CENTRAL ADMIRALTY & MID-LEVELS
優
Exceptional
CENTRAL, ADMIRALTY & MID-LEVELS Central, Admiralty and Mid-Levels may be some of the most frequented areas of Hong Kong, but there are still hidden gems to be found in these vibrant neighborhoods. Navigate the crowds and uncover some of the best food, shopping and salons in the city, right in the middle of it all.
Fine-dine Cantonese at Mott 32
Dine Ho Lee Fook HLF is a cheeky, modern take on Chinese cuisine, courtesy of Aussie chef Jowett Yu (of Ms. G’s and Mr. Wong in Sydney). The venue consists of a ground floor open kitchen decked out in mahjong tiles, and a dark and funky basement dining room. Signature dishes not to be missed include Yunnan-style steak tartare, sang choy bao and the homemade “Mom’s” dumplings. LG-G/F, 1 Elgin St., Central, 2810-0860.
Mott 32 Mott 32 is restaurant group Maximal Concepts’ first foray into Chinese cuisine, and like its other restaurants, it’s dark, dramatic and reeks of exclusivity— you’ll probably know from that alone whether you’ll love it or hate it. The massive 7,500-square-foot venue is cleverly laid out, with rooms and private sections hidden on the fringes of a main circular dining area, and popular dishes such as Peking duck and Iberico pork char siu reeling in the regulars.
First Floor by Lifestyle Federation Running low on places to take clients or first dates? Hong Kong’s newest upscale restaurant comes from multimedia group Lifestyle Federation, who’ve taken their experience of creating highend “edutainment” F&B experiences to open the city’s latest private dining club. Covering 4,000 square feet, the First Floor is an elegant space, serving up nouvelle cuisine from chef Kit Cheung, previously of Caprice and Spoon by Alain Ducasse. They also specialize in experiential events, from food demos to whisky and cheese tastings. 1/F, 13 Duddell St., Central, 2840-0032.
Wine 001
B/F, Standard Chartered Building, 4-4A Des Voeux
001 is a notoriously hard-to-find speakeasy, situated behind an unmarked black door between Graham Street and Queen’s Road Central. Despite a secret location, the very small bar has made a name for itself through word of mouth thanks to its excellent Earl Grey martinis— and its grilled cheese sandwiches.
Rd.,Central, 2885-8688.
Shop 1, L/F, Welley Building, 97 Wellington St., near Graham St., Central, 2810-6969.
6 MYCONCIERGE 2015
Fu Lu Shou Meaning “happiness, prosperity and longevity,” this hidden rooftop venue offers up cool surrounds and cooler concoctions. Not only do the innovative cocktails have a strong local flavor, but you’ll also find western-style Chinatown favorites on the menu. A world away from some of the more formal rooftop establishments around town, this is a casual place to kick back and enjoy a few creative drinks. You’ll have to call ahead for the door code. 7/F, 31 Hollywood Rd., Central, 2336-8812.
The Blck Brd This chilled out spot has an official ‘no loud music’ policy, making it the perfect place for a few low-key drinks with friends. Located on the 6th floor, The Blck Brd is cut off from the gaggles of people on the street but on the outdoor terrace is a serene place to watch the world go by. Sample the supreme selection of whiskey and bourbon as well as barrel-aged old-fashioneds and negronis. 6/F, 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2545-8555.
CENTRAL, ADMIRALTY & MID-LEVELS
Classic meets modern at Ho Lee Fook
Party Cé La Vi After more than a year of hype, glamorous Singaporean dining and nightlife destination Cé La Vi (formerly Ku Dé Ta, nestled at the top of Marina Bay Sands) has opened its Hong Kong flagship on the top of the shiny new California Tower, bringing hedonism and class (if those ever actually go together) back to Lan Kwai Fong.
Night Market at PMQ, Central
24-26/F, California Tower, 32 D’Aguilar St., Central, 3700-2300.
Baby Buddha For a hip place to hang out in Lan Kwai Fong away from the clubbing crowd, head to Baby Buddha at the end of Wo On Lane. A quieter respite from the pumping LKF music and endless crowds, Baby B lets you enjoy alfresco drinks, from cocktails to reasonably-priced wines by the glass or by the bottle. 18 Wo On Lane, Central, 2167-7244.
Fly Club Fly features a “front porch”—a semialfresco area with swing chairs and a gold disco ball—and the “back room,” where the night comes to life with DJs spinning into the early hours, a floor-to-ceiling LED wall and a thumping system to ensure you leave the club properly deafened. On good nights, Fly is very very good.
Shop PMQ The site where PMQ sits now, just at the junction of Hollywood Road and Aberdeen Street, used to be the Police Married Quarters for junior officers. The historical site has since gone through a major revitalization project, finally opening in the summer of 2014. It’s now a top creative landmark in Hong Kong: a bustling shopping and creative complex full of independent artists’ workshops and quirky design stores. PMQ also regularly hosts large outdoor events supporting similar ventures, including pop-up weekend and night markets. 35 Aberdeen St., Central, 2870-2335.
WOAW One of Hong Kong’s hippest areas, Gough Street is the perfect location for this trendy lifestyle concept store, which stands for “World of Amazing Wonders.” The store is a haven for all things interesting, from Karen Walker sunnies to funky shoes to totally unique travel bags. Browse around for some fresh finds to add to your home and wardrobe. 11 Gough St., Central, 2253-1313.
Linva Tailor If you need a tailor-made cheongsam or qipao for your next big event, pay a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Leung of Linva Tailor. The couple has been making and hand-embroidering the traditional silk dresses with love and care for the past 40 years, attracting tourists, locals and celebrities alike. 38 Cochrane St., Central, 2544-2456.
G/F, 24-30 Ice House St., Central, 2810-9902.

