衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. I am grateful, too, to the many sponsors and donors who, each year, help make the Festival a resounding success. Not only do we spotlight exhilarating programmes at stages old and new across Hong Kong, but also reflect on the stage as a process of transformation. Classic repertoire is reinvented through brave homages and boldly experimental retellings, and the original designs, technologies and storytelling modes of new works crash through the boundaries of the traditional stage. HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

香港藝術節承蒙香港賽馬會慈善信託基金贊助,策劃了賽馬會本地菁英創作系列音樂劇場《陪着你走》外展活動。 活動包括 : 學校巡迴示範演出及巡迴教育展覽、駐校工作坊及觀賞香港藝術節本地委約及製作節目─《陪着你 走》。外展專場分別於 3 月 1 日晚上 8 時和 3 月 5 日下午 3 時舉行。3 月 5 日下午 3 時外展專場及 3 月 9 日下午 8 時的公開場次為通達專場。 The Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series Always by Your Side Educational Programme is an outreach project solely sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Activities include touring music theatre demonstrations and educational displays, interactive music workshops and Always by Your Side special performances on 1 and 5 March, curated for participants of the programme. Accessible performances on 5 March (3pm) and 9 March (8pm) are available with Cantonese audio description provided by Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong.

Director’s Note 音樂劇場《陪着你走》利用音樂元素譜出人與

The music theatre production Always by Your Side makes use of melodies and rhythms to build a communicative bridge between people. The various instruments played onstage interweave with conversation, emotion and body language to make that connection. In accordance with the conventions of music theatre, plot tension and character personalities must be presented through musical scenes. Yet the spontanaeity of live performance has brought many variations to our rehearsals, thus presenting a number of challenges for a director. Beyond the music, Always by Your Side addresses special educational needs communities living with autism, dyslexia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Parents facing the situations

found within this production can be found all around us, and we have unexpectedly tapped into a public nerve. To care for and be attentive to children with special needs, we need to put ourselves in their shoes. Only then might we understand why some might be sensitive to certain sounds, be picky eaters, or behave in certain ways. We cannot wait for them to overcome society’s obstacles to open up a conversation and enter into their worlds. If we make that first step towards actively understanding them, only then will they be willing to open their hearts. I hope the audience can learn more about these communities and take action based on what they have learnt today to open up doors to communication and create an inclusive society. Tang Wai-kit

Playwrights' Notes 創作這部劇本,是一個讓自己變得謙卑的過 程。 三年前,我讀到盧盧(盧冠廷先生)於報章上 的一篇訪問,談及他在青年時代克服讀寫障礙 的困難,後來從作曲及演奏中找到另一種表達 自己的渠道,從而感受到滿足感,這令我深深 被撼動。他潛藏的音樂才華神奇地甦醒過來, 成功恢復了自信,在校園裏與同學打成一片。 後來我做了些關於有特殊教育需要的學生的訪 問,每每看到家長、老師、社工、學生們不辭 勞苦地克服各種困難,我的心弦也被猛然牽 動。他們都用自己的方法,在混亂中保持冷靜 和理智,在絕望中探討出清晰的思路,在憂愁 中尋找幽默和樂趣。 無論有特殊教育需要的學生有甚麼志向─作曲 家、舞台演員或動畫師,困擾他們的執念和折 磨,其實也是構成藝術視野不可或缺的部分。 「天賦異稟者與情緒失衡者,如同一個人的優 點與缺點 ,時常都會無法被辨別出來。」 — 埃德蒙.威爾遜

The process of creating this play has been a most humbling journey for me. It started three years ago when I was deeply touched by a newspaper interview with Lo Lo (Mr Lowell Lo) on his anxiety in combatting dyslexia difficulties as a teenager and his joy in discovering an alternative way to express himself by composing and performing music. This miraculous unlocking of his latent musical talent eventually restored his self-esteem and peer acceptance in school. Further research on the local Special Educational Needs (SEN) students frequently tugged at my heartstrings while witnessing how persevering parents, teachers, social workers and students struggled in their ways to bring sanity to chaos, clarity to despair and humour to pathos.

