衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. I am grateful, too, to the many sponsors and donors who, each year, help make the Festival a resounding success. It is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome you to this performance at the 47th Hong Kong Arts Festival. This year, we celebrate artists and artworks “At Every Stage”. Not only do we spotlight exhilarating programmes at stages old and new across Hong Kong, but also reflect on the stage as a process of transformation. Leading artists at the peak of their careers perform alongside the next generation of rising stars. Classic repertoire is reinvented through brave homages and boldly experimental retellings, and the original designs, technologies and storytelling modes of new works crash through the boundaries of the traditional stage. I hope that this and many other performances at the 47th HKAF will provoke, inspire and delight you, and that in the course of viewing works at every stage, we may continue to envision the myriad possibilities of the arts. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

887 is a journey into the realm of memory. The idea for this project originated from the childhood memories of Robert Lepage. Years later, he plunges into the depths of his memory and questions the relevance of certain recollections. How does memory work? What are its underlying mechanisms? How does a personal memory resonate within collective memory? 887 considers various commemorative markers—the names of parks, streets, stelae and monuments—and the historical heritage around us that we no longer notice. Consequently, the play also focuses on oblivion, the unconscious, and this memory that fades over time and whose limits are compensated for by digital storage, mountains of data and virtual memory. In this era, how is theatre, an art based on the act of remembering, still relevant today? All of these questions are distilled into a story in which Lepage, somewhere between a theatre performance and a conference, reveals the suffering of an actor who—by definition, or to survive—must remember not only his text, but also his past, as well as the historical and social reality that has shaped his identity.

The themes of memory and theatre have always been closely connected, primarily because theatre is probably the form of expression that best embodies collective memory. The proof is that, throughout history, the first thing a totalitarian regime does to ensure the eradication of a culture is to burn the books—an act that’s usually followed by killing the singers, the storytellers, and the actors who carry the living memory of songs, poems and theatrical works. In a more pragmatic way, memory is strongly tied to theatre because those practicing it must put a lot of effort into memorisation. When an actor makes his or her first onstage debut, aren’t the first comments after the premiere usually, “You’ve got a great memory!” or “How did you learn all those lines?” So, it’s normal that cognitive decline and dementia are themes that are, at the very least, troubling for an actor. I never would have guessed that the exploration of personal memory I embarked on to create this show would lead me to the complexities of the class struggle and identity crisis of 1960s-era Québec. It’s as though the most distant memories of personal events are incomplete if they don’t take into account the social context in which they happened. This show is, therefore, not the discourse of an adult promoting a cause but rather a journey into a pre-adolescent’s memory, where the political and the poetic are often conflated. 887 is, for me, a humble attempt to delve into a history with a small “h” to better understand the one with the big “H”.

Lights dim, curtain parts, and excited whispers are abruptly hushed. To the unenlightened, the premise may not sound particularly exciting: it is a one-man show set against the backdrop of the Soviet-American moon-race. The protagonists are two brothers in Québec—an academic with a thesis on space exploration and a gay weatherman—united by their mother’s death. But theatre fanatics know better: after all, it’s Robert Lepage. There are satellite images of the earth, chalkboards, spectral talking heads in portals, a man riding a motorbike through a path lined with ghostly negatives of trees. Two and a half hours later, audience members emerge stunned: “It felt like you were transported to completely different places the whole time,” one said after a show in Auckland in 2018. This is The Far Side of the Moon, a critically acclaimed work by the Canadian theatre auteur first unveiled in 2000. It proceeded to tour 45 cities, with a stop at the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2003. Nearly two decades after its initial run, it was restaged in Australia, New Zealand and Korea for a revival in 2018, rapturing critics still: "It’s hard to believe The Far Side of the Moon is a one-man show,” writes Guardian critic Brigid Delaney. Rober t Lepage—hailed an “alchemist of modern imagistic theatre”—was born in 1957 in Québec City. He entered the Conservatoire d’art dramatique to study theatre when he was 17, and worked as an actor, author and director upon graduation. His works would go on to win him numerous awards and international recognition, and in 1994 he founded Ex Machina, his own theatre company. The following year, his work was brought to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for the first time with Polygraph, a "metaphysical detective story” and play noir presented by Théâtre Repère. Now, the theatre visionary is returning to the city, and this time, he will be onstage as an actor himself. For the 2019 edition of the Festival, Lepage performs 887, named after the street