Live Flawless Spa Immaculately clean with comfy armchairs and a hip urban look, Flawless is one of the best places to go in the city for a professional mani-pedi. They also offer facials with trained therapists who will assess your skin and recommend a course of action with their three brands: Aromatherapy Associates, Algotherm and cosmeceutical brand Medik8, which is exclusive to the spa. 4/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St., Central, 2869-5868.
Caudalie Spa Caudalie Spa in Central is the French skincare brand’s first standalone shop in Asia. Originally born out of a family vineyard, the Bordeaux-based label uses the antioxidant power of grapes to treat your skin. Combine them with a hot stone facial massage, a relaxing arm massage, and a deliciously cozy treatment table, and you have a recipe for serious relaxation. 3 Gough St., Central, 2319-1006.
Lush Spa Devotees of Lush’s 100%-natural handmade bath and beauty products have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first Lush Spa in Hong Kong, covering five storeys and nearly 7,000 sq. feet. The massive undertaking at Lyndhurst Terrace encompasses treatment rooms from the second to fourth floors, and a retail area on the ground floor where customers can pick up all their favorite Lush products, from scented soaps to cosmetics and bubbly bath salts. Soho Square, 21 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 3915-0638.
Something for the Weekend Mount Austin Road Hike, The Peak High atop The Peak, this hike offers spectacular views of the harbor and mountains, as well as some fascinating buildings and stunning houses. The main historical attraction is Pinewood Battery which was originally built in 1901-1905 to defend against entry to Hong Kong’s harbor. While guns were installed, these were never used and were removed until the Battery was needed as an anti-aircraft defense during World War I. You’ll also see The Gate House, which was built in Edwardian times as the gatekeeper’s quarters to the long-gone Mountain Lodge, the governor’s summer home. Start at The Peak Tram Station and finish at The University of Hong Kong; approximately 3.5 km or 2 hours.
Afternoon Tea at the Upper House One of the best places in Hong Kong to enjoy a spot of afternoon tea as you nibble daintily at bite-sized cakes is at Café Gray Deluxe at the Upper House boutique hotel. With stunning panoramic views and an air of exclusivity, afternoon tea at Café Gray is a luxurious affair, featuring a sumptuous spread of pound cakes, scones, tarts, cookies and fresh juices and coffee. 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 3968-1106.
Hong Kong Park This eight-hectare park has a conservatory housing unusual and exotic plants, sports and squash centers, a multi-story playground, a tai chi garden and a clock tower. In the conservation corner are more than 100 species of dragonfly. Of particular note is the aviary, where you can get up close and personal with plumed pigeons the size of turkeys. No, really. 19 Cotton Tree Drive, Central, 2521-5041.

TEA HOUSE TEMPTATIONS Frequented by locals and visitors alike, the Lin Heung Tea House always seems to be busy, whatever time you decide to drop in. Said to be one of Hong Kong’s oldest tea houses, its doors first opened back in 1926 and to this day it remains a popular gathering place for old Hongkongers. But it’s so much more than just a place to drink tea. Lin Heung is justifiably famous for its traditional Chinese dim sum. It’s a memorable experience that you simply have to try. There’s nothing like it in Hong Kong. To be shuffled around and be asked to share a table with random strangers is to be expected. Of course, you’re under no obligation to socialize with your new “friends” or offer them a taste of your food, but the beauty is that you can if you want to do so. “Old-school” is the only way to describe this magical place. The staff, the dishes and even the method they pour the tea—everything about Lin Heung makes it an old-fashioned
10 MYCONCIERGE 2015
classic. Yes, it’s noisy and crowded: but that’s what tea houses are all about! Obviously, there are many options for dim sum in Hong Kong, but the frenetic madness created in a packed tea house atmosphere, with servers pushing around trolleys stacked high with freshly steamed dim sum, means this is an ideal spot to dine. Not much has changed down the years. The Lin Heung Tea House still serves the traditional valuefor-money dishes it always has done—perhaps that’s what makes it such a Hong Kong institution. Go for yourself and find out. 160-164 Wellington St., Central, 2544-4556.