Music Director’s Note 阿恩和阿敏的故事,其實是你我身邊

a n y b o d y 的故事,超普遍。人就是凹凸巖 巉,他就是他,跟你一樣、不一樣也只是 個 fact,可以扣着人的,就是個「陪」字。 我陪你,你陪我,大家互相陪大家,即是溝 通。「音樂」,不是學會一件樂器,不是深 奧的藝術,而是最直接的溝通工具,它有文 字做不到的感染力。 作為音樂人,我聽到最多的就是:「嗱 嗱。⋯⋯我唔識音樂㗎⋯⋯不過又幾好聽 ⋯⋯」。你未必,更不需要明白樂理,音樂 就像味覺、嗅覺、觸覺,身體是可以用感受 來接收訊息的。有時你根本不需要打開自 己,因為一個波、一隻杯、一下隆然巨響、 電梯機械聲的重複、海灘的浪、打風落雨、 南丫島晚上的寧靜,都是音樂。身邊就是這 些高低抑揚,一直陪着你走,有時合,有時 撞。我作為音樂總監的功能,就是像變魔 術,把它們 reconstruct,可能更像廚師,給 你重新領略。偶然你走了進去,有一秒和外 界disconnect,我就成功了。 希望《陪着你走》能帶你進入阿恩和阿敏的 世界,一陣。 李端嫻

The story of Yan and Man is a story that could belong to any of us—a universal story. People are as varied and uneven as the crags in a stone: that there are likenesses and dissimilarities between us is simply a fact. What connects us is our existing together. I accompany you, just as you accompany me. When we all accompany each other, communication can occur. Music is not the mastery of an instrument, nor is it an esoteric skill. It is the most direct means of communication. It has an affective power beyond words. As a musician, I often hear people say, “Now I know nothing about music, but this sounds pretty good…” You might not, nor do you have to, be fluent in music theory; to feel music is akin to receiving information through taste, smell and touch. Sometimes you don’t even have to open yourself up, because it’s all music: a ball bouncing, a mug, a sudden loud noise, the mechanical purring of a lift, waves at the beach, a rainstorm, the quiet of Lamma Island. The sounds around you rise and fall, always by your side. At times they work in unison; at times they clash. As musical director, my job is to reconstruct these sounds as if I’m playing a magic trick, or, perhaps more like a chef, my presentation leads you to a new interpretation of sounds. If by chance you stumble into that world and lose yourself from the outside for even a second, I’ve made it work. I hope Always by You Side will take you into the world of Yan and Man, if only for a while. Veronica Lee

Always by your side, always a blessing 傳說上帝為了阻止人類建造巴別塔,變換共 通的語言,令人類失去溝通的橋樑,各散東 西。其實即使語言相通,溝通又談何容易? 心底話難以宣之於口,明明有言,卻無語; 想被理解,卻往往不被理解。音樂劇場《陪 着你走》呈現的就是這種建立溝通的過程— 傷痕纍纍,陣痛連連,但仍然值得。老生常 談,但又擊中人心。 劇中一對男女學生—王雨恩和吳聰敏,一 個嘈喧巴閉,說話不經大腦;一個惜字如 金,行徑撲朔迷離。兩人同樣都被視為學校 裏的異類,其實內心一直有個柔軟的世界, 無人知曉。 飾演王雨恩的游學修就看出角色的可愛之 處:「他很直接,不論是罵人或對別人的關 心,從不修飾,加上有過度活躍症,身邊人 會覺得他很煩。但同時很可愛,有需要時會 陪伴你,覺得你做錯了,又會直接罵你。去 到後期,不捨得與朋友分開,更流露出柔情 和軟弱一面。」 至於吳聰敏,觀眾如果細心留意,會發現她 雖然很少表達感受,但其中一直向外界發放 一些「信號」,只是在等待別人調校至適當 的頻率:「吳聰敏很想擁有感情,但不懂去 感受。其實她內心一直有很多話想說,但溝 通方式跟一般人不同,有話想說便會用身體 動作,以身體語言表達感受。」飾演吳聰敏 的章尾而說。 第五場是兩人關係的轉捩點,兩個性情直率 真誠的人,被迫共處一室,開始建立溝通基 礎。兩個在日常生活中處處被標籤的人,並 不會加諸標籤在對方身上,「阿敏和阿恩都

