Industry News Facebook Finalises WhatsApp Acquisition Facebook announced on the 6th of October it was closing its $22 billion deal to buy WhatsApp after declaring its intentions to take over the cross-platform mobile messaging app back in February. The announcement comes three days after the deal cleared its last hurdle and received approval from the European Commission, which ruled that the purchase wouldn't hurt competition. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission gave the deal its regulatory blessing in April. As part of the deal, WhatsApp cofounder Jan Koum will join Facebook's board of directors. Facebook has promised to run WhatsApp as a separate entity, and WhatsApp's founders are not planning to bring any advertising to the platform. WhatsApp currently claims more than 600 million users. Facebook could have acquired some pretty interesting things for the takeover price tag of $22 billion such as buying 17 homes for every homeless person in America, purchase 381 tons of Gold Bullion, or buy an entire fleet of brand new Boeing 747s.
iOS 8 Updates Slow With the introduction of custom keyboards, Notification Center widgets and lots more, upgrading your Apple device with the iOS 8 update seems like an obvious choice. The reality of the statistics made available by Apple tells a different story with acceptance of the update being far lower than expected. According to stats displayed on the company's developer portal, the proportion of iPhone and iPad owners currently running the latest version on their devices stands at 47 percent, only an increase of 1 percentage point from two weeks previous. By this point last year, iOS 7 uptake was already holding strong at around 60 percent. The drop in the updates popularity could be down to many things but it seems likely a combination of very large install files, the bungled point updates, and the dropping of iPhone 4 support. This could
be reason enough for many users to stick with what they know, for now. The update is crammed with new features making the lack of downloads surprising. In iOS 8, when an email arrives with details that aren’t already in your contacts, a box appears at the top of the message. Tap either to ignore so it just vanishes or pick add to contacts and the new info is folded into a new or existing contact. It’s painless and satisfying to use and keeps you up to date in the process. The introduction of SwiftKey is a popular feature with the typing system having multiple input choices including SwiftKey Flow where you swipe your finger around the keyboard without lifting it.
Web Browser for Samsung Gear S The Samsung Gear S has received its first web browser, the Smartwatch will boast the latest Opera Mini Browser technology to utilize the devices online capability. Announcing the news, Opera said "The Internet is something we are used to accessing wherever we are and on practically every device we use. But, for some reason, the smartwatch has been stripped of an Internet browser - until today. We're happy to announce that Opera Mini has become the first web browser on a Tizen-based smartwatch, the new Samsung Gear S." Opera claim the browser for the Gear S "includes many touch-friendly features that become extra handy on a smartwatch" Some of the highlight features of the new browser are the website shortcuts that appear as large buttons on Opera Mini's Speed Dial, easy navigation with gesture shortcuts and swipe support for forward and back. The Opera Mini browser also comes with the Smart Page feature that displays links based on the sites visited frequently. The company says, "The Smart Page connects you to your social networks, news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more. You can easily switch between the Smart Page and your Speed Dial by selecting a tab at the top of your screen."
Plastc Replaces Credit Cards For those who are fed up of a jam packed wallet that is next to impossible to coerce from your pocket there is finally an answer. Plastc is a high-tech credit card with an E Ink touchscreen that aims to replace every card and coupon in your wallet. This clever little card which is the size of a normal credit card, connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy, once connected to the app you can add all your different accounts, credit cards, discount cards, and more to it. This essentially removes the need to have any more than one card in your wallet at any time, reducing the bulkiness and inconvenience of your wallet overflowing with cards. The card can hold up to 20 cards simultaneously and you can save an unlimited amount of accounts on the app, this means you can switch accounts at any time if needs be. Plastc can also transform into an ID including your picture and signature so a retailer can check if the card is yours. Plastc works like a normal credit card at the pay point, it comes with Chip and PIN hardware, meaning that it will work worldwide after it receives a firmware update in late 2015. It also has a rewritable magnetic strip that changes every time you switch accounts. The Plastc card is extremely secure with a password on the card itself to unlock it, anyone who would try to access your data would need your smartphone, the card, and passwords for both. The card can also send a notification to your smartphone if you stray too far to avoid loss. If you do lose it or suspect that it’s being used by someone else, you can remotely wipe the card, Plastc will sync up with the Wallet app on your phone and all your accounts will be restored. Plastc says you should get a 30-day battery life from the card and you can recharge it with a wireless charging pad. A built-in light sensor can tell when you place the Plastc Card in your wallet triggering the card to go into sleep mode prolonging the battery life.