The Optimist
22 Ships
The Optimist is all about northern Spanish food, but this isn’t tapas and paella—instead the centerpiece is the asador grill, serving up HUGE plates of flame-grilled steak and seafood. Keep an eye out for the enormous 1.2kg txuleta steak: Bone-in rib eye, dry aged for 45 days and served perfectly, charred on the outside and red inside. Also excellent is charcoal grilled rice, a beautiful blend of saffron rice with punches of salty iberico pork. The resto is spread over three floors, and each level has a different feel—we like the cool, leafy ground floor with its greenaccented trelliswork. You’ll want to come hungry—and with lots of people— to take advantage of these bites.
Gordon Ramsay protégé Jason Atherton seems primed to conquer Asia’s dining scene: His 22 Ships, named for its address, is a sparsely decorated tapas bar with unfinished floors that serves small plates with a modern twist. They’ve got steaks too, in case you want a proper sit-down meal. Since it takes no reservations, the intimate venue is always packed. Sit at the big central counter lined with high stools, as the chefs and their assistants chat with you and give recommendations for what’s good today. 22 Ship St., Wan Chai, 2555-0722.
Cat’s Eye Vaguely cat-themed, this cozy Japanese omelet rice (“omurice”) resto sees long lunch lines wrap around its storefront pretty much every day. If you get there after 1pm, don’t even think of ordering the signature hamburger steak dishes, as they’re always sold out by then. They’ve got three different base sauces to choose from: Their demi-glace sauce for the wagyu hamburger—which, as the menu proudly states, has been cooked for three days— is a lip smacking blend of beef stock and something that might be magic, condensed into a silky jus. Go early, go often, and go for the wagyu steak. Cat’s Eye, 25 Swatow St., Wan Chai, 2891-8986.

pick your flavor. Besides their massive selection of vermouths, they’ve also got other wines, spirits and cocktails, and the classic Italian food that’ll have your mouth watering for more. 29-30/F, 239 Hennessy Rd., Wan Chai, 2887-0270.
Ham & Sherry Back Bar The sister of 22 Ships down the block, this tapas bar has a not-so-secret watering hole in the back. Here manager Ryan Nightingale crafts silly and fun drinks, specializing in sherry—don’t be alarmed if your drink comes with lights on, literally. G/F, 1-7 Ship St., Wan Chai, 2555-0628.
G/F, 239 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, 2433-3324.
Wine The Pawn This bar is housed inside a Grade II historical facade, and they’ve got British chef Tom Aikens as head of their kitchen. The Pawn is as popular for food as it is for drinks: Russia’s best bartender of 2013, Kirill Runkov, runs the Botanicals bar, so expect killer classics and unique creations all round. 62 Johnston Rd., Wan Chai, 2866-3444.

The Wanch Indie bands love The Wanch, the popular rock music joint that opened back in 1987 and is one of the few longstanding establishments still around today. It’s popular for its hard rockin’ vibe and chilled out regulars—Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash has even stopped by for a drink. There’s live music every night—and if you want to take the stage, it also hosts regular open mic events. 54 Jaffe Rd., Wan Chai, 2586-1621.
Dusk till Dawn This club is open 24 hours, in case you feel the need for a bit of 7am clubbing in the naughty side of Wan Chai. There’s live music, not-so-live music, and a whole lot of patrons: They’ve got hearty pub food that’s highly popular during lunch and dinner, and of course lots of booze. It’s the perfect spot for a one crazy night (or day, if that’s what you prefer).
Negronis for days at Pirata
MyHouse If you’re looking to be a little more ecofriendly and indie (read: hipster), make a stop at MyHouse. This is the place where you can dig into European-style shared plates made with sustainable ingredients, and share a bottle of organic wine as you peruse the old school vinyl collection, which you can play on the individual turntables at each seat. They also have live DJs who only use vinyl because, y’know, you’ve got to keep the beats authentic. 26/F, QRE Plaza, 202 Queen’s Rd. East, Wan Chai, 2323-1715.
Shop Computer Centers Did you want a new computer? Need to recover those raunchy photos from your dead hard drive? Or do you just have a part to replace? Wan Chai is full of techie options. The most famous one-stop spot is the Wan Chai Computer Centre (130 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai), two floors of all things computer, plus computers and mobile phones while you’re at it. The equally popular spot is the 298 Computer Zone (298 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai), which is smaller and grungier, but often with prices to reflect it.
Star Street If you like nice things, take a walk down Star Street (starstreet.com.hk). Drop by 45R if you’re looking for fancy clothes to look casual in: The Japanese boutique specializes in hand-dyed denim. Or, head over to Kapok for carefully curated, design-led clothing, bags, shoes, accessories and books, and chat about it all over a flat white at their coffee shop. Join Star Street’s Happy Hour Club for discounts on bites and booze.
Cosmos Books In case you feel like browsing a bookstore, Cosmos Books (B/F & 1/F, No.30, Johnston Road, Wan Chai) has a great selection of pages in both English and Chinese. Their upstairs floor is filled with English books, novels, textbooks, self-help, plus magazines and an excellent variety of stationery. Pick up a book and head across the street to Coffee Academics for a nice, rich cup of coffee for a relaxing afternoon.

