HKAF’s Golden Jubilee and the 60th Anniversary of City Hall. Every year, more than 1700 local and international artists take part in the HKAF. With its wide array of traditional performances and innovative contemporary works, the HKAF plays a crucial role in raising Hong Kong’s international reputation in the arts world while highlighting the rich local culture. At the same time, it underpins the strategy to support Hong Kong’s development into an East-meetsWest centre for international cultural exchange under the National 14th FiveYear Plan. I am encouraged to see that despite the tremendous difficulties during the pandemic, the HKAF remains committed to promoting arts education in schools and other outreach activities. In particular, the PLUS programmes of the Festival bring together artists and members of the public through a range of activities such as behind-the-scenes videos, masterclasses, artist dialogues and preand post-performance talks. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the HKAF team who always strives to ensure the Festival’s ongoing success over the past 50 years. I congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) on celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year. Striving to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Hong Kong, the HKAF is an annual highlight for arts enthusiasts from home and abroad. Due to the closure of cultural and arts venues during the fifth wave of the pandemic earlier this year, certain in-venue programmes had to be cancelled. This notwithstanding, the HKAF was quick in moving some programmes online while presenting some others (including those open for the public free of charge) as originally planned. Six of these programmes were rescheduled in the latter half of 2022 as a “line-up” to continue the HKAF under the theme “Connected”. It demonstrates the flexibility and creativity of the Hong Kong arts sector in infusing culture in the daily lives of Thispeople.year’s HKAF features a wide array of in-venue programmes, including A Tribute to Cantonese Opera Legend Sun Ma Sze Tsang and the stunning dance performance Colossus, which will be presented from July to November. In addition, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and artists from City Contemporary Dance Company will jointly present an evening event featuring a spectacular music and dance performance entitled Reflections of Refractions, to mark the

The Hong Kong Arts Festival marks a significant milestone this year. Thank you for joining us in celebrating its 50th edition. Though the pandemic continues to present challenges and has prompted us to be extranimble in our response this year, the Festival’s determination to bring you some of the best in performing arts from across the world remains Theunabated.prevailing conditions made travel difficult and the HKAF once again adapted. Though the fifth wave of the pandemic forced venues to close, the Festival still managed to present an excellent world-class lineup online and will present some of the programmes it couldn’t show, on a deferred schedule later this year. The Hong Kong Arts Festival remains “Connected”—to the world and to its audiences—bringing a range of programmes, including theatre, dance, opera and music. We are honoured that a number of signature Festival programmes have been selected for inclusion in the 25th Anniversary events. In this and in many other ways, the Festival has been a part of the Hong Kong story over the past 50 years. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Gangsters of Hong Kong, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached around 800,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

I have been struck by the dancers' physical intelligence, their capacity to work as a unified group and also by their fascinating individuality.

It has been a wonderful experience to re-create Colossus with a cast of brilliant young dancers from Hong Kong. Our journey together started in January with a huge group of 58 dancers learning the choreography in record time thanks to their incredible work ethic and enthusiasm, with the help of fantastic rehearsal directors in Hong Kong and in TheMelbourne.dancers came to understand the show very quickly and embodied the choreographic style in all its wildness and precision. After this exciting start, we had to cease rehearsals due to COVID-19-related lockdowns. But now we’re back, thanks to the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. I’m immensely grateful to the original dancers for keeping the show in their bodies and brains, and to the new dancers who joined the project with great enthusiasm.

Although we have been working online, we have gotten to know them as individuals and can see how hard they are working.

The Hong Kong version of Colossus is an extraordinary feat of international collaboration. We are connected from Melbourne via the wonders of technology and are able to bring our audience an epic dance during a global pandemic, despite not being able to travel to Hong Kong.

Colossus shows the strength in numbers and the power of the masses. It explores solidarity, mob behaviour, protest, intimacy, playfulness and control.

Colossus questions whether our societies, crowds and social networks are more than simply collections of individuals. It explores both the beauty and ugliness of the collective experience, but is ultimately full of optimism. I hope you enjoy the work of these remarkable young dancers and marvel at what they have achieved during the equivalent of just three weeks of rehearsals.

