we see the extraordinary eloquence of the wordless art of ballet. Richard Strauss Music Richard Georg Strauss was born in Munich in 1864, and died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria in 1949, aged 85. He has proved to be the most vital and successful of the successors of Wagner. His operatic methods were based on those of his exemplar, his harmonies, naturally, as he developed, growing more “modem” and individual, and his orchestration (which is masterly) more personal. Unlike Wagner, he wrote much independent instrumental music, usually in the form of highly “programmatic” symphonic poems. the songs are noteworthy. As an opera conductor he enjoyed the highest reputation and held the most important positions. He was born into a musical circle, his father being first horn player in the court orchestra in Munich. He developed early, and at 17, a symphony of his was publicly heard. At first, and until he definitely put aside parental influence on his art, he was of distinctly conservative tendencies; then the leaven of Wagner and Liszt began to work in him and quickly “leavened the whole lump.” It is a possible criticism of him that he sometimes went to excess in the violent expression of passionate emotion, and that at times his musical (and literary) material did not soar above the level of vulgarity. Most musicians looking down his long list of works would probably pick as his most purely enjoyable the symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegel and the opera Der Rosenkavalier, so perhaps suggesting that he was greatest on his somewhat lighter side. He was fortunate in his association with a fine librettist in Hugo von Hofmannsthal. (Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Die Frau ohne Schatten, Die Egytische Helene, and Arabella).

Alexei Ratmansky

Choreography

Alexei Ratmansky was born in St. Petersburg and trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School. His performing career included positions as principal dancer with Ukrainian National Ballet, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet. He has choreographed ballets for the Mariinsky Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, The Australian Ballet, Kiev Ballet and the State Ballet of Georgia. He earned a Golden Mask Award in 1999 and 2007, and in 2005 was awarded a Benois de la Danse prize. He was made Knight of Dannebrog by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 2001. Ratmansky was named artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet in January 2004. For the Bolshoi Ballet, he choreographed full-length productions of The Bright Stream (2003) and The Bolt (2005) and re-staged Le Corsaire (2007) and the Soviet-era Flames of Paris (2008). Under Ratmansky’s direction, the Bolshoi Ballet was named “Best Foreign Company” in 2005 and 2007 by The Critics’ Circle in London, and he received a Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for The Bright Stream in 2006. In 2009, Ratmansky choreographed new dances for the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Aida. Ratmansky joined American Ballet Theatre as Artist in Residence in January 2009. In 2012, Ratmansky choreographed a new version of The Golden Cockerel for the Royal Danish Ballet. The Golden Cockerel received its American Premiere by American Ballet Theatre on June 6, 2016. For American Ballet Theatre, Ratmansky has choreographed On the Dnieper (2009), Seven Sonatas (2009), Waltz Masquerade, The Nutcracker (2010), Dumbarton (2011), Firebird and Symphony #9 (2012), Chamber Symphony, Piano Concerto #1 and The Tempest (2013), The Sleeping Beauty (2015), Serenade on Plato’s Symposium (2016), Whipped Cream (2017) and Songs of Bukovina (2017). Ratmansky was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow for 2013.

Mark Ryden

Set and Costume Design

Blending themes of pop culture with techniques reminiscent of the old masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His work first garnered attention in the 1990s when he ushered in a new genre of painting, "Pop Surrealism", dragging a host of followers in his wake. Ryden has trumped the initial surrealist strategies by choosing subject matter loaded with cultural connotation. Ryden’s vocabulary ranges from cryptic to cute, treading a fine line between nostalgic cliché and disturbing archetype. Seduced by his infinitely detailed and meticulously glazed surfaces, the viewer is confronted with the juxtaposition of the childhood innocence and the mysterious recesses of the soul. In Ryden’s world cherubic girls rub elbows with strange and mysterious figures. Ornately carved frames lend the paintings a baroque exuberance that adds gravity to their enigmatic themes. Ryden received a BFA in 1987 from Arts Center College of Design in Pasadena. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including a retrospective “Wondertoonel” at the Frye Museum of Art in Seattle and Pasadena Museum of California Art, and in the exhibition “The Artist’s Museum” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Whipped Cream is Ryden’s first work for American Ballet Theatre. Ryden's work Dodecahedron - Quintessence 132 is currently displayed at the lobby of Hong Kong Cultural Centre during the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

