I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Criatures 二人組合 Criatures 以格拉管及手風琴營造親切 氛圍，帶領聽眾走進一個簡單、自然和優美的 音樂世界。經改良的格拉管及手風琴樂聲建構 出一個幻想國度，當中一切都與民謠有關，而
Criatures 對音樂的熱情、謙遜及美學，讓這些原 始音樂得到重新詮釋。 音樂造就了一段雙重友誼，包括兩位音樂人之 間的友誼，以及他們與故鄉的情懷。從樂器所 奏出的旋律，令他們變成兩個「初生者」（加 泰隆尼亞語 Criatures 的意思）；兩人因溫柔和 單純性情而結合，並致力尋找一個屬於故鄉的 地中海室樂之聲。
2 0 1 0 年，兩位音樂人於加泰隆尼亞音樂學院結 識，一場音樂交流盛宴亦自此醞釀起來，加入 材料和開爐透火只是早晚的事。直至 2013 年， 這份音樂食譜在巴塞隆拿傳統技藝中心完成， 他們只需要再微調一下味道，加一點鹽、少許 胡椒，接下來靜止稍候便可。經過 2015 年多個 演出後，他們的音樂目標更為清晰：希望將故 鄉的民間音樂帶上更寬廣的舞台。 隨着 Criatures 的音樂風格愈趨成熟穩固，他們 參加了 2 0 1 6 年的地中海音樂大賽，並獲評判團 頒授一等獎。 獲獎後，二人馬不停蹄在國內的劇院、音樂廳、 酒吧等場地表演，爭取所有可以讓他們在民間 音樂界為人認識的表演機會。2017 年，他們分 別在加里西亞、加泰隆尼亞和法國巡迴演出， 並出席多個電台和電視的直播節目。

Gralla and diatonic button accordion. Intimitée. That's the word. The duo Criatures wants to accompany you to travel in the world of simplicity, naturalness and delicacy. The transformed sounds of the gralla and the diatonic accordion transport us into an imaginary world where everything revolves around folk music. The music that comes from the earth is re-interpreted with warmth, humility and beauty in each of Criatures’ musical propositions. Their music is the result of a double friendship: the one between the two musicians, and the one between the musicians and their territory. The melodies that flow from their instruments make the performers become two “criatures” (“little children” in Catalan) who, with the tenderness and innocence that unites them, strive to find a chamber Mediterranean sound characteristic of their land. Criatures is a duo that has been cooked little by little, precisely since the two musicians met each other in 2010 at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). It was only a matter of time before they added the ingredients and started the fire. Then, in 2013 at the Center Artesà Tradicionàrius, Barcelona, their recipe for sound was complete. From there, it was only necessary to fine-tune the taste—add a dash of salt and a pinch of pepper—and stop stirring. By 2015, after a few concerts, their musical project was on a very clear course: to bring their regional folk music to a rather roomy stage.
With their sound consolidated, in 2016 Criatures entered the Sounds of the Mediterranean contest, and the jury awarded them the First Prize. With this prize under their belts, the duo has continued giving concerts throughout the country, at theatres, concert halls, bars...any context to put their name out on the folk music scene. In 2017, they embarked on two tours in Galicia, Catalonia and France and appeared in live broadcasts on various radios and televisions programmes. Criatures constantly grow and reinvent themselves. Rooted in the memory of their origins, their ideas are in constant evolution, making pro-active but audacious music treated with delicacy and sensitivity.

Ivó Jordà
格拉管 Gralla 伊沃．荷達 1 9 8 6 年出生於菲格雷斯，並在當地學校研習《魔笛》 內的音樂。八歲時，他在加泰隆尼亞省傳統音樂學校修讀初階格拉 管課程；2001 年獲得「傳統器樂家」之名，並於 2006 年以「傳統 器樂大師」之名銜完成學業。2014 年，畢業於加泰隆尼亞音樂學院。 荷達主要演奏格拉管和蕭姆管，曾與不同樂團合作，例如 Grallers
d e Fig u ere s、M i n i s t rers d e Figueres 和 中 世 紀 音 樂 樂 隊 Beata E sc a ro la，也曾與尼奧．荷達於鋼琴和格拉管音樂會演出。近年， 他常與 Criatures、Els Groullers、La Cobleta de la Copeta、Grallers Els Quatrevents、Eròtic- Giust 及 Metralla 等樂隊一同表演，亦曾在西班 牙、安道爾、法國、葡萄牙、意大利、摩洛哥和蘇格蘭等地與不同 團體演出。 現時，他以結合樂理及其音樂作品的方法教授格拉管。
Ivó Jordà was born in 1986 in Figueres, where he began studying The Magic Flute music in school. At eight years old, he joined preliminary gralla courses at the Catalan provincial Traditional Music School. In 2001, he earned the title of "Traditional Instrumentalist", and in 2006, he finished his studies there with the title of "Master Traditional Instrumentalist". In 2014, he finished his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). Jordà plays the gralla and the tarota with ensembles like the Grallers de Figueres, Ministrers de Figueres and the medieval music group Beata Escarola. He also plays piano and gralla concerts with Nil Jordà. Nowadays, he performs with Criatures, Els Groullers, La Cobleta de la Copeta, Grallers Els Quatrevents, Eròtic-Giust and Metralla. He has performed with different groups around Spain, Andorra, France, Portugal, Italy, Morocco and Scotland. Currently, he combines theory and his work as a musician as a gralla music teacher.