HTC Holds Off on Wearable Watch It has been a big year for Smartwatches with Samsung, Motorola, and Apple all unveiling the latest in Smartwatch technology. This leaves HTC, one of the world’s largest mobile phone vendors, remaining quiet on the matter until now. The mobile giants were supposed to unveil a Smartwatch of their own by the end of the year, but rumours began circulating in recent months that the entire project was scrapped. It just so happens that the rumours had some truth to them. HTC isn’t launching a wearable device this year as expected. They wanted to be able to introduce a smartwatch into the budding market, but the company has decided to hold off until next year to discuss its wearable strategy instead. “We had originally planned to have a wearable launch in this time frame,” HTC’s Jason Mackenzie commented. “It ended up just not being ready.” Drew Bamford, the head of the team behind HTC’s future wearables, wants to make sure his company’s device is actually worth wearing, unlike many of the wearables that have been released in recent months.
iPhone Fever Thousands of Apple fans stormed Regent Street as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went on sale with record crowds and record sales proving that popularity in Apple iPhone handsets shows no signs of slowing down. It was revealed that over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus phones were sold in the first 72 hours of being released in various countries around the world. This is up a million on the 5s and 5c a year ago. A massive 4 million of those were pre-orders which is twice the original iPhone 5. “Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend,” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook. “While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.” Scenes outside Apple’s UK flagship store in London’s Regent Street on the opening day showed off Apple’s seven-year success story in the Smartphone market.
Parrot To Launch New Zik Headphones Mobile headset firm Parrot has partnered up with French designer Phillipe Starck for
the second time on its Zik 2.0 headphones, which are due to be available in November. Starck is famous for his design work in architecture and interior design, most notably designing a yacht for late Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The headphones, which are a second instalment in the Zik headphones range, come in six colours: black, white, mocha, blue, orange and yellow. Zik 2.0 comes with a capacitive command system that allows users to toggle volume settings, skip songs and answer incoming calls with just one finger. It also has text-to-speech capability which can speak the name of an incoming caller and the ability to make outbound calls when connected with a smartphone.
O2 & Vodafone Eco-Rating System O2 and Vodafone plan to launch an eco-rating system for devices within their range. Eco Rating 2.0 provides a score from zero to five for devices based on manufacturers’ answers to a range of questions, which cover information on the lifecycle of devices, responsible design features and manufacturing choices. Further questions evaluate the material composition of the devices, efficiency of their transport, longevity and ways they enable more sustainable lifestyles. Some manufacturers and network providers have reported the social and environmental impacts of devices but the lack of comparability between the independent approaches has prevented consumers from comparing one mobile against another. O2 head of sustainability Bill Eyres said: “We see Eco Rating 2.0 as the first step in the journey towards an industry standard, building on the pioneering work we carried out with Forum for the Future to bring this innovation to market in 2010. We believe this kind of product transparency will ultimately help empower consumers to make more informed and greener choices.”
Smart Wearable Sales to Quadruple Wearable device sales are predicted to quadruple from 27 million this year to 116 million in 2017, according to a report from juniper research. The prediction goes further to suggest that by 2017 less than 5% of all smartphone will be used with a smart wearable device. The report also states that the market for fitness specific Smart watches will be severally damaged by the wave of Smart watch devices that can carry out the same functions. The report suggests that fitness devices that also offer notifications, such as the Samsung Gear Fit and Razer Nabu could assimilate Smart watch sales, predicting that it will not be until 2017
when Smart watches will be used more than fitness wearables. Juniper also claims that the decline in technological barriers will see larger market players focus on software, such as data banks and operating systems.