Colossus comes alive in front of an audience - it was created to be shared, and we can’t wait for you to experience it.

An Extraordinary Feat of International Collaboration

Stephanie Lake’s Colossus is a monumental yet uniquely intimate work featuring a large cast of dancers. Under normal circumstances, Lake and her team would have personally come to Hong Kong to rehearse with the dancers from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and stage the performance before a live Butaudience.during these tough times, all we can do is play it by ear and face every challenge headon. Therefore we are particularly thankful to Stephanie for her painstaking guidance, as well as to the Dean of the HKAPA’s Dance School, Professor Anna C.Y. Chan, and her dancers for accomplishing such an extraordinary feat. They made an incredible effort to resume rehearsals, which were previously interrupted by Hong Kong’s fifth wave of COVID-19 infections in February.

More than two years into the pandemic, the ecology and market cycles of the performing arts have undergone irrevocable changes, while cultural exchanges between countries have been severely hampered. Despite five waves of infections, the Festival has survived through thick and thin, and international artistic collaborations during the pandemic have only been made possible due to tremendous efforts and creative thinking.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival has attempted to keep the international flow of arts and cultural exchanges alive by finally bringing Colossus to fruition, so that the efforts of countless people – both on and off stage – will not have been wasted. And we hope you enjoy this masterpiece as much as we do.

Dance, and Contemporary Dance specialisations to fully develop their individual artistic voices and identify individual strengths, all while presenting the piece with a strong collective voice. In spite of all the challenges due to COVID-19, our collaborative process has helped create highquality work, with the diverse perspectives and creative contributions of each student proving valuable. The experience has had a positive impact on their resilience, physical technique, self-discipline and critical thinking skills. “The group unifies with things happening through strength in numbers,” says Lake. “But then an individual takes an action that steers the group in a new direction and the mass either turns on them or joins in. Sometimes the group is like a beautiful flock of birds or leaves on a tree, but at other times an individual figure stands out because it was important to me that the humans within Colossus become more than just abstract forms and that the audience connects with them.”

Creating mass movement that is both organic and spectacular is a hallmark of Stephanie Lake’s large-scale public shows, such as her latest, Multiply, performed by 400 dancers in Melbourne’s Prahran Square in November 2020. The Australian choreographer had already taken her monumental scale inside the auditorium with Colossus, an extravaganza for at least 40 dancers, which premiered in Melbourne in September 2018 and was performed at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris last June. Lake’s inspiration was two-fold. “It’s about the push and pull of society and the beauty and ugliness of crowd behaviour,” she explains. “It’s also looking at the grand cycles of nature, the patterns in the natural world; and seeing humans as part of that.”

For Chan, preparation and performance are an essential part of the educational process. “Performance practice is the core of our whole programme,” she says. “Performing Colossus will provide crucial personal development for our students and assimilating the environment of a professional company will help to push them to the next level and they will be ready for a professional career when they leave the Academy.”

“The challenges of reviving Colossus during the past two years have been mind-boggling, but it is so worth it because it couldn’t have happened otherwise since we can’t travel out of Australia,” Lake says. “This large-scale work is touring to major stages around the world without anyone getting on a plane. It just feels like a kind of pandemic miracle.”

Lake acknowledges that the willingness and optimism of the young dancers are vital to that success. “They’re up for it and just get on board. They’re also really good with technology; so, if things go wrong, they can fix it.”

Lake relishes this new challenge: “It’s a beautiful thing because Colossus takes on so much personality from individual dancers. I don’t want it to be a cookie-cutter replication every time. I love the unpredictability of different interactions with the dancers because it’s not controllable and the dancers in Hong Kong bring a different interpretation to those of previous casts.”

Due to pandemic restrictions, Colossus has been entirely rehearsed remotely. “It’s an extraordinary feat of international collaboration and technology,” says Lake. “We’re doing all the rehearsals on Zoom, which creates a layer of other issues to contend with. It’s one thing to deal with problems of a lag in timing when you are setting a small piece but it presents an altogether different scale of problems when trying to assimilate 40 or more dancers over Zoom.”