American Ballet Theatre American Ballet Theatre is recognised as one of the great dance companies in the world. Few ballet companies equal ABT for its combination of size, scope, and outreach. Kevin McKenzie

Artistic Director

Celebrating his 25th Anniversary as Artistic Director, Kevin McKenzie was a leading dancer with both The Joffrey Ballet and the National Ballet of Washington before joining American Ballet Theatre as a Soloist in March 1979. He was appointed a Principal Dancer the same year and danced with the company until 1991. A native of Vermont, McKenzie received his ballet training at the Washington School of Ballet. In 1972, McKenzie was awarded a silver medal at the Sixth International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. As a Principal Dancer with ABT, Mr. McKenzie danced leading roles in all of the major full-length classics and in contemporary works by many leading choreographers of the time. In September 1989, McKenzie was appointed a permanent guest artist with The Washington Ballet and, in 1991, assumed the position of Artistic Associate. He has also acted as Associate Artistic Director and choreographer with Martine van Hamel’s New Amsterdam Ballet. McKenzie was appointed Artistic Director of American Ballet Theatre in October 1992. His previous choreographic credits include Groupo Zambaria (1984) and Liszt Études (1991) both for Martine van Hamel’s New Amsterdam Ballet, and Lucy and the Count (1992) for The Washington Ballet and, for American Ballet Theatre, The Nutcracker (1993), Don Quixote (1995, in collaboration with Susan Jones) a new production of Swan Lake (2000), the conception and direction of a new production of Raymonda (2004), with choreography by Anna-Marie Holmes, and a new production of The Sleeping Beauty with Gelsey Kirkland and Michael Chernov (2007). In 2014, McKenzie, with ABT Ballet Mistress Irina Kolpakova, staged a new production of Raymonda Divertissements. McKenzie has received numerous awards including an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont (1993) and the Dance Magazine Award (1999). McKenzie is a founding board member of Kaatsbaan International Dance Center in Tivoli, New York.

Kara Medoff Barnett

Executive Director

Kara Medoff Barnett was appointed Executive Director of American Ballet Theatre (ABT), America's National Ballet Company® in February 2016 following nearly nine years as a senior executive at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. During her tenure at Lincoln Center, Barnett served as Director of Strategy and Business Development and Senior Director of the Capital Campaign for the transformative redevelopment of Lincoln Center's iconic 16-acre campus. In 2012, Barnett became the founding Managing Director of Lincoln Center International (LCI), established to extend Lincoln Center's brand, facilitate artistic exchange and advise government leaders, philanthropists, and developers on the planning and management of cultural infrastructure projects around the globe. Under Barnett's leadership, LCI launched the Lincoln Center Global Exchange, an annual conference for international leaders and change agents to advance the role of art and culture in addressing critical challenges facing our collective future. Barnett has produced plays on and off Broadway, and she received a Tony Award® for the 2003 Broadway revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the American Theatre Wing, a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a 2015 Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute. In 2014, she was named "40 under 40" in Crain's New York Business. Barnett attended Duke University on a Trinity Scholarship, graduating summa cum laude, and received her MBA from Harvard Business School.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is recognised as Asia’s foremost classical orchestra. Presenting more than 150 concerts over a 44-week season, the HK Phil attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually and also maintains a comprehensive education and community outreach programme. Under Music Director Jaap van Zweden, the HK Phil has accomplished various ambitious initiatives including the four-year project to perform and record the complete Ring of the Nibelung (Richard Wagner). The orchestra has toured extensively – to Europe, throughout Mainland China on numerous occasions, and to Seoul, Osaka, Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney in 2017 as part of the HKSAR’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