European airlines given green light for in-flight mobile calls The turning off of all of portable electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops etc) during flights may be a thing of the past after The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said there were no longer any restrictions on the use of PEDs on flights. Passengers travelling on European airlines could soon be allowed to use their mobile phones after their usage was cleared by airline authorities but whether passengers can make inflight calls will be at the discretion of individual airlines. “It is up to each airline to decide to allow the use of PEDs. In order to do this, the airline will have to go through an assessment process, ensuring aircraft systems are not affected in any way by the transmission signals from the PEDs,” the EASA said in a statement. ”For this reason, there may be differences among airlines whether and when PEDs can be used. Passengers must at all times follow the airline crew instructions. Safety always comes first on-board of an aircraft.”
HTC's First Camera HTC has launched its first ever standalone camera and surprisingly it has no screen or viewfinder of any kind. This is an effort for you to actively take part in and enjoy the activity you are recording and not miss out on the important bits while staring at a screen. The HTC RE camera has a grand total of two buttons, the big silver one on the back is the capture button, press it once to snap a still photo, press and hold to record video, the gadget emits an audible cue so you know what you're doing. All photos and footage are saved to the 8GB microSD card that comes with the camera. HTC makes up for the lack of viewfinder or screen by giving the RE an extremely wide-angle lens which is able to capture imagery within a 146-degree field of view. It handles focus by zeroing in on the closest object. The Re doesn't have an "on" switch, instead HTC built a capacitive layer into the handle of the camera so when you touch it, it immediately comes out of standby mode. It also comes alive if you press the capture button (useful if you're wearing gloves) and the exterior of the camera is water-resistant.

Sennheiser Urbanite Anthony Molloy – Manager of HMV Henry Street
What product are you reviewing? Sennheiser Urbanite Headphones What are your favourite features? The sound quality is excellent, you can feel a real depth to the music. The style is also very distinct and the over ear cups are very soft and comfortable What are your least favourite features? Despite the large cushion on your ears you are still aware that you are wearing large headphones due to the weight What do you think of the look and feel of the product? The overall feel is very sturdy without compromising the stylish look. In fact whilst wearing them I had several compliments and requests to know where to get them. I also love the unique feel and touch of the headband! What do you think of the product performance? Being a music nerd I tested the Urbanites with the new Aphex twin
album, an artist who is famous for his attention to sound and it’s most intricate details. These headphones definitely helped me get the most out of the album and appreciate the quality of the production. One of the main strengths of the headphones is that you can hear the detail within the music you are listening to and this is due to the headphones high quality sound definition
get through design without adding additional batteries. All of the above and the added fact that they are also very comfortable to wear confirms that they are most definitely value! Would you recommend the product? I already have more than once!
Is there anything you would change or enhance? There is a space of about an inch and half between the headband and the wearers head (above the ears), making you feel self-conscious at times. Other Headphones often bring the ear cups in at an angle to counter this, this is however only a small detail Do you think the product was value for money? The overall look, feel and sound quality definitely make the Urbanites value for money! In fact the sound quality is so good that it’s probably as close to noise cancelling as you can PAGE 9

Help is here – Hints and tips Mobile Security According to McAfee, the average user stores €30,000 worth of “digital assets” on our mobile devices including media, professional information and personal correspondence. However many of us don’t protect ourselves as well as we should - 50% of us don’t even use a lock code! Poor phone security leaves our sensitive/personal information including photos, videos, online login details, banking information and work files vulnerable. If this information is not adequately protected a 3rd party could gain access to your data and the services you use on your phone. Intel recommend the following steps to keep your mobile phone secure: 1. Use a lock code 2. Only install apps from trusted App stores or Developers 3. Back up your data 4. Keep your phone updated with the most recent software and security updates 5. Don’t hack or jailbreak your device as this can open up security flaws 6. Always log out of banking and shopping sites and only use these on trusted Wi-Fi networks 7. Turn off Wi-Fi, location services and Bluetooth when not in use 8. Avoid texting or emailing personal information 9. Don’t open links/attachments from unsolicited emails
