MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SHOOL
Dear HKIS Community,
I am very excited to share this edition of the Impact Report. It highlights the important work made possible by the growing culture of philanthropy at HKIS during the 2023-2024 school year.
Beyond the impressive lists of donors that show giving from all parts of the HKIS community, the report has short articles that dive deeper into the impact of those gifts. You will have a glimpse back at the hugely successful and fun community-wide Spring Celebration, feel the excitement around a partnership with sportswear giant Li-Ning, and learn about new ways to give through the establishment of a 501c3 non-profit organization. You will also read exciting updates from your beloved community groups.
I hope that through sharing this report, it’s clear that your giving makes a lasting impact on HKIS.
Thank you for your continued support of our school and community,
Sincerely,
Ronald A. Roukema, Ed.D. Interim Head of School

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Welcome Lamma House!
This year, HKIS introduced a new dyad in the Middle School, a testament to the growing interest in our quality program. The division welcomed 34 new middle school students and 13 faculty members, expanding our community to 12 sections per grade in Grades 6 through 8.
To support this, a portion of the Annual Fund enabled our wonderful Facilities Management Team to reconfigure teaching spaces, resulting in an additional dyad room on the 6th floor and two World Language Classrooms on the 4th floor. The support also helped move Religious Education classes next to the Student Services Center.

Student choice in High School extends to a redesigned cafeteria. New serving stations and additional payment kiosks were built to increase efficiency during an essential part of the school day.

Less Noise, Less Headache 5
Can you imagine the sound of 200 Lower Primary students eating lunch at the same time? Thanks to a special Annual Fund gift from a Lower Primary family, the LP cafeteria added acoustic paneling and sound treatments to reduce noise during busy lunch times.

A Facelift for the Field
In one of the largest scale improvement projects, the field at the heart of the Tai Tam campus was completely resurfaced, thanks in no small part to your support last year!
“The improved HKIS artificial field has positively impacted the MS & HS sports program. The new natural infill decreases heat on the playing surface and the addition of an updated irrigation system will increase longevity and overall safety. A cooler, softer field means a safer, more enjoyable place to play!”

Where Great Students Become Great People
by Timothy Loo
Thinking Outside the Ball
On May 3, 2024, nearly 600 guests gathered in the Ocean Park Marriott Ballroom for the first ever HKIS Spring Celebration. This new community event featured heartwarming stories that highlighted how students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni embody the values of the HKIS mission. Attendees celebrated what it means to be a leading place of learning that inspires a socially engaged community of collaborative, creative, and resilient learners.
A key motivator behind introducing the Spring Celebration was reframing the idea of a gala. We used the theme, “Where Great Students Become Great People,” to guide our planning and decision-making for the evening. This meant student performances took center stage and the program spotlighted remarkable individuals who make HKIS special.
Guests enjoyed significant changes to the previous format to amplify the impact HKIS has on students. Sponsors supported tables to ensure a high ratio of faculty and staff could attend for free. Instead of featuring a keynote speaker, the main program showcased a curation of student performances. Attendees were positively charmed by married alumni couple Kathryn (Katie) Shull ‘09 and Jonathan Chu ‘09 as MCs. This dynamic duo perfectly embodied the evening’s theme and HKIS’s mission to cultivate service-minded global citizens.

The next phase of the HKIS Master Facilities Plan is the new Performance Hall on the Tai Tam campus to showcase the performing arts program.
The cutting-edge space will provide seating for over 900 guests, making it the largest performance venue on the south side of Hong Kong Island. Key features will include a fully automatic movable flooring system, soundscape audio technology, and movable acoustics shells & LED walls. Below the hall there will be a lighting studio, green room, and classrooms. Additionally, the facility will feature a flexible orchestra pit, storage space for a grand piano, and an LED wall cueing system that will ensure synchronization for cast and crew. The project has engaged ARUP as a specialist for theater and acoustic services.
Construction on this facility will begin following the opening of the Student Activity Center in the 2024-2025 school year. The project received government department approval on the building plans. The budget was approved by the HKIS Board of Managers and a tender for construction is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The entire build is anticipated to take two years to complete.
The new Performance Hall replaces the current High School gym and swimming pool.