It’s said that to stop humans from building the Tower of Babel, God confounded humanity’s once common tongue; having lost their means of universal communication, humanity thus scattered to settle across the earth. But even with a common language, was communication really ever so simple? It can be difficult to speak what the heart knows: you might have something to say without ever finding the words; you might yearn for connection, yet never be understood. The music theatre production Always by Your Side presents this arduous process of establishing communication—a painful yet worthwhile endeavour— in a seemingly commonplace tale that gets to the heart of human connection. In the story, Wong Yu-yan (“Yan”) and Ng Chung-man (“Man”) are two students: the former is unruly and speaks without thinking; the latter hoards her words like gold and acts in ways that tend to confound. Both are treated as outcasts at school, but in their minds exist gentle worlds that few others understand.

jamie zhang about her character. “In fact, she has a lot to say in her heart, but her way of communicating is different from most people. If she wants to say something, she does so through body language.” Scene Five is the turning point for these characters’ relationships. When two people with such honest, straightforward dispositions are forced into the same room, the foundation for communication is suddenly laid. These two young people, so often labelled by others in society, would never label each other. “[In the story], we don’t see any problems with each other, so we’re able to change and progress together. In this scene, Man knows that Yan is scared of the dark; Yan knows that Man hates being touched. Learning what each other likes and dislikes is the first step towards communication,” continues zhang.

Yau Hawk-sau, who plays the role of Wong Yu-yan, recognises the lovable side of his character: “He is very straight-forward, no matter if he is yelling at or caring for someone. There is no pretense with him. Add to this mix his ADHD, and the people in his life might find him very annoying. But at the same time, he’s very sweet. He’ll be by your side when you need him, and will directly tell you off if you’ve done something wrong. Towards the end, he also shows a gentle and vulnerable side when he finds it hard to say goodbye to his friends.” As for Ng Chung-man, if the audience looks closer, they might realise that her lack of expression does not, in fact, equal a shortage of emotion. All along, Ng has been sending her own signals out into the world and has simply been waiting for someone to tune into the right frequency. “Ng Chung-man wants to have emotions, but doesn’t know how to feel,” relates actress

無論是彈結他、打鼓、玩敲擊樂,甚至是 唱 K 唱流行曲,音樂一直在推進劇情發展。 音樂的影響力,亦透過另一個關鍵角色出 現— 周s i r,見證了王雨恩和吳聰敏的成 長。周國賢笑說,其實劇中的周sir不是真的 教音樂:「他有抱負又帶點熱血,認為校長 的一套教學方法過時,決定以音樂帶領他們 衝破關口,用聲音引導他們接觸世界,走出 自己的殼。他相信玩音樂不需要比拼技術, 更重要是學習跟隨別人的節奏。」 比起音樂老師,周sir更像一個社工,以音樂 及自身和媽媽相處的經驗,鼓勵學生與家人 溝通。《陪着你走》亦有着墨於家長和子 女間的關係,如何解開心結,令彼此達至 同步。「每個人都想說,但沒有人願意去聆 聽,其實要溝通,一定要聆聽對方。有一場 戲令我很感動,周sir教他們用身體敲擊樂跟 媽媽溝通,令大家願意踏出第一步。其實即 使不是有特殊學習需要的學生,很多人的家 庭都有各種問題,開始溝通是很重要的,往 後便順其自然吧。」周國賢說。 劇終,吳聰敏和敏媽沒有在一夜之間成為好 朋友,我們看到的是她們溝通的起點。開展 溝通已經難,維持也不見得容易,但只要記 得,能夠陪着別人走一段路,總是幸運的, 便有了繼續下去的力量。 廖健邦

