Happy Thanksgiving
President’s Pointers | Be Thankful: An Increase in the Reduction by Candra O. Lacy This November many of us are focused on preparing for the big meal – a Thanksgiving feast fit for every family member and friend and play cousin and old neighbor you’ve had since 1st grade. Lots of preparation goes into the day. A trip to the grocery store, a few calls to moms, aunts and sister-friends for recipes, an hour or two of pantry rummaging because you KNOW you purchased a bag of brown sugar last month, two more trips to the grocery store and one more call because the final dish is missing something. Ah! A Demi-glace. The recipe calls for a demi-glace. A WHAT? A reduction or a long simmer of liquid that creates a more flavorful glaze, gravy or sauce, increasing the deliciousness of food. So, yes, that holiday ham is a little… dry because you missed the reduction. Now, if you’re like me and only an experimental cook, you may question why overlooking the reduction is a problem.Actually, it’s not a problem. You’ll still have your holiday ham, people will still eat it and you’ll still be thankful that the meal wasn’t a travesty because of your cooking. But, a
reduction is a finishing touch. It makes the meat… better. In other words, a reduction makes room for increase. Sister, in many ways we all have experienced or are experiencing a sort of cooking reduction. Things were just fine, going on as we had mapped out and then unimaginable loss. This Thanksgiving Season, I want you to find thankfulness in the reduction. Look for gratitude in giving. See the beauty of all things with a new awareness and appreciation through service. Expect an increase in the display of sisterhood from the magnificent, mobilizing and magical sisters of Houston Metropolitan. Prepare for the increase of God’s favor and love as you commune with Him. Be thankful to the Lord and bless His name. Psalms 100:4b In service, GRATITUDE and love,
Because of you, sister – near or far, I am thankful:

HMAC: Sisters Lighting the Way | The Local Impact of Sisterhood by Ja’Milla C.K. Lomas, Corresponding Secretary
We are many heartbeats beating as one; dedicated to the service of our sisterhood, scholarship and the social well-being of our Community. The beauty of our most Beloved is that we may accomplish these missions abundantly, in single bounds and in singular programs. In our endeavoring to maintain our physical and mental health (for, to be the backbone and moral strength of a people, one must prevent weakness to accomplish much that we must do) HMAC indulged in a bit of light fun, rejoicing in a collective freeing of the mind and body, letting go of the taxing stress of storm’s past. Allowing for genuine moments of self-care will help us fully rededicate ourselves to the mission of serving those in our Community who need the light that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provides.
Houston area, HMAC and friends showed just how mighty our dollars and influence can be…when concentrated…and focused. With persistence and purpose, consistency and collaboration Our businesses locally, regionally and nationwide can and will thrive. Especially when lead with the light of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In our gratitude for the richness of donations received from Sisters around the country, HMAC became ever-more buoyed and soared. Gathering, sorting and distributing the plethora of Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort items, many who were negatively impacted by the effects of the storm will receive the benefits of this bounty. We strolled and fellowshipped, inventoried and disbursed. With dedication in our hearts, HMAC will continue to be a beacon of light for those in the Community who are in need of hope. We
are dedicated. We are persistent. We are grateful. We are HMAC.
In our persistence to increase the economic strength of our Community, HMAC engaged in a singular event that will be repeated and duplicated until it catches fire. Mobbing with cash and presence one of Our businesses in the downtown
A Love Note from Your Chaplain by Dana A. Burns Reaping the Love that we Sow
But what we plant must return to us.
Let’s begin this sorority year doing everything as if we are doing it unto God and showing genuine love.
Today, we will plant LOVE and watch it grow in abundance!!!
If a farmer has two seeds in his hand—one is a seed of corn, the other of nightshade, a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of both...the land will return what was planted. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn’t care what we plant... success...or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety, and so on.
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. Prayer Requests Please keep those in sorrow, who have lost loved ones, and in mourning; those in pain, ill and aggrieved; and all those who are in need of guidance and comfort, in prayer. Program Stoplight: Power in Economic Numbers by Elizabeth L. Humphrey, Economic Development Chair This year the Economic D e v e l o p m e n t Committee would like to emphasize the holistic impact that Financial Fortitude has on our communities. Financial security plays an integral role in our ability to engage politically. Without financial stability, we are not able to fully devote our attention and resources to help community members who fall victim to political disenfranchisement.
view of financial health in mind, the Economic Development Committee is looking to build upon award-winning programs that were executed last year.
Financial freedom is also a critical element to our mental health. We are at an increased risk of suffering from anxiety and depression if we live in a perpetual state of financial distress. Accumulating wealth also enables us to support African American artists, authors, and playwrights, as well as our brothers and sisters in the international community that may require our assistance. With this comprehensive
The Economic Development Committee has kicked off our 2017-2018 dFree® for Financial Freedom Program with a launch event on November 4th at the Hiram Clarke MultiService Center . Financial Freedom for our HMAC Family is closer than ever! Join us on this journey as we “turn our debts, delinquencies and deficits into deposits, dividends and deeds”!
Billion Dollar Pay Down launches November 1. This year our debt pay down goal is $700,000. We will need every soror to log all their debt to achieve this goal.
