衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝術節陣容鼎盛，共有超過1700名來自香港和世界各地的藝術家傾力演出，為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩，當代及古典音樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出，均盡顯精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築群，即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館，會在兩個周末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演，供公眾免費入場觀賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣場、監獄操場，甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社，首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台，場內設有不同創意領域的工作坊，觀眾並可以欣賞一些創作中的作品，感受藝術家的多元創意。除了精彩表演，藝術節亦一如以往，悉心籌備各項教育和外展活動，致力培育本地藝術人才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的藝術活動。此外，藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大師班等「加料節目」，讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術家互動接觸，了解節目的幕後製作過程。衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的藝術發展，成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款者的大力支持，令每年的藝術節圓滿成功，大獲好評。謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅，留下愉快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Every theatre work can become a journey, moving through different situations, moods and intuitions, catching you by surprise. It’s not a show that’s happening each night; it’s a ritual, an apparition, a unique gesture binding those who act with those who watch as they breathe in unison. To stage a piece on “joy” is to search for that singular circumstance, to cross rivers of extreme sentiment—angst, happiness, pain, enthusiasm—to try and capture at last, in an instant, the explosion of joy. Rather than freezing into images, sounds, or stage directions, Pippo Delbono and the actors of his company try each night to push one step further in the direction of that unbound exaltation, that scorching intuition. So bring in the clowns, the circus and its dance. Here is the memory of a shaman who, through madness, sets souls free. Here are the melancholy chords of tango and stifled cries from the floor of the house. Here’s a bounty of visions chasing one another, forming and morphing and fading into the next: hundreds of little paper boats; coloured rags strewn like waves of that Mare Nostro, “Our Father Sea who art not in Heaven” of Erri De Luca’s secular prayer; and the final floral explosion that Pippo created with fleuriste Thiérry Boutémy. Delbono’s actors go up on stage, one by one. Taking the audience by hand, each in his way, they make each one a travel companion, a part of this endless search. Personal stories, masks, clowneries, memories—all fleeting images of people reaching for joy. Thus, every night is a dot on the map; every fragment is a single step on the path. The journey never ends; the kaleidoscopic wheel of images and emotions keeps on turning. Each night, a neverending quest for joy comes to life onstage.

Director’s Note 我選擇以「快樂」作為劇作名稱，因為快樂是一個讓我害怕的詞語，讓我聯想到快樂的家庭照、快樂的小孩和令人快樂的景色……但他們都已經離去，他們都是假的。我曾被列夫．托爾斯泰的小說《伊凡．伊里奇之死》深深觸動，主角是一個將死之人，在生命的最後幾天，接納了自己的存在，甚至包括生命中最痛苦的時刻。這是我創作的開始。但之後在探索快樂的過程中，我又走上了不同的道路。《快樂大本營》是我與同行了二十多年的劇團的最後一個里程碑。劇團經過演員和舞者多次商討而誕生，但他們本身都是於不同人生路上行走的人。在眾人之中，我首先想到了波波，他在精神病院居住了長達四十四年，聾啞而文盲的他成為了我的劇作、電影與歌劇的主演。2014 年 9 月，我在巴黎安東尼．加爾伯特紅屋舉辦的作品展「我的母親及其他人」，正是獻給波波的。他是一個真正徹底改變了戲劇語言的人，他與眾不同，全然改變了我的戲劇作品，以及對待生活和戲劇的態度。此劇的製作正是這個故事的核心。劇中，波波的聲音及他的回憶為馬戲團注入靈魂和一種純真。正如我在演出中提到，他帶來了戲劇深層的秘密。除了波波，還有患唐氏綜合症、與我共事二十多年的賈尼路卡。

I have chosen to title my new theatre production La Gioia (Joy)—a word which scares me, which reminds me of some joyful family pictures, of joyful children, of joyful landscapes. All of them are dead; all of them fake. I was very impressed by Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich, a novella in which the main character, in the last days of his life, reconciles with his whole existence, including the saddest moments of his life. This was the start. But later the creative process of joy moved along different paths. La Gioia is the last landmark of a path I have been travelling along for over twenty years with my theatre company. This company of mine was born through meetings with actors and dancers, but primarily with people coming from different walks of life. Above all, I think of Bobò, who lived for over 44 years in a psychiatric asylum. Deaf-mute, illiterate. He became the main actor of my theatre, films and opera productions, and to him I dedicated a large exhibition, Ma mère at les autres (My mother and the others), at the Red House Foundation Antoine de Galbert in Paris in September 2014. I am talking about a man who has revolutionised theatre languages. His being different has strongly transformed my work and attitude towards theatre and life. This theatre production is the heart of this story. In this production, Bobò's voice and the memory of him bring the soul of the circus and a certain innocence. He brings, as I say in the performance, the deep secret of Theatre. And there is Gianluca, the man with Down syndrome who has been working with me for two decades, since he was a boy.