When you’re full up, head to St. James’ Settlement, where you’ll find Green Ladies (85 Stone Nullah Lane), a second-hand boutique that buys and sells new and gently-used bags, apparel, shoes, and jewelry—it’s a great place to pick up some vintage Dior or DVF. TEMPLE TIME It’s said that if you pray sincerely at the Hung Shing Temple your wish will come true. That makes this Wan Chai temple, which dates back to the mid-19th Century, a favorite destination for visitors. Indeed, there’s always a long queue early in the morning. For that reason the best approach if you are planning a sightseeing trip is to book a fortune-telling session in advance, just to be on the safe side. That way you can see everything and get your fortune told all at the same time. The Wan Chai temple is one of several dedicated to Hung Shing, a Tang dynasty astronomer and geographer who forecast the weather for merchants and fishermen. He was later deified and has been worshipped in Hong Kong since. Worshippers of Hung Shing go to pray in the temple on the first and the 15th day of the lunar month and also on the birthday of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. The Hung Shing Temple was originally built next to the shoreline, but after various land reclamations it’s now surrounded by clusters of residential and commercial buildings. It’s thought that the temple was probably built in 1847 and may have existed previously as a shrine. Renovations were recorded in 1857, 1860, 1867, 1949 and 1992. A Guanyin Temple was constructed as an annex in 1867. Boulders hewn from the hillside were used to build the temple, which is a simple one-hall building with a granite platform in front of its façade. But it’s not the appearance that matters here: It’s your future. 129-131, Queen’s Rd. East, Wan Chai.

SHEUNG WAN SAI YING PUN & KENNEDY TOWN

Stylish
SHEUNG WAN, SAI YING PUN & KENNEDY TOWN The areas west of Central are rapidly growing, thanks to the opening of new MTR stations in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong University and Kennedy Town. While this has brought in more crowds, it’s also attracted some of the Island’s best new bars and restaurants.
Dine
Wine
Chau Kee
Mrs. Pound
Let Chau Kee take you through the quintessential Hong Kong “cha chaan teng” diner experience. You’ve got to brave a 15-30 minute wait, but it’s all worth it for their “lava custard” French toast. Fresh ingredients and generous portions make Chau Kee a must-try.
Built as a fictional hideaway for a burlesque dancer, Mrs. Pound is disguised as a shop selling classical Chinese chops, with a special stamp button you have to press to open the door. But that’s the only subtle thing about this restaurant. Inside, Mrs. Pound resembles a neon-lit American diner. The screamingly loud theme isn’t for more subtle tastes, but cool kids will want to stamp this box for its fusion bites and booze.
Shop H1, G/F, Tung Lee Mansion, Water St., Sai Ying Pun.
ABC Kitchen At ABC Kitchen, everybody—and we mean everybody—orders the roasted suckling pig. It serves up classy French food as customers sit elbow to elbow with diners jostling for a cheap and filling meal at the neighboring Chiu Chow, cha chaan teng and dumpling stalls. Shop 7, Queen Street Cooked Food Centre, 1 Queen St., Sheung Wan, 9278-8227.
Teakha Teakha is a lifestyle concept teashop and store: The teas are artisanal and organic, while the products include ceramic cups, handmade crafts and one-of-a-kind clothing, mostly with Chinese elements. Owner and manager Nana Chan says she prefers including products which have a story behind them. Think calm sea-greens and greys, or a single branch against a painted black wall. Oh, and get the iced chai masala on a hot day. Shop B, 18 Tai Ping Shan St., Sheung Wan, 2858-9185.

Sunday’s Grocery Sunday’s Grocery is a local-deli-slashliquor-store that boasts Japanese whiskeys, mescal, and wine and beer on tap (but sold sealed, since the space doesn’t have a liquor license). Foodwise, there are creative made-to-order sandwiches in combos like chicken schnitzel/mushroom and cheese/falafel/ chicken katsu. Buy some beer, take it to the waterfront and snap a pic for Instagram. 66-68 Catchick St., Kennedy Town, 2628-6001.

The Black Star
Mitte
The younger sibling of the ever-sopopular Black Brd on Lyndhurst Terrace, The Black Star sits right opposite Sheung Wan MTR station, making it an easy post-work stop. There’s a plethora of gins and whiskeys lining the shelves, barrel-aged spirits, and it also serves modern European fare.
Combining eclectic Berlin vibes, soundproof doors, live DJ sets, art exhibitions, quaffable cocktails and Italian food all under one roof, Mitte has all the makings of the coolest bar in town. The casual Sheung Wan hangout only has a few seats, though, so either snag a stool at the small bar or be prepared to wait your turn—rest assured the handcrafted food and bevvies are totally worth your time.

