Presentation Personal Statement (summary) Designing the experience for the end user is what motivates me the most in my design process. I cannot say if I prefer working on a bigger scale or in the smallest one but I do like to create buildings strategically well integrated in a city and intelligently designed both on the outside and on the inside regarding a strong engagement of the materials with light and shadow. During the time I spent in the Netherlands I came to realize that the Dutch architecture is highly varied in aspects such as morphology, typology, materials, textures and colours. I particularly admire this openness for experimentation that I never had in the past. The intelligent contemporary Dutch way of designing is my biggest motivation for taking the Master of Architecture, Building and Planning. A creative, rigorous and technical way of designing is what I expect to greatly improve by studying in TU Eindhoven in case I am accepted. In my studies I have been very influenced by Robert Venturi and his books. In Iconography and electronics upon a generic architecture. A view from the drafting room, Venturi acknowledges “the elemental quality of architecture as shelter and symbol - buildable and usable shelter that is so meaningful as a setting for living”. In my master’s thesis I would like to combine this symbolic/iconic vision of architecture and use it as a possible way to fight against the “voids” in our cities whether they are socially segregated areas or industrial/infrastructural areas. As every architect should be, I am a problem solver and I ally dedication to creativity to master the complex situations I come across with. I am determined to become a better architect, aware of the world that surrounds me, able to design everywhere and one that has no fear of dealing with new and complex tasks. That’s why TU Eindhoven is a remarkable choice for me and I wish I have the opportunity to make part of this great institution.

Residence for 3 students
Architectural Design 1 - 1st year/2nd semester The final exercise in the Architectural Design 1 course was a Residence for three college students: painting student; sculpture student; architecture student. The program contemplated common spaces such as a living room, kitchen, laundry and a studio, and individual spaces such as the three independent cells. The location for this residence would be in a vacant terrain, in a part of the city of Porto that lacks urban consolidation. The previous statement is the reason why I haven’t created any relation with the buildings “nearby”. Although, the breathtaking view of the Douro river (from east to west) and the Arrábida bridge (west), were taken into consideration and dictated the implantation of the residence. My design divides the terrain into four different areas, being two of these reception areas (north), where the relations between the building and the exterior are more introverted, to maintain the residents’ privacy because the street is at a higher level. The two other areas (south) are for a more intense relation of the inhabitants with the exterior, because they are more intimate, have better light and view. I decided that the building’s shape should be simple in order to create a more beautiful design. A long and sloped roof protects and unites the living areas and a long wall extends from the studio to a balcony that comfortably allows to appreciate the view. With these two distinct and oblique directions, from the roof and the wall. I organized my building for four different moments that respond to different uses: leisure, work, intimacy and view contemplation. The Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha inspired me in this project, especially because of the lightness yet robust geometric volumes that we can see in his designs. But my biggest inspiration was a trip that I made to some of the most incredible houses in the north of Portugal, where the rough geography of the landscapes presented difficulties, but where taken as a design advantage.

Cultural center
Architectural Design 2 - 2nd year/1st and 2nd semester The site of this project is itself complex regarding social and urban aspects. It is located near Porto´s downtown and in front of the Douro river. In a socially highly contrasted area, where the narrow and old houses compose the water front, I had to design a 2646 m2 cultural center with a residence included. The first question I asked myself was: how can I create a building that will actually make this place better? I had to design a building and the public spaces in the platform that were between the built houses to east and the massive Alfândega building (also a cultural center) to west. To east the main street reaches a maximum height of 7m in relation with the platform and that seemed to me a strategic place to inplant my design. On the one hand the contemporary and large volume would have a lighter presence in the street facing the historical buildings, but on the other hand, on the platform the sense of scale would be mastered by playing with the scale perception of this design in the different moments of the promenade architecturale. Although respecting the context, I wanted this design to have the presence it deserved for being an exceptional building. For that mather I placed a tower on top of the entrance where the light acts as the main performer, bathing the concrete texture of the walls during the day, and revelling the presence of the building at night resembling a light house. The separation of the functions is very clear. On the top floor is the residence, on the middle floor the cultural area and on the basement the parking lot and the technical areas. The design of the public space is somewhat surgical and consists in designing a path next to the river with subtle differentiation from the bigger open areas only through pavement variations in scale, direction and material/texture. The cafeteria makes the most direct relation between the public space and the cultural center. The trees offer shadow and at the same time hide the unpleasant side wall of the Alfândega building. The effort in maintaining a close relation between the street and the locals with the river motivated the outcome of my proposal. At this time I was absolutely fascinated with the architect Tadao Ando and he was my biggest inspiration. In addition I had made a one week trip to Lyon, stopping in several cities in Spain and France, and had the wonderful opportunity of visiting some of Le Corbusier´s masterpieces as Ronchamp, La Tourette and Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. My admiration for this architect grew exponentially therefore his works have also been essential for this project

Communicating the synthesis of a design
The result of project thinking and free hand drawing experimentation in the process of creating and transforming places. Drawings of the design I developed in the Architectural Design 2 course. I also applied with this drawing for the Drawing of the year 2014 competition by Aarhus School of Architecture.

