HMNS KNIGHTS
Opens to Members only November 17 - 19 Opens to Public November 20
On display is armor used for personal protection by knights, as well as for their horses. In certain cases, arms and armor served to reflect high social status. The majority of arms manufacturers were artisans that worked in metal, and their ranks also included great goldsmiths. Along with gilded bronze, widely used for decorative purposes were gold, silver, porcelain and precious woods. The full harness of plate armor in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance was a complex assembly of about 12-14 components made of
Florence, Italy. Local support is provided by The Hamill Foundation. It is on display from November 17, 2017 through May 13, 2018 on the 3rd floor of the Dan L Duncan Wing. Members receive reduced admission.
Offensive weapons are also on display. These include swords, pole arms, clubs, maces, war hammers battle axes and a type of dagger, known as a five-finger-dagger or “cinquedea.” All of these weapons could penetrate plate armor in the close-quarters combat that followed cavalry charges. They evolved as plate armor became increasingly impervious to slashing weapons, such as swords. One could say they made a greater impact.
November 17 - 19 Details on page 2.
Many of us might not realize that medieval knights made it to the Americas. We know them as Conquistadors, and one of their helmets is on display. Knights was organized by Contemporanea Progetti in collaboration with the Museo Stibbert,

well-tempered steel weighing over 30 pounds. One might be amazed to learn that one remained highly agile and could jump, run and otherwise move freely as the weight of the armor was spread evenly throughout the body. The exhibit will demonstrate how this worked.

HMNS WIESS ENERGY HALL
Mesmerizing! Unbelievable! Revolutionary! These are only a few of the superlatives used by visitors and the media in describing the Museum’s new Wiess Energy Hall. After years of planning and construction, the tremendous amount of effort and attention to detail has finally paid off. This new permanent exhibition hall is ready to energize you.
ENERGY CITY Completely new experiences include Energy City, a 2,200-square-foot, 1/150th-scale landscape with nine different energy sources highlighted to showcase the energy value chain, and demonstrate that together, these sources can sustain a city that looks a lot like Houston! What makes this exhibit so spectacular is the integration of animation, projection mapping technology and physical elements, which allow visitors to follow trains, trucks, cars, boats, and airplanes moving throughout the landscape.

DRILLING RIG The moment the elevator doors open on the Museum’s fourth floor, visitors are transported to the deck of a working offshore drilling rig. They step onto the floating platform where the sight of waves on the horizon, the sound of helicopters dropping off crew, and the movement of the automated drilling equipment all contribute to the authenticity of the experience. GEOVATOR Previous Wiess Energy Hall favorites are back in all-new formats. For example, the venerable Geovator, with its longtime host Captain Mercaptan, again takes visitors down into the earth, but on a completely reimagined journey— with larger screens and enhanced motion effects. Visitors survey the rock strata beneath Houston, and possibly encounter menacing dinosaurs and survive a massive meteor strike. Be prepared for surprises!
EFX3000
FUELING THE ENERGY HALL
Another immersive motion-platform experience is the Eagle Ford Shale Experience, also known as the EFX3000. In this conveyance, visitors are “shrunk” to microscopic size and injected down the borehole of a freshly drilled well, leveling out to traverse thousands of feet horizontally. Once in the target shale formation, experience a hydraulic fracturing operation from inside the well in EFX3000 style.

LECTURE & TOUR “Inauguration of Wiess Energy Hall 3.0“ Paul Bernhard, Exhibit Designer Tuesday, November 21, 6:30 p.m. The largest and most technical innovative energy display in the world, the third installation of the Wiess Energy Hall is a look at energy like no other. Lead exhibit designer Paul Bernhard will overview of the project with colorful behind-the-scenes stories of the planning and installation process. Following the presentation and Q&A, all are invited on a tour of the Wiess Energy Hall. DISTINGUISHED LECTURE “The Global Energy Scene: Some things you might not read in the ‘Times’" Scott Tinker, Ph.D. Bureau of Economic Geology Tuesday, November 28, 7 p.m. Over the past few decades, a story of "good" and "bad" energy has evolved: renewable good, fossil and nuclear bad. School kids are taught
"facts" about energy that sometimes violate economic and even physical principles. Passionate online voices, and even national newspapers, present "ideal world" opinions without fully understanding the upsides and downsides of those scenarios. Dr. Scott Tinker of the Bureau of Economic Geology will present a few global-energy realities that you are unlikely to read in the "Times" and pose a few questions whose answers might challenge what you think you know. As Mark Twain is credited with saying, "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so." As the United States considers its position in energy, it is vital to understand the actual facts, real costs and benefits, and true global implications of various policies in order
to minimize politics and maximize lasting impact. Tinker will review the considerations—from climate and carbon, to poverty and immigration, to renewable energy and reregulation of electricity markets. SHELL EDUCATORS’ PREVIEW Tuesday, November 28, 4 - 7 p.m. Preview the new permanent Wiess Energy Hall and the special exhibition Knights (page 6). See registration info on page 24. BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOUR Wednesday, January 3, 6 p.m. Master energy docents will guide you through the new Wiess Energy Hall highlighting the items you shouldn’t miss on a visit to this new permanent exhibition hall.