Does their means of relating perhaps suggest that language is not the most effective means of communication? There are times when bodily movements, looks, expressions, and sounds may be better able to express truth. In this production, both characters also try their hand at composing music and lyrics. With the song The Scarecrow and the Tin Man, their two opposing sets of lyrics reveal each other’s strengths and weaknesses; Yan and Man transmit their mutual understanding through music. Music also plays an important role in fostering the plot development, whether through playing the guitar, drumming, singing karaoke or belting out pop tunes. The power of music is particularly seen through another main character, Mr Chow, who witnesses the growth of Wong Yu-yan and Ng Chung-man. Endy Chow jokes that his character Mr Chow doesn’t really teach music: “He has high ambitions and a bit of passion. He thinks the school principal’s teaching methods are outdated and decides to use music to help the two students break through boundaries and lead them out of their shells and into the world. He believes that playing music is not about competitive skills; it’s more important to learn how to keep up with the rhythm of others.” At times, Chow’s character seems more like a social worker than a music teacher, using both his music and past experiences with his own mother to encourage the two students to communicate with their families. As such, Always by Your Side delves into the parent–child relationship, exploring how to untangle relationship knots and get everyone on the same page. “Everyone wants to say something, but no one is willing to listen. If we really want to communicate, we must listen to one another,” explains Chow. “There is a scene in the play that I found very touching: Mr Chow teaches the two students to communicate with their mothers through body percussion, helping everyone to take the first step [towards understanding]. Even for students that do not require special education, many face a number of problems within their families. Initiating communication is a very important step; afterwards, nature takes its course.”

At the story’s conclusion, Ng Chung-man and her mother may not have become best friends overnight, but we have witnessed the starting point of their road to connection. Initiating communication may be difficult, and maintaining that connection is just as challenging. But if you remember how lucky you are to have someone by your side, you’ll always have the strength to carry on. James Liu

Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series 《陪着你走》,是賽馬會本地菁英創作系列的 第五個全新創作。藝術節陪伴着這個系列的發 展,一年一度,好像不經不覺,其實殊不容 易。從第一個作品歌劇《大同》( 2 0 1 5)到今 天的音樂劇場《陪着你走》,觀眾見證了我們 與藝術家、演出者和後台人員共同創造的一個 又一個舞台;體裁、形式儘管大異其趣,但都 切合系列的精神—展現本地創作菁英的獨特才 華,為他們提供盡量優良的條件和環境,創作 本地藝壇難得一見的新作品。 六年下來,除了上述兩部作品,我們還製作了 街舞劇《炫舞場》( 2 0 1 6)、音樂與詩歌交融 的《世紀.香港》音樂會( 2 0 1 7)及創新粵劇 《百花亭贈劍》( 2 0 1 8),題材皆與香港及中 華文化息息相關,而形式及創意皆有所創新。 如果要做一個小小的總結,我們可以歸納以下 幾點,作為策劃這個系列的製作指標: 一、立足香港,發掘有特色及意義的新內容, 配以新鮮之舞台表現形式,打破固有的創作及 製作規限,向難度挑戰。 二、促進不同範疇、界別及世代的藝術家衷誠

Always by Your Side is the fifth creation of the Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series. HKAF has been accompanying the development of this series, and while these once-a-year events seem to pass by with the blink of an eye, they are no simple affairs. From the first production of the opera Datong: The Chinese Utopia (2015) to today’s music theatre production, the audience has witnessed our journey with artists, performers and backstage personnel at every stage. Though the genres and forms may vary, each work captures the spirit of the series: to showcase the unique talents of local creatives and provide a creative environment conducive to creating the types of new works that are rarely found in the local arts scene.