Marçal Ramon was born in 1992 in Lliçà d'Amunt, Catalonia. He began his music studies at age six at the Escola Municipal de Música de la Garriga. From ages 6 to 20, he also played the violin. At age 15, he began to play the diatonic accordion. In 2014, he completed his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). Ramon is currently a musician and teacher of the diatonic button accordion. He also works as a composer and arranger, and he is the director of the Companyia Imaginària d'Arrel, a multidisciplinary company that performs traditional Catalan music and dance. In addition to Criatures, he also plays with groups such as Aires del Montseny. His objective is to experiment with traditional Catalan music by exporting it to the languages of 21st century music without losing the essence of its origins.

Carles Sanjosé is the lead singer and songwriter of Barcelona-based rock band Sanjosex. Carles Belda comes from a long ride in the Catalan folk music scene, always playing his diatonic accordion. Now, they have gotten together in this new project with a single goal: to give new life to songs that have been preserved only by oral transmission. The Càntut project was started by musicologist Albert Massip, who compiled more than a thousand field recordings of popular songs from the northern area of Catalonia, where the Pyrenees range meets the Mediterranean Sea. All these songs were sung by ancient men and women who had preserved them throughout the years. The next step in this project was to bring these songs to a new generation. So, Sanjosé and Belda dug into the Càntut files to choose 15 songs and cover them, always with full respect and an open mind: keeping the tradition but looking forward. To record these new tracks, they put together a band named Belda & Sanjosex, with guitar player and producer Jordi Casadesús (a long-time collaborator of Núria Graham) and violin player Coloma Bertran. The Càntut album was released in Spain in 2016 and was premiered live in Fira Mediterrània Festival in Manresa and Connexions Festival in Barcelona, with two soldout concerts. It was also performed in the new Càntut Festival in Cassà de la Selva, which has been built to spur on the file-digging. Belda & Sanjosex’s album was awarded with many prizes, including the Premi Teresa Rebull and Enderrock Prize for Best Catalan Folk Album of 2016.

Carles Sanjosé of Belda & Sanjosex speaks to the HKAF team about the band’s work on the Càntut album and the personal and cultural significance of the wider oral history project. Why did you first become interested in taking up the Càntut project? I’d heard about the Càntut project on Twitter before they contacted us [directly]. For me, there was a tight connection: those songs and that dialect were my own. That was the music of my grandparents, great grandparents and so forth. I’m from l’Empordà, a region within the boundaries of the project, and when I played one of these songs for my mother, she flew straight to her grandmother’s [folk] songs. In my case, there is a connection of cultural roots. Out of Albert Massip’s immense database of songs and their multiple versions, what drew you to the final songs you’ve selected to perform on your album and in your concerts? I listened to each song twice. It seems a big deal, but I did it while doing other activities that did not require too much attention. In the first round of selection, I let myself work with sensations from my contemporary point of view. In the second round, together with Carles Belda, we tried to draw a picture of the whole database. One song of this kind, one song of that kind. And finally we reached the final songs on the album. Do you have a favourite song from your album? When the Càntut project proposed recording the album to us, I took the opportunity to record my paternal grandmother. She has been a housewife all her life, but she knows a lot about popular Catalan culture in terms of poetry, short stories and songs. I recorded 16 songs with her, some of which were already in the Càntut database, but with La Dida (The Wet Nurse), she sung the song with a
different melody. It tells the story of a wet nurse whose baby dies accidentally in a fireplace—a very tragic story—but the way my grandmother sung it was very cold, very simple. It impressed me, and we decided to put it on the album while adapting it to our sound. Can you tell us a bit about your approach for re-interpreting the songs from the database? The songs are the core of the album. Once we decided which songs to play, Carles and I started to play the songs with classical guitar, diatonic accordion and voice. We needed to find a way to play our selection in a duet format. Once we had the core [solidified], Coloma Bertran added his violin, and finally Jordi Casadesús added his different instruments (bass, drums, keyboards, samplers, machines). All of us had a different relationship with traditional music. Bertran and Belda have been playing traditional music throughout their professional careers. Casadesús and I have not, but we have our own vision of it. The secret has been to respect the core of the songs and play them in a suitable, simple and joyful way. What do you hope that global audiences will take away from these very regionally grounded songs? Our first goal was [to reach] the regional inhabitants. The Càntut objective is to reintroduce the songs of regional oral tradition back into the region for a regional audience. At the same time, we know this is also the way to become global, and [our performance at] the Hong Kong Arts Festival is a good example of this. We hope the festival audience will enjoy this re-visitation of our regional music.

