音樂總監的話 感言 能夠擁有自己的樂團是每個指揮的夢想。2002年，當我開始與香港小交響樂團結緣時， 我的目標只有一個：我要一個能夠真正代表香港的樂團 — 一個能夠讓年輕一代認同、 支持本地藝術發展的樂團。我不肯定18年音樂總監生涯過後，我的夢想是否算成真了 — 但我可以肯定地說，在這段日子中，即使在困難時刻，我從沒感到後悔。我很珍惜與樂團 成員、工作團隊及董事局委員分享及討論各種想法的時光。對此，我感激非常，因為這種 機會不是所有音樂總監都能擁有。 我初上任時便已決定要跟樂團保持緊密的關係，不管是不是我指揮，我都會去看綵排和出 席所有音樂會。許多客席藝術家覺得這做法很奇怪。但我想：即使並非那一次演出的導演 或編舞，劇團或舞團的藝術總監都會經常去看綵排，為甚麼音樂總監不能呢？我出任音樂 總監的時候，香港小交響樂團還很年輕，絕對需要「更用心」去培養。現在想回來，我覺 得我的決定是對的。這樣，我見證了樂團成長的每一個階段。 自從我於2018年底宣佈退任後，許多朋友問我哪一場是我的告別音樂會，以及之後有 甚麼打算。我總回答說：退下音樂總監一職不代表我就跟樂團一刀兩斷。也許這是國際間 許多樂團的「慣常」做法，離任的音樂總監都不會再過問樂團事務。但我定居香港， 香港小交響樂團永遠會是我生活的一部份。未來日子，我還會在港，也會繼續盡我所能， 貢獻樂團。 中文有句話說得好：天下無不散之筵席。這享用了18年的筵席讓我人生充滿了喜悅與意 義，我希望曾被香港小交響樂團感動過的朋友也有同感。樂團尋覓我的繼任人的工作仍在 進行，在此我得謝謝樂團首席客席指揮柏鵬在此期間承擔「照顧」樂團藝術事務的工作。 這新安排將帶來新的化學作用，衷心希望 Christoph 與樂團成員之間擦出新的火花。 最後，我想跟未來繼任者說句話：在你面前是一塊寶玉，請珍惜它，讓它繼續發光發亮。

From the Music Director: a personal message
It is any conductor’s dream to have his/her own orchestra. When I started with Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2002, I had one thing in mind: I wanted an orchestra which could truly represent Hong Kong – one which the younger generation could identify with and one which supported the artistic development of Hong Kong. I am not sure how much of my dream has been achieved in my 18 years as Music Director – but I can clearly say that there was never a moment of regret, even when there were problems. I treasured all the times when I was able to share and discuss my ideas with the musicians, the staff and the board – and for this I am very grateful because I know that not every music director has this kind of experience.

I decided quite early in my Music Directorship to stay close to the orchestra. I attended the rehearsals and all the concerts including those which I was not conducting. Many visiting artists thought this was a strange idea – because normally, music directors of orchestras rarely appear at rehearsals unless they are on the podium themselves. I thought about artistic directors of drama groups and dance groups, who are always at the productions even when they are not the director or the choreographer… and I thought — why not the music director? Hong Kong Sinfonietta was a young orchestra when I started and it definitely needed “care and nurture” then… and I think I did the right thing by making sure that I did not miss the baby’s first steps. Since 2018 when I announced that I was stepping down, many people have been asking when my last concert was going to be and what I would be doing afterwards. My answer was, stepping down as Music Director does not mean goodbye forever! Perhaps this is the “normal” pattern of many international orchestras where the outgoing music director does not get involved with the orchestra any more, but I am a Hong Kong resident and Hong Kong Sinfonietta will always be a part of me wherever I go and whatever I do. Looking at my plans for the future, I will still be in town and I will contribute to the orchestra in as many ways as I can. All good things come to an end and in fact, it is even clearer in Chinese — we say 天下無不散之筵席 (there is no banquet in the world that does not end). This has been a wonderful banquet for 18 years, which has filled me with joy and meaning and I hope everyone whose life has been touched by Hong Kong Sinfonietta can say the same. While the orchestra is going through the process of appointing my successor, I would like to thank our Principal Guest Conductor Christoph Poppen for “looking after” the orchestra's artistic matters. This will be a new kind of arrangement and chemistry and I hope both Christoph and the musicians will gain new perspectives from the relationship. Lastly, I would like to pass this message to my successor: you have acquired a precious jewel. Please treasure and cherish it and it will continue to glitter and shine.