To achieve the above production goals, each work must undergo a lengthy process of design, development and production. The results aren’t guaranteed, but every year, the investment and risks are worth it; each production is a valuable learning experience. Six years on and, in addition to the above - mentioned works, we have produced the street dance drama Danz Up (2016), the staged cantata Hong Kong Odyssey (2017), and the innovative Cantonese opera Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers (2018). The themes of these productions resonate with Hong Kong and Chinese cultures and are innovative in concept and form. To bring this to a point, the mission of the series can be summed up as follows:

Tang Wai-kit graduated from the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), majoring in acting. He studied mime at the École Internationale de Mimodrame de Paris Marcel Marceau from 1989 to 1992. From 1992 to 1998, he taught at the HKAPA School of Drama. From 1998 to 2002, he pursued a master’s degree in directing in London, while working on local productions. From 2000 to 2007, he performed in various theatre productions and taught university acting courses part-time; he returned to Hong Kong in 2007 and became the Artistic Director of We Draman Group. As a director, his credits include: Wild Boar, Chronicle of a Blood Merchant and The Unexpected Man (We Draman/HKAF); and The Crowd and Danz up (HKAF), among others. His self-directed, self-acted works include: Doubt (John Patrick Shanley); The Woman in Black (We Draman); and University of Laughs (The Nonsensemakers), among others. He has also acted in We Draman’s The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?, Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Murder in San Jose, and more. Tang has won numerous awards, including: Best Director and Best Actor at the 19th Hong Kong Drama Awards for University of Laughs; the Drama Award at the 9th Chinese Drama Festival for Chronicle of a Blood Merchant; and Best Actor in the 7th Hong Kong Theatre Libre for Absurdity, Existence. He has worked in the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies (1992–1998) and at the Alliance of Theatre Professionals of Hong Kong as Vice-President (2015–2017) and President (2017–present).

Roger Lee was an avid film lover during his school days in Hong Kong before immigrating with his family to the US at age 19. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Business, he worked as a CPA tax accountant for Singer Company in San Francisco and New York for seven years, and created 8mm experimental short films in his after-work hours. His short film portfolio helped him land his first media job at Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) as an assistant director. At RTHK, he directed two half-hour episodes for the Love Series in 1983. He returned to RTHK in 2013 as a freelancer to direct two half-hour episodes on the subject of retired housemaids for the Golden Age documentary series. His experience as a producer and financial controller in the film industry included three collaborations with film director Ann Hui in Summer Snow (winner of the Best Actress Award for Josephine Siao at the 1995 Berlin Film Festival), A Simple Life (winner of the Best Actress Award for Deanie Ip at the 2011 Venice Film Festival) and Our Time Has Come (winner of Best Film at the 2018 Hong Kong Film Awards). A Simple Life was based on the true story of his housemaid, Taojie, who worked for four generations of the Lee family over 60 years. His memoir, Taojie and Me, was published in March 2012. Lee was the playwright and production consultant for the HKAF-commissioned play The Amahs in 2015.

Kwok Chui-yi graduated from the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in acting. She was a full-time actress in Chung Ying Theatre Company from 2010 to 2012. In 2017, she studied acting under Philippe Gaulier in France. She is currently a theatre freelancer, a member of the Black Bird Theatre, and an instructor of Radix Troupe’s acting courses. Kwok was awarded the Outstanding Actress Award at the Hong Kong Theatre Libre and has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the Tragedy/Drama and Comedy/Farce categories at the Hong Kong Drama Awards, as well as Best Script at the Hong Kong Theatre Libre. Her performance works include: An Accidental Rainbow (Radix Troupe); Magic Tofu Flower (The Radiant Theatre); Puzzle, choreographed by Flora Hon and Kelvin Lam (Dance On Series); The Lesson I Learnt in Bangkok (Actors’ Family); Gap Life (The Whole Theatre); Black Monday (New Vision Arts Festival – O Theatre Workshop); Freedom of Expression (Black Bird Theatre); and HKAF’s Journey to Home. She wrote the script for Black Bird Theatre’s Suck At Love, Prospects Theatre’s A Lonely Planet B, Actor’s Family’s The Lesson I Learnt in Bangkok and Joe Wong’s monodrama Where is my batman? She has also written television scripts for RTHK. She directed HK International Arts Carnival’s facehome, Radix Troupe’s Radix Series: The Watching Dead, and Theatre Farmers in Macau’s Freedom of Expression. In 2014, Kwok created her first monodrama No One Party, and worked with The Whole Theatre on its re-run the following year.

