2 Hong Kong Sinfonietta Limited 2021/2022 Annual Report 2021/2022 是我出任香港小交響樂團主席後首個完整 的樂季。當我愈瞭解樂團的運作和多年來遇到的種種 困難，我愈對樂團這些年取得的卓越成績感到驕傲， 難怪香港小交響樂團會被稱為「能創造奇蹟的小樂 團」！我希望藉此機會向一直勇於面對挑戰、悉力以赴 的樂團同人致謝，也衷心感激香港政府、捐助人與贊 助機構、合作夥伴，以及觀眾朋友們長久以來的信任 和鼎力支持。全仗大家的堅毅精神和努力不懈，這樂 季樂團成績斐然，有目共睹。 我也特別感謝樂團桂冠音樂總監葉詠詩，她不但在我 們委任新任音樂總監前與首席客席指揮柏鵬一起負責 樂團藝術發展事宜，還經常在疫情期間代替未能來港 的客席指揮與樂團演出。當然我不得不提那 18 位在這 樂季無懼隔離、如期來港與香港小交響樂團合作的客 席指揮和演奏家（當中包括樂壇巨星如小號演奏家 納卡里亞科夫和小提琴大師薛高維茨基）。他們為了 與樂團合作，為香港觀眾送上美樂，總共經歷了 378 天隔離（各 14 或 21 天，其中六位參與交響音樂劇 《阿飛正轉》首演的人力飛行劇團演員，在演出後回台 灣時還要再隔離 14 天）！他們的專業精神和對藝術的 堅持，實在令人敬佩。 總括而言，香港小交響樂團在 2021/2022 年樂季以 「看見音樂」為主題，在香港大會堂、香港文化中心、 元朗劇院及西九文化區的戲曲中心舉辦了 19 套節目 （共 35 場演出，平均出席率達 100% ）及八場免費 午間音樂會，把琳琅滿目的管弦樂和室樂節目帶給 32,846 位現場觀眾。另外，樂團也參與了五套舞台製 作共 35 場的演出，讓 43,066 位歌劇、芭蕾舞和音樂 劇觀眾能欣賞樂團的現場演奏。 主席報告 Chairman’s Report
香港小交響樂團有限公司 2021/2022 年報 3 樂團在這樂季再次締造歷史，除了成為首隊在西九文 化區的戲曲中心舉行音樂會的管弦樂團外，還與 MOViE MOViE 再次合作，聯合呈獻「 Life is Art 盛夏 藝術祭」電影節，為電影和音樂帶來新看法。這一年 一度的電影節在 2021 年以古典音樂和香港小交響樂 團為重點主題，開幕和閉幕電影俱為樂團的音樂會電 影首映，電影節的拉丁語口號「 per aspera ad astra 」 也是出自開幕電影《 Back On Stage III: DESTINY 》— 「由微塵到繁星，從黑暗到光明」，道出兩個機構對藝 術能為人帶來希望的信念。電影節選映了 21 部不同 範疇的電影（共 73 場次，以及八部在社區放映的免 費電影），當中包括三部香港小交響樂團音樂會電影 的首映和兩部 2020 年的作品，以及多部由樂團推薦 的音樂電影。我們還舉辦了著名捷克藝術家 JirˇíVotruba 首個在香港的展覽，展出他創作的、繽紛 多彩的作曲家畫像。我們除了在每場樂團的音樂會電 影放映後有分享環節外，也在電影節期間合辦了 11 場講座。這樂季，樂團的五部音樂會電影也在其他 時間於香港和高雄放映過 20 場次。 因疫情關係， 2021/2022 年樂季原定的海外巡演— 包括樂團在英國和西班牙的首演，以及在德國和葡萄 牙的演出—均被迫取消。儘管如此，我們繼續向世 界各地觀眾推廣香港作曲家及他們的作品，也透過網 上多個不同的系列跟本地及海外觀眾保持聯繫。 於上樂季推出、在�水�極�特�的����的 《Tiny Galaxy Concerts @ Wontonmeen》今年再在網 上播出全新五集，加上原本的四集，單在樂團的網上 頻道已被觀賞過共一百萬次！ 由於本地爆發第五波疫情，演出場館再次關閉，令 2021/2022 年樂季在一月份的午間音樂會後提早「結 束」，這對當時已經到港作 21 天隔離的兩位指揮柏鵬 和可說是晴天霹靂。在樂季較早前來港的指揮 佛里斯．維塞斯也同樣不幸—他在與樂團綵排後， 音樂會因演出當天颱風襲港而取消。在疫情下也有多 首委約作品和與海外樂團聯合委約作品的首演需要延 期，當中包括駐團藝術家鄺展維為香港大會堂音樂廳 特別創作的場域特定作品《AtLasT》，原定於大會堂開 幕 60 周年當天舉行的《影幻形光》音樂會中首演， 因場地關閉而延期。這本是樂團首次與城市當代舞蹈 團合作的跨界製作，除了慶祝香港大會堂 60 周年以 外，也為香港藝術節 50 周年及香港特別行政區成立 25 周年誌慶。 雖然 2021/2022 年樂季的環境還是不甚順遂，但我相 信樂團的監察委員會同人跟我一樣看到香港小交響樂 團這一年創造的佳績，將極高水平的好音樂以不同形 式帶給大眾，讓大家「看見音樂」。此外，政府的藝 術發展配對資助計劃帶來的資助，亦讓樂團能更進一 步拓展觀眾和培養新一代音樂家及藝術家，促進音樂 藝術的發展。這一切有助鞏固香港作為中外文化藝術 交流中心的地位，創建文化明天。 香港小交響樂團有限公司主席 潘燊昌
2021/2022 marked my first full season as Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s Chairman. The more I learned about the challenges the orchestra has been facing all these years, the more amazed I am at the remarkable achievements the orchestra has accomplished! No wonder it is sometimes called “the small orchestra that performs miracles”! I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of Hong Kong Sinfonietta for their unstinting dedication, and the Hong Kong Government, sponsors, donors, partners and audiences for their continuous trust and support.
I am particularly grateful to our Music Director Emeritus Yip Wing-sie for stepping in this season for guest conductors who needed to cancel their trips to Hong Kong due to the pandemic, and for overseeing