Party
Shop Niin Niin has charged its way through the Hong Kong fashion scene with its ethical philosophies and reconstituted, natural materials. The home-grown jeweler offers a minimalist bracelet collection made from sustainable materials with a simple, tie-on design. 200 Hollywood Rd., Sheung Wan, 2878-8811.
Ethos XXX Gallery
Ping Pong 129 With half-a-hundred gins on the menu, you’re not going to get through the bar at Ping Pong 129 in a single sitting. Also on the menu in this amazingly highceilinged space are excellent classic Spanish tapas: from Iberico cold cuts to croquetas, toast with romesco sauce and the excellent (and occasionally dangerously spicy) fried Padrón peppers. Killer atmosphere, killer food and killer drinks.
XXX Gallery is a self-proclaimed night club, art gallery and community space. It’s literally underground, hidden in a nondescript doorway in Shek Tong Tsui, but on a good night the vibes are awesomely chill.
Ethos mixes artwork, craft and food— does it get any better than full-on one-stop lifestyle shop? Try Ethos for simple and chic designs that can fit in any modern setting—and don’t forget to grab a cup of coffee. 93, 97, 99 Hill Rd., Shek Tong Tsui, 2833-2127.

SHEUNG WAN WANDERS Now the climate is cool and dry it’s the perfect time of the year to hit the streets and enjoy the healthy benefits of a good, brisk walk. And there’s nowhere better to take a leisurely stroll than Sheung Wan and Central, where you can take in the hustle and bustle of modern living and discover some colorful, ancient traditions. Get out and about and you’ll be able to sample an enticing mix of old and new cultures from East and West, mingled with a tantalizing taste of urban life. There are many options, but the grand Edwardian Western Market in Sheung Wan is an ideal starting point. Built in 1906, it houses themed shops, tailors and restaurants. From there walk along Morrison Street and turn right into Wing Lok Street. Along with Ko Shing Street and Des Voeux Road West, it’s home to specialty shops selling ginseng, bird’s nests, dried seafood and herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. From Des Voeux Road West turn into Bonham Strand West and continue until you reach Possession Street. Walk uphill and then turn left on to Hollywood Road, one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong. It’s famous for its antique shops and galleries.
Man Mo Temple,, which was built during the colonial era and is dedicated to the gods of war and literature. Continue walking east along Hollywood Road to the CentralMid-Levels Escalator. Take the escalator to Staunton Street and the lively dining and drinking district of SoHo. The escalator steps will take you back to Hollywood Road: Walk east as it turns into Wyndham Street and follow the signs to Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong’s nightlife capital. Then trek up D’Aguilar Street, cross Wyndham Street and turn left on to Lower Albert Road. Follow the signs to Duddell Street, where you can finish your tour with a step back in time. CAUSEWAY BAY & HAPPY VALLEY
雅
Elegant
CAUSEWAY BAY & HAPPY VALLEY Historically a typhoon shelter when Hong Kong was a mere fishing village, Causeway Bay is now a bustling shopping heaven. Despite boasting some of the highest retail rents in the world (at one point even topping those of New York’s Fifth Avenue), the area is a shopaholic’s mecca with plenty of upscale malls, street markets, local and international designers galore—all open well into the night.
Dine
Amigo
Hooray
Ser Wong Yee
A legendary fine-dining restaurant that counts tycoons and government bigwigs among its regulars, the decades-old Amigo Restaurant is hidden in a historic Spanish hacienda that exudes exclusivity. Here, you’ll dine like a royal on an exquisite European menu, attended by discreet waiters and serenaded by a live band.
With a sprawling outdoor terrace and a pretty decent view (if you ignore the buildings pressing up on both sides), it’s hard to believe Hooray is actually smack in the middle of shopping and tourist central. The restaurant plays host to different groups during the night— those who come for an alfresco dining experience and those who come for the decently priced drinks as the sun sets.
Snake stew and liver sausage, normally eaten once the cold winter chill hits, is a fast-disappearing Chinese tradition. 118-year-old Ser Wong Yee is one of the last bastions of the dish, and it’s always busy. The signature snake soup is a hearty broth with lots of ingredients— snake meat, chicken, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and lightened up with chrysanthemum petals or kaffir lime leaves. Taste-test the signatures with a combo meal of snake soup, a dish of vegetables and steamed rice with a juicy liver sausage. 24 Percival St., Causeway Bay, 2831-0163.
Primal Cut Primal Cut toes a fine line between traditional steakhouse and upscale sports bar, with impressive kitchen credentials from chef Tony Wong (who’s worked for Joel Robuchon, among others). Aside from prime rib, you’ll also find beautifully cooked pastas and appetizers to round out a meal. 8/F, 38 Yiu Wa St., Causeway Bay, 2618-3122, www.primalcut.com.hk.