number on which his childhood home resides in Québec. Drawing largely from autobiographical material, the play explores tension between the city's Francophone and Anglophone worlds—a metaphor, according to Lepage, for Canada and its linguistic divide. This is not the first time that Lepage has incorporated personal history into his work. Canadian critic Richard Ouzounian once astutely commented: "Every show that Robert Lepage creates is ultimately about one thing— Robert Lepage.” But Ouzounian was not implying narcissism or egocentrism; rather, it was a reference to how Lepage has, through theatre, confronted his sexuality (The Andersen Project, 2005), experiences with drugs (Needles and Opium, 1991), and even “problems of communication he lived through in a home with two Anglophone and two Francophone children” (in the nine-hour multilingual epic, Lipsynch, 2008). In his current production visiting the city, Lepage tackles this last issue head-on. Lepage’s adopted elder siblings had grown up in English-speaking Nova Scotia, but Lepage and his younger sister were raised in Francophone Québec City. This would be a conflict familiar to Hong Kong’s bi- and trilingual audiences, which have long struggled to reconcile the political and cultural divides between three languages. In a time when everything can be streamed from the comfort of one’s home and even going to the cinema feels like an effort, Lepage understands what it takes to lure audiences to a production: "It has to be something you can only see in the theatre, and it has to be worth it,” Lepage has said. By continuously reinventing the theatre-going experience and creating stories that cannot be replicated on the screen, Lepage has proven why the art form remains compelling in this day and age. Museums and monuments are tangible “sites of memory”—symbols of a shared past and common heritage. Like tradition and language, they fulfil a function in defining particular groups of people. Theatre brings us together in similar ways. Whether formal buildings or informal spaces, they are physical repositories of shared experiences and memories. Familiar and at ease with our culture, we feel “at home” there, with like-minded others, in the same space and time. In the words of Canadian auteur, Robert Lepage, “Themes of memory and theatre have always been closely connected, because theatre is probably the form of expression that best embodies collective memory.” Lepage’s 887 is a standout production at this year’s Festival that touches on these themes. It explores the meanings of “memory” and “home” using remarkable design and staging to tell its story. On one level, 887 is just fascinating autobiography, exquisitely related. With a title referencing his first address, 887 Murray Avenue in 1960s Québec City, Lepage weaves a tale of history and memory about his French-Canadian childhood and adolescence, growing up in a period of political change and tension between the (mainly working class) French and English-speaking communities.

Personal recall broadens into larger questions of cultural memory, as we get a potted history of Québec from colonial times to the controversial 1967 “Vive le Québec libre!” speech by then visiting French President Charles de Gaulle, up to the present day. But the motivation for making 887 was far more than a desire to revisit the past and home. Lepage’s real concern is with the concept of memory itself, provoked by a frightening occasion when he found himself unable to remember the words of a wellknown poem he was due to recite at an important public event. 887 asks, why do we remember some things but not others? What is memory, how does it work, and what are its mechanisms? Lepage is a superb storyteller; we hang on every word. He illustrates his narrative with a hi-tech, rotating set that is a perfect, scaleddown replica of his old neighbourhood, like an architect’s model or huge doll’s house populated with miniature neighbours, friends and family members. It turns and spins; walls swing and slide open to reveal rooms and memories that come alive with video screens and projections. “Theatre is the grand sport of memory,” Lepage stated in a recent interview. “People ask, ‘How did you remember all those lines?’” But 887 is much more than a test of recall. In this extraordinary production, Lepage’s home and memories start as his own, but through his performance and magical stagecraft, they become ours too. Versatile in every form of theatre craft, Robert Lepage is equally talented as a director, playwright, actor and film director. His creative and original approach to theatre has won him international acclaim and shaken the dogma of classical stage direction to its foundations, especially through his use of new technologies. He graduated from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Québec and studied in Paris in 1978. In 1984, his play Circulations toured Canada, followed by The Dragons’ Trilogy (1985), Vinci (1986), Polygraph (1987) and Tectonic Plates (1988). From 1989 to 1993, he was Artistic Director of the Théâtre français at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Meanwhile pursuing his own creative projects, he directed Needles and Opium (1991), Coriolanus, Macbeth and The Tempest (1992). With A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1992), he became the first North American to direct a Shakespeare play at the Royal National Theatre in London. In 1994, he founded Ex Machina, then wrote and directed his first feature film, Le Confessional, followed by Polygraph (1996), Nô (1997), Possible Worlds (2000) and The Far Side of the Moon (2003). In 2013, he co-directed Triptych with Pedro Pires, an adaptation of the play Lipsynch.

Mill. For the Grand Bibliothèque’s 10th anniversary, Ex Machina created the virtual reality exhibition, The Library at Night. Lepage made a grand entrance in the opera world with Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung (1993). His continued with La Damnation de Faust (1999), followed by 1984 (2005), The Rake’s Progress (2007), The Nightingale and Other Short Fables (2009) and Das Rheingold (2010). His latest stagings include The Tempest (2012) and L'Amour de loin (2015). Lepage’s work has been recognized by many awards. Among the most important: the Légion d’honneur (2002); the Denise Pelletier Prize (2003); the Hans Christian Andersen Prize (2004); the Stanislavski Award (2005); the Prix Europe (2007); the Médaille de la ville de Québec (2011); the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT (2012); and the Tenth Glenn Gould Prize (2013). In 2015, he was made Compagnon des Arts et des lettres du Québec, for his contribution to developing and extending the influence of the Québec culture.