The Legacy of Endowed Giving
Endowed gifts provide a critical revenue source to enable teaching and learning. They achieve this through carefully and conservatively investing gifts of great magnitude to produce an annual return. This annual return is used to supplement tuition revenue and Annual Giving each year. As these invested gifts grow in value, the impact of endowed gifts grows as well.
Endowed Giving protects important parts of the HKIS educational experience including:
• Service Learning
• Religion and Spirituality Education
• Athletics and After-school Activities
• Art
Endowed Giving helps HKIS build a sustainable financial foundation, allowing the school to plan for the future and fulfill the mission effectively.

Support the Legacy of HKIS from the US
by Heath Hignight
New nonprofit will strengthen connections for US-based alumni, former faculty and staff members
One important aspect of the HKIS mission is the commitment to an “American-style education”. It’s something that creates a common bond between alumni from the 1970s and students who are now half a century younger, reflecting a legacy that transcends generations.
Over the decades, many HKIS graduates attend top universities in the United States. Now, generations of alumni have established their lives and families in the US, strengthening this bond to the school.
In recent years, alumni and former educators in the US expressed a desire for a more efficient way to support HKIS back in Hong Kong. In late 2023, the school’s Board of Managers collaborated with former parents and board members to establish Friends of HKIS.
This organization can now accept gifts in US dollars from American financial institutions, using the same processes as any other US-based nonprofit. This eliminates concerns about currency conversion and international transfers, allowing donors to contribute directly to Friends of HKIS, which then forwards the gifts to the school.
Like any legal nonprofit in the US, Friends of HKIS has a Board of Directors that provides strategic oversight.
Friends of HKIS is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Its purpose is to provide HKIS alumni, former board members, and past faculty and staff members with a taxefficient means of supporting the school.
The inaugural board is comprised of experienced individuals passionate about HKIS, like Abigail DeLessio, former Chair of the Board of Managers, and Richard Mueller, former Chair, former Head of School, and retired US General Consul to Hong Kong.
Friends of HKIS simplifies the process for alumni, former parents, and former faculty to make online donations that benefit the students and teachers at HKIS.
Going forward, US-based alumni and former teachers, staff and board members can make their gifts quickly through Friends of HKIS!
Smart Gifts
A unique feature of Friends of HKIS is the opportunity to make "smart gifts", including donations of stock, contributions from DonorAdvised Funds (DAFs), or even cryptocurrency. These taxefficient gifts not only support the distinctive educational experience at HKIS but also offer substantial tax benefits for US taxpayers.
With the introduction of smart gifts, it’s now easier to support the legacy of

HKIS x Li-Ning Sportswear Partnership

The HKIS Boys Basketball team poses for a picture at the airport as they travel to compete in the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC). They stand shoulder-to-shoulder in matching travel kits, forming a formidable yet comfortablelooking sight. Despite the pressure of an upcoming tournament, they look confident, happy and professional.
This air of confidence is partly due to their new travel kits. The athletes wear a soft, hooded sweatshirt with large navy blue “HKIS” letters boldly displayed across the chest. The kit is rounded out by jogger pants crafted from the same highquality material as the sweatshirt. These kits were made possible through a generous sponsorship by Li-Ning, a global sportswear company. In Phase 1 of the partnership with LiNing, they provided travel kits for HS students participating in APAC and a duffel bag for all MS and HS athletes.
HKIS Activities & Athletics Director Todd Parham says, “it was an honor for our office to work with the design team at Li-Ning over the past 10 months to create some truly amazing sports uniform designs. The quality and craftsmanship of these original designs is second to none and will certainly have HKIS standing out in a crowd! Thank you Kiki, Marcus, and Johnny for all the hard work and long hours you have put into this project, I’m excited for the partnership between HKIS and Li-Ning.”

