MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.

For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.

This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.

As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.

Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I know you will treasure every performance, every moment, of this year’s Hong Kong Arts Festival.

This revelation for Tamanoir's co-founders—creative director Samuel Lepoil and producer Rémi Large—came over the previous 12 months while the duo was presenting The Castaways, a self performance about disappearance and memory for 20-40 participants who are guided by a soundscape, internal voices and choreographic cues transmitted via an audio headset to interact with the spaces and people surrounding them.

Before then, Tamanoir had incorporated innovations such as virtual and augmented reality, and projection mapping into its cutting edge productions that lay at the intersection of immersive theatre, dance and the latest technology. For example, Call Me Calamity (2020) and City of Foxes (2021) both utilised motion capture and VR to immerse participants into their interactive, alternative worlds.

"But when we tested a prototype

of The Castaways [using audio only], we found that some people at the end were crying, some were left in complete silence," Large says. "We never saw that before with our VR experiences and we realised that sound alone is way more immersive.

"The explanation is simple. With VR, you're limited by what you can see. But with audio

headsets, the only limit is your own imagination. This way you can beat the immersion of any VR project, even the biggest ones. But you can't beat your own imagination."

Lepoil adds that Tamanoir had noticed the constraints and limits of VR in a theatre setting, particularly in the way that participants could connect with each other. "So the idea was to remove this technology but find a way to keep the same quality of immersion and interactivity. That's why we started to use sound—as Remi said, the imagination is the best graphical rendering engine available."

Tamanoir was founded in 2017 by Lepoil, who has a background in interactive design and theatre, and Large, who had a previous career as a dancer followed by work in cinema. FestMag caught up with the friendly Lepoil and Large when

they were in Hong Kong last September preparing for their 2023 Jockey Club InnoArts Series performances titled First Steps that are a spiritual successor to The Castaways, but with some notable differences. In the Hong Kong shows, created with the assistance of local artists including dramaturgist Enoch Cheng, audience members can register to be a participant when they purchase a ticket. They will be guided on stage by audio cues over headsets and will be joined by professional dancers while they perform in front of other audience members.

"The concept of the Hong Kong shows is about 'first steps'," Lepoil says. "We spent three years in a kind of secure environment putting up defences not only against COVID-19, but also against each other. We have lost touch with what it's like to

take risks and to be open to each other. And so we want to offer the audience, the members of the public, an opportunity to take their first steps on stage as a way to feel once again what it's like to take risks."

Large adds: "We want everyone to feel safe on stage. We want everyone to feel welcome. And so we start with really easy and simple instructions. And after that, when everyone feels more confident, we introduce more of the instructions that are more open to interpretation and people can express themselves more at the end of the experience. But it's gradually evolving during the show."

Conversation with Enoch Cheng and Sudhee Liao

Stepping into the unknown

Together with Tamanoir Immersive Studio, Hong Kong artists Enoch Cheng and Sudhee Liao have created First Steps, a seminal performance that combines dance with an interactive immersive experience. Presented by Cheng as Dramaturge, Adapter and Associate Director (Cantonese version) and Sudhee Liao as Associate Choreographer, First Steps invites 24 participating audience members to join five professional dancers on stage and share something quite remarkable. The participants are asked to put on headphones and unfurl into a series of movements as they follow audio instructions, while the 200 spectating audience members remain in their seats and watch the performance unfold.

In terms of authenticity

The inventiveness of the show might make it a literal “first step” for both the participants and the local audience alike. The involvement of nonprofessional dancers, possible technical difficulties, as well as differences in culture, language and expectations, are among the many challenges this transregional collaboration has faced. “It’s quite an effort,” admits Cheng.

Guaranteed, First Steps is not like any other performance by non-professional dancers. “Most of the regular people we see in performances today are more or less trained before going on stage. They know what they are doing and are proactive. They all have the right to initiate even if

invited.” In contrast, the people on stage in First Steps could be anyone who bought a ticket to the show. They have no idea what they will be dealing with or what they will have to do. “It’s like getting a ticket to a theme park, but not knowing if it has the thrills you’re looking for.” Whether the performance turns out to be a success or not, all participants will emote and move in real time. “Even if all our presumptions fail, we will have elicited real reactions.”

Liao, Cheng’s long-time collaborator, took an immediate interest in the project, believing that it felt special from the start.

“First Steps is not a regular dance performance, but involves more self-initiative body movements. It’s more sensual and immersive

than others, as audience members are both participants and spectators.” The challenges and inventiveness of the project were both interesting to Liao, a contemporary dance graduate from The Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts who is originally from Singapore but has been based in Hong Kong for more than 10 years. In First Steps, Liao is tasked with arranging movements for both the dancers and the participating audience, while keeping in mind the entirety of the miseen-scène, as well as music and lighting arrangements. “For one, I wouldn’t call it ‘dancing’,” Liao says. “It’s still unclear what constitutes ‘dance’. Is pacing around considered dancing? Or does it take a few more spins

©Luster Angle Limited
24

before it becomes a dance’?” She sees no need for the audience to be concerned if they don’t have any experience with the medium, since the choreography is designed for everyone of all ages and genders.

