HOUSTON METHODIST SUGAR LAND HOSPITAL

NEUROSCIENCE AND SPINAL DISORDERS SYMPOSIUM

Program Overview Neurological and spinal disorders are highly prevalent among the adult population and cause significant morbidity and mortality. Although there have been tremendous advances in neuroscience knowledge and technology in recent years, many patients still do not receive evidence-based care. Significant disparities in care and outcomes persist among racial and ethnic groups as well as across geographic regions. This course reviews pathophysiology, patient presentation and treatment options for the most common neurological and spinal disorders. Multidisciplinary faculty will describe the history and physical examination, diagnostic testing, pharmacological management, interventional therapies, and surgical options.

Target Audience This program is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals with an interest in neurological and spinal diseases and disorders. Educational Objectives • Evaluate and utilize current screening, diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients presenting with neurological diseases and disorders. • Identify essential components of the history and physical examination for patients presenting with neurological and spinal conditions. • Apply new findings from the medical literature to determine when referral for specialist evaluation and management is warranted. • Describe a variety of neurointerventional procedures, interventional pain management procedures, and surgical procedures, including their roles in treating neurological and spinal disorders. • Address the legal and ethical challenges that arise with end-of-life care physicians believe to be futile but which surrogate decision makers demand for the patient. • Identify patients for whom referral to pain psychology, opioid-use disorder treatment, or physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy is indicated. Accreditation and Credit Designation Statement Houston Methodist is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Houston Methodist designates this live activity for a maximum of 13.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Houston Methodist designates this activity for 2 hours of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

Educational Methods Didactic lectures and panel discussions. Evaluation Evaluation by online questionnaire will address program content, presentation and possible commercial bias.