Stephanie Lake is a multiaward-winning choreographer and the artistic director of Stephanie Lake Company, based in Melbourne. Her major works include Manifesto, Colossus, Skeleton Tree, Pile of Bones, AORTA, Replica, A Small Prometheus, Double Blind, Mix Tape and DUAL. Her works have toured across Australia and internationally to France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Belgium, Luxembourg and New Zealand. Lake has created many works for other companies including Sydney Dance Company, Chunky Move, Queensland Ballet, Dancenorth, New Zealand Dance Company, Tasdance, Frontier Danceland (Singapore), Expressions Dance Company and Beijing Dance/LDTX. Lake was a recipient of the prestigious Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship, an Australia Council Fellowship and a Dame Peggy van Praagh Choreographic Fellowship. She has been awarded Helpmann, Australian Dance and Green Room Awards for Best Choreography. Lake danced for Lucy Guerin, Chunky Move and BalletLab for nearly 20 years, touring widely with each. His laser works, which synchronise sound and visual electricity in hyper-amplified 3D spaces, have been performed in over 60 cities worldwide. Since 2008 he has composed music for over 25 contemporary dance works. His art/ science sound work Interior Design: Music for the Bionic Ear was selected by the Paris Rostrum of Composers in 2012. Fox holds a PhD in Composition. She is currently Lecturer in Contemporary Dance and MFA advisor at the HKAPA. Li graduated with distinction from the HKAPA in 2002 majoring in Modern Dance, after which she continued her studies at the Academy and was awarded an MFA in Dance in 2008 with full scholarship. After graduation, she taught the Modern Dance Diploma Programme at the Guangdong Dance School. In 2004, she joined the Odyssey Dance Theatre in Singapore as an Artist in Li’sResidence.outstanding performances have received widespread recognition. She is regularly invited to perform around the world, visiting countries including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, South Korea and Singapore. She received the Hong Kong Dance Award from the Hong Kong Dance Alliance in 2001 and 2012 for her exceptional performance in Interiors by Csaba Buday and for her choreography and performance in a duet, The Moment I Saw It, respectively. Her recent choreographic works include Moment, The Moment I Saw It, Lost Squares, Afterimage, Human Factor, Sense of Distance, Beyond Restraint, Thoughts of Mind, Dreamer, Move to Heaven and the full-length work Creature of the Night. 31

Yan Xiaoqiang is a celebrated dancer, choreographer, and rehearsal director with extensive teaching experience in dance. He has been a Lecturer in Chinese Dance at the HKAPA since August 2013 and an MFA advisor since 2018. As a founding dancer of the Beijing Dance Theater from 2008 to 2013, Yan danced all leading roles and collaborated with renowned choreographers from around the world. The repertoire of various styles ranged from contemporary dance, ballet, Chinese dance, tai chi, Kunqu, hip-hop and drama theatre. With the company, he has performed at numerous top festivals and theatres worldwide, including Sadler’s Wells (London), the Holland Dance Festival (The Hague) and the Hong Kong Arts Festival (2011, 2012).

The Melbourne-based Stephanie Lake Company was established in 2014 to create and tour contemporary dance works. Known for its gutsy, original choreographic style and striking visual aesthetic, Stephanie Lake Company strives to create performances that are affecting and Workingrelevant.incollaboration with Australia’s leading dancers, designers and composers, the company has been presented in major festivals and venues around Australia and has toured internationally to France, Germany, Hong Kong, Denmark, Singapore and the UK.

Artistic Director Stephanie Lake won the Australian Dance Award in 2018 (Pile of Bones) and 2014 (AORTA) for Outstanding Choreography, the Helpmann Award for Outstanding Choreography in 2014 (A Small Prometheus) and the Green Room Award for Best Choreography (Mix Tape) in 2011. She is currently the recipient of the Australia Council Fellowship for Dance. She is also a past recipient of the Australia Council Fellowship for Dance, the Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship and the Peggy Van van Praagh Choreographic Fellowship.