與很多所謂的「社會劇場」不同，我的目的從來不是去治癒或者讚頌他們。我們一向保持一種開放、自信的工作關係，將獨特的真相帶上舞台，不斷為他人探索及演繹生活中的故事。在劇場裏，我們仔細地聆聽、觀看和感受，這種精準在一般表演中並不常見。在這條道路上，也有許多人與我同行廿多年。我把《快樂大本營》也稱作「通向快樂的路途」，這場表演中我們走過了苦痛，勇往直前，為找尋快樂不斷奮鬥。在我的劇場中，我常常用語言告訴觀眾這條通向快樂的路，但也通過身體動作和舞蹈指引人尋找快樂︰

I never set out to cure or extol them (as so often happens in “social theatre” experiences). It has always been an open and confident working relationship among artists intent on bringing to the stage a unique truth, researching and performing stories for other human beings, hearing, watching and feeling the auditorium with a precision rarely found in standard performances. And there are all the other ones who have been following this road with me for over twenty years. La Gioia or, as I call it, “A Path Towards Joy”, is a performance which walks through pain, marching on and fighting in search of joy. As it always happens in my theatre productions, I tell the audience about this path through words, but also with dance and the body:

“Joy is no result, no fact, no thing, no place. Joy engenders space; it loosens, it makes a void. To preserve joy, you don’t need a jar; you need a pact. You have to decide that joy is the path of your life.” In the creative process of this latest production, I wanted to go back to a set aesthetic that is more similar to my previous theatre productions, when the set was poor, more essential and more similar to an empty space.

This space is covered step-by-step with simple elements, which lead us to different places, as if they were the seasons of time. At one point, I tell Gianluca: pain will pass, sadness will pass, and joy will return. In this production, you can find the whole story of my company. I could say that it is about meeting each other. But the recurrent theme could also be “madness”: my madness, and our madness in our times. But, in today’s madness made of darkness, shadowy landscapes and black holes, I still want to shout: “Give me more light! Give me more light!”

Pippo Delbono’s theatre life draws vital energy from his experiences with Odin Teatret, Pina Bausch, and the study of Oriental disciplines. Yet his true edge comes from prioritising feelings and honesty over rules and methods. Born in Varazze, Italy in 1959, Delbono explores onstage the fertile ground between the public and personal, autobiography and history. In recent years, his experimentation has developed into an investigation of voice and words. This commitment, already apparent in his films Amore Carne (Love Flesh, 2011), Sangue (Blood, 2013) and Vangelo (Gospel, 2016), can also be found in more recent theatre productions such as Dopo la Battaglia (After the Battle, 2011), Orchidée (Orchids, 2013) and La Gioia (Joy, 2018).