Camino Barcelona-based songwriter and flautist Yexza Lara presents her beautiful compositions inspired by Afro-Venezuelan music and the Canary Islands. These original songs on Camino were produced by Josema Martín and Sebastián Merlín (a Latin Grammy award-winner for his production of Jorge Drexler's album Bailar en la cueva). Live, Camino is a seductive performance brought by Lara and two of the most creative and influential musicians in the music scenes of Barcelona and the Canary Islands: flautist Pablo Selnik and guitarist Octavio Hernández.

Catalonia-based, Venezuelan singer and flautist Yexza Lara specialises in world music, progressive rock and avant-garde music. She has released three albums with some of Spain’s most creative musicians, such as Jordi Bonell, Félix Rossy and Pablo Selnik. Lara has studied music since the age of three. At the age of 15, she began studying flute at the Conservatorio Vicente Emilio Sojo and classical music composition at the Conservatorio de Música Simón Bolívar in Caracas. In 2007, she relocated to Spain, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz and Modern Music from the Conservatory Liceu in 2012. Lara currently resides between Barcelona and Tenerife, Canary Islands. Professionally, Lara has dedicated herself to musical collaborations with numerous bands, ranging stylistically from world music to jazz, progressive rock, pop, folk and avant-garde music. She has performed as a flautist with the Liceu Big Band and world music orchestra Cordes del Món. As a singer, she has worked with Yarikuté, Raíces, and emerging Afro-Peruvian band Calato. From 2014– 2016, she toured with her band across Bolivia, the Canary Islands, Andalucía and Galicia. In 2017, she introduced her avant-garde/pop project Black Flower with musicians from the Canary Islands and Barcelona. Lara now has three records to her name: Colores (2013), a repertoire of original songs inspired by traditional Brazilian and Argentinian music, produced and recorded with Colombian pianist Lina Lomanto; Encuentros (2014), an independent, jazz-leaning production produced with Bolivian drummer Miguel Crespo and Catalonian musicians Félix Rossy, Jordi Bonell and Jon Robles; and Camino (2017), produced with Latin Grammy awardwinner Sebastián Merlín and Spanish drummer Josema Martín.

Pablo Selnik breaks all the clichés related to the flute. Taking the instrument as an extension of his personality, he is able to extract from it the most unexpected sounds—from the freest jazz to the finest melodies. Born in Barcelona, he is one of the most risky and active musicians of the city's jazz and avant-garde music scenes. With more than 30 recorded albums, he has participated on projects of all stylistic ranges, from international black metal bands to television galas. He has taught at the National University of Asunción in Paraguay, the Liceu Conservatory and Taller de Músics in Spain. In 2012, his joint work with pianist Marco Mezquida Miscelánea n.2 was nominated for Best Record of the Year; one of its tracks was selected for the compilation album Jazz from Catalonia. In the same year, he was nominated Best Jazz Musician of the Year in Catalonia. Currently, he teaches and works in the studio at his own label, Antinomia Records. He leads stylistically diverse projects such as Machacachakras and Inhumankind and participates as a sideman in a range of recording projects, among which are Yexza Lara's album Camino and ensemble Black Flower.

