WE LC OM E Everything we do is strange … but this is who we are. I established Design by Us in 1999 as a playground for imaginative and untraditional approaches to how lighting and interior designs should be created. Today, we have our own design vocabulary and our inspiration is derived from fashion and fantasy along with a great dose of humor and curiosity. SO, IF YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE – you are probably down with us. We move in the borderland between function and decoration. Too much, some would say, but this is exactly what our mantra is all about. We have created an illusion of exceeding decadence to challenge the intuitive perception of interior design. We are not a “less is more” kinda design studio – we only do “More is More”. We want you to be the rock star you always dreamt about becoming. Even though we are a Danish design studio and it would be a slam dunk to use light and muted colors and shapes – we have gone in the direct opposite direction – that is just what we do. Our source of inspiration is multidimensional and maybe that is why we are not easily defined. We salute the entrepreneurial spirit and the idea of following the desire to create. FA S H I O N & FA N TA S Y Design by Us is all about Fashion & Fantasy. From the very beginning, our designs have always been inspired by the catwalk. The fashion industry is bold and expressive and this is a great inspiration when developing designs in Design by Us. “The fashion industry has always been two to three years ahead of the furniture industry, so if you can decode the trends there, you’ll be at the forefront. Design by Us is all about challenging your perception of design – turn the obvious upside down and twist it. Like a Rhapsody, we mix interior design with fashion and fantasy. We design, create and customize – We define the universe of design by combining forms, content and colors into the unique expressions of Design by Us. We offer you the freedom to be bold and daring.

A M ATC H M A D E I N H E AV E N - It is what one can call a design collaboration between the crystal experts Reflections Copenhagen and Design by Us, who have many years of experience in decorative lighting. The two design companies have put their creative forces together and created this unique lamp series, CARNIVAL. A festive parade consisting of four handmade crystal suspensions and a decadent table lamp. ”We have played with the thought of a magical collab for long, and now it finally happens. Our design expression is a perfect match”, says Julie Hugau and Andrea Larsson about the collaboration between Reflections Copenhagen and Design by Us. ”The Carnival collection is a collection on the move, an explosion of colors and a tribute to daring! – This is how we are as people and as brands”, adds Rasmus Larsson. In an explosion of color combinations, a bold variation of patterns and sharp cut crystal. The lamp series is struggling between decadence and total theater. A lamp series that pushes the norms and seduces its public with the crystal’s magical reflections.

H A R D TO R E S I S T It has always been hard to resist a great design and that is also the case here. This is why our new table series is named Hard to Resist. The base is made of matte powder coated casted iron and the table top is marble with white notes. The tabletop can be customized and is also available in solid oak or leather covered wood. WA N T E D P E N D A N T We named this lampseries Wanted because it just is. The alluring gold sets the mood of something you just have to have. The light is bended into a warm feeling due to the round shape of the lamp shade. Wanted is available in a wall or ceiling mounted lamp and two sizes of pendants.

MARBLE ART The marble art lamp is an elegant lamp providing a direct down light. The body is a smooth polished marble cylinder with gold suspension. Each lamp has a unique pattern due to the nature of the marble stone thus the name; Marble Art. This is not just an ordinary downlight. SHAHIN The Shahin lamp is our take on the clean classic white pendant and table lamp. We have mixed the most popular elements of lighting into one by using glass and polished brass. With a feminine ease the light is floating from the core of the lamp and sheds a soft diffuse light. Body and structure in polished brass. Equipped with white textile covered cord and hidden wire. PA R I S 1920 As you probably have figured out Design By Us has a weakness for playing with the beauty of lighting. This pendant has been on its way for a long time but finally we are able to present it. Paris 1920 is made of opal colored rippled glass with a black base. A N Y T H I N G B U T LO W K E Y Rasmus Larsson, designer and creator of Design by Us, lives in a small town close to the sea north of Copenhagen together with his wife, who is also a renowned designer and their 3 children.

he house is a classical Scandinavian 50’ villa, which has been remodelled to fit a modern family of 5. The family has furnished the house with their own designs combined with art and other treasures which make their home very personal. “My house is filled with things that have a history of some sort. I love colors and also quirky things – I am definitely not into

mainstream and beige colors. My favorite room in the house is the kitchen and living room area – this is the heart of the house where everything happens; you can cook and take a nap on the couch at the same time – it is brilliant” I am not tip toeing through life and my home reflects that. I am into designs and items that have a story to tell. That is one of my mantras.

fter having graduated from the Design School, Rasmus found an old run-down machine shop in Copenhagen Nordvest, he sprayed everything white inside and named his newly started design company: Design by Us. “I have always been very busy creating something,” Rasmus Larsson says. Rasmus spent a lot of his time in his father’s workshop, and already from a young age Rasmus Larsson began experimenting with painting and welding. “I made all sorts of iron furniture, iron lamps, wooden dressers, you name it” he says.

