Meinan Village Community Project, Guangdong, China

Introduction Architect makes, and it is in the heart of the Architect the desire of making that motivates him/her to generate creative ideas in respond to the ever-changing world. Through the practice of making, we sharpen our architectural intuition towards scale, aesthetic and materiality. The Meinan Construction Workshop is a 2-month research, design and construction project to provide 4 temporary pavilions for a youth hostel operating in Meinan Village, Guangdong. Each pavilion of approximately 3m x 3m was designed as a resting place for the villagers in the hot summer, an outdoor venue where the locals and visitors of the hostel would get together. The research stage of the project was conducted by few selected students to understand as much about bamboo construction as possible - material properties, manufacturing process, construction details, etc. Initial pavilion design and full scale construction mock up was done in the design stage to prepare for the 2-week construction workshop where 30 HKDI students, 2 tutors and 3 guest tutors from New York, London and Tokyo travelled to the village to construct the pavilions in August 2016. Students shared a high level of responsibility in this project - they participated in the ‘client meetings’ with the villagers/hostel operators; they developed the design of the pavilions and estimated the materials required; they detailed the construction and built the pavilions from start to finish; they visited most of the villagers at their doors to invite them to join the opening ceremony. Setting up live projects for students is one of the key teaching methodologies at the Hong Kong Design Institute. Real life building project allows students to fully utilize and integrate their knowledge in project management, design coordination, technical construction and communication. It also encourages students to truly think for the users and take ownership of their design. We must thank the Meinan villagers for their tremendous support and confidence. We hope that the Meinan Construction Workshop will be a continuous project that can contribute to improving the c o m munity infrastructure of the village.

The Envisaged Program: Meinan Rural Building Project May 2016

Notebook of the social worker Xiao Yang records the expenses of the workshop

This Bamboo Structure Exploration workshop was setup as part of a continuous program to integrate rural practice project into academic plan of year 2 architecture course of HKDI. This program was designed to combine practice and education, and also design and social work. Due to many practical reasons we have only completed till stage 3 of the original project plan. Fortunately we have managed to build 4 inspiring bamboo structures and that creative energy was carried back to HKDI Kwun Tong Campus from Meinan village when we made many careful bamboo details in the 2016 POB3 course. Below is the original project proposal programmed in May 2016, I hope this serve as a background information to the readers of this book. Kuo Jze Yi 2017.06.09

Project Introduction The rapid urbanization in China has been expanding to the rural regions, where the traditions, local culture and unique living environment are gradually disappearing. The rural lives are confronted by inadequate top-down public and private developments. The idea of Rural Building Project started when we were questioning the following: - How to preserve the traditional wisdom? - Are there other alternative development methods for the village? - What is our responsibility as a design institution in this situation? - What could our teaching staffs and students contribute and gain experience from working on such project? There are obvious opportunities and benefits for both the institution and the village to collaborate in finding a more conscientious bottom-up development that can improve the local live and innovatively preserve the traditions of local wisdom. And for the institution, besides marketing purpose, staffs and students will be able to develop projects in real situation rather than conventional speculative projects. Rural Building Project is being envisaged as a long-term research and practice project of the Architectural Design course of HKDI. Our ultimate goal is to set up a satellite workshop space in the village, the workshop will allow students to explore design ideas without limitations of space and it will simultaneously provide social and commercial opportunities for the village.

Framework construction 1, 2 & 3. firstly, we build the section. this is the first stage and also there is much problem that we faced like the bamboo is not straight and the joints is hard to make due to the roughness of bamboo. 4 & 5. 5 section completed!! We were going to complete the main structure. We measure the distance and connect 5 section. 6. the joints penetrate 4 bamboos. To complete this joint. the middle two bamboo must be narrow, otherwise we can’t drill through 4 bamboos. but the problem is that the small bamboo is too weak. it is easily squash. so we try to use the bamboo slab and filled the empty space by wood to increase the pressure inside.

