I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Classic repertoire is reinvented through brave homages and boldly experimental retellings, and the original designs, technologies and storytelling modes of new works crash through the boundaries of the traditional stage. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Prologue: The Story
小青走過洪水肆虐後的廢墟,想起往昔的經
Xiao Qing walks through a land devastated by flooding, reflecting on all that has come to pass. She is half-snake and half-woman, companion to her beloved Madame White Snake. Many aeons ago, she was a man and her mistress a woman. Xiao Qing loved Madame White with an unrequited love. When he tried to take her by force, he was defeated and forced into exile. When they died, both were reincarnated as snakes in punishment for their evil ways. But the gods took pity on Xiao Qing and made him a female snake so that he could forever be with his love.
歷。她是半蛇半女人,伴隨在她最愛的白娘 子身邊。萬古以前,她是一位男子而白娘子 是一位淑女。小青一廂情願地愛著白娘子, 後來欲奪不果而遭流放。二人死後轉生為 蛇,以懲罰他們上一世的惡行。上天眷顧, 讓小青轉世成女性青蛇,永遠伴隨白蛇左 右。

The White Snake awakens to find she is a woman. She savours the feel of blood rushing through her; she touches her face, hair and body in wonder. Xiao Qing alerts her to a man passing by. Their eyes meet and they recognise each other from a prior life. Madame White asks Xiao Qing to bring the man to her. Xiao Qing conjures up spring rain. The man chivalrously offers Madame White shelter under his umbrella and leaves it with her. She asks him to come to her house to retrieve it.

Madame White waits impatiently for the stranger to arrive and asks Xiao Qing to be her matchmaker. Xiao Qing refuses, but Madame White angrily orders her to fetch the man. When he arrives, the man introduces himself as Xu Xian, an herbalist. Xiao Qing explains that Madame White is ill and needs his services. He takes her pulse and listens to her heart speaking of love. Madame White serves him her special tea of four seasons, and he confesses his passion for her. When he asks her to marry him, she makes him promise that he will allow her to leave with Xiao Qing on one night each month, without question or objection. She will not tell him where she goes (in fact, Xiao Qing and Madame White go to the river to shed their skin). Xu reluctantly agrees to this condition.

Madame White panics, knowing she has been discovered. The Abbot waits for Xu Xian to come home. He asks him if he knows who his wife truly is. This question stirs up Xu's pent-up suspicion. He confronts his wife, who is afraid to tell him the truth about herself. She tries to deflect his questions by telling him that she is pregnant. Believing the child is from her monthly trysts with a lover, a heartbroken Xu flees from her.

She believes that his love for her is dead. She takes the potion from him and drinks it. She is transformed back into a snake.

Madame White Snake. That name evokes a wellspring of childhood memories. I think of sucking on ice kachangs on a sweltering Singapore night as the white snake glides across the makeshift open-air opera stage accompanied by the cacophony of cars and trucks; of sitting crosslegged on the floor of my grandparents' home, glued to the grainy TV screen as she sings her love out to her mesmerized audience. The immortal snake’s quest for human love represented for us all—grandmother, great aunt, mother, nanny and children—the yearning for the ineffable and the courage to follow your heart. We sat for many Saturdays, millions of us all over Asia, to have our hearts broken again and again by love’s death. The legend of the White Snake is so important to the Chinese people that China has designated it an item of “intangible cultural heritage” along with Peking Opera and the Spring Festival. It originated with the Ur people over one thousand years ago as a folk tale to explain the yearly flooding by the Yellow River and has evolved through the centuries, reaching its apex during the Ming Dynasty. Countless Chinese operas, Chinese TV series and Chinese movies have been created from this legend. Yet while our collective Chinese consciousness is imbued with this centuries-old myth, it is little known in the West. For those of you who are not familiar with this legend, Madame White Snake is a transformation myth, the story of a white snake demon who yearns to be human to experience love. After one thousand years of meditation, the gods grant her wish. While she is transformed physically into a beautiful woman, her essence remains unchanged—she is still a snake and a demon to boot (although many maintain she becomes truly transformed by love). She falls in love with an herbalist, marries him and becomes pregnant, thus violating all traditional taboos—racial, ethnic,