Veronica Lee graduated from the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, majoring in composition. She received a diploma in audio engineering from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and became one of the few female sound engineers in Hong Kong. She left Anthony Wong’s People Mountain People Sea Studio in 2011 and is now working in Chan Kwong-wing’s Click Music as a composer and producer in music, advertisements, film, theatre and record production. She has worked with Hong Kong and Taiwanese singers such as Anthony Wong, Faith Yang, Jeff Chang, Joey Yung, at17, Denise Ho and others. Lee is also co-founder of the bands Minimal, Materialgirl, 100% with Arion Au Yeung, Sandee Chan and Mavis Fan respectively and remains active in the independent music industry, garnering critical acclaim in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Lee enjoys working on visual and theatre media soundtracks. She has worked with theatre companies like Zuni Icosahedron, Mr Wing Theatre Company, Windmill Grass Theatre and Dionysus Contemporary Theatre. She often works on music compositions for film and television. Her works include Ming Ming, My Ex-Wife’s Wedding, Diva, Endless Nights in Aurora, The Empty Hands, Napping Kid and The Lady Improper. She won the Best Original Film Music award at the 34th Hong Kong Film Awards for her work on The Midnight After. She has also worked with commercial brands like Agnès b., Fujifilm, McDonald’s, Hang Seng Bank Limited, New World Development Co Ltd. and the Occupational Safety and Health Council, among others.

He debuted in 2004; his self-titled album Endy Chow EP, together with his first solo album The Greenhouse Balloon, won him the Best New Artist Award at various Hong Kong music awards ceremonies. In 2006, he debuted the band Zarahn, formed in collaboration with his childhood friend. His solo hits include Black Eyes, Underground Street, Seoul is Sinking, Sometimes, Children Song and No Return. Chow has also composed for other singers, such as Denise Ho’s The Science of Crying, Eason Chan’s Four Seasons, Miriam Yeung’s Kissing all the Girls and Juno Mak’s Reykjavik. Chow has moved beyond singing to explore theatre, film and television, including work as a music video director. He has been the lead actor in the drama Butterfly Lovers, ViuTV’s 3 x 1, and the films Cocktail and Love is Cold.

In 2012, Chan founded the charity Arts’ Options, devoted to the promotion of lifelong education in the arts. She is now an examiner at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and an adjudicator of the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies and Hong Kong Theatre Libre. Chan has won numerous theatre performance awards, including three Best Supporting Actress accolades at the Hong Kong Drama Awards and a Best Actress award at the Hong Kong Theatre Libre for Theatre Space’s The Woman with 27 Children in 2018. She has appeared in many film and television productions and has recently begun directing, with several nominations for Best Director.

Cecilia Ng is an actress, vocal trainer and acting instructor. She is currently the Associate Artistic Director of Radix Troupe and an examiner and assessor for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s drama category. In 1996, Ng graduated from the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) in acting. She obtained her master’s degree from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney in 2007, majoring in Voice/Text Training. She has twice won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress accolades at the Hong Kong Drama Awards. From 1998 to 2001, Ng was a full-time actress at Chung Ying Theatre Company, and from 2001 to 2011, she was a full-time lecturer at the HKAPA School of Drama, teaching acting and vocal training. Since 2011, she has been active in theatre performance and vocal training.

To was the director of RTHK’s cultural and music programmes, hosting music and talk shows. In 2003, she released her solo album, People Freeze Frame; in 2005, she became a Liberal Studies instructor at the University of Hong Kong. In 2014, she returned to RTHK, hosting parent–child, mental health and entertainment news programmes.