Reflections

Passion of Rural Chan Wang Sik, Louis That is the first time I join the real architecture project, also it is an opportunity for me to recognize more about the rural china. Mei Nam village is one of the rural area between Guangzhou and Shao guan which is need financial support by the Chinese government. It was my first time to live in rural china near 2 weeks, it's made me feel exciting and wonderful. In the other hand, this workshop aims to build a 1 :1 scale architecture, its seem like a big challenge for the students who are no experience. As you know, a design from zero to hundred percent are a lot of process in it. In this workshop, a leader needs to coordinate the whole group mate. I think it was the biggest challenge on it. Every day, we need to wake up on 7 a.m. and had had our breakfast. After that, we started our work until 23 p.m. Its seem very harsh and miserable but if we focus on something which is interesting, it is not a bad thing for us. In the process, I know that most of the students (including me) did not know how to use the tools. We tried to learn how to use the tools and started to join the bamboo at the same time. No doubt, it was a lot of difficulties in the process. That is the important elements to challenge our teamwork. So far so good, we still finished the whole bamboo structure before the deadline. The workshop not only focuses on the bamboo structure; it also provides a chance for us to know more about rural china. We have joined some activities which are held by the social workers, such as made tofu and a fried rice cake with the villagers. I believed that is the good way to raise the communication with the villagers or our students. Also, we still have more time to communicate with the other year students. We can exchange our experiences on studying architecture. Moreover, we can talk about lots of gossips, its seem funny as well. In this two weeks, I can't enjoy the life of rural china at begin. Because of the environment was very disgusting and there were many insects in everywhere. However, thought a few days’ life, I started to learn how to immersed in the local culture of rural china. The national environment made me feel relax and release my pressure. When you live in a fast pace city, you will feel a lot of pressure which comes from your job, study, family or others. It is easy to let you get lost. I think the workshop is also a great opportunity to reboot yourself and find back your passion for design. I also miss the passion of the villagers. Most of the villagers were welcomed the strangers to get in their house, lets chatted and get more communication together. it is the warmest and touch thing that I meet.

One To One Bamboo Construction Wong Chin Wai, Eric The workshop was an exciting experience for me because I can challenge myself to engage in the bamboo design work and bamboo construction work as well as the new lifestyle in Meinan Village. After joining this workshop, I really know the value of the real project. there is a big difference when compare with our school work. the problem that we faced is out of my estimation. the material is not as perfect as our expectation. Some of the bamboo is too narrow and curvy. We have to do more steps to prevent the bamboo break. So we spend more time to produce joints. Of course we learned from challenge. Also, the size, the power and the weight of the real materials is out of our imagination. While we constructing the roof, we decided to finish the frame at the empty land and then move it to site. So that it requires a lot of manpower to deliver a huge roof. Finally, our roof requires at least 12 people to raise up. Moreover, real construction is about teamwork. For me, there are a big trouble in collaboration since most of the people do not experienced in the real construction include me. Therefore, we were face a lot of problem like not really clear about the design or they don't know how to operate the tools. I though everyone knows their position but the fact is that I was fault. Maybe I should clearly assign the work to the teammate base on their ability to increase efficiency. besides, the volunteers in the workshop includes year 1, year 2, year 3 and year out students. I meet some new friend from this workshop. In the school life, there is no interaction between juniors and seniors. Everyone just did their own job. So this workshop is a great opportunity to get interact with others year students. The other purpose of this workshop is to communicate with the villages. We hope to meet new friend in the village but we don't have enough time to hang out or play around. we were doing the construction work most of the time. It would be better if we have one more week. By the way, the villagers are really good. They know a lot skill that we don’t. For Example, they know how to produce oil by nuts, they produce Tofu, they cultivate bees to produce honey. So the villagers are all talented and nice.