2020/2021 新樂季， 豈止貝多芬 250 周年 Beethoven 250 & Beyond – about the new season 2020/2021 今年全球都在慶祝史上最偉大的音樂家之一、1770年出生的貝多芬之250周年紀念。 香港小交響樂團的慶祝活動其實於去年11月已經開始，率先演奏了他的第一交響曲及三重 協奏曲。可惜的是，踏入2020年，因為新冠肺炎及表演場地關閉，我們未能按籌劃將貝多 芬的精彩作品帶給觀眾。因此，為了讓觀眾能更全面地了解這位音樂巨匠，我們將於新樂 季繼續將更多貝多芬的美樂呈獻給觀眾。 這個樂季，我們還有兩個大型原創製作。一個由於仍未正式公佈，暫時需要賣個關子； 另一個是將於12月演出，與台灣人力飛行劇團合作的原創音樂劇（頁58）。 此外，香港小交響樂團將繼續其香港文化大使的工作 — 於瑞士為巴塞爾音樂節揭幕（頁44） 、 參與法國貝桑松國際音樂節、葡萄牙馬爾旺國際音樂節（頁38） ，以及法國維希歌劇院的夏 季音樂節 (頁40)。四月中，若疫情受控，樂團將遠赴德國演出，並將首度亮相奧地利 (頁26)。 在香港舞台上，樂團一如以往地與國際及本地的音樂家合作。本樂季的駐團藝術家作曲家 鄺展維將為樂團創作新曲，我們也將繼續與外國樂團聯合委約作曲家創作（頁16）。此外， 與香港芭蕾舞團及香港歌劇院的合作亦會繼續（頁78）。 剛卸任駐團藝術家的麥兜和其團隊已積極與樂團開展新項目，這次是與大家共慶農曆新年 （頁72） ！冀望2021年 — 香港，以至世界各地的朋友都會有好的開始。 貝多芬曾言： 「必須如此？必須如此！必須如此！」對的，生命要繼續前進，音樂會也必須如此！

Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, was born in 1770 and the whole world is celebrating his 250th birthday in 2020. We actually started early in November 2019, when we featured his Symphony No 1 as well as his Triple Concerto. Entering 2020 however, with the coronavirus and the closure of performing venues, we were unable to bring you more Beethoven goodies. As such, we have no choice but to extend it perhaps to the following season, if we cannot cover all his main works within this season. We will see how the world progresses with this unexpected virus. This season, we feature two original productions: one is still under cover while this goes to print, but the other will be in December, where we will be collaborating with the Taiwanese drama group Mr Wing Theatre Company on an original symphonic musical (p58). Also in this season, Hong Kong Sinfonietta continues with its spirit of world travel – as we open the KlangBasel Festival in Basel (p44), join the Besançon International Music Festival in France, the Marvão International Music Festival in Portugal (p38), and the summer season of Opéra de Vichy in France (p40). In mid-April, coronavirus permitting, we will also have a tour to Germany combined with our début performance in Austria (p26). In Hong Kong, we welcome, as usual, many international musicians as well as local musicians. This year our Artist Associate is composer Charles Kwong who will be writing new works for the orchestra. We also continue with our co-commissioning projects with international composers (p16). From the pit, we will be collaborating as usual with our partners the Hong Kong Ballet and Opera Hong Kong (p78). McDull (who has just stepped down as HKS Artist Associate for 2019/2020) and his team have already started work to create yet another new programme – and this time to celebrate Chinese New Year (p72). Let’s hope that we will be able to kick off 2021 on a better note – for everyone in Hong Kong, and the rest of the world. Beethoven said, amongst other things “Muss es sein? Es muss sein! Es muss sein!” Yes, the concerts must go on.