the artistic matters of the orchestra together with Principal Guest Conductor Christoph Poppen while we searched for a new Music Director. My heartfelt thanks also to the 18 guest conductors and artists –including star trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov and veteran violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky – who braved lastminute itinerary changes and the city’s stringent quarantine requirements, and went through a total of 378 quarantine days (14- or 21-day quarantine each, plus 14 more days back in Taiwan for the six actors in the world première of the Symphonic Musical Pica Pica Choose ) in order to perform with Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2021/2022! Such strong will from all parties and the orchestra’s determination to bring good music to the public were what made this season so successful despite all the challenges.

Hong Kong Sinfonietta became the first symphony orchestra to host concerts at the new Xiqu Centre
In sum, under the season theme of “see the music”, Hong Kong Sinfonietta presented 19 sets of ticketed concerts (35 performances at 100% average attendance at City Hall, Cultural Centre, Yuen Long Theatre and West Kowloon Cultural District’s Xiqu Centre) and 8 free Good Music This Lunch chamber concerts, bringing diverse programmes live to 32,846 audience members. In addition, the orchestra was engaged in five staged productions (35 performances in opera, ballet and Cantonese musical), introducing the orchestral sound to 43,066 audience members.
We made history again this season as we became the first symphony orchestra to host concerts at the new Xiqu Centre, and co-curated the “Life is Art” Film Festival with MOViE MOViE. This unique annual film festival has different focuses each year and the 2021 edition was dedicated to Hong Kong Sinfonietta and classical music; its theme of “ per aspera ad astra ” (from the dust to the stars) was also the concluding motto in the Festival Opening Film Hong Kong Sinfonietta “Back On Stage III: DESTINY”, highlighting our belief that art brings hope to everyone. A total of 21 featured films (73 screenings plus eight other films for community screenings) were featured at the festival in cinemas, including the premières of three new Hong Kong Sinfonietta concert films and two from last season. We also held a special exhibition of illustrations of classical composers by renowned Czech artist Jirˇí Votruba and co-hosted 11 talks at the festival, in addition to the sharing sessions after every screening of our concert films. Outside of the festival, our concert films were screened in Hong Kong and Kaohsiung another 20 times.