168

Co-Working, Co-Living, Co-Sustaining Wong Chuk Ming Before the Guangdong Summer workshop, i do not understand the bamboo material and do not know how to use bamboo to make a product or structure. However, i know we will build the 1 to 1 ceiling structure. Hence, we need to find all about bamboo information such as how to make joint, how to make it curve and which tools is for bamboo. Mei Nan Cun is a traditional village where give me the first feeling is so fresh. It is because there is different with Hong Kong.Hong Kong is a busy and noise city, all is fast. However, the village is so quiet and fresh. In addition, the big different i think is people relationship. Mei Nan Cun has less people, but they are so close.Hong Kong has many people, but they are alienation. We can see the villager have their own skill in Mei Nan Cun.For example, they know how to make tofu, how to make a wood sculpture, how to use bamboo to create something etc‌.Apart from this, they can exchange to the other.i think this action can enhance their relationship. Therefore, i think we need to learn from them and try to exchange to the other people. In this workshop,i am one of the leader in the group.Hence,i need to discuss the design and think how to construction with my partner .This workshop is our first time to build the 1 to 1 architecture,so we do not know the construction steps and draw a construction drawings. Therefore, we need to search some construction drawing to be a reference and try to think what we need to draw. I think this is a good step for us to learn more about construction drawings. At the Mei Nan Cun,we faced some problems and need to solve it. The first problem is the bamboo quality is not good, but our design need a stable structure to support. We tried to use wire to fix it, but the wire is so weak. We found the screw and nut can fix it stable. The second problem is how to construction and the land quality, although we have the construction drawings, it is not enough information to build. Our design just have few bamboo to support all structure which looks like a inverted triangle.Hence, the foundation is very important. However, Mei Nan Cun land quality is not suitable to make a foundation. Therefore, considering the safe and construction problem, we think we can not make a inverted triangle. We think triangle form is more suitable for this site. In addition, we change the programme from pavilion to childens’ view tower. The third problem is how to divide work. We do not know each other, but we need to make the process fluently. Hence, each teammate need to try all the part and find which part is good for their own skill. I think this is the fast way to solve the problem and make the process smoothly.

This is a good chance for me to learn the leadership and construction skills. Bamboo is a interesting material which can make structure, fabric or product. I had learn something about bamboo through this workshop. Next, Mei Nan Cun is a nice place. The environment and villager are good. If there have next workshop, i will join it again!

Mei Nan Mei Nan Chan Tsz Ho, Shervan Mei Nan is a really special place, not because it has breath taking natural environment, not because it has pure and friendly neighbourhood, but because it is a place that we put our sweat, time and belief into something we love, we build. This workshop is to connect the neighbourhood to a public space through building a pavilion (a public space ). To us, this is a really valuable experience to build a 1:1 design. This workshop is leaded by a group of teachers (architect friends ) and students. Some ones who are interested(like me, a graduate)about this workshop were also welcomed to join. Mei Nan is a small village in Shao Guan, Guang Dong, China. 3 hours’ ride from Guang ZhouEast Station, 5 hours’ traveling from Hong Kong. It is a interesting experience about traveling from very city to very countryside. Building getting lower, views getting wider, breath getting deeper as well. Mei Nan is surrounded by high hills that the sun climbs and falls. They are far,but you never feel them so close to your body, never feel you are so part of this nature, never in Hong Kong. We have no enough time to explore every part of Mei Nan, we worked outside where we stay(a hostel renewed from an old mud-brick house by locals ), there was a large front yard, and there was our site, the place that we would like to gather the locals. There were two ways we leaving the hostel to uptown. One is surrounded by bamboos and river. Another one lead us to outside by passing a large pool fill with lotus, neighbours’ house. We usually walk along this road with dogs leading ahead and chickens came from no where. We were split into 4 groups, the whole pavilion is a combination of these 4 design. I am in group 1, the group that loves triangles modules ...... According to the local masters, we were challenging the most complex construction techniques of bamboos. As the matter of fact, we did struggle a lot while we building the modules. Not like the 1:10 model, real bamboo is not completely straight, which means it is almost impossible to make the construction as precise as the model. To make each bamboo in the right position and length, sometimes we need 3 people to finish 1 joint, 2 for holding the bamboos, 1 for prodding a hole that letting a screw can go through 3 bamboos (sometimes 4) at the same time. To make a 4-bamboo-join, those 2,inside should thin enough to follow the screws’ length limitation. The challenge is, the bamboo in that thin will easily break under that pressure, then the joint will be fail. We consulted advice from the local experienced masters and put solid wood into each bamboo before prodding, to fill every space within bamboo, to limit the space that bamboo can transform, to make each bamboo can take more compression. Our group is the only design tend to provide a rain-resistant space. As the matter of fact, we also the first and only ones to “test” the roof under a unexpected heavy rain. That was a day after days with skin burning sun shine, we were trying to install the 3 matter long transparent plastic corrugated sheets. Less than a second, it started to rain, heavier than ever we seen in Mei Nan. Everyone started to rush, but one group, they are not running, instead, each one found a small corner to hide. Those corners were fresh built by themselves. Actually those were just pieces of that roof sheets. One man in black suddenly hold a waterproof camera and tried to record this unique memorial touching moment! That was me. I got wet, from head to socks.