“It’s just more exciting if things have an edge instead of being standardized. Not a single one of our designs has been created by saying: ‘What is the market in demand for?’ I clearly believe our secret is our changeability and interest in working with new materials and new forms in an unpretentious way.” We have created an illusion of exceeding decadence to challenge the intuitive perception of interior design. We want our designs to be recognizable anywhere you see it. That is what we do – and we are good at it!

The feminine Shahin table lamp is placed on a black marble plate. The feminine and masculine is complementing each other. The Crazy Flamingo lamp is placed behind the colorful crystal table which is designed by Rasmus’s wife Andrea.

ABOUT NORDVEST by Rikke Schradieck

his is our part of town and we are proud of it. North west. This is the name of a Copenhagen district that has had a very changeable life over the years. Once it was the home of factories, auto services and other workshops, but when larger scale factories took over, this area was associated with a social downturn where the streets were dilapidated with ghostly old factories, small houses and worn out residential buildings in one strange confusion. In just 15 years this hood has experienced a great turn around. This unique neighborhood is now in high demand. The streets that once were the home of the hardworking men and

women, then petty criminals, who found their way to this abandoned neighborhood so close to Copenhagen are now used by all kinds of people – from royalties to rookies and rockstars. Now, the factories are occupied by smart businesses, galleries, designers and cafes. But the history can still be felt and has given both the neighborhood and the architecture a touch of something special. The potency is great. The mix of the old industrial expressions and the potential new architectural gems create a Copenhagen pendulum for districts such as Soho in London and Tribeca in New York. There is no doubt about it, this is “The place to be”- and of course we are.

The first thing that hits you is the amazing scent of freshly roasted coffee and when you see the large coffee roaster and a desk filled with coffeemaking machines of all sorts, you are not in doubt – this place is serious about their coffeemaking. The owners of the best coffeehouse in North West are the coffee connoisseurs Simon & Said. Their love for and knowledge about coffee is almost infinite. The two friends have each more that 20 years of experience roasting and grinding coffee. As Simon puts it, “It’s okay, you can call me a coffee nerd”.

They have combined their passion with their professional life and the idea to open Kaffedepartementet in 2016 was the sincere feeling of doing something that makes sense to oneself. Their raison de être is to develop the culture around coffee from just being a current commodity to an experience of superior craftmanship. And they have succeeded.

“Coffee, as we know it, has only been cultivated for about 100 years and the potential of the coffee bean has probably not even been revealed yet.” Simon points out.

T E K N O E AT E R Y A metropol for the food cultures of Nordvest This newly opened eatery is located almost next door to Design By Us. And the two companies are related as Tekno is owned by Rasmus Larssons’ son Sylvester Larsson and brother in law, Frederik Møller.

hese two enthusiastic guys are living their dream and have opened a restaurant based on three very comprehensible principles: Local is Hero, Independency and Social dining “We want to support our local community – we buy our raw materials from local manufacturers. We do not want to be subject to large commercial companies, our identity is based on our independence and our suppliers are curated by us” Says Sylvester and Frederik continues ”We want to bring people together by challenging the way we use restaurants today.

That is also why we named our place “Eatery”. We want our customers to gather around a meal prepared by our great chefs – it is as simple as that.” We will be serving specialities from our neighborhood. And since Nordvest is also the home of many different nationalities, we experience a great diversity in food and culture. This gives us countless opportunities to surprise and enlighten our guests about all the exciting things that are going on when all sorts of food cultures come together.

