I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

瑞士默劇團自上世紀七十年代末在百老 匯公演三年後，開闢了視覺劇場的新形 式，又憑多套新作，再度奠定形體默劇 的先驅和傳奇地位。這些作品結合獨 特的光影設計、賦予物件生動有趣的 動作，並為人類狀況寫下歷久常新的洞 見，於舞台上製造驚喜連連的視覺效 果，不但為觀眾帶來玩味十足、觀感豐 富的劇場體驗，更可衝破文化隔閡，引 發想像力。 觀眾將欣賞到瑞士默劇團的全新創作， 當中除了加入新演員，也有廣受喜愛的 大型面具，以及形體動作。劇中更加入 了不少他們的經典趣劇。
Since its three-year run on Broadway in the late 1970s, the Switzerland-based theatre troupe Mummenschanz has pioneered a new form of visual theatre that has spawned multiple new genres. By creating a playful yet compelling experience through the inventive use of shadow, light, and creative manipulation of objects, Mummenschanz offers timeless insight on the human condition. The result is a visually stunning spectacle that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination. The audience will see brand new creations by the visionary Mummenschanz troupe with new performers, the large-scale masks you’ve grown to love and gymnastics. Mummenschanz’s new venture, Mummenschanz Reloaded, invites you away from the everyday and brings you on a journey beyond the familiar and into your limitless imagination. The new Mummenschanz programme was developed under the artistic direction of Floriana Frassetto, co-founder of Mummenschanz. Mum’s discoveries are often found by chance, through an ac cumul ation of c ontinu ing observation and openness to the materials around us. They take the objects of our everyday lives and animate them, drawing out a hidden poetic life. The company continues to be artisans of the imagination. With great courage and curiosity, they embark upon a series of new discoveries to write their next chapter in their unique language. Various sequences and new shapes inhabited by characters will move on stage and meet the audience. Mummenschanz welcomes the world into this playful, interactive, surreal and one-of-a-kind event.

際舞台如日方中的馬塞．馬素；若說是
爾奇與波薩德聯同意裔美國默劇演員弗
木偶師，他們並不會操弄木偶，卻會穿
洛里安娜．弗拉斯托創辦瑞士默劇團，
上覆蓋半身以至全身、由平常物件如發
在觀眾還未弄清劇團名字的讀音之際，
泡膠、抽氣管和廁紙卷等製成的面譜演
它已在美國一舉成名，於百老匯公演長
出。隱沒在面譜後的表演者、神祕而靜
達三年，並亮相《芝麻街》、《大青蛙
默的演出及陌生團名，為劇團添上一重

Yet before audiences could even pronounce Mummenschanz, the company the pair founded in 1972 with ItalianAmerican mime Floriana Frassetto became an instant success in the United States, playing a three-year run on Broadway and appearing on Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, American late-night television and even in an AT&T advertisement. For its 30th anniversary—an age that most theatre troupes never see—the company celebrated with a five-year world tour that required additional casts to satisfy audiences on multiple continents simultaneously.

If Mummenschanz’s endlessly reinvented sketches are now immediately recognizable, part of the company’s allure in the early days was that they seemed to come out of nowhere and could be placed nowhere as well. If they were mimes, they didn’t look or act like Marcel Marceau (who was at the apogee of his international fame in the 1970s). If they were puppeteers, they didn’t use marionettes, but rather donned halfor full-body masks made from derisively common found materials (Styrofoam, dryer vents, toilet paper rolls…). This obscuring of the performers’ identities, their enigmatic, silent performances, and their name only added to the Mummenschanz mystery. Most intriguing, however, was that these mimes in disguise seemed to walk a razor’s edge between children’s theatre and a conceptually complex, performance avant-

garde. Coaxing smiles from giant garbage bags and breathing anthropomorphic life into giant Slinkies, they were also pushing the boundaries of mime and puppetry into previously unimagined dimensions. Or were they? The riddle was enough to prompt a spoof of the company’s perceived hi-lo aims and aesthetics on The David Letterman Show (where they were also reimagined as Mummensquad, a hardhitting band of crime-fighting mimes). Although their sequences are always infused with humour and can look effortlessly childlike on stage, Mummenschanz’s genius did, in fact, emerge from rigorous training in a revolutionary approach to theatre. Schürch and Bossard were among the first students of the now legendary theatre teacher, Jacques Lecoq, whose pedagogy has become known internationally through the physical theatre of Simon McBurney’s Complicité (McBurney followed Schürch and Bossard at L’École Jacques Lecoq by some 15 years; other famous graduates include actor Geoffrey Rush, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and director Julie Taymor). Lecoq was a physical education teacher who studied mime and mask work with the great French mime innovator Jacques Copeau, at a time when theatre was undergoing profound interrogations in a quest for more authentic forms that would be “liberated” from text. His own pedagogy, which he always insisted was less a training for theatre than for life, relied on silent observation, improvisation and play, and the use of three types of masks to explore what Lecoq referred to as “la comédie humaine”. One of the lessons that Lecoq’s students often cite was that he prompted them in their investigations to ask not “what” nor even “how”, but “what next”. Mummenshanz’s