We all got wed. It was cold at the beginning, then it turned into excitement of getting so close to a roof surface then ever, right in front of my face, watching everything got blurry outside, watching water flowing so close, rain dropped on the surface and transformed into different shapes. That moment, it so poetic. Architecture has its limitations in gathering a neighbourhood, and to getting into a neighbourhood, we were not playing an architect, we were playing a dancer! The most happy time to be with the locals, must be dancing with the locals in the square of primary school at night. We don't know each other, but we just go there, line up behind. We don't even know those songs, but everyone just started dancing, trying to catch up the moves. Of cause we failed... So sweaty but we laughed so true from our heart when we finished every song. At least. I believe so. No matter the locals or us. It all happens at the school when night comes. The school transforms into a dancing place, a villagers gathering square, a public space. Architecture is supposed to provide possibilities outside it was supposed to build for.Hope them will dance under the pavilion we built... Then we were succeeded. Talking about Mei Nan, it is also about friendship. I believe we were the group filled with fun the most. We always joked on each other when working, sometimes selfies. We worked late in night and went to a local’s home to have cup noodles and watched TV together (with the local’s families ). Lots of unforgettable moments. Thanks to them, this workshop was full of laughter to me.If someone ask me if I will come back to Mei Nan again next year to build a permanent structure, I would say ....Yes we will, we promised.

Time and Patience Li Chun Yin, Tom

In last year, I am glad to have a chance to join a workshop in Meinan village, at mainland. This workshop is doing the bamboo structure for the resident of the Meinan village to have a big open space to gathering and sharing the local culture, such as the cooking culture but it is a temporary structure. For the schedule of the work, first need to research the background of the Meinan village and the detail of bamboo joint how can be more durable and stable. After that, it was the design part. It divide four group to four structures in the same site and it will group together at the final stage. When each group was designed the first idea we need to have a site visit to rethink the idea is work or not. Then, after the site visit we had a month to rethink and redesign to improve the idea, such as the context and the joint part. So that, before to build the real one to one structure, four groups were designed twenty ideas for the backup design and each group choose one to develop and build it. For the construction date, we had two week to build and have a two day workshop for provide some new detail joints. Just 9 days of the construction, there were more than twenty students haven’t one to one construction experience, we only had 400 original bamboo, these enough for the structures. Although there are many details of the problem, but in such a short period of time to find the problems to solve it and complete the task. So that, from this workshop we can earn how to find and solve the problems in the short period. I not know how long of these structures can stand but it is a good experience for me, cause I learnt the team work and patient in this workshop.

Unexpected Trial Cho Chi Shing

Last year summer holiday, i was join a workshop which organized by HKDI’s tutors, the day started from 13-25 in august. The purpose of the workshop is to build an open kitchen in Meinan villager by using bamboo material and we make it to be a huge structure. In total we have 27 students and 5 “teachers” including tutors and architects stay in the rural village. It is a great opportunity to learn each other, especially the local master was teach us a lot about construction detail and possibility were discovered by their knowledge. It is an experiential changes to work with architects and discuss our mind. In the same time, we really feel honor to participate in this workshop because our institute provided an opportunity to make our dream come true! It is excited that we can handmake the structure to be a pavilion. Honestly, i am quite worry the trip before i go. I haven’t go to a rural village before. I was afraid i can not adapt the environment. I was worry because i haven’t leave my hometown for half month, i will miss them and homesick. Also i have no idea how to build a big structure… Those predictions bin my mind and make me stay in Hong Kong rather to join this workshop.