A WOMAN OF IMPACT
by Carrie Chen
It’s not often you find a job with people you want to work with, gleefully. Mekala (Mek) Weerakoon shares how she has been hugely impacted professionally and personally over her 15 years of service at HKIS.
Mek shares that she is surrounded by colleagues who love being teachers and who love learning more about the profession. They are open-minded about change and willing to implement it because of what research says or what they see at HKIS and around the world.
“I’m learning from other people on a daily basis.”
As a parent, Mek chose HKIS because it was where she wanted her kids to be. She loved the ethos of the school and felt a peace of mind having her kids taught by such dedicated and caring teachers. As a Christian, she felt her kids were impacted by being brought up in a school where spiritual life is respected. Because they learn about all religions, kids can relate to one another and come across as being accepting and knowledgeable about humanity. She acknowledges her kids will continue to journey spiritually and remarks, “it's a beautiful thing that our school does”.
Mek is moving back to her homeland Sri Lanka after the 2024-25 school year. She says she will leave with decades of friendship with like-minded people who love the school because of what it stands for.
Her love for the community means that she gives back in so many ways every day, including being a soapbox for women going through menopause.
Listen to “Mek, Rowdy Kids, and Menopause” to get great advice from Mek. On this podcast, you’ll get why she is a friend to so many in the HKIS community and how she creates belonging in the classroom. She is also one of the longest recurring faculty donors of the HKIS Annual Fund, which is only one aspect of the many ways she impacts the school.
As she reflects on the decision to leave HKIS next year, she credits her colleagues, her coaches, and her principals for helping her love her profession. It’s a place where she can keep giving because she feels like she's fulfilled each day.
“I’ve had an amazing career here as a teacher, and I'm really hoping that I will be able to take that impact with me when I go to Sri Lanka to schools that need help.”

A GROWING NETWORK
by Hillary Sandeen
During the 2023-24 school year, alumni returned to campus in large numbers to celebrate milestone reunions, participate in community and alumni events, and enjoy campus tours. It was wonderful to connect with so many alumni and their families while sharing exciting news and updates from HKIS.
“HKIS has helped me form my support network. I am forever grateful for the people I met at HKIS, the school truly nurtured all of us into welcoming, caring, and kind individuals.”
from 2023 Alumni Survey
In January, HKIS hit the road to host overseas reunions, reconnecting with alumni in New York City, Boston, and, for the first time, London! Alumni were excited about the opportunity to reconnect with classmates and meet fellow graduates in their respective cities. These gatherings were a great success and enabled the Advancement Office to share important updates in person with nearly 200 alumni. One of the hottest updates was the launch of the alumni portal, HKISAlumni.org! Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming reunions on the West and East coasts, as well as in London in 2025. 155 Alumni Parent Families

The New Alumni Portal
HKISAlumni.org was launched in October 2023 and enables our global alumni community to connect for professional and social engagement purposes. Alumni can find mentors, seek career advice and opportunities, and reconnect with former classmates and teachers via the searchable directory. The aim of HKISAlumni.org is to become the main resource for everything HKIS Alumni.

Hong Kong Chapter
The 2023-2024 cycle marked a comeback after the pandemic, with the Hong Kong ChapterAlumni Association launching new initiatives to engage with the broader alumni community.
We hosted the first ever HKIS Alumni Prom, welcoming 160+ alums and former and current faculty back to the high school gym to reconnect and take a trip down memory lane. Representatives spanning the Classes of ‘95 to ‘14 showed up in prom-ready attire. There was an evening of drinks, dancing, dinner in the cafeteria (yes, served on cafeteria trays!), performances from the Hong Kong Dancers, and music from alumni DJs TJ Cheng ‘07 and Kevin Hui ‘03.
We also organized the first ever Alumni Golf Tournament. Bringing back the old (friendly) rivalry with Chinese International School, a team of HKIS alums took to the golf course in May, winning the tournament and HK$30,000 in prize money! We are excited to have presented the winnings to the school to support the HKIS’ Black Kite Scholarship Program, a donor-supported scholarship fund.
We continued to hold gatherings where possible. Our evergreen Alumni Happy Hour and Weekend Family Hike were opportunities for alums to network and just have fun!