With Ex Machina, he created for the stage The Seven Streams of the River Ota (1994), Geometry of Miracles (1998), The Far Side of The Moon (2000), a new version of The Dragons’ Trilogy (2003), The Andersen Project (2005), Lipsynch (2007), The Blue Dragon (2008), Eonnagata (2009), Playing Cards (2012) and a new staging of Needles and Opium (2013). In 1994, when Rober t Lepage asked his collaborators to help find a name for his new company, he had one condition: the word theatre could not be part of the name. Ex Machina is thus a multidisciplinary company bringing together actors, writers, set designers, technicians, opera singers, puppeteers, computer graphic designers, video artists, contortionists, and musicians. Ex Machina’s creative team believes that the performing arts—dance, opera, music—should be mixed with recorded arts— filmmaking, video art, and multimedia—and that there must be meetings between scientists and playwrights, set painters and architects, and artists from Québec and the rest of the world. New artistic forms will surely emerge from these gatherings. Ex Machina wants to rise to the challenge and become a laboratory, an incubator for a form of theatre that will reach and touch audiences from this new millennium.

Her books in English include The Anglos: The Hidden Face of Québec City (Éditions Sylvain Harvey, 2005) and Iron Bars and Bookshelves: A History of the Morrin Centre (Baraka Books, 2016).

Trained as a graphic designer, he completed his education at l'Ecole francophone des attachés de presse (ÉFAP) in 1994 and worked as a designer at the Carré Noir agency in Paris. From 1996 to 2013, he worked at Cossette, where several of his social campaigns received national and international awards. He began his collaboration with Ex Machina in 2005 with The Image Mill and was co-creator and image co-designer until the final edition in 2013. This was followed by work on the creation of 887 and the immersive exhibition The Library at Night, for which Blanchet directed the creation and co-signed the design with Robert Lepage. His career has been punctuated with collaborations in short films, shows, plays and publications.

Bjurman also provided the original idea for The Far Side of the Moon, co-wrote The Andersen Project, and worked as dramaturg for the Playing Cards project.

She also has worked with Théâtre Blanc, Nouveau Théâtre Expérimental, Théâtre L'Escaouette, Théâtre de la Vieille 17 and Théâtre du Trident. Saint-Amand has had the opportunity to work with the Nous sommes ici collective and Alexandre Fecteau, as well as with Steve Gagnon and Théâtre Jésus, Shakespeare et Caroline. She has travelled across Canada with Les trois exils de Christian E (Théâtre Sortie de secours). Since 2012, she has worked with Ex Machina on several occasions.

Since then, he has worked regularly on the company’s projects, including The Andersen Project, La Celestina, The Dragons’ Trilogy, 1984, The Blue Dragon, Eonnagata, La Tempête, SPADES and HEARTS from the Playing Cards tetralogy, and the 2013 version of Needles and Opium. Between projects with Ex Machina, he has worked with various renowned Canadian directors such as Daniel Brooks, Wajdi Mouawad and François Girard.

He has designed lighting for shows by Robert Lepage, Franco Dragone, Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. He was also involved in the creation and tour of Délirium, Cirque du Soleil’s first arena show. In recent years, his creative research on different applications of video and lighting for creating scenic environments has led to his participation in lighting, video and set design for Québec City’s New Year’s celebrations and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day events. He has also designed lighting and video for more than 20 broadcast television shows, on which he has also worked as director of photography. More recently, he has been creating lighting design for three productions by Québec City’s Théâtre du Trident: The Odyssey, The Laramie Project and Les Enrobantes.

He has also worked on projections for the 2014 Montreal Festival des Lumières and the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede. He has created video content for corporate events, television and music shows, museum exhibitions, and theatre productions including the play Icare by Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon.

Passionate about fine arts, he developed an interest in set design through working as a scenic painter in specialized studios. Between 2000 and 2008, Décarie worked as a stage technician on several theatrical productions and films in Québec. He became the technical director of Théâtre du Trident in 2009. In 2011, he completed his first set design for Véronique Coté’s Banquet and later for a children’s show at the Festival d'été de Québec, Le Grand Trotino. For the last several years, Décarie has been working primarily as an artistic director on film sets and a set designer for television shows. 887 marks his return to the theatre and his first collaboration with Ex Machina.

From 2015 to 2017, she was prop designer for 887 and set and prop designer for À toi pour toujours Marie Lou at Théâtre de la Bordée and Venir au Monde at Théâtre du Trident. She is also known for her work as prop designer for the television series Complexe G on TVA.
