(1) Green cells are user-editable input fields. (2) If CNG fuel economy is not known, assume 10-25% lower fuel economy than diesel truck (3) Price estimates can be obtained from www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/price_report.html (4) See tab CNG COSTS for source of CNG pricing. (5) To convert $/gasoline gallon equivalent to $/diesel gallon equivalent, multiply GGE price by 1.11 (6) If the calculation uses the CNG price built up from components on the CNG COST tab, the calculator will automatically zero out the station costs in these cells, since the CNG COST price already includes station cost amortization. (7) Estimate based on "Business Case for Compressed Natural Gas in Municipal Fleets", NREL 2010 (8) For life cycle cost differentials, cost savings for the project are highlighted in green, while instances of cost increases for CNG are highlighted in red

NATURAL GAS TRUCK COST CALCULATOR
v3 (June 22, 2012)
NATURAL GAS PRICE CALCULATOR FOR ONSITE CNG STATION The information below illustrates the buildup of CNG pump prices from various components - this information is of use to fleets building their own infrastructure. Fleets purchasing fuel from an external public or private station can enter the price that station offers as an alternative to this calculation. CHOICE OF MANUAL ENTRY OF CNG PRICE Use Calculated Fuel Price? (Yes/No) Enter fuel price from retail or private station (in $/diesel gallon equivalent) Fuel price to use for calculations COMPONENTS OF CNG COST (1) Gas Commodity Price of wellhead gas ($/million BTU) (2) Price of wellhead gas ($/GGE) Transportation to meter ($/GGE) (2) Electric Compression Costs Fleet cost for electricity ($ per kWh) Cost to compress natural gas ($/GGE) Maintenance and Repair of Station Maintenance and repair costs ($/GGE) Amortization of Station Equipment Cost to amortize station equipment ($/GGE) Federal and State Taxes (if applicable) Federal Tax ($/gge) State Tax ($/gge) Total Fuel Cost Gas Commodity Compression Maintenance Equipment Amortization Taxes Total ($/GGE) Total ($/DGE)

$2,39 (Henry Hub price, available daily at http://www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/ng_pri_fut_s1_d.htm) $0,30 $0,20 (ranges from $.20 to $.40 per GGE) $0,10 (ranges from $.04 to $.30 per kWh) $0,10 assumes 1 kWh electricity to compress 1 GGE $0,50 (ranges from $.30 to $.75 per GGE) $0,60 (calculated by total cost of station divided by throughput over lifetime of station, range of $.35-$.65) $0,18 $0,00 (CNG exempt from NY state excise tax until September 1, 2012, after which it would be $.44) $0,50 $0,10 $0,50 $0,60 $0,18 $1,88 $2,09 (assumes conversion of 124,800 BTU per GGE and 138,700 BTU per DGE)
NOTES (1) Natural gas price buildup logic and ranges are from NGVAmerica, "The Compelling Case for NGVs in Public and Private Fleets", 2012 (2) Price of wellhead gas and transportation to meter may be in $ per therm: to convert to $/million BTU, multiply $/therm by 10

ASSUMPTIONS AND ADDITIONAL NOTES
1/ Cost calculations in the calculator do not account for the time value of money - it is recommended that the user consu a financial advisor or his/her company's accounting/finance department before committing to a natural gas program to conduct more complex financial modeling. The intent of the calculator is to provide an initial decision making tool. 2/ For cases where a fleet will build its own refueling station, this calculator assumes the station asset will need to be com amortized over the lifetime of the fleet vehicles using it. 3/ For cases where a fleet will build its own refueling station, operations and maintenance costs for the station are assum accounted for in the price of the natural gas as delivered to the vehicle. 4/ Vehicle maintenance costs for diesel and natural gas vehicles are assumed to be equivalent on a per-mile basis: some indicate that natural gas vehicles may have a maintenance cost benefit that would improve the financial performance of the project. 5/ Vehicle resale is not accounted for in this analysis. 6/ Life cycle costs included in this analysis include vehicle capital costs, refueling station capital costs (where applicable vehicle operational costs (fuel costs).