cultural and religious. But an Abbot sees through her human form to the snake and, not surprisingly, disaster strikes. Her husband betrays her, and in the moment of betrayal, she is transformed back into a snake. Passion, Love, Fear, Deceit, Betrayal and Death! What wonderful material for opera! It takes passion to want to create opera. If you are not a performing arts company, it also takes a crazy belief that it is possible for an individual to transform that passion into reality. Charles (my husband and artistic partner), believed with me that from this ancient myth, we could create a truly unique new opera, one which would resonate with all peoples and break their hearts. Thus we embarked on this adventure to capture poetically in English the power of the Legend of the White Snake and combine it with the vigour of both Chinese and Western musical elements. What a journey it has been, dear Charles. The White Snake reaches for her dream, knowing she is defying destiny. Unlike many of your Chinese colleagues, you grew up listening to Western opera. Your mother was a singer, and you've somewhat abashedly admitted that one of your favourite composers is Puccini. Could you talk a little bit about your own background with opera? When I started to listen to opera as a child, the singing touched me. I didn't know the language, but I liked the melodies. Puccini and Tchaikovsky wrote the most beautiful melodies amongst all classical composers. My auntie brought many records from Moscow, and of course I heard my mother all the time—singing not just opera but also art songs, lieder. She gave lessons and often coached students at home. So I heard this all day long, sometimes for an entire summer. This was in

my ears for a long time. There are two schools of thought about writing opera: first, that it takes so long to learn that a composer should start as early as possible; and second, that it's better to begin as a mature craftsman, when you have the perspective to pick the right story and the skills to tell it. Was waiting this long an advantage for you? Each composer is different. Mozart started writing opera when he was very young, but in modern times—our generation especially—we have different backgrounds. During the Cultural Revolution, we lost our education. Even though my mother is a singer, I couldn't go to music school. I had no chance to study. But I have no regrets about writing my first opera in my 50s. Madame White Snake is a legend retold for today's audience. The language, the drama, the orchestration, each character's musical theme must all be contemporary. I think the more mature and secure you are in your craft, the better you can do this. Traditionally, opera needed much revision, but today's society doesn't allow for this. So when I started this project, I planned it very carefully. I've written many orchestral pieces, and a lot of vocal writing combined with chamber works and music for modern dance and theatre, all of which combine together in my first opera. I can see this almost as a summary of my entire career. This is a traditional Chinese story being told in English. Did you think of the music as a similar mix of cultures? Choosing "Chinese" or "Western" as a label is not important for me. What's important is the drama in the music, and here you do have to make decisions. My chamber writing is almost atonal— very different from my orchestral writing, which is more mild and traditional. In opera, some critics prefer the avant-garde, but the audience usually

doesn't. In the end, I compromised. The prologue is entirely atonal, mostly combining Peking opera recitation with Western atonal text settings. The result is a person speaking in English that actually sounds like Peking opera. This is not simply picking from Chinese or Western traditions, but melding these influences into a style that the story requires. If you write opera today, you only have one shot. You want audiences to remember the music, not spend so much time asking what it is. In this opera, we've illustrated a culture or milieu in some ways exotic to Western audiences. The meaning of "exotic" depends not just on the music itself but also the character and performance style, particularly regarding a given audience's background. Exoticism need not be limited to specific devices, such as quotations from Peking Opera. It can be contained through interaction between environments and individual characters. I made sure I composed entirely, even consistently, from elements identifiable to both Western and Eastern cultures, to sate either audience’s expectations. However, because Chinese audiences may have their own ideas about the White Snake legend, this opera may also be "exotic" for them. As told to Ken Smith

Although Cerise Lim Jacobs penned the text that would eventually become Zhou Long’s 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Madame White Snake, she still gives credit to her late husband Charles. “He was the opera fan,” she says, admitting that when she returned to writing after a 25-year legal career, an opera libretto was not the most obvious genre selection. Nor was it her initial choice, having originally conceived the piece as a song cycle for her husband’s 75th birthday. “He was past material things, and I wanted to give him something special,” she says. Searching for a suitable subject, she recalled the White Snake legend from her youth and quickly banged out an initial draft. “He saw me working and asked, ‘What’s this?’ I told him, ‘That’s your birthday present,’” she recalls, laughing. But for her husband, a Boston-based Jewish attorney who did not know from White Snakes, the story raised more questions than it answered. “Charles kept asking ‘Why would she say this?’, ‘Why would he do that?’ to the point that all I could do was flesh out the story in a way he would understand.” Which is more or less how Lim Jacobs's Madame White Snake became genuinely international, shedding its traditional skin and taking on modern trappings. “It was no longer about women being potential snake demons,” she says. “This woman fully understands the risks of venturing into a new world and is determined to fight for her dream.” The title character, in fact, rather began to resemble its author, a traditional Chinese girl from colonial Singapore who made her way westward—first to Australia, then England, and finally the United States—confronting, one might add, a patriarchal society disapproving of mixed marriages.