Octavio Hernández’s relationship with music began at an early age through two different routes: Canary Island folklore and jazz, blues and rock. In 2001, he moved to Barcelona for music lessons with Catalan and Spanish musicians such as Jordi Bonell, Vicenç Solsona and Dani Pérez, and he began his studies at the Taller de Músics under Vicens Martí, Joan Monné, Martí Ventura, Cristina Canet and Publio Delgado. In 2005, he moved to New York City, where he took classes with Jonathan Kreisberg. In 2012, he finished his studies in modern music at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). He has participated in a wide range of musical projects: his own Now Quartet; hip-hop with IFSCrew; funk and Cuban music with Mel Semé; world music with Radio Malanga; and afrobeats with Alma Afrobeat Ensemble. He currently leads his own quartet, OH4t, and his Haziram Trio with Aldo Caviglia and Giampaolo Laurentaci. As a sideman, he collaborates with Kike Perdomo, Takeo Takahashi and Yexza Lara.

佐治．達洛查 1980 年出生於葡萄牙波圖。
Jorge da Rocha was born in 1980 in Oporto, Portugal.
2 0 0 5 年，達洛查懷着滿腔熱誠決定投身音樂， 前往巴塞隆拿深造。他入讀巴塞隆拿音樂工作 坊學習結他及低音大提琴，並於 2008 年至 2012 年間，在李世奧高等音樂學院完成爵士樂及現 代音樂高階課程，師從奧拉西奧．帕卡尼、大 衛．蒙格厄爾和諾諾．費南得茲。他抵達加泰 隆尼亞後，曾與不同音樂人同台演出，例如達 妮埃爾．佩雷斯、喬恩．羅布爾斯、結他手喬 迪．邦內、馬修．西蒙及意斯梅爾．杜埃尼亞 斯，亦與不同歌手和組合合作及錄製唱片，包 括馬賽克爵士三重奏、薩莎．德西恩納、安娜． 莫雷、「迷霧電藍」、雷納德．科洛等。此外， 達洛查亦亮相於加泰隆尼亞不少主要場地及音 樂節如巴塞隆拿國際爵士音樂節。 近年，達洛查專注研究以新方法彈奏低音大提 琴。2 0 1 6 年發行的《這些是我最喜愛的歌》是 他首張獨奏專輯，也是研究的其中一環。這張 專輯以別具個性的方法重新演繹歌曲，並多次 於西班牙、葡萄牙及德國演出。另一專輯《放 下．放開》於 2 0 1 7 年推出，所有曲目均為原創 作品，並於 2 0 1 8 年巡迴歐洲不同場地及音樂節 演出。

In 2005, da Rocha travelled to Barcelona with the intention of dedicating himself totally to music. He studied guitar and double bass at Taller de Músics and, between 2008 and 2012, completed the Advanced Course in Jazz and Modern Music at the Conservatori Superior de Liceu, where he studied with Horacio Fumero, David Mengual and Nono Fernández. Since his arrival in Catalonia, he has shared the stage with musicians such as Dani Pérez, Jon Robles, Jordi Bonell, Matthew L. Simon and Ismael Dueñas. Da Rocha collaborates and records with Mosaico Collective, Samantha de Siena, Anna Morley, Calima Electric Blue and Raynald Colom, among many others. He performs in the main clubs and festivals of Catalonia, including the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival. For some years, da Rocha has been dedicated to researching new ways to play the double bass. As part of that process, in 2016 he recorded his first solo work: These are a few of my favourite songs, an album of covers played in his special way. The album has been presented numerous times in Spain, Portugal and Germany. In 2017, he released To Drop and Let Go, composed entirely of original songs. During 2018, To Drop and Let Go was presented in several venues and festivals across Europe.

Ana Conceição 大提琴及主音 Cello and Vocals

Ana Conceição, born in Oporto, Portugal in 1991, began her musical studies at the age of 13 at the Paços de Brandão Music Academy, finishing her 12th year at the Professional Music School of Espinho. She graduated from the National Superior Orchestra Academy as an orchestra instrumentalist in the cello branch. After completing her degree, she began her studies in jazz, singing firstly with Mariana Vergueiro and later with Fátima Serro. She participated in a training course at the Casa da Música, Oporto and debuted in traditional Portuguese music with names like Carlos Baptista and Toques do Caramulo; she currently collaborates with Daniel Pereira Cristo. She is a co-founder of the musical projects Aquilo Que Você Quiserem and Lobo Faquir and is a cello teacher in Esmoriz, Mozelos, Santa Maria de Lamas and Oporto, Portugal. She collaborates regularly with several orchestras, including the Santa Maria da Feira Youth Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Orchestra. In 2018, she was the artist-in-residence at Ethno Portugal.