Although the orchestra’s concert tours in 2021/2022 –our British and Spanish débuts and concerts in Germany and Portugal – had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, our efforts to connect with people around the world continued online with our various initiatives including the chamber concert series Tiny Galaxy Concerts @ Wontonmeen. Five new episodes were added to the four pilot episodes from last season, and together they had been viewed a million
times on the orchestra’s YouTube channel and Facebook page!
It was most unfortunate for Mr Poppen and conductor Teresa Cheung who travelled to Hong Kong and went through the 21-day quarantine requirements only to find out that their concerts had to be cancelled due to another round of venue closure. A number of world premières and international co-commissions also needed to be postponed. These included the crossover production Reflections on Refractions (a celebration concert for Hong Kong City Hall’s 60th anniversary, Hong Kong Arts Festival’s 50th anniversary and HKSAR’s 25th anniversary) that featured the world première of HKS Artist Associate Charles Kwong’s sitespecific work AtLasT and marked our first collaboration with City Contemporary Dance Company. Earlier in the season, conductor Roberto Forés Veses also had his concert cancelled due to a typhoon on the concert day!
Nonetheless, I am sure my fellow Board members would agree with me that Hong Kong Sinfonietta has delivered incredible results in the 2021/2022 season, allowing audiences around the world to “see the music” through a myriad of concert programmes of the highest quality. With the Government’s Art Development Matching Grants Scheme, we were also able to further expand on our efforts in audience development and the nurturing of young talents. All these will help contribute towards the making of a cultural metropolis that Hong Kong people can be proud of.

香港小交響樂團有限公司 2021/2022 年報 7 翻閱 2021/2022 年樂季節目表，看到我們超過 10 個 演出計劃因場地在第五波疫情的打擊下關閉而被迫取 消，感傷不已。但其實在第五波疫情出現前，表演藝 術節目已面對不少變數。 21 日的檢疫措施對到訪的 藝術家而言是相當苛刻，許多便因此而卻步，而我也 因而史無前例地、更頻繁地指揮樂團的演出⋯⋯ （但我並非在埋怨）。 話雖如此，我們仍有幸邀請多位無懼檢疫的巨星來港 與我們合作演出，如納卡里亞科夫和薛高維茨基。為 了讓他們的檢疫「物有所值」，我們為納卡里亞科夫 於檢疫期間安排了兩次網上交流會，在西九戲曲中心 與我們合作了一場音樂會，在元朗劇院舉行獨奏會， 以及為我們的音樂會電影《 All-Star Tiny Galaxy @ Wontonmeen 》作錄影演出。而薛高維茨基除了亮相 於《最愛小提琴：柴可夫斯基小提琴協奏曲》音樂 會，還跟樂團樂師在他於戲曲中心的獨奏會中攜手演 奏室樂。 我希望藉此機會向我們的首席客席指揮柏鵬致謝。在 這艱難的疫情時期，他不吝地支持我們，我相信他在 「香港檢疫經驗最多的藝術家」名單上，應穩佔首位！ 2021/2022 年樂季的重頭戲之一，便是樂團獲邀聯合 策劃「 Life is Art 盛夏藝術祭 2021 」電影節。樂團在 2020 年疫情初現時便走出疫境思維，開始推出音樂會 電影在戲院上映。各界的熱烈反應出乎我們預期，促 成了我們參與策劃這次電影節的決心，而我們製作的 五套音樂會電影亦成為電影節的焦點節目。這在兩年 前，又有誰會預計得到呢？在整個籌備過程中樂師及 行政部門同事的熱誠投入叫人敬佩。我衷心祝賀他們 這一季驕人的成就—做得好！ 香港小交響樂團桂冠音樂總監 葉詠詩

The Prickle
When I flipped through the yearly schedule of our 2021/2022 season, I was saddened by the fact that more than 10 of our planned projects had to be cancelled because venues were closed during the 5th wave of COVID-19. Yet, things were already rather unsettled before the 5th wave. The 21-day quarantine policy for visitors was harsh on visiting artists. Many decided not to come and I ended up taking up much more conducting responsibility than ever before... No complaints though!