Brecht’s Circle Sharing its name with the German Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht, Brecht’s Circle is a favorite haunt of artistic souls who sit and brood over their imported European beers. Offering a low-key alternative to Hong Kong’s bustling nightlife scene, Brecht’s is a smaller, more intimate place for quiet conversations. Pictures of dictators adorn the walls in pop-art splendor, glaring down on the peons below. The kitchen is open late, mixing up an offering of eats until 1am. Inn Side Out This old Causeway Bay favorite relocated in 2013 to make the South China Athletic Association its home. Yes, you do have to be a member to get a drink—but you can sign up at the door for a $120 year-long membership, AND they’ll give you drinks vouchers for your trouble. Overlooking the driving range, you’re continually treated to the mesmerizing sight of tiny white balls arcing out into the distance below you. The beer list boasts standard commercial brews as well as a whopping 89 varieties of bottled imports. An easygoing vibe, good comfort food and quaffable booze? What’s not to love? 2/F, South China Athletic Association, 88 Caroline Hill Rd., Causeway Bay, 2895-2900.
Ebb & Flow The recently revamped Park Lane Hotel in Causeway Bay now boasts a shiny new lobby lounge, Ebb & Flow, which matches the tech-savvy style of the hotel’s new image—every seat has an accessible outlet to plug in and charge your devices, and menus are presented on iPads. Catering to an all-day dining crowd as well the after work crowd, the lounge serves a selection of tapas in the evenings that you can wash down with a few cocktails, while sidled up at the seven-

On a Wednesday night you can mingle with the masses in the stands, or opt for the more refined atmosphere in the boxes, while cheering for your number with an ice-cold beer in hand. The season runs September to midJune, with about 700 races a year held an average of twice a week, alternating between Happy Valley racecourse and the one in Sha Tin. Happy Valley Racecourse, Happy Valley, $10 admission to public enclosure.
ToTT’s and Roof Terrace Boasting a 270-degree panoramic view of Victoria Harbour, this glitzy fine-dine and bar is located on the top floor of The Excelsior Hotel. ToTT’s has long been one of those places that people rave about— for the views of the harbor, the romantic vibes and the top-notch service. The 34th-floor view, especially on the terrace outside, is absolutely to die for, and definitely worth the splurge. 34/F, The Excelsior Hong Kong, 281 Gloucester Rd., Causeway Bay, 2837-6786.

Try a room escape game, where you’ll have to solve puzzles to get out of a locked room within a time limit. Lost HK has 12 different escape rooms in three venues in Mong Kok, Causeway Bay and Lan Kwai Fong. Rooms are well crafted, with historical touches that lend an air of authenticity. There’s also a cool little fireplace when you enter: so if you give up, you can just relax until time’s up. From $98. A SPARK ON ELECTRIC ROAD The lively Electric Road at the eastern end of Causeway Bay is an ideal spot to spend a lazy weekend afternoon, especially now it’s a bit quieter thanks to major traffic being diverted on to King’s Road. Instead of noise pollution filling the air, these days it’s far more likely that the sounds you hear will be coming from the many restaurants that line the street or the food stall vendors looking to attract a browsing leng nui (pretty girl).
Before heading home grab a fresh juice from one of the many fruit stands along Electric Road. A grape and apple juice mix for about $10 at the Oil Street fruit stall is a refreshing budget-friendly treat. The fruit stall at Merlin Street offers sandwich and fresh juice combos.
Electric Road is packed full of new restaurants, with everything from chic little cafes to hip burger joints, from Korean barbeque restaurants to trendy coffee shops, from traditional noodle shacks to venerable bakeries. A walk along this road is a foodie’s dream.
Walking east, turn left at Power Street, where you’ll soon see a large open public space across from the City Garden Hotel, a perfect place to sit back and drink in the atmosphere. Once you’re ready to head home, the Fortress Hill MTR is just a block away.
Traveling north and east, once you’ve passed the junction of Mercury Street and Gordon Road, you’ll reach the Causeway Bay Market, with its live caged chickens ready for slaughter. Head back to Electric Road to see the small grocery markets, then walk north again to visit Oi! on Oil Street. Once a clubhouse for the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, the building has

THE MAGIC OF ABERDEEN
Anyone visiting Hong Kong or relocating to the city has to find the time to fit in a visit to Aberdeen—a gem tucked away on the south side of the island. There’s something to suit all tastes and plenty to do, but if you work it out in advance, you can manage to cram it all into a day trip. Aberdeen Harbour, which is on the other side of Victoria Peak from the main Hong Kong urban area, is an ideal starting point for your tour. The harbor rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, when it was home to the Hong Kong boat people. Later it became famous as a backdrop in James Bond and Bruce Lee movies. Today you’ll see yachts, fishing boats and floating restaurant boats anchored there. The scenic bay is home to two giant restaurant boats and a number of smaller restaurant boats that double up as homes for their owners.
56 MYCONCIERGE 2015
The world-famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant has attracted millions of visitors since it opened in 1967, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and is an iconic landmark—even if it doesn’t actually touch the land! Along with the equally big and colorful Tai Pak, the restaurant boats serve up good quality seafood and a visit is a must while in Aberdeen. And don’t forget to try out the fish ball noodles, an Aberdeen specialty. Got a little more time? Hire a small boat for a visit to nearby Ap Lei Chau or some of the other islands in the area. No matter what you decide to do, you’re bound to enjoy your visit to Aberdeen.

