The Ultimate Chameleon Construction & Craft

Create... Self-Esteem in Youth Designing for a healthy self-esteem in youth by means of active creativity.

Abstract Background:

Within the 9-12 age group self-esteem is a rising issue. A multitude of different factors in adolescent life create stresses that can lead to low-self esteem. This low self-esteem can lead to depression and overall performance drops in school. Exploring the nature and structure of self-esteem as a dynamic system it can be seen how it can be shaped and changed. This research looks at using active creativity (the ability to imagine and to create by a physical means; interacting with a person or object) as a tool to develop a healthy self-esteem.

Results:

From numerous interviews and insights one is able to draw the conclusion that if active creativity is used, directly addressing the components that form the basis for healthy self-esteem, it can have a lasting impact. Focusing on the idea of “working with your hands” it is obvious how toys such as construction sets, make-believe toys, and crafts fall into this area of active creativity. One finds in the interviewed reflections that these activities leave a lasting memory. This exploration of new ideas, thoughts and beliefs, being acted out through active creativity, teaches the child how to better grasp and develop their own self-concept. This ability to explore and share is vital in developing a healthy self-esteem because a large part of selfesteem is based on the evaluations of oneself, both from one’s own perspective and from that of one’s peers.

Conclusions:

Self-esteem can be shaped by means of active creativity. To create a positives experience with active creativity one must address the aspects of the play cycle: exploring, imagining, making, socializing, and positive feedback. Consideration must be taken to provide a hands on experience, and a lasting tangible result to the activity. This will allow the participating youths to explore their self-concept, and will promote further creativity and social interaction. The mobility of the design must be considered to allow for various locations; and a technological aspect should be considered to keep the interest of today’s technologically minded youth. If all the criteria are met then the experience provided would help in developing a healthier self-esteem.

Foundation of a Healthy Self-esteem The foundation of healthy self esteem is formed from a number of interrelated aspects. Knowledge of one’s self, understanding how that relates to the knowledge about others, and the interpersonal skills required to further develop this understanding through social interaction and examination from alternate perspectives. The foundation aspects are highly interconnected. Confidence, Reliance, Acceptance and Expression share reciprocal relationships. Selfconfidence is the ability to be comfortable with whom one is, and the understanding you can be different and have a right to express it. Confidence is strengthened by the positive feelings associated with being self-reliant and the feedback provided from self- expression. Self-Reliance is the ability to cope and adjust with different situations. In turn and self-confidence allows one to be certain in their abilities, promoting further self-reliance and expression. Expression allows a person to explore and accept themselves, to know what they are good at or have to improve on. In turn this self-acceptance allows an individual to further explore and express who they are. Selfacceptance and Self-Confidence affect and individual’s self awareness, their ability to understand their own feelings and understand how to address and change those feelings.

Play its Purpose in Adolescents Play serves to make us more adapt and sociable and helps in learning to solve many different problems. Adolescents being a time of great change in life, play becomes a very important factor to understanding those changes. Brown statement, “the self that emerges through play is the core, authentic-self,” is important in showing that play is a way to express oneself and work through issues. (Brown S 2009:107) Also another issue that Brown points out that play aids in is, “the goal of adolescence is not only to acquire the skills to thrive in a world in which we are mutually depended, but also to acquire a sense of individuality and uniqueness. Kids have the task of separating themselves from their parents while maintaining a close and affectionate relationship. “ (Brown S 2008:109) Play provides this outlet and can be used as a tool to help develop a healthy self-esteem.

Active Creativity The process of active creativity lends its self to being used as a tool to develop a healthy self-esteem because it provides the means to explore, imagine, create, socialize and obtain feedback. Active creativity as mentioned previously shows up in pieces of hobbies but it is rare to find it as the whole cycle in one activity.(Brosnihan 2009b) It provided a form to express, build confidence in skills and develop self confidence and a sense of self-reliance in being able to create for oneself and others.

The Community is the social forum; how an individual relates to others and their own centre. It provides the ability to interact with others. It relates to ones core by exploration/games. Exploration and games provided the necessaries platform to connect with others. The community ring provides the tie into social technologies that modern youth’s expect. It helps to develop interactions that promote self-concept through positive feedback. The feedback loop describes how the processes can be continued and tested. It does this by promoting adolescences to share their ideas, teach others skills, show off their own creations, and role-play on a virtual stage.