Her one-act libretto—concise, yet already operatic— also resonated with the composer Zhou Long, another operatic neophyte who’d relocated from Beijing to New York in the mid-1980s. “For an ancient legend being retold for today’s audiences, labels like ‘Chinese’ and ‘Western’ no longer apply,” Zhou says. “You have to use musical influences in a way that makes sense for the story.” As Lim Jacobs's libretto expanded into four acts, with an additional prologue and epilogue, its span proved large enough to contain the musical contrasts Zhou envisioned for his first opera. “My chamber works are almost atonal, while my orchestral writing is more mild and traditional,” he says. Likewise, his choral works are much less complex than his writing for solo voice. “Combining all these elements, Madame White Snake became almost a summary of my career at that time.” The musical synthesis of cultures begins right in the prologue, a singular blend of Peking opera-style recitation with Schoenberg-like Sprechstimme. Amidst otherwise Western orchestration, key Chinese instruments represent certain characters: White Snake is coloured by a bamboo flute; the scholar (her love interest) is represented by an erhu; her less sophisticated sister Green Snake is musically echoed by a xun. Particularly inspired is casting Green Snake as a countertenor—a tribute both to Western opera’s castrati heritage and falsetto cross-dressing on the traditional Chinese stage. If Madame White Snake’s four-act structure offered Zhou the fullness of a symphony, it presented Lim Jacobs's with the four seasons of a complete life. As the story developed, she found many similarities with the Western operatic canon.

“First of all, it's a transformation story, much like the Little Mermaid or Rusalka, where other creatures become human,” she says. “There’s also a tradition of stories, like Lohengrin, where lovers never reveal their true identity.” It also fits with opera’s catalogue of potions, which as Lim Jacobs's points out, can either be genuinely magical (cue Wagner’s Tristan chord) or merely a placebo (see Donizetti’s Elixir of Love). “In Madame White Snake, you don’t really know whether the truth potion she takes is real,” she explains. “When the scholar tells her, ‘I mixed these special herbs to help your childbirth’—which is not in the original myth, by the way—she can tell he’s lying, and both her trust and love die. With nothing to live for, her transforming back into a snake marks her spiritual death. “Or if you want to be literal, maybe the truth potion was real and she was forced to reveal herself against her will,” Lim Jacobs continues, a bit mischievously. “This kind of ambiguity can be very disconcerting to traditional Chinese audiences.” More threatening, though, is the very idea of White Snake as an emotionally vulnerable creature, she claims. “Having become human, she’s touched by human values, the ability to love and empathise,” Jacobs says. “She’s a powerful woman—okay, she used to be a demon—but a woman able to hold her own against an authoritarian patriarchy. Zhou Long is internationally recognised for creating a unique body of music that brings together the aesthetic concepts and musical elements of both the East and West. Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for his first opera, Madame White Snake, Zhou has also received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award and the 2012–2013 Elise Stoeger Prize from the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. He has been a twotime recipient of commissions from the Koussevitzky and Fromm Music Foundations, Meet the Composer radio programme, Chamber Music America, and the New York State Council on the Arts. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. In 2015, Zhou was nominated at the 58th Grammy Awards with Chen Yi. Born in 1953 in Beijing, Zhou enrolled in the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in 1977. Following graduation in 1983, he was appointed composer-inresidence with the China Broadcasting Symphony. He travelled to the United States in 1985 on a fellowship to attend Columbia University, where he studied with Chou Wen-chung, Mario Davidovsky and George Edwards, receiving a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1993. Zhou is currently Bonfils Distinguished Research Professor of Composition at the University of Missouri– Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance.

Cerise Lim Jacobs creates new American opera from her chequered past in multicultural Singapore and her sojourns around the world. Her original libretti are inspired by the myths that live in our imaginations, the excitement of current events and the people she encounters. With her husband, Charles, she conceived of and wrote the libretti for the Ouroboros Trilogy, comprising Naga, Gilgamesh and the 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning Madame White Snake. The Ouroboros Trilogy premiered in Boston in September 2016 and was hailed as “enchanted” (Boston Globe) and “bingeworthy” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). Lim Jacobs was born in colonial Singapore under British rule into a traditional Chinese family. She grew up absorbing the disparate influences of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western cultures and the world religions of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. During the turbulence following Singapore's independence and secession from Malaysia, her family immigrated to Australia. Lim Jacobs dropped out of school at the age of 19 to follow her heart, and began sojourns that took her from Melbourne to Oxford, East Lansing, Vancouver and Pittsburgh, until she finally settled in Boston, Massachusetts. Lim Jacobs graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and from Harvard Law School. She spent 20 years practicing law and also served for five years as a federal prosecutor at the US Attorney’s Office in Boston. Since retiring from law, she has returned to her creative voice in opera, music, art and food. She is a founder of White Snake Projects (formerly the Friends of Madame White Snake). Lim Jacobs was named a 2017 Mover & Shaper by Musical America—an award given to music professionals for driving the performing arts towards a future shaped by their vision—and was chosen as one of Boston’s 100 Most Influential People of Colour in 2018.