Delbono’s theatre productions have been performed at theatres and festivals in more than fifty countries, including the Festival d'Avignon, Festival Grec de Barcelona, Theater Spektakel in Zurich, Festwochen in Vienna, Festival TransAmériques in Montreal, and the Venice Biennale. Enrico V (Henry V)—his only creation based on an existing play—is also the only Italian production of Shakespeare that has ever been invited to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2018, the Centre Pompidou in Paris held a retrospective of Delbono’s work, attracting approximately 18,000 visitors. More than just a theatre group, Compagnia Pippo Delbono—formed in 1987—is a wandering community that creates a new language for the stage and for life, or rather, for that inextricable knot between art and life that few dare to tackle. The company is made up of people who, first and foremost, share a similar nature: in constant precarity, loneliness and isolation, they have gravitated towards the theatre and its great capacity for sharing. An encounter with socially marginalized people marked a turning point in Delbono’s poetical research: that's how Barboni (Tramps, 1997) was born, which was awarded with a special UBU Prize. Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities; and the 2011 UBU prize for Best Theatre Production with Dopo la Battaglia. Since his role as Tancredi in L. Guadagnino’s 2009 film Io sono l’amore (I am love), Delbono has worked as an actor in several films. As a film director, his recent credits include: Guerra (War, 2003), presented at the 60th Venice International Film Festival and recipient of a David di Donatello Award for Best Documentary; Grido (Shout, 2006), presented at the Rome International Film Festival; and La Paura (Fear, 2009), filmed entirely with a mobile phone and presented at the Locarno Film Festival alongside a retrospective of his works. In June 2013, Le Monde called his film Amore Carne, winner of the Nyon Film Festival Jury Prize, one of the best films of the year. Delbono’s credits as an opera director include: P. Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana (Prix Abbiati) and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Teatro San Carlo; a theatrical version of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion at Teatro Massimo; and R. Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. Delbono has also collaborated with stars of other art forms. He conceived the concert “Amore Carne” with the violinist Alexander Balanescu, with whom he also collaborated on Dopo la Battaglia. He worked with Italian singer Petra Magoni and musician Ilaria Fantin on Il Sangue and with the singer and musician Enzo Avitabile on the concert Bestemmia d’amore (Love Swear, 2014). With guitar player Piero Corso, he realised the concert “La notte” (The Night, 2014) based on the works of writers BernardMarie and François Koltés. Delbono has published several books, including Barboni – Pippo Delbono's Theatre (Ubulibri, 1999); Récits de Juin (2008), Regards (2010) and Le don de soi (2018), published by Actes Sud; Le Corps de L'Acteur (Les Solitaires Intempestifs, 2004); and Corpi Senza Menzogna (2009) and Dopo La Battaglia – Poetical/Political Writings (2011) for Barbès, among others.

For the realisation of this production’s set, props, costumes and lights, Pippo Delbono worked closely with his company’s technical and artistic team on shaping items evoking frailty into a fundamental set. During rehearsals, some external artists also played a significant role in the creative process. The flower arrangements were realised by the Brussels-based French floral artist, Thierry Boutemy. His colourful endeavour was buoyed by the ingenuity and spontaneous creativity he picked up during his bucolic childhood. His bouquets carry us away to a delicate and luxuriant nature, unlocking both calm and chaotic beauty. Instinctively, he strives to rediscover the spontaneity of the original gesture and forget the stiffness of technical structures. Since working on Sofia Coppola's 2006 film Marie Antoinette, he has been a sought-after figure in highend fashion, art, film, and private weddings and events.

《快樂大本營》大部分的原創音樂都由法國音樂家和鋼琴家安東．巴塔耶所作，他曾與德爾邦諾在特定場地的活動及展覽會合作。劇作的最後一首歌《瘋狂》是由意大利音樂家尼高拉．托斯卡勞和德爾邦諾一同創作和演奏的。

Most of the original music pieces from La Gioia are composed by the French musician and pianist Antoine Bataille, with whom Delbono had previously worked on site-specific events and exhibitions. The final track, Madness, is composed and performed by the Italian musician Nicola Toscano together with Pippo Delbono himself.

An actor is a bird, one wing brushing the surface of earth, the other raised to the sky. Ciao, Bobò! Thank you for teaching us how to love life with your ineffable gracefulness and lightness. On a Friday afternoon, Bobò said farewell to us. Tiptoeing. Possibly only through calling him by his stage name can we share the story of this uncatchable tightrope walker—in life and on stage— in just a few words. Bobò was a theatre icon between two millenniums. He enchanted audiences the whole world over with his grace, his outer-space distance and his burning presence—from Paris to India, from St. Petersburg to Spain and on stages across Italy. His life has been a story of darkness and light. Bobò was sent to an asylum at age 16, and there he met Pippo Delbono at a theatre workshop. Right then and there, their deep and firm friendship began— a friendship which developed beyond language and beyond that curious fiction we call “reason”. Bobò and Pippo. Pippo and Bobò. Bobò became a part of Delbono’s theatre company in 1995, and from that moment on, accompanied Pippo and his theatre family on all their meticulous, arduous, jovial and painful excursions between life and theatre. Looking for an unconditional honesty in a vortex of masks, Pippo and Bobò danced hand-in-hand.

Bobò’s life was channeled into twelve theatre productions, as vast as twelve continents and as bright as twelve stars lighting our path. Bobò also served as the main actor in many of Pippo Delbono’s film productions. Together with all those who loved him and always will, we want to remember Bobò as an 82-year-old wise child amongst infinite joyful flowers, who was able to see, from his observation bench of La Gioia’s set, beyond any appearances…