Mill Ho has been working in theatre, film and television as an actor, director, and drama instructor for many years. Ho has worked with the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Chung Ying Theatre Company and TVB, among others. He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1990, majoring in acting; in 1989 and 1990, he was awarded the Most Outstanding Actor Award and scholarships from the academy. Ho also completed an MFA in Theatre Education at HKAPA. He was nominated as Best Supporting Actor (Comedy/Farce) at the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies’ Hong Kong Drama Awards for his role as Ming in Actors Family’s Under Construction. His directorial work Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! was praised by RECAP853 theatre critics as a directorial and production masterpiece. He is now an adjudicator for the Hong Kong Drama Awards and is the founder and art director of Comedy Battle.

Even Lam graduated from the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with An Advanced Diploma in Acting (1991) and an MFA in Directing (2018). Lam has been a drama educator for more than 28 years. From 1991 to 1997, he was a full-time actor for the Exploration Theatre. In 1999, he founded Jumbo Kids Theatre. Lam directed Magic Gem (Little Mountain Arts Association, Macau), The Ten Brothers and The Last Journey to the West (Macau and Shanghai World Expo versions in 2010). Some of his recent directorial works include: Toasty’s Day Dreaming (2016, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017), I Don Quixote (MFA Directing Thesis Production) and Snail and Whale Travel Around the World (2018). He was a member of the Consultation Panel for the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (2009–2017), a reviewer for the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies and an adjudicator and instructor for the Hong Kong School Drama Festival. He is now artistic director and theatre manager for Jumbo Kids Theatre and an examiner of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Donald Chan

Gladys Liu is an experienced stage actor, producer, drama programmer and drama education planner. She is currently the executive director and actress-in-residence of Drama Gallery, an examiner and reviewer for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s drama category, and a reviewer for the JCCAC Black Box Theatre. Liu obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Acting at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and studied musical performance in New York at HB Studio. She was previously a full-time actress at Exploration Theatre and ATV, and was drama instructor at the Hong Kong Baptist University and the School of Drama at the HKAPA. She won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress (Comedy/Farce) twice at the Hong Kong Drama Awards. 香港音樂人。醉心於創作另類節奏,並加入民族敲擊樂器配搭出新穎的聲音。嘿嘿於 2012 年與友人組成獨立女子樂隊「雞蛋蒸肉餅」,與隊員烘焙出嶄新音樂類型「算 術民謠」。成團至今已錄製了三張唱片,並有幸獲邀到美國、冰島、日本、澳洲、韓 國以及大中華地區的音樂節演出。曾合作歌手包括黃耀明、何韻詩、林二汶、盧凱彤、 6 號 @RubberBand、小肥及 Emmy The Great 等。

2011 年畢業於香港演藝學院舞台及製作藝術學院,主修舞台及服裝設計,擔任舞台 / 場景設計的作品包括《公園 裡》、《空凳上的書簡 2:繼續書寫》、《最後一次西遊》、《烏合之眾》及《大汗推拿》等。舞蹈設計作品包括: 《紅樓.夢三闋》、《紫玉成煙》、《千里走單騎》等。近年,與何應豐聯合設計的《咏嘆調》及《紅樓.夢三 闋》分別獲得香港舞蹈聯盟最值得表揚佈景設計及傑出舞台設計。

Ng Cheuk-hei (Heihei) is a local musician devoted to experimenting with alternative rhythms and creating new sounds with folk percussion instruments. In 2012, Heihei co-founded the independent female band GDJYB with her friends. Together, they have experimented with an innovative new genre: Math Folk. GDJYB has since recorded three albums and has been invited to perform in music festivals in the US, Iceland, Japan, Australia, Korea and the Greater China region. The band has worked with renowned artists such as Anthony Wong, Denise Ho, Eman Lam, Ellen Joyce Loo, Mau Ho Cheong@Rubberband, Terrance Siufay and Emmy the Great.