From the 2019/20 season onwards, Shui is the new Principal Guest Conductor of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.

As a guest conductor, Shui has worked in the United States with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic , Minnesota Orchestra and the San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit and Houston Symphony Orchestras, as well as appearing at festivals including Tanglewood and Aspen. In Europe, he has performed with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, hrSinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Radio-Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony, Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, Tampere Philharmonic and the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie. He was also Principal Guest Conductor of the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and maintains a regular relationship with the China Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Under Shui’s direction, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra has become a world-class ensemble and enjoys an exclusive recording contract with the BIS Records label. Shui has led the orchestra on several acclaimed tours to Germany, Switzerland, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, Spain and the USA. Born in Hangzhou, China, Shui studied composition at the Shanghai Conservatory and graduated from the Beijing Central Conservatory, where he studied conducting with Professors Xu Xin and Huang Feili. He made his professional conducting debut with the Central Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing in 1986.

Favourite productions include Uncle Vanya with Uppsala Stadsteater Sweden; Our Class with The National Theater of Lithuania; Eurydice with the Finish National Theatre (Helsinki); and Macbeth with the Volksbühne (Berlin). Other productions include The King Stag with The Shanghai Theatre Academy; You, We, Us, All with tours to Hamburg and Antwerp (2018 DORA Award Nomination for Outstanding Costume Design); and Orphée. In 2014, Pihlstrom received a Drama Desk nomination for Nutcracker Rouge; in 2012, he won the OPERA America Director/ Designer Competition. Pihlstrom received his MFA from Yale School of Drama.

Recently, he performed Charlie Soong in the American premiere of Huang Ruo’s Dr Sun Yat-sen with the Santa Fe Opera, Marco Polo with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Madame White Snake with Beijing Music Festival, Daland in Der fliegende Holländer with Opera Hong Kong and NCPA Beijing, Father Laurence in Romèo et Juliette with Opera Hong Kong, and Philip in Don Carlo with Hawaii Opera Theatre.

Yip has been a rehearsal pianist and coach for over 150 operas, operettas, and musical productions with companies including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Pacific (California), Los Angeles Opera and Opera Hong Kong, among others. Yip has worked with conductors and singers such as Georg Tintner, Steven Sloan, John DeMain, Bruno Aprea, Maria Ewing, Gino Quilico, Denyce Graves and Charlotte Church. She is now Principal Répétiteur at Opera Hong Kong.

Felix Yeung Chorus Master (The Hong Kong Arts Festival Chorus) 指揮楊欣諾屢獲殊榮。他現為香港聖公會教省及聖約翰座堂的音樂總監;也是香港最 出色的室內合唱團之一 Die Konzertisten 的音樂總監。楊欣諾為 2015 香港藝術發展局 藝術新秀獎(音樂)得主,並於 2 0 1 6 年獲頒英國皇家音樂學院副院士榮譽,以表揚 他的音樂貢獻。 Award-winning conductor Felix Yeung currently combines his office as Director of Music at St John’s Cathedral and Provincial Music Director of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. He is also Music Director of Die Konzertisten, one of Hong Kong’s foremost chamber choirs. Yeung was given the Award for Young Artist (Music) in 2015 by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 as an outstanding alumnus of the Academy.

Dominic Lam Chorus Master (Hong Kong Children’s Choir) 林浩恩為香港兒童合唱團舊生,畢業於美國西敏合唱學院碩士課程,主修合唱指揮, 現為香港浸會大學合唱團及香港聲蜚合唱學院指揮。他亦以指揮及伴奏身份隨香港兒 童合唱團到中國、葡萄牙、澳洲、愛沙尼亞及芬蘭等地作交流演出。 Dominic Lam is an alumnus of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir (HKCC) and obtained a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at Westminster Choir College, USA. He is currently the conductor of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Choir and SingFest Choral Academy (SFCA). Lam has toured to China, Portugal, Australia, Estonia and Finland with HKCC as conductor and accompanist in recent years.