LECTURE & EXHIBIT TOUR “Rails Around Houston – History of Our Railroad Town” Douglas L. Weiskopf, Historian Wednesday, December 6, 6:30 p.m. Several railroads were chartered by the Republic of Texas, and the first line built was the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado, which began construction near the Port of Houston Turning Basin in 1851. By the time Spindletop blew in 1901, Houston was such a transportation hub that it became the heart of the petrochemical industry. For many years, the chamber of commerce proudly proclaimed that Houston was the place “where seventeen railroads meet the sea.” Historian Douglas L. Weiskopf will detail Houston’s history by way of the railroad. Following Weiskopf’s presentation, the Trains Over Texas exhibition will be introduced by Glen Rosenbaum and David Temple and all will be invited to experience the miniature grandeur. A book signing of Rails Around Houston will also be offered.

CULTURAL FEAST www.hmns.org/feasts
“Mapping the Culinary Roots of Texas” Hosted at Cafe Annie Tuesday, November 7, 7 p.m. This evening legendary Chef Robert Del Grande and culinary historian Merrianne Timko will trace the culinary history of dining in the Lone Star State. Our colorful menu will be matched by equally vibrant tales of how the featured spices, foods and drinks made their way to Texas tables. No less would be expected for this flavorful journey of “the six forks over Texas.”

In addition to being works of art, the rare maps on display in Mapping Texas: From Frontier to the Lone Star State are representative of history, geography and technology.
Texas-Size Maps of Texas
The first group of maps in the exhibition depict the expanding knowledge of the interior of what was to become the United States with increasing accuracy along the coast.
Adapted from an article by Nancy Fischer, Janet Combes and Inda Immega from the Spring 2017 Dashing Diplodocus. A publication of the HMNS Volunteer Guild.
Western Expansion 1763-1848
More than forty rare maps are on display together for the first time in Mapping Texas: From Frontier to the Lone Star State—many on public view for the first time ever. This special exhibition is organized by the Texas General Land Office with special thanks to Frank and Carol Holcomb.
These unique maps show us how knowledge of the landscape continues to grow, as do advances in navigational and surveying understanding and technology. Republic of the Lone Star State 1837-1880 Maps depicting the first documentation of Texas as a nation and member of the United States include two maps by Jacob de Cordova. The 1849 map inset shows Texas extending to Wyoming. In the 1850 map inset, the Texas border stops at the 36°30’ parallel.
Additional lenders to the exhibition are the Witte Museum in San Antonio and the Bryan Museum in Galveston. It is on display at HMNS in the Hamill Gallery on the main floor. The exhibit has been extended through January 15, 2018. Admission is free for Members.
Whether your Texas lineage goes back to an Austin colonist or an even earlier pioneer, or you are just interested in colorful Texas history, join genealogy researcher Lynna Kay Shuffield for an entertaining look at Texas genealogy. From Personal Time, Earth Time and Star Time, to Cosmic Time
H M N S B U R K E B A K E R P L A N E TA R I U M
Most planetarium programs are space shows, taking you to the sun, planets, galaxies, black holes, even exploring dark matter and dark energy. A time show is fundamentally different. It’s more personal—grounded in the human experience, which defines our perception of time’s passage. Clocks tick inside your brain and extend to your inventions, from sundials to star patterns, monuments, pyramids, even modern atomic clocks that will not lose a second in 15 billion years—clocks so sensitive that they can detect the slowing caused by living in a high-rise building or a mountaintop. Our awareness of time grows from our understanding of the past. Whispers of cosmic time echo in the iron in our blood, in meteorite inclusions older than Earth, and in the cosmic background radiation surrounding us. The evolution of Earth life may be our best predictor of future alien companionship.
www.hmns.org/planetarium
18
A story of time connects events in ways never done in any planetarium show before—providing experiences through which the past flows into tomorrow. Space shows extend from the planet Earth. Tales of a Time Traveler flows from museum artifact time capsules to the ultimate questions about our past and future. As your guide through all of time, David Tennant, the 10th Doctor in the Dr. Who series, carries his “Doctor” persona far beyond the journeys of his time machine to the shared experiences of all humanity.

Winter constellations dominate the evening skies—Orion the Hunter, Taurus the Bull and Canis Major the Dog. Orion has the magnificent nebula located at the tip of his sword and contains the two bright stars Betelgeuse and Rigel. Betelgeuse is a red supergiant that is 20 times as massive as our Sun! The bright open cluster “The Pleiades,” also known as the Seven Sisters, can be seen above the bull’s head. Sirius the brightest star in the night sky, is viewed in the constellation Canis Major. Andromeda, Pegasus, Cygnus and Cassiopeia are populated with open clusters, nebulas and galaxies. All of these objects can be viewed through the George Observatory telescopes.