magic can be interpreted as a constant engagement with that essential question, seeking the previously unconsidered physical and emotional possibilities in the detritus of our modern existence as well as in objects that have strictly codified uses. In two of their most performed sequences, sections of exhaust piping play a whimsical game of catch with a balloon, and a pair of violins— worn as comically skinny masks with bulging eyes—fall in and out of love. In sketches like these, meaning in the subtlest of gestures is explored to amplify the emotions present in the most quotidian or the grandest of human interactions. Nearly 50 years later and still the most obvious torchbearers of Lecoq’s mask work, Mummenschanz remains as curious as ever about their physical surroundings, even as these have been profoundly changed by the technological innovations of the last half century. New sequences created by Frassetto (the last active founding member) play with the physical potential of language understood as a series of graphic signs in our text- and emojiexpressive age. Indeed, at a time when one of the most pressing questions we face in the digital age is the automatisation of labour and society, Mummenschanz’s theatre—however it might be defined—speaks to our need to humanise the machines among which we live, in ways that artificial intelligence may never be able to. Alexa can turn on our televisions, adjust the thermostat and keep us on schedule, but only Mummenschanz’s decidedly lo-fi mechanics present us objects that feel like we do, and that remind us, again and again, how it feels to be human. Fersen in Rome from 1967 to 1968. She completed her training as an actress attending a course in mime and acrobatics at Roy Bosier’s Teatro Studio. She then worked with Roy’s company in several school productions that toured Italy. The idea of founding Mummenschanz resulted from meeting, in late 1971, Andres Bossard and Bernie Schürch—two young Swiss clowns called Before and Lost. Frassetto became the third member of the new company, and together they co-created the repertoires, converting the spoken numbers to masked visuals. Frassetto has performed on tour worldwide for the last 45 years. Among her experiences were the choreography and costumes for Giancarlo Sbragia’s Faust and André Heller‘s musical Body and Soul, and an artistic collaboration with Isabelle Baudet for the children’s musical Oliver Twist in Lausanne, Switzerland.

She is a trained primary school teacher. Afterwards, she completed a three-year course at Comart, a school of physical theatre in Zurich. She won the 2009/10 physical theatre studentship award from Migros-Kulturprozent. Since 2010, she has worked as a freelance theatre artist in various productions. She is a co-founder of the troupe Paula fliegt and has had several engagements in theatre and music projects in Switzerland and abroad. In May 2015, Hermann became a member of the Mummenschanz company.

Oliver Pfulg was born in 1985 and grew up in Hombrechtikon, Switzerland. After his initial education as a draughtsman, he attended Comart in Zurich for three years; he graduated in 2010. Since then, he has been engaged at various theatres, including the Opera House Zurich, flowingdancecompany and MärliMusicalTheater. Pfulg is also a founding member of the street theatre group Paula fliegt. In 2015, he created an original play, apropos, together with Lena Wälly. Since May 2015, Pfulg has been a member of the Mummenschanz company.

At the age of 17, she joined the Zirkus Chnopf and the Cirque de Loin for three years. Following this, she entered the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Verscio. During her studies, she won the physical theatre studentship award from Migros-Kulturprozent twice. In 2014, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Theatre. Since then, Barrett has worked on various theatre projects, including: Poyo Furioso, directed by Hermes Gaido; Fiorenza Ensemble, directed by Eveline Ratering; and Commedia Origen Festival, directed by Fabrizio Pestilli. Since summer 2016, Barrett has been a member of the Mummenschanz company.

In his youth, he showed a strong interest in movement and art. He stood out in gymnastics and skateboarding, in which he finds a companion with whom he travels the world. Passionate for music, he perfected his skills in percussion and drums, which he continues to play in various bands. Through theatre, he discovered a means for full self-expression and entered the school for physical theatre, Accademia Teatro Dimitri, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 2015. He has performed in various theatre and cinema productions, including: Gilgamesh, directed by Patrizia Barbuiani; Gotthard 2016, directed by Volker Hesse; and Tutti Giù, directed by Niccolò Castelli. In July 2016, he started his journey with the Mummenschanz company.

With nearly ten years of experience in the entertainment business, Eric Sauge (Swiss) now specializes in lighting and machinery effects. He has travelled world-wide through his employment by large organisations. Through his many trips abroad, he acquired solid knowledge in technical and team management. On his return to Switzerland, he continued to train in the field of lighting for theatre and television events, in which he mainly occupied the roles of console operator and project manager. In 2014, he met Mummenschanz in Lausanne, and wishing to return to the theatre scene, he joined them as Technical Director.
