100 years of tourism is a diploma project at Osaka Institute of Technology I was born and raised in this town. I went to tomonoura on my field survey and workshop that covers 5 parts ideas . First , I analyze through 5 layers , geomorphy , sea, block, structures [1]. With the analysis , I realized the area is composed of industries ; tourism , dried product , fishery [2]. those three industries are marked blue on original master plan [3] .Second , I surveyed the site and considered traditional old streets as a positive aspect [yellow,4] and frequent traffic jams and collapsing houses as a negative aspect [red ,4,5] . Finally , I propose a complex & multistory parking lots at different sites and a new sea route that connects those two sites [a broken line,3]. 05

2 . Collapsing house Fishery Relief

Proposal 2

Architectural proposal : Gate & Culuture complex Proposal 1 , Taking in the flow of tourist’s cars . And conducting people to new port . It will be a tour start point . Proposal 2 , The new facade of this town .They are floating buildings that will replace the place existing old houses [Machiya] . In the future , it’ll be a new attractive townscape .

The project’ s Theme

The day a city loses its value There are many historic townscape in Japan . Recently in Japan , I think that the number of imitation architecture or buildings is increasing . This problem is so serious that I can't ignore it. Japanese historic townscape will be filled with imitation structure & facade . So , It’ ll become worthless urban landscape .

70%

Majority of tourists visit this town by car .

25%

There isn’t a train line . 25% of tourists have to get on the bus from The trainstation .

5%

Ships come from a nearby port [Onomichi] .

In the past this area flourished as a Trade port PAST A

1970

People stated to consider the concept of preservating the historical townscape .

Increase urban values .

2015

2065

There are paper decorations -like buildings [=imitation]. It is built purely for tourism . FUTURE A

Imitation buildings needs many improvements from here on out.

Harmonize the 3 functions

3-1 . Organize the existing scenes

Artist-in-residence

Public bath

Now , Artists make a comunity only in Artists . So , I considered to mix with an action of necessary for life . For example , eating ,having a bath . So that , they can have a relationship with various people .

Since Public bath has begun to suffer from a shortage of successors , The number of public bathes have been decreasing year by year . In Japan , it is a serious theme . We must change way of administration .
