MARK SUMMERS Forty-three men have held the highest office in the United States, making up an exclusive club of statesmen and sinners, grinds and slackers, winners and losers, Boy Scouts and rogues. They are profiled in incisive and entertaining commentaries, written by Vanity Fair contributors Judy Bachrach, David Friend, David Kamp, Todd S. Purdum, and Jim Windolf, that tell of their deeds, plumb their characters, and dispense the essential dish about their personal lives. Portraits newly drawn by the acclaimed artist Mark Summers illuminate each of them as vivid individuals. Also included: revealing remarks—in the presidents’ own words—showing what each really thought about the man who preceded him in the Oval Office, an introduction by Graydon Carter, and a foreword by Washington insider Todd S. Purdum. From George Washington to Barack Obama, here is a memorable chronicle of America’s, and the world’s, most powerful men, combining history, biography, art, politics, and gossip—and covering international affairs, domestic affairs, and . . . affairs of the heart—in one small, indispensable volume.

Pop Touched Me The Art of Rob Pruitt By Rob Pruitt Pop Touched Me: The Art of Rob Pruitt charts the highs and lows of art star Rob Pruitt’s career—how he courted controversy as he rose to fame in the early 90s alongside his then-partner, Jack Early, and later secured his own place in the art world with shows including Cocaine Buffet, 101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself, and Pandas and Bamboo. As one of America’s most provocative artists, Pruitt’s work has attracted critical attention for being consistently engaging while retaining a playful Pop aesthetic. Pop Touched Me, his first comprehensive monograph, examines the full scope of his development over the last two decades, extending beyond his conceptual art to include his painting, drawing, sculpture, textile, and industrial design. Friends, fans, artists, and art critics—from Marc Jacobs and Mario Testino to Jeff Koons and Richard Prince—all add context to the work by describing their own experiences with Pruitt and his art through insightful essays and quotes.

Magritte By David Sylvester Introduction by Michel Draguet Mercatorfonds The Belgian painter René Magritte (1898–1967) was one of the outstanding—and most enigmatic—figures of the Surrealist movement. Since the 1960s, his work has had an enormous and continuing influence, not only on art, but on culture at large. His unforgettable paintings—poetic and often puzzling—have become part of our popular imagery. This magisterial volume—out of print for more than a decade—by David Sylvester, the foremost expert on Magritte’s work, is available again to celebrate the opening of the new Magritte Museum in Brussels. Brought up to date by the museum’s director, Michel Draguet, the book offers 40 chapters of critical insights and clues to Magritte’s puzzles, and over 500 lush full-color illustrations, making it an uparalleled source for understanding and appreciating an enormously popular and remarkably creative artist. How to Read Italian Renaissance Painting By Stefano Zuffi Filled with great masterpieces by such artists as Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Mantegna, and Titian, How to Read Italian Renaissance Painting takes the reader into their world. As in the internationally successful and innovative How to Read a Painting, each spread uses an important painting as a way to explain a key concept, with numerous large details. Here, 180 works illuminate key ideas in Renaissance painting, from “perpective” and “the golden section” to “grace” and “symbolism.” In addition, there are brief biographies of the major artists. The result is an original, accessible, and affordable volume that offers an introduction into the art and culture of the Italian Renaissance. Deborah Butterfield By Robert Gordon Introduction by Jane Smiley Essay by John Yau
Now in Paperback
Poems by Vicki Hearne This new paperback edition of Deborah Butterfield showcases the full oeuvre of this great American sculptor, updated to include new images of her latest work and information on her many gallery shows and museum exhibitions. Butterfield transforms selected pieces of scrap iron and found wood into majestic, life-size horse sculptures that are, as art historian Wayne L. Roosa has written, “like ancient, noble archaeological remains, skeletal and grand.” Beautifully packaged with a new cover, this elegant and lyrical volume is the most comprehensive retrospective look at this important American artist. The book includes insightful essays by the noted author and horsewoman Jane Smiley and poet and art critic John Yau, and a selection of poems by Vicki Hearne, a close friend of Butterfield’s. Author Robert Gordon followed the artist’s career for a quarter century and

Charles Rennie Mackintosh By Roger Billcliffe The great Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) has come to be seen as one of the most influential early modern designers. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, whom he rivals in popularity today, Mackintosh viewed the design of furniture and interiors as a vital part of his architectural work. Today, reproductions and objects based on his design ideas are wildly popular. This is the fourth edition of the primary reference work on Mackintosh furniture and the first time it has been in print in more than 20 years. Completely revised and redesigned, with new information and many new color illustrations, the book documents every surviving piece of Mackintosh furniture and every drawing, as well as his interior designs (including reconstructions of interiors that have been destroyed). The Song of Krishna The Illustrated Bhagavad Gita Translated by Sir Edwin Arnold With illustrations from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art The Song of Krishna: The Illustrated Bhagavad Gita is next in Abrams’ ongoing series of classic spiritual and philosophical texts. As part of the Mahâbhârata, one of the two great Hindu epics, the Gita takes the form of a conversation between Krishna, the many-formed deity, and Arjuna, his kinsman, as the pair prepare to go into battle against a rival clan. Krishna’s moral counsel is often referred to as a concise version of Hindu philosophy, as well as a more generalized guide to leading a principled life. Indian paintings, sculptures, and textiles from the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art have been carefully paired with Edwin Arnold’s classic English verse translation to create this handsome volume, with a three-