The key to Success Wong Tsz Him In Meinan Workshop, I learned many skills that I never know about bamboo, and I was the first time to go to Guangzhou, it is a really amazing feeling. There is a new world and peace in my first feel, I thought that if we made a 1 to 1 scale structure, we will proud of that. When I arrived there, I just thought that so beautiful and quiet place I have ever seen. There is a place just like village, I lived in Hong Kong many years, and Hong Kong is just a concrete city, the feeling is just like you see something you did not see before. Also, we need to divide into groups at first night, I was very worried about how many people will choose our group? Between the parts of choosing, it is just as I thought, there are two to three people chose our group only. Our project is making a boat to be a shelter to block the light, so it's called Boat Shelter. The name can make a feeling to people just think that is modernism, but the system of the design is symmetric and geometry, some people think our project is boring. However, finally Mr. Kuo grouped 4 people to our group, I am really touched at that moment. As I asked them how they think about our group's project, and they answered me that your group's project might be boring, but it is the most clear to explain what our target is and what we are going to do. After this, I work kindly with my groupmates. Although one of our groupmate need to leave first cause of some urgent family problem, we still work hard to keep working on the structure. We failed many times on the structure base but we still try again and again until it work. In our group’s communication, if someone is tired, we will just let him take a break, and we keep working. This can help us to get enough rest and power to work out. Finally, I am really thank you for my groupmates and it is my pleasure to group with them, they will not doubt at us and they think that we have some mistake on the design or on the structure, they will talk to us immediately, and they help us so much. I appreciate that. I thought I can improve my skill at bamboo and try more material related to architectural design, such as timber, glass. Otherwise, I was enjoy this Meinan Workshop, Mr. Kuo gave a great experience to me, though this workshop, I learned many things, such as teamwork, communication, knowledge of bamboo structure. And I know how to make structure by bamboo already, I got confident to test more different materials after this workshop. Finally, I really thank you for Mr. Kuo as I learned many knowledge and get more experience in my life, I think that I am smarter now.

Bamboo Feeling Chan Ka Chun, Ryan Before I join this summer workshop which not attract me to join it. After I hear this workshop of goal improve local villagers of living and I think this workshop very significant. So I decide to joint this workshop. However, I don’t understand how to apply bamboo in architecture and this is my first time to build a 1 to 1 pavilion in real and use bamboo to apply in design. Also, I try most challenge in my first time. I take charge of group leader in workshop so I have responsibility to ensure group mate of work progress. in addition, there are different part is very difficult to me such as I need to draw construction drawing to make group mate to understand how to build the design through drawing. In addition, this is my first time to make construction drawing which need to understand each step and detail clearly. However, I don’t have any experience in these drawing so the drawing is not clear to show whole construction process. Due to the construction drawing is not clear so we just follow 3d software and model to construct the structure in the construction stage. In fact, if I spend more time to understand the design and reference. I may output a clear construction drawing to give group mate to follow it. Moreover, there are a lot of difficult issues in the construction stage such as bamboo of thickness not in my expectation in construction stage. Although it influenced construction process we still need to fix these issues to finish the structure. However, we deiced to change some part of design to solve this problem. In addition, the major structure cannot be stable to stand on ground so we need to add more support to make it stable. I experience relationship between architecture and human in the whole workshop. We need to understand local villagers of life and culture to apply in my design. We visit different villagers to understand more their living in village and work.