Feeback Feedback An Evaluation Tool By giving and receiving feedback from the community one creates an evaluation of themselves. This evaluation results in knowledge and confidence in new skills, the ability to express themselves in new ways, and acceptance of their own abilities and the abilities of others. These factors, as in the healthy self-esteem model, tie into being fully aware of oneself and lead to the development of a balanced and healthy self-esteem.

The World

The World

The World The Tealian world is a serial of sea floating island where different tribes/family group live. there are larger island that are anchored to the core of the world. These large islands serve as cultural centres in the world. the rest of the world is covered in a vast sea. The islands function in layers the higher sky bound parts you can find Aero-tealians on the land you can find Tera-tealians. Near the core point on anchored island you can find the Pyro-tealians. On the underside in the tunnels the sea has worn away is where the Aqua-tealians dwell on floating and anchored island.

The Tealians

Aero-Tealian Inspiration

Aero -Tealians are flying Tealians. Some of them have real wings where others have ones made from metal and technology (steam punk). Aero-tealians are very much in to latest technology and their cities revolve around this. Their history is greatly rooted in technology and due to that some of it over time has become corrupted. Fewer Aerotealians have learn the way to acquire really wings and because of that more technology has being created to assist with this issue. The birds in the world are sacred to them treated as equals. Along with this feathers are extremely treasured items. Aero-tealians are based on a mix of Asian cultures and myths along with this they have strong undertones of steam punk in their technology. They skills and crafts revolve around building, flying and electronics. Most of their games and sport revolve around flying. Such games as lacrosse make an appearance in some form.

Aero-Tealian

Pyro-Tealian Inspiration

Pyro-Tealians are one of the oldest species of Tealians. They dwell in the caverns of volcanoes. As volcanoes only tend to form on larger islands that are anchored to the core of the world, Pyrotealians tend to be harder to find on floating islands as they relies on the warmth of the volcano for heating their homes and the fires for their trades. Pyro-tealians are very mystical and believe that different gem hold different powers. They are extreme good builders but is recent millennia some of these skills have disappeared. Large parts of their history are shrouded in mystery as though they were erased. Sometimes artifacts are found in old abandon caverns. Pyro -Tealians draw from the Aztec and Mayan cultures but parts have being lost to time. They are extremely talented with Metal, stone, gem and sand work. Most of their trades, skills and crafts all revolve around this. Sport wise they play a game similar to basket ball that draws from the aztec ball courts.

Pyro-Tealian

Tera-Tealian Inspiration

Tera-Tealians are one of the youngest species of Tealians and have a somewhat short documented history as their heritage is pass on by song and story. The Tera-tealians are sometimes referred to as the soil dweller or the harvester and herders, this is because they have an agrarian culture that relies on their crop and trade. Tera-tealians can be found on the surface of islands and can be found on a great deal of floating island as they tend to move where ever they can plant crop and herd their animals. Tera-Tealians life styles and trades are influenced by the Native American. With such tribes as the Mohawks and the Shoshone for a basic of how their legend and myth is pasted on. Along with their nomadic and sometime village lifestyles. There range of skill are vast with the materials they use, such as woods and fibers and leathers. They are extreme good at domesticating animals and tending to plants. They tend to play field based game such as hockey or football.

Tera-Tealian

Aqua-Tealian Inspiration

Aqua-Tealians are a free spirited and extremely good swimmers due to their webbed hands feet as well as their fins. Their life’s revolve around the ocean currents and the waxing and waning of the moon. They have a well documented history that is carved in the a caverns the sea has hollowed out for them. These glyphs are a higher type of writing that the priest and priestess are trained in. The main stories of their history are passed on through song and dance along with festivals. Aqua-Tealians tend to be found in the vast cavern network made by the water. The AquaTealians rely on fishing to live and the gathering of different sea kelps. They are also known for their shell armors, sand art and sculpture, as well as their boat making and ferrying trade that they uses Brioroos for. Aqua-Tealians tend to be collectors so it is likely to find a certain type of shell that they like and collect them. Aqua-Tealians are based on the Druids as well as some Greek mythology. Their culture revolved around the seasons and the moon is a very important item for them. There calendar revolves around the moon cycles and you can see a lot of circular design in their housing and crafts. There favored sport is variation of water polo and cricket.