HEAVEN IN A BOWL Hong Kong has been dubbed the culinary capital of Asia; it’s a place where food is a way of life. Thousands of restaurants are scattered around the city, offering some of the world’s best food. From traditional dim sum to tasty fresh seafood to Chinese barbequed meats, the list of options goes on and on. Whether you want Cantonese cuisine, spicy Sichuan or prefer delicacies from another country, it’s all out there just waiting for you to try. The choice is seemingly endless, so how do you decide where to go for the quintessential Hong Kong dining experience? The best advice is to follow the locals, and one place that locals and visitors alike seem to hanker after is the ever-popular Java Road Cooked Food Centre, one of the best-known dining spots in Hong Kong. And Java Road’s jewel in the crown is the must-visit Tung Po Seafood Restaurant, famed for its unique squid ink pasta. It offers a different take on Cantonese cuisine—some would call it fusion, others would say it’s classic Cantonese with a twist.

Admittedly, the food does come at a price above many other cooked food joints, but it’s always worth the trip, especially for the beer served in blue-and-white bowls. One thing’s for sure: it’s an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life. And in case you need any extra incentive, the fact that Hongkongers are happy to queue up to be seated is surely reason enough to give it a try… 199 Java Road, North Point, 2880-5224.

Khyber Pass
66 Chicken Pot
They say a visit to Hong Kong is incomplete without a visit to the notorious Chungking Mansions, and if you’re willing to venture in the maze of restaurants and tailor shops, you’ll also find some of the best authentic migrant cuisines in the city. Somewhat of a household name, Khyber Pass has had its share of the limelight: It’s been named the city’s “King of Curry.” Try their signature grilled chicken, curry lamb shank, cheese pizza (!), and even a handful of beef specialties.
Cure those cold weather blues with spicy Chongqing chicken pot: A big serving of juicy, bone-in chicken pieces cooked in a bubbly, aromatic spicy sauce, eaten before adding broth to the mix for a traditional hot pot session. Boasting clean and simple surrounds, popular winter haunt 66 has two branches in Mong Kok, just within two blocks of each other. An extensive menu of hotpot ingredients includes a long selection of seafood, sausages, plus interestingly, cheeseand yam-filled fishballs. It also serves up uncommon variations: Try adding a serving of tender pork cartilage to stew in with the chicken. Various locations, including 33 Nelson St., Mong Kok, 2392-4966.
Chum Chum Mi The popularity of Korean Fried Chicken doesn’t seem to ever let up in this city. Chum Chum Mi is cozy with friendly staff and a warm ambience: The restaurant serves up solid offerings of juicy and tender chicken, but also offers barbecue dishes and signature K-cuisine—think stews, pancakes, cold noodles, the works. Get a combo plate of spicy and original plain KFC, then dig in. Shop 17-20 & 31-34, G/F, FHP Shopping Centre, 37-41 Mody Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2363-1100.

This nightspot is exclusive, fitting only 18 people and allowing a maximum of five in a single group. 5/F, Mody House, 30 Mody Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2724-3828.
Wine TAP – The Ale Project This Mong Kok craft beer bar boasts at least a dozen beers on tap, specializing in Hong Kong brewery Young Master Ales, as well as rotating imports, as well as a full list of bottles too. It’s a smallish space with a bright industrial look, crammed full of seats and stools. Punters spill out onto the street, beers in hand for a convivial, neighborhood atmosphere. 5 Hak Po St., Mong Kok, 2468-2010.

Ned Kelly’s Last Stand One of Hong Kong’s oldest bars, Aussie pub Ned Kelly’s (named after the famous Australian convict) is a firm fixture on Ashley Road, especially for those looking for live music. While the drinks are pretty much the usual suspects, the relaxed atmosphere draws in the after-work crew, and the live Dixieland jazz is some of the best we’ve heard. The bar is so laid back, you can pretend you’re a gun-totin’ Aussie badass and no one will bat an eye. 11A Ashley Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2376-0562.

Shanghai Street
Secret garden bar Vibes is a spectacularly spacious outdoor area with sofas, ponds, canopied cabanas, fragrant frangipani and giant lotuses of brushed steel. Mood lighting is provided by handsome cubes that change from soothing green to sexy purple. The best feature of the open-air bar may be the shaded cabanas and comfy couches perfect on which to do some serious cocktail sipping. Resident DJs spin downtempo, nu-jazz tunes all night.
This 2.3km-long street stocks practical cookware for just about any kitchen job you can imagine. While you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of stores stocking similar goods, Chan Chi Kee (316 Shanghai St., 2385-0317) is good for high-grade steel cleavers and chef’s knives with traditional designs, as well as international brands. Budding chefs shouldn’t leave without paying a visit to Man Kee (342 Shanghai St., 2332-2784), a 60-year-old establishment that’s Hong Kong’s last remaining shop specializing in old-fashioned, Hong Kong-made wooden chopping boards, crafted from a single piece of wood.