As a multimedia artist, Cheng’s practice involves moving images, installation, dance, theatre and curation, performance, among others. He laid the groundwork for First Steps by diving into an avalanche of research material and textual analysis, extracting from there the essence and motives embedded in the concept and weaving together a framework through which every party involved could communicate.

To ensure that the participants immediately understand the instructions and respond appropriately during the performances, Cheng is also responsible for translating and polishing the English or Chinese content that originates from French. Cheng may have completed his Master’s degree in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London, but he has still encountered challenges in trying to effectively deliver the instructions. Clarity, he says, might not always mean accuracy. “Take ‘raising hands’ as an example. If the raised hands are not levelled, will it still look presentable? Too much coordination might not work either. How participants will be able to act out the instructions naturally is something we also gave a

lot of thought to.” There are countless scenarios to consider, such as whether participants fail to grasp the situation fast enough, or even go so far as to refuse to act according to the instructions. “We do face a lot of uncertainties,” said Cheng. “Every performance will be one of a kind.”

But Liao emphasises that these “uncertainties” are what make the performance beautiful. To her, the event will also be intriguing from the spectators’ point of view, since they will be able to identify varying personalities among the participants. “To witness them taking a first step is to see them grow,” said Cheng. He sees First Steps as a pure theatre experience, one that allows participants to become more aware of their command over their own bodies through various movements. “Even if they fail, the experience is theirs and theirs only.”

Tamanoir Immersive Studio is a French creative company based in Paris using immersive technology to challenge the worldwide live art scene. It was founded in 2017 by Remi Large and Samuel Lepoil, with the aim of connecting people to their bodies and to each other. After success at the Venice Biennale, Cannes XR and the Paris New Image Festival, Tamanoir is currently focusing on creating large scale immersive shows for prestigious institutions such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Paris Opera.

“Connect” and “reconnect” are two words that define every Tamanoir experience. It uses technology, often in invisible ways, to offer a time and a space for participants to engage in deep emotional and sensorial exploration. For that purpose, it has created a workflow that helps provide experiences with presence, intimacy and togetherness as their main themes.

Experiences at Tamanoir are cowritten with the public. Every creation is tested from the outset to help Tamanoir understand how the public interacts with it and enable the company to push it even further. In this way, Tamanoir Immersive Studio hopes to offer experiences that are not created by one individual mind, but by our collective consciousness.

In the future, Tamanoir hopes to create more participative and

transformative experiences to lay the foundation for permanent places and public events dedicated to self transformation through movement and art.

Böme aka Samuel Lepoil

Böme, aka Samuel Lepoil, is an interactive artist based in Paris. He is dedicated to exploring the connections between gestures and emotions through experiences that push the limits of interactivity.

After studying both interactive design at Gobelins and The Sorbonne, and theatre at Lecoq, Böme started creating immersive theatre shows in VR, including Call Me Calamity (which won the VR award at Cannes). Progressively removing technology from his work, Böme focuses on interactions between bodies and mind, and not just with buttons and screens. To do that, he creates performances, known as “auto-performances”, in which all participants move and talk while following prompts.

An auto-performance is made up of unprepared participants and choreographed with prompts that can be delivered over audio, smartphone, paper or any other device. It foreshadows a new era of storytelling, in which the participant is not there to listen or watch, but is the main creator of the piece. The artist only provides the framework for them to do so.

First Steps is part of a collection of creations using this format of auto- performances as their common ground.

Jean Le Bellego is a groundbreaking French composer who

sees sound as a way to create new spaces, real and imaginary.

A pianist and musician since his youth, he decided to continue his studies in audio electronics with a Master's degree in Sound Design. This path led him to study sound waves, both their technical nature and their capacity to move us.

It was through these studies that he developed a deep interest in the composition of interactive music and immersive sounds. He is looking to change the way music and bodies talk to each other, creating sound that follows movements, and music that listens and reacts to the participants.

His vision led him to create a musical identity based on rich sonic constructions of textures and materials. As a trailblazer in immersive sound, he is trying to push the limits in this new area and encourage participants to be at the centre of the musical composition.

He sees each intervention as an opportunity to develop a strong and coherent universe, not hesitating to vary and explore different materials and techniques in order to best suit the creative context.

A former dancer and documentary producer, Rémi Large is the co-founder of Tamanoir Immersive Studio, which creates experiences combining the performing arts and new technologies for cultural institutions.

After a career as a dancer and a producer, Large finally turned to the cinema by earning a degree at the University of ParisSorbonne. He then worked for a year and a half on documentaries at 13 Productions, both in production and directing, and became passionate about the genre.

After returning to university he met Samuel Lepoil. Together, they produced their first virtual reality project, which was bought by France Télévisions: Saving Tomas.

But Large has never forgotten his passion for dance and the performing arts. He and Lepoil decide to start Tamanoir, a studio dedicated to creating immersive experiences for the performing arts. He co-directed the first 360° teaser for the Paris National Opera, he won the XR Market Prize at the New Images Festival for A City of Foxes, which

combines theatre and virtual reality, and he used motion capture to bring into 3D the contemporary dancer Alexandre Fandard during a virtual reality experience with the CentQuatre. His desire remains the same: to expand the horizons of the performing arts using immersive technologies.