Vision: To inspire through the finest music-making The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is recognised as Asia’s foremost classical orchestra. Presenting more than 150 concerts over a 44-week season, the HK Phil attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually. Jaap van Zweden, one of today’s most sought-after conductors, has been the orchestra’s music director since the 2012/13 concert season. Maestro van Zweden is also the 26th music director of the New York Philharmonic for the 2018/19 season. Yu Long has been principal guest conductor since the 2015/16 season. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Jaap van Zweden, the HK Phil has accomplished various ambitious initiatives including the four-year project to perform and record the complete Ring of the Nibelung (Richard Wagner). The orchestra has toured extensively—to Europe, throughout Mainland China on numerous occasions, and to Seoul, Osaka, Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney in 2017 as part of the HKSAR’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Thanks to a significant subsidy from the Hong Kong Government and long-term funding from principal patron Swire, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and other supporters, the HK Phil now boasts a full-time annual schedule of classical music concerts, pop concerts, extensive education and community programmes, and collaborations with, among others, Opera Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Originally called the Sino–British Orchestra, it was renamed the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 1957 and became fully professional in 1974. The HK Phil is a registered charitable organisation.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival Chorus is made up of members of Die Konzertisten and singers additionally engaged for this production. Die Konzertisten (DK) is recognised as one of Hong Kong’s foremost chamber choirs. Recent highlights include a collaboration with the period-instrument ensemble Arcangelo and its director Jonathan Cohen on Bach’s Mass in B minor. DK has appeared in previous Hong Kong Arts Festival programmes, including Estonian National Symphony Orchestra & Male Choir (2018), Debussy’s Pelleas et Melisande (2018), Bright Sheng's Dream of the Red Chamber (2017) and Gluck’s Iphigenia in Tauris with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch (2014).

The Hong Kong Children’s Choir (HKCC) was founded in 1969 as the first children’s choir in Hong Kong. HKCC is a registered non-profit-making charitable organization and has made tremendous contributions to children’s arts training in Hong Kong. It now has over 5,000 members and has grown into a diversified arts organization for children.
首隊兒童合唱團,並為政府註冊非牟利慈 善團體,多年來積極推動藝術培訓,為香 港音樂及文化界培育不少人才。現時香港 兒童合唱團擁有超過五千名團員,更發展 為一個多元兒童藝術團體。 合唱團每年均獲不同團體邀請到外地演 出,把愛與和平的訊息傳遍世界,足跡遍 佈多個國家。合唱團經常在香港的歷史性 時刻演出,包括 1 9 9 7 年香港政權交接儀 式、1 9 9 8 年香港國際機場開幕典禮,以 及近年慶祝香港回歸十五週年及二十週年 之文藝晚會及活動。
HKCC is invited to perform overseas each year, spreading the message of love and peace in different parts of the world. The choir has been well-received and appreciated in many countries. HKCC has taken part in many historical moments, including the Hong Kong Handover Ceremony in 1997, the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong International Airport in 1998, the Hong Kong Disneyland Grand Opening in 2005, and recently performances celebrating the 15th Anniversary as well as the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of HKSAR in 2012 and 2017.

Since 2006, Beth Morrison Projects (BMP) has been a tastemaker at the forefront of musical and theatrical innovation by supporting living composers and their collaborators during the creation of ground-breaking new works in opera, opera-theatre, and vocal-theatre. BMP encourages risk-taking in all its artists, resulting in provocative works that represent a dynamic and lasting legacy for a new American canon. Over the past five years alone, BMP has produced works in 43 venues in 22 cities around the world. BMP’s commitment to cutting edge musical expression has created “its own genre" (Opera News) of originality. In 2013, Beth Morrison Projects and HERE Arts Center co-founded the PROTOTYPE Festival, which showcases contemporary opera-theatre and music-theatre projects over ten days each January. The New Yorker recently wrote that the festival is “essential to the evolution of American Opera”, and the New York Times called the festival “Bracingly innovative…a point of reference”. The 2014 bi-coastal expansion to Los Angeles sprang from growing partnerships with institutions such as the LA Opera, the LA Phil, the Ford Theatres and RVCC. BMP is a National Sawdust Artist-in-Residence.

Founded by the iconoclasts Charles and Cerise Lim Jacobs, White Snake Projects’ mission has been carried on by Cerise following Charles' death through investing in American composers musically adept at telling myth-based stories living in our collective imaginations.