BREAKFAST DOWN UNDER Students of gastronomy are in heaven in Hong Kong. It’s a food paradise that’s home to a stellar line-up of Michelin-starred restaurants and the city consumes more wine per capita than any other Asian country. But there’s one place that ignores all of those accolades and statistics for good, simple, Hong Kong food. The venue in question is the Australia Dairy Company, a no-frills eatery tucked away in the back streets of Kowloon. No one’s quite sure where the name comes from, but it works! Despite its unusual and somewhat misleading name, ADC, as it’s affectionately known by its band of avid fans, is a must-visit location for all foodies. Queues are commonplace outside this popular “cha chaan teng” tea restaurant. It’s a local diner that operates round-the-clock serving comfort food to order. These days the Western dishes of yesteryear have been modified with local ingredients and have developed into an enticing fusion cuisine, in particular the uniquely fluffy, rich scrambled eggs.
Early morning is the best time to get down to ADC. Unlike dim sum, with the modern cha chaan teng the emphasis is less focused on custom and etiquette and more on speed. That said, it’s never easy to choose what to eat from the extensive menu of delicious food on offer. Locals usually know what they want in advance, so getting a menu is never easy. But once you manage to lay your hands on one, what do you eat? The good news is, it really doesn’t matter— everything’s a winner. It comes fast and furious, just the way you would expect, and tastes great. Whatever you pick is sure to leave you wanting more. G/F, 47 Parkes Street, Jordan, 2730-1356.

The waterfront building has several open-air floors, including a friendly bar downstairs and a more formal dining room on the rooftop where you can dig into western classics and a broad selection of drinks including Japanese craft beer and Pimm’s. A few minutes’ walk from the far end of the Sai Kung seafront, Loaf On is easy to miss—there are no flashy fish tanks or neon lights, but rather minimal white walls and an unassuming entranceway. The subtly decorated Michelin-starred seafood restaurant tempts your appetite with fresh catches of the day. Don’t miss the deep-fried abalone, squid and mantis shrimp, flower crab and their signature deep-fried tofu.

Something for the Weekend Bride’s Pool Bride’s Pool is named after the ghost story about a bride who fell out of her bridal sedan chair and was drowned in this stream. But its spooky heritage doesn’t stop local nature-lovers from visiting. The 70-foot-high falls make for great postcard pictures, and it’s a mere 15-minute walk from the Tai Mei Tuk barbecue area. On weekdays, take minibus 20C from Tai Po Market MTR station and ask the driver to let you know when you’re nearing Bride’s Pool. On Sundays and public holidays, take the 275R from Tai Po Market MTR station.
Cycling in Plover Cove Buddhas 596-732

There are sea and mountain views to enjoy and a tuck shop for refueling, as well as a branch of Fusion supermarket for stocking up on picnic goodies, both of which are en route to Tai Po.

SAI KUNG SWEETNESS Tradition may dictate that desserts are delicately eaten either by hand or using forks and spoons. That belief has now been consigned to the trash can. Here in Hong Kong, a delightful dessert treasure trove is bucking the trend by proudly serving up a delicious, mouth-watering dessert—with chopsticks. Sweetheart Dessert, an enterprising eatery hidden away in a quiet back alley in old Sai Kung town, has proved noodles don’t have to come in savory form. Gone is the idea that noodle soup bases have to be savory. Instead Sweetheart Dessert has created a killer mango juice-based flat noodles dessert that’s to die for. To the naked eye the dish, which is served in a noodle bowl, may at first deceive, but when you tuck in the highly innovative dessert definitely packs a sweet punch. A generous portion of a dozen slices of fresh mango are added and it’s topped off with translucent sago to complete a truly cool delight to tingle the taste buds.
But this dessert haven offers up more than 100 desserts—much more than its tasty sweet variation on the traditional savory version of flat hor fun rice noodles. Among the many out-ofthis-world treats available you can delve into a tantalizing portion of deep fried delicacies, including ice cream, banana and sweet dumplings. Take a stroll around the neighborhood after your tasty treat, taking in the beautiful, sleepy seascape of Sai Kung. A few doors down from Sweetheart you’ll come across a delightful vintage store. Vintage HK is based on second-hand shops commonly found in Europe. The atmosphere inside is laidback and friendly so take your time to look around. Selling retro collectibles from all over the world, including homeware, clothes, accessories and designer jewelry, the quirky store is a treasure trove of shabby chic in a suitably vintage environment: Just like Sai Kung itself. Sweetheart Dessert: G/F, 16 Hoi Pong St, Sai Kung, 2792-8533. Vintage HK: 10 Hoi Pong St., Sai Kung, 2792-0212.