Making, Learning and Sweating Law Tsz Kin, Kinson As a first-year architecture student, we still keep our architecture experience in scale models and drawings, we never have a chance to ‘’build’’ our own architecture, you never know how hard and complex to construct a real space, how is the feeling when you look at the space you built. We are giving about two weeks to construct a 1 To 1 Bamboo Pavilion and we are totally knowing nothing about how to build a pavilion, what a good start! Fortunately, there is some local bamboo master to teach us how to communicate with the bamboo and our 2 weeks non-stop journey is started. I still remember the awkward moment when getting our bamboo, no one knows how to properly cut it to our construction size, we just cut it with brute force and it is very very hard! After the bamboo master teach we knew some the behavior of bamboo, we need to put the cutting the force right in the middle of the bamboo and split it into two part, also, they also teach us how to use fire to heat up the bamboo so that we can blending the bamboo to shape our space. It is very useful because our design has some triangle shape, with this skills, we can produce a lot of it. In the drawing you can draw all your imagination inside your drawing but when you facing the real material, you need to keep thinking about ‘’is it working?’’ because all of our idea in drawing is romanticized, when we facing the real materials, we need to think about the most important thing structure, sometime you think this is going to work but when you test it, the whole roof fall down, and the second skills we learn for the master is how to use iron wire to reinforce the joint of our design and it work. This is a really good experience to me because I learn that If your really want your design to happen, you need to think about the reality first otherwise it is not going work, but sometimes when you put your mind into the materials you actually can develop a much more detail design and it is also one of the most important things become a successful architect, the materiality is very important. Last but not least, I want to thank you Kuo to provide this amazing workshops, although we are working very slow and knowing nothing about bamboo at that time, you and Mikolaj Still give us the amazing Tutorial, we will never forget how many sweat and effort we are putting in Meinan.

The First Time Around Meinan Village Tin Tsoi Ling, Teresa It was a long time ago, actually not that long, just last summer. I participated in a two weeks village workshop which is organized by our school tutors and a few co-workers from foreign architects and China social workers. It makes me shocked, Meinan is a developing village that already have some facilities providing for visitors, like hostel which is far beyond the last village workshop I have been. In this trip, I gained some life experience and to build one to one physical bamboo structure by my own hand with teamwork. Yet, the design was not design by myself, the process was great fun and terrific that I never feel before. For me, the atmosphere of the hostel was liked a gathering place and resting place, also like a working place. It is impressive that we work directly right after we brush our tooth and cleaning up, then rest after we finished our work of the day. Since our hostel was next to our working place, I could feel there is a bonding between each group, the group mates and tutors. The tough connection raise the spirits of us to work harder and harder. Moreover, apart from the daily working hour, I do appreciate the time we are resting with group mates. I truly believe my group was the happiest group in the group of three. We work hard and play hard at the same time, this attitude was pretty good as a project team. It is because we could stress out our pressure in any time, improving our bonding, also understand each other in a short period of time. On the other hand, I think working with year two and three students as a graduates could feel the fresh perspective from them too. I used to despise dirty stuff, however, after considering the effect of the life experience and building a one to one pavilion my perception has shifted. Once seemed obvious that it is the first time I have try to build a one to one bamboo structure make me understand the tenser of a fresh bamboo, how long could it last for, the difference from other building material, the texture of bamboo do not like timber that could distort without using glue and tools. Besides, timer do need those stuff to make the distortion. Also, I learn from the bamboo master bamboo could distort when they heated by fire or steam by water. The last two days, we worked through the night and still has not finished our pavilion but we did not give up so easily, finally we make it on the last day. These reminds me every singe steps are so important to a building. Bamboo are the cheaper and long lasting building materials. Well, I would say I feel extremely successful when I saw our elegant pavilion stand on surface and it is the only one that could be water proof and transparency. And we offered a shelter and gathering space for the villagers, wish they like it. I am glad that I had a group of wonderful teammates in this workshop.

Lam Chor Mei, CM

Cheung So Shing, Aaron

Wong Hong Kei, Tommy

Chong Man Po, Michael

Yip Ka Chun, Edmund

Tam Kwan Lam, Gundam

Chan Ngai Tung