The Craft Process

Experiments with Weaving Weaving seemed like a great starting craft for the Tealians as weaving and knot tying are seen in a range of different cultures . Weaving and knots are used in nets for fishing to clothing and accessories so it seem like a great medium to included to start with. It’s a bond that all Tealians could share. I started with a range of different ways of knitting to weaving and found that a variation of spool knitting was a simple but striking way to create lots of different items. It also could be worked into the waste spruce plastic so all plastic would be used. Different loom shape could provided different looks. As well as showing how to finger knit and turning the Tealians staff into a weaving tool through the use of video tutorial that the online game environment provides.

Experiments with Felting Felting was another medium that I felt could be used in a number of ways within the Tealians world. It could provided for animal creatures and the notion of being a care takers. Also felting is a simple but activate craft that all ages and genders seem to enjoy. Wet felting was a great medium to test out because it is just soap, water and wool so it is a super clean craft. I looked into what types of felting was done and developed a set around being able to use form for hats and shirts to felt over as well as creating flat panels to mix in.

Experiments with Metal Soft aluminum provided another medium to explore. I had done a previous craft with children during my research phase and it was well liked. It is an easy medium that can be embossed, punched out or pressed into different shapes. I could easily see it going with the Pryo-Tealians as one of their craft forms.

Overview

Tealians are an online and physical world construction- craft toy and game. The premise of the brand is to promote learning, creating and sharing. It is aged toward 9-12 year olds with the aim to help promote positive self-esteem and an “ I can do it attitude”. Tealian’s physical products start with a basic construction set where the child builds their Tealian and then adventures through the on-line world for patterns and decals that they then make in the real world for their Tealian character to make them unique. Along with this Creator Island sets provide expansions to the worlds and the ability to learn a new skills.

Joint design

The joint design consists of a snap together ball with a rod end. This rod end goes into the body piece and with the join assembled there are two rod ends. Currently there are 3 joint sizes there is the wish to expanded up with 2 more sizes for larger mount like characters for a high price point. The joint design provides a unique ability to pose unlike most action figures or dolls on the market. It does this by making the joint a key building item and separated away from being built into the body. With the joint separated you are then able to create more universal building parts and mixing and matching becomes part much easier and the character become much more posea ble. This also provided a much stronger connect to being a building construction toy instead of a static model kit.

Virtual Product Is a computer game that is based online as a MMO (Massive multiplayer online) based on an adventure questing system but isn’t a set up like a traditional RPG (role playing game). By doing quested and solving puzzles in the game you find patterns and decals for the Tealian action figure. Some quests are one player and other ones involve groups of players. This group play helps provide a strong social community in the game. Another ability of the group play is to be able to log-in two Tealian accounts on one computer/ internet connection and quest together to promote face to face social interaction. (tealian making parties)

With-in the game there is also a market place to exchange patterns (videos) the user makes or textures they have created. In game credit system for market place. Along with this users are able to chat to people that they have befriended (this with have build in parental control and warning system to protect users) and can do gift exchanges with friends. There are many sub-games such as the pattern maker and decal maker in the game that provided to the users to generated content as well as user generated quests. The users will help to shape the world. Along with the quests in the game with reveal the history of Tealians and the mystery that are in there world for animals to cultures and heritage. Game related quests will mostly deal with the past of the Tealian as the user will generate for the current Tealians.

Make It & Adapt It!

Creator Island Sets Provides more “make it” experiences. It does this by introducing different type of “crafts” (crafts can be traditional crafts to computer related crafts such a programming, pretty much anything that can be a hobby can be a craft) These craft sets provide the means to make or participate in the craft that it is related to. The set provided the tools and some of the materials to create with. Other materials are found by the child in their home and are recycled items that would no longer be of use such as scrap fabric or a button, ect. or from a craft store. The instruction to start is included with the game CD/DVD that adds the expansion for the game.

The CD adds a new island to the game and more quests and puzzles related to the craft of the set. The child then goes on a quest and get a patterns to make items related to the set to understand how to use it. The Instructions are done with video tutorials that can be saved to the computer or iPod as well as some light figure instructions that can be printed if needed.