Having said that, we were still able to attract a number of star artists, such as Sergei Nakariakov and Dmitry Sitkovetsky, to come and do the hotel quarantine before performing with us. In order to make their trips to Hong Kong more worthwhile, Nakariakov conducted video Q&A sessions during his quarantine, played a concert with us at the Xiqu Centre, gave a recital at Yuen Long Theatre and performed in our concert film All-Star Tiny Galaxy @ Wontonmeen Sitkovetsky also performed chamber music with our orchestra musicians besides playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto to a full house of audience.
I would also like to extend our gratitude to Principal Guest Conductor Christoph Poppen for his support again and again during this difficult pandemic period. He certainly made the top of the list of “the most quarantined artists in Hong Kong”!
Another remarkable highlight of the season was the participation of Hong Kong Sinfonietta in the “Life is Art” Film Festival as its co-curator. We started filming some of our concerts in 2020 when COVID-19 came. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the whole project eventually evolved into this film festival which featured five of our concert films. This was something nobody would have foreseen two years ago. The dedication and hard work that had gone into the preparation and execution are admirable. My heartfelt congratulations to all the musicians and administrative staff of Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Well done!

香港小交響樂團有限公司 2021/2022 年報 33 由高世章策劃的《我們的音樂劇 Reimagined》 The Originals – Reimagined took audience through decades of original Cantonese musicals 兒童歌劇《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》世界首演 World première of Pierangelo Valtinoni’s children’s opera Alice in Wonderland 「高世章以撐起音樂劇為使命， 只要敢於開拓市場，香港是有機會的。」 《頭條日報》 「音樂會的編排極盡心思⋯⋯ 各人的水平均相當高而且表現完美。」 《國際演藝評論家協會》
the outbreak of the pandemic in early 2020, symphony orchestras around the world were forced to take a long break – a lunga pausa in musical terms, although no conductor got to decide how long the pause(s) would last. In Hong Kong, there were four periods of venue closures between 28 January 2020 and 6 April 2022, and of these 800 days, venues were entirely closed for 347 days while for an additional 43 days, no audience was allowed. After the first venue closure, the orchestra jumped at the opportunity to play again in the concert hall and filmed an all-strings concert. Hong Kong Sinfonietta “Back On Stage Concert” soon became the first concert film by a local orchestra shown in cinemas in Hong Kong, with screenings at MOViE MOViE and Broadway cinemas. Since then, the orchestra has released another four concert films and cocurated the “Life is Art” Film Festival, and our first two concert films have been screened in Taiwan. As concert hall doors closed, new doors waited to be opened. We are proud to have seized the opportunity and made history.

34 Hong Kong Sinfonietta Limited 2021/2022 Annual Report 音樂會電影 Concert Films 因為疫情的關係，本地的演出場地自 2020 年起關閉了四次，當中共 390 天不開放予觀眾進場。但若能堅守信念，放開眼 界，疫情帶來的也許不只逆境，還會帶給我們「新」機。香港小交響樂團在 2020 年 6 月趁場地首次重開時便馬上走進沒有 觀眾的音樂廳，拍攝了一套弦樂音樂會，這便成為首部百分百香港製造、登上香港戲院大銀幕的樂團音樂會電影。之後樂團 再推出另外四部音樂會電影，亦繼續與 MOViE MOViE 合作，共同策劃了 2021 年「Life is Art 盛夏藝術祭」電影節，為電影 和古典音樂帶來新看法。樂團首兩部音樂會電影也在這樂季衝出香港，在台灣上映。一扇門被關上，自有另一扇門可待開 啟。香港小交響樂團很高興能戰勝挑戰，締造歷史，放眼明天。 Following