3 D AY S O F D E S I G N 2020 Design by Us is located in the unpolished district of Copenhagen, Nordvest. As an entirely new initiative, the district is included in the great Danish design event ‘3daysofdesign’, which exhibits Danish design through a 3 days design celebration in Copenhagen. The new district will go by the name of ‘North West Side Stories’ where Design by Us will attend with a spectacular exhibition. North West Side Stories (NWSS) is a creative and vibrant concept that ties the Nordvest district together with the rest of the design event ‘3daysofdesign’ and creates a unifying concept around the new, upcoming area. NWSS is established in close collaboration with 3daysofdesign. Behind the initiative are Malene Marie Møller and Camilla Høeg, owners of the visual content agency HØEG+MØLLER. With NWSS, Malene and Camilla will create a design event in the Nordvest that will seriously place the area on Copenhagen’s design map, and as a must see when the aesthetic senses

must be challenged and inspiration must be found. NWSS combines local brands in the Nordvest with curated exhibitions with other design brands and craftsmen from all over Denmark. NWSS will offer beautiful, quirky and innovative exhibitions - small and large. Here, new relationships and possible collaborations will arise as HØEG+MØLLER unites brands across cultures, products and design expressions. 3daysofdesign and NWSS will take place from the 14th -16th of May 2020

he original vintage lamp only contains the finest vintage glasses. We handpick the glass from flea markets and old glass factories across Europe. This lamp actually also adheres to the principle of upcyclability as we transform the vintage glasses into a beautiful lamp that will be enjoyed for many years to come. All handcrafting and assembling are made in Denmark. The shade is also handmade in our Shade Salon. The Vintage Lamp is making a stronger appearance each year and the expression of the lamp never stops surprising you. Not two lamps are made alike which makes it quite unique – it just keeps evolving.

T H E H O U S E O F M ATC H I N G CO LO R S Casper Bach, sales director in Design by Us, lives close to Copenhagen in a very nice villa from 1924. It has been respectfully renovated and updated in adherence with the contemporary charm of the 20’s.

t home with Casper, things must be balanced in relation to color and functionality. The interior design is a matter of matching designs that together bring out the best in each other. The first thing you notice in the interior is the rigorous adherence to an interior design concept of “Fifty shades of grey”. This tone in tone décor offers a calm and stress less atmosphere – a space where

you feel relaxed and able to recharge. This means a lot to Casper who often is on the road abroad spreading the message about Design by Us worldwide. “I have surrounded myself with furniture and items that mean something to me and fit into the bigger picture of our interior design. I like to keep things simple – Life is too short not to enjoy – give me a nice chair, my guitar and a packet of cigarillos and I am satisfied.”

The concept of black, gray and white elements prevails in this home where Caper lives with his lovely wife, 3 kids and the black cat named Jack. One may think that the monochrome décor stands in contrast with the colorful universe of Design by Us, but nevertheless Casper has decorated lots of Design by Us items. “Design by Us will fit in anywhere no matter if you live like me or with an endless palette of colors”.

CRAZY FLAMINGO

BALLROOM The Ballroom lamp was designed in 2014 and it quickly became one of our most popular designs. This lamp is like a chameleon that fits into all environments and therefore we love it. The shape and the many colors to choose from makes it a favorite everywhere. The Ballroom lamp series has been expanded with a table lamp and a floor lamp. Still with the well-known mouthblown glass dome, in 6 colors, but now with a streamlined foot in gold or black. Ballroom, dia 20 cm.

BELLIS The initial idea to the Bellis lamp series comes from a dream of an entire series of lamps with a raw, yet elegant and simple expression. The shape of the lamp is inspired by an old fashioned bell - hence the name Bellis. Bellis, h31x w16 x d30 cm.

HARAKIRI Harakiri is an aesthetic series of lamps inspired by the Japanese samurai swords. The shape of the lamp reminds of a sword handle, thus the name. The beautifully rippled glass and simple top with a brushed matte finish creates a clam lighting experience with a sharp expression. POLLISH Pollish is the essence of an evergreen lamp. It is one of the first pendants in our collection and it is still going strong. We are still as fascinated by the lamp as we were when it was designed in 2008. Glass combined with lighting just never goes out of style. Available in 3 sizes. SHEIK ARAB Sheik Arab is inspired by the mystic of the east, and despite the almost royal expression of the lamp it is actually made from reproduced ornament parts from old Arabic oil lamps. Sheik Arab, h100 x dia 40 cm.