指揮家、小提琴家、室樂演奏家及音樂教育家柏鵬在國際音樂界中享負盛名，現任科隆室 樂團首席指揮及香港小交響樂團首席客席指揮。2014年創辦葡萄牙馬爾旺國際音樂節並出 任藝術總監至今。這個樂季「相約大師柏鵬」系列的四場音樂會為本地觀眾獻上多首貝多 芬精彩作品，大師並將於馬爾旺國際音樂節中指揮樂團和科隆室樂團演奏貝多芬第九交響 曲。大師將於樂團音樂總監葉詠詩2020年5月卸任後至樂團委任新總監前，負責樂團的 藝術發展事宜。 A conductor, soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue, Christoph Poppen has made a name for himself in diverse roles in the international musical world, being the Principal Guest Conductor of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Principal Conductor of Cologne Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Marvão International Music Festival, which he founded in 2014. This season, his Inspired by Beethoven concert series with Hong Kong Sinfonietta continues, bringing four exciting programmes to the local audience as well as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on tour to Portugal. 對於任何作曲家或音樂家來說，知音本已難求。而在初出茅蘆時，就遇到對你給予信任和 機會的伯樂，更是難能可貴。香港小交響樂團對於我來說，就是這樣一位伯樂。 我與香港小交響樂團合作始於2009年，當時我不過23歲，剛開始在英國留學不久，在一次 假期回港時獲委約為樂團編曲。2013年完成博士學位回港，首個專業委約也是來自香港小 交響樂團。當年因此創作了管弦樂作品《如川，不舍晝夜》 ，喜出望外地，往後幾年與香港 小交響樂團的合作也是「不舍晝夜」，接連為樂團創作了好幾部管弦樂和室樂作品，其中 《古夢之盡頭》更於2017年獲樂團帶到歐洲多國巡演。 與香港小交響樂團的這些合作，讓我得以在初起步時，就有豐富機會去為一隊水平優秀而 且諳於當代音樂的專業管弦樂團創作，從中累積並建立起個人音樂風格，這對於一個年輕 作曲家來說實在是夢寐以求。不少後來在港和海外的合作對象，也是先從為香港小交響樂 團創作的這些作品認識到我的音樂。而且不得不說，香港小交響樂團實在是一個聆聽創作 者的樂團。在我們多年的合作裡，從來都是給予我最大自由去發揮。這一切，對我的創作 生涯實在無比重要。在音樂路上有如此一個團隊多年同行，實在是非常幸運。 在今個樂季擔任香港小交響樂團的駐團藝術家，倍感榮幸與感激。寫這番話時，剛完成為 樂團的開季音樂會而寫的作品《滅後》，還有另外兩首跳出一般管弦樂委約格局的新作，亦 正在醞釀當中。希望在這新的角色，能與樂團一起打造更多有意思的新作，讓觀眾體驗管 弦音樂所蘊含的創意與無限可能性。 鄺展維 12
For any composer or musician, to have people who appreciate your talent is something precious. But to have someone who has faith in you and offers you opportunities when you are still green and unproven, that is something priceless. To me, Hong Kong Sinfonietta is such a presence. My collaboration with Hong Kong Sinfonietta began in 2009 when I was 23, having just begun my studies abroad in the UK. I was invited by the orchestra to do an arrangement during a semester break in Hong Kong. Later when I finished my PhD in 2013, the first professional commission I received after moving back to Hong Kong was also from Hong Kong Sinfonietta. For that, I wrote the orchestral work As the Streams Never Cease. To my surprise and delight, my collaboration with Hong Kong Sinfonietta has not ceased ever since. I continued to write several more orchestral and chamber works for the orchestra, and among them, At the Very End of Old Dreams was taken by the orchestra to several countries on their European tour in 2017. These collaborations with Hong Kong Sinfonietta have given me plentiful opportunities since an early stage to write for an excellent orchestra who is versed in contemporary repertoire. This has allowed me to develop and establish my personal voice. Such exposure is something to be dreamt of for any young composer. Many local and oversea collaborators I have had in recent years first knew of my music through these compositions I wrote for Hong Kong Sinfonietta. It has to be said that Hong Kong Sinfonietta is an orchestra who listens to their artists. In all of our collaborations all these years, I have always been given the greatest freedom I could have imagined. The many experiences from working with Hong Kong Sinfonietta have been, and will continue to be, an indispensable part of my life in composing. I can only consider myself extremely lucky to have had such a companion along this musical path. I feel very honoured and grateful to have been appointed the Artist Associate of Hong Kong Sinfonietta this season. At the time of writing this message, I have just completed a new work, Pastoral – after we perish, written for the orchestra’s season-opening concert and European tour. Other than that, we are also brewing two other works that would jump out of the norms of usual orchestral commissions. In taking up this new role with the orchestra, I wish to create more new works that intrigue, and let our audience experience the creativity and immense possibilities that symphonic music embodies.