Jan Wong graduated from the HKAPA School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts in 2011, majoring in theatre and costume design. His works as a set designer includes: The Park, Special Delivery 2: Politely Intractable Still, Heading West 3, The Crowd, The Massage King, among others. His designs for dance productions include Reveries of The Red Chamber, Waiting Heart and Guan Yu’s Ride of 1,000 Miles. Recently, his work on The Island Whisperers and Reveries of the Red Chamber with Ho Ying-fung won the Hong Kong Dance Alliance’s Outstanding Set Design Award and Outstanding Stage Design Award.

Cedric Chan Chit/Piano 陳思捷是一位融合古典與現代風格的鋼琴家及作曲家 ,也是福音音樂會「Madshow」 音樂總監,以及著名色士風鋼琴二人組「朱思馬即」成員。2015 年憑第三張專輯《命 運》榮獲 IFPI 國際唱片業協會全年最暢銷古典、戲曲唱片大獎。 陳思捷畢業於香港演 藝學院,主修鋼琴演奏,師承羅乃新女士;2016 年與「樂聚.管樂」演奏歌舒詠的《藍 色狂想曲》。 流行曲作品包括《先入為主》、《棋王》、《浪漫時代》、《我選擇笑》、 《幽靈》、《24》及《寵物的畢業禮》等;亦曾參與《明月幾時有》、《一個好爸爸》 及《衝上雲霄》等影視作品的音樂演出。 此外,陳思捷亦投身鋼琴教育,現為全港 學生音樂比賽大會主要評委。 Cedric Chan is a pianist and composer who merges classical and modern music. He is musical director of the gospel concert Madshow and a member of the saxophone and piano duet Chu Sze Magic. His third album, Destiny, was named the Best Selling Classical Album of 2015 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). In 2016, he performed Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the orchestra Musicphilic Winds. His pop song credits include: Preconception, The Chess Master, Romantic Times, I Choose to Smile, Ghosts, 24 and Pet Graduation. He has participated in the music production for several well-known films and television series, such as Our Time Will Come, Run Papa Run and Triumph in the Skies. Chan is devoted to piano education and is now the main adjudicator of the Hong Kong Student Music Competition. Chan graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in piano, and is a student of Ms Nancy Loo.

He has designed costumes for productions including: W Theatre’s Les Hommes et Les Femmes (nominated for Best Costume Design at the 24th Hong Kong Drama Awards), Unknown, I Want It That Way and Hate You in a Second; Dionysus Contemporary Theatre’s Le Dieu Du Carnage; HKAF’s A Floating Family; Windmill Grass Production’s No Place Like Home; Emperor Entertainment’s Witness for the Prosecution and My Very Short Marriage, among others.

Yeung Tsz-yan Lighting Designer 畢業於香港演藝學院科藝學院,獲頒藝術學士學位,主修舞台燈光設計。在學期間憑香港演藝學院作品《菲爾德》 獲香港舞台劇獎最佳燈光設計。畢業後再憑同流《關愛》、香港話劇團《安.非她命》、《結婚》及《父親》五 度獲此殊榮。2012 年憑香港舞蹈團作品《雙燕 - 吳冠中名畫隨想》獲第十四屆香港舞蹈年獎「最值得表揚舞美」。 2011 年及 2015 年獲代表香港參加布拉格舉行的舞台設計四年展。現為自由身舞台工作者。 Yeung Tsz-yan graduated from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Lighting Design. During her studies, her work on Phaedra was awarded Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards, an award which she received again for her subsequent work on We Draman’s Iron and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s Attempts on Her Life, Marriage and The Father Le Père. In 2012, she received the Outstanding Design for Dance Award at the 14th Hong Kong Dance Alliance Dance Awards for Two Swallows: Ode to Wu Guanzhong. Ha Yan-pui is a graduate of the Theatre, Sound and Music Recording Department at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