NIGHT RIDER Ride all night long! This bold and beautiful lamp adds character to any wall outside – or inside. The rough look made in a classic material – the perfect combination. N E W WAV E O P T I C WA L L The New Wave Optic Wall lamp is a bright example of how our design can create a room by itself. New Wave Optic Wall recognizes the Scandinavian style in its pure simplicity, but when the light is on, it’s all but simple. The surprising effect of the light, when discovering the lamp’s pattern of light on the wall is a new experience in itself. If you want to intensify the pattern on the wall, we have designed Eye Ball - an eye you apply to the lamp for an even more spectacular pattern. This is the wall lamp that can literally make any space seem interesting. The wavy glass has an amazing effect on the light which has a beaming effect on the wall. It is truly an illumination experience and work wonders on any surface.

This small sofa is an excellent example of how Design by Us has added personality to something very classical. Originally it comes with black leather and stained oak legs, but in this case it is upholstered with seagreen velvet.

The Clown stool is inspired by the elevated ring of a circus arena. The functionality of the chair is based on the idea that both your tall and short friends can rest their feet on the ring. Available in 3 sizes; Dining, Kitchen and Barstool. The Lazy bitch is just a great daybed. The design is classic but the carved dark stained oak legs add personality to this one. Originally, it comes with black leather upholestry, but this can easily be customized.

SVETLANA Svetlana is inspired by the old Art Deco velvet chairs. We have given this glamorous chair a graphic expression to simplify it, but with clear notes from the twenties when the voluminous lifestyle flourished freely with sophisticated drinks and tones of jazz.

S K I N N Y B I TC H The Skinny Bitch lounge chair is the perfect mix of femininity and masculinity. The chair gives personality to every interior design. Originally it comes with black leather, but here it is made with burguny colored velvet.

OUR PROJECTS We are a multidisciplinary design studio and we are also specialized in total design solutions and offer complete interior projects for both the residential and the commercial market. We offer guidance within interior and design to create meaning and functional interior. We can customize furniture and lighting concepts to adhere to any concept of hotels, restaurants, offices or housing. Our untraditional and imaginative approach to interior concepts, furniture and lighting create its own design vocabulary, which has become the trademark for our designs.

BINGS Office hotel, Copenhagen The challenge was to design a large office hotel for multiple businesses. There was a desire to establish common areas for the people and companies to meet for networking and to create a synergy among the companies. In this way one would get more out of Bings than just renting an office space. We created meeting environments and made it intimate with glass walls, curtains and plants and named these areas greenhouses. Bartending co-owner, Ted Dako, has won the Danish Championships of cocktails two years in a row, and he will make sure that you have a good time and some tasty cocktails in Puss Puss. All cocktails are made with crystal clear ice, fresh ingredients and high quality spirits. Puss Puss means “kiss kiss” in Swedish and is a phrase used when saying good bye to someone you love. The bar was named that because Frankie (co-owner) made fun of Ted (co-owner) when he said it to his family members. Who is Ted? Ted Dako is the Head bartender at Puss Puss. He has a huge passion for the combination of

flavors, aromas, ingredients and spirits. Ted is originally from Sweden, but his great passion made him move to one of the world’s most influential cocktail cities: Copenhagen, where he has worked as a bartender at several of the city’s most popular cocktail bars. In 2015 he won the world’s largest and most prestigious cocktail competition, Diageo World Class, and in 2016 he won the official Danish Championship in Classic Cocktail, where he competed against 56 of Denmark’s most skilled bartenders. Today he is the proud owner of the quality conscious, experimental and cozy cocktail bar PUSS PUSS together with his business partner Frankie de Franca.

OH DEER ... “It is the small detail that makes the big difference between whether you are ordinary or non-ordinary.” This chair emphasizes how we customize our furniture and play with words at the same time. The name: ‘Oh Deer’ came about because the theme of the fabric is a forest. Our upholstery salon is our playground and here we experiment with fabrics and designs.

S U S TA I N A B L E B I TC H We are aware of the climate crisis and strive to act with responsibility. That is also why we have upholstered our all-time favorite dining chair with recycled wool. All our furniture can be upholstered with recycled fabrics. The only limit is your imagination. We see our designs as long-lasting items in the sense that we make high-end designs and do not support the so-called “use and throw away” culture. We expect that our designs last for a long time. We have made a large collection of LED lightbulbs to save the electricity and are aware of the fact that also small actions also make a difference in the long run. When it comes to the everyday life in Design by Us we are using recyclable materials whenever we can and it makes sense, we reuse our packing materials and we sort our waste.