Collective housing
Architectural Design 3 - 3rd year/2nd semester The main focus of the Architectural Design 3 course is collective housing. Throughout the whole year I studied and developed different housing buildings with different types of accesses (access by a gallery, vertical point access, direct access) and an urban plan for a specific location in the city of Porto. For the last three months of the academic year I had to design one of the residential buildings of the plan I developed before. My choice was based upon two reasons. First I wanted to develop one of the buildings that required more functions besides housing and second, I wanted a building along a street in order to have more time to master this project up to its details and engage the technical and programmatic adversities within the design itself. I also made an effort in creating a façade system that suggested movement instead of being rigid as residential buildings tend to be, but at the same time fulfilling the actual living demands. The façade is composed mainly by zinc sheets because I wanted to experiment an unusual choice for this kind of building and in a sense this could be a critic to some nearby new residential buildings that are boring and apparently only serving commercial purposes. In the living units I sought for a continuous circulation path around the unit. By being a multi-purpose room (sleeping room, office, part of the living room) the division next to the living room would add the possibility of not having to go back to the entrance to reach the living room. The alignment of the kitchen (north) with the living room (south) allows the illumiation of the entrance hall with natural light and also shows the outside view right when entering the house. The position of the solar panels created the pretext to invent exceptional units on the top floor of the building. For this design I was greatly inspired by two trips I made to Berlin and The Netherlands, especially in the new residential buildings built in the docks of Amsterdam, where West 8 designed a magnificent urban plan. During this year I had also gone inside some of Porto’s most interesting residential buildings including Parque dos Navegantes and Edifício Boavista, both by Álvaro Siza and two of the best residential buildings I know and which have influenced me the most.

Accommodation for a visiting scholar Construction 3 - 4th year/1nd semester
For the Construction 3 course we were given three months to design a small house for a visiting scholar for a site next to my school (Porto). The main focus of this exercise was to research and design at the construction detail level. This was a five element group work and the façade and roofing materials were randomly distributed to the groups. We were assigned the polycarbonate façade and the ventilated zinc roof. Light and thermal comfort dictated the placement of the building in the lot. We wanted to take advantage of the trees in the south side in a way that during the summer the house would be protected by the shadows and receive indirect light and during the winter the light would invade the interior creating a warmer sensation equivalent to a greenhouse. The double polycarbonate wall was designed to also enclose the structure and the mechanical, electrical and plumbing devices, thus enhancing the small interior area. To avoid the “greenhouse effect” during the summer we developed a system that consisted in the ventilation of the exterior walls all around the house, by just rotating polycarbonate panels on the top and bottom. My commitment to this project was crucial for its improvement. I leaded the group and came up with the main ideas previously stated, but nonetheless these were discussed among the group’s elements and reached its outcome thanks to the contributions of each one of us. I worked mainly on the drawings of the roof and its intersection with the exterior walls and I also did the daylight render.

Public Baths
Go Architecture 06 - November 2014 “Go architecture” is basically a contest for ideas. The site and the program are revealed only 48 hours before the deadline, although this year the program was to be freely decided by each team regarding what they thought the site was lacking. My group had three elements and after some research about the place we found out that the social aspects were especially crucial when designing for this location. This area of the city of Porto is historically rich in water in contrast to the poverty of the locals who live in small houses sometimes lacking a bathroom. Considering also the big percentage of homeless people in the neighborhood, we came up with the idea of designing a building that brings together public baths, a laundry and a multipurpose room. We intended this building to be more than a body cleansing space, being a place for the community welfare too, reaching out especially people marginalized from society. To sum up, this is a space for social and urban revitalization. Our inspiration came mostly from Peter Zumthor’s Therm Vals, and Paulo Providência’s Lavadouro e balneario S.nicolau. The contributions of each element in the group were simillar because this was a project were we had to be completely involved to finish on time. Besides, the three of us had similar expectations and the ideas evolved from a mutual thinking and debate. The renders were made by me and the photomontage of Bernardino Luini’s Fanciulle al bagno painting was made by other element of the group.