American Modern By Thomas O’Brien With Lisa Light Photographs by Laura Resen Designer and merchant, collector and tastemaker, Thomas O’Brien has made a career of translating cool notions of modernism into an easy and generous array of modern styles that anyone can attain. Now he introduces readers to a range of those styles—from casual to formal, vintage to urban—alongside elegant photography and charming design stories. O’Brien carefully describes the design process of his chosen projects, including a downtown New York City loft, a traditional Connecticut estate, and a converted schoolhouse in eastern Long Island. He explains not only what was at work in each project to create an essentially American style, but how readers can import those practices to their own homes and personal design sensibilities. Important design principles such as architectural authenticity, color relationships, correctness of scale, and informed collecting are threaded through

By Matt Groening ■ Edited by Bill Morrison ■ Introduction by Matt Groening What would happen if the Planet Express crew and the citizens of New York City in the 31st century met the Simpsons and the citizens of Springfield . . . and how is it even possible? Prepare yourself for a Simpsons saga filled with Futurama! A Futurama fable suffused with the Simpsons! Featuring a plethora of pleasing plot devices including: evil brain spawn, lactose-intolerant space aliens, a giant ball of yarn, flying cars, mistaken identities, world domination, the brittle fabric of reality torn asunder, a comic book–collecting sentient planet, the Dewey decimal system, self-eating watermelons, slave labor, space pirates, power-crazed vampires, super-hero battles, unflattering underwear, mad science run amok, and much, much more! This is the epic story that you’ve been waiting for . . . a story so big, so ambitious, so sweeping that it can only be told in a 208-page, large format, slip-cased edition, complete with new material, supplemental stories, preliminary sketches, character designs, and a pin-up gallery featuring the talents of comics industry luminaries Alex Ross, Sergio Aragonés, Geof Darrow, Kyle Baker, Peter Kuper, and Bernie Wrightson, among others. It’s a comic convergence on a reality-ripping, time-altering, spacetraveling, intergalactic scale! It’s The Simpsons Futurama Crossover Crisis—uncut and all comedy! First published in 2002 and 2005 as two two-part comic book mini-series (Futurama/Simpsons Infinitely Secret Crossover Crisis and The Simpsons/Futurama Crossover Crisis II ), these four hard-to-find comics are collected together for the first time in a hardcover collection, encased in a double diecut slipcase, and packaged with a bonus facsimile reprint of the Eisner Award–winning Simpsons Comics #1 from 1993.

Prefabulous + Sustainable Building and Customizing an Affordable, Energy-Efficient Home By Sheri Koones Foreword by Robert Redford Prefabulous and Sustainable dispels the negative myths associated with prefab homes and shows the reader how beautiful and remarkably green prefab homes are. In this guide to prefab home-building, author Sheri Koones demystifies the prefabricated house by using 25 unique homes to showcase how factory-built homes are greener, more efficient, sturdier, and more cost-effective than site-built homes. All of the homes included in Prefabulous and Sustainable have been customized to create a level of sustainability beyond the inherent qualities of prefab. Written in an easy to understand and approachable style, author Sheri Koones walks the readers through each of the homes, explaining the materials,

Jackson Pollock By Ellen G. Landau
Now Back in Print!
This compelling and definitive Abrams classic, now back in print, nt, locates Pollock in the continuum off
his times, recreating the social and cultural milieu of New York in the 1940s and 1950s. How did Jackson Pollock become a cult figure for the Beat Generation? And what caused his reputation to continue to soar? With extensive knowledge of Pollock’s habits (much of it gained through interviews), his reading, his conversation, and the exhibitions he visited, the author retraces many of the far-flung sources of Pollock’s work. A wealth of comparative photographs that illustrate paintings by artists Pollock admired further explains the work of this complex, tragic, and immeasurably influential figure. Pollock’s big, bold canvases are reproduced in five colors to convey the brilliance of his network of tones, his aluminum paint, and his sparkling collage materials. Six gatefolds show his vast horizontal works without distortion and a chronology provides a summary of the major events of Pollock’s life. National print publicity

Using the work of masters such as da Vinci, Rubens, Blake, and Rembrandt alongside the works of Klimt, Delacroix, and DeMille, the authors guide the reader through nearly a thousand years of art history, examining the way these universal themes have been visualized according to the styles and customs of the time. The long-anticipated monograph on the co-creator of the groundbreaking comic book Love and Rockets
By Todd Hignite Introduction by Alison Bechdel In 1981 three Mexican-American brothers self-published their first comic book, Love and Rockets, and “changed American cartooning forever” according to Publishers Weekly. Over 25 years later it is still being published to critical and commercial success. Jaime Hernandez’s moving stories chronicle the lives of some of the most memorable and fully formed characters the comics world has ever seen. His female protagonists, masterfully delineated with humor, candor, and breathtaking realism, come to life within California’s Mexican-American culture and punk milieu. In April 2006 Hernandez began serializing his work in the New York Times Magazine—all of which is collected here in full color. The notoriously private artist has opened his archives for the first time, revealing never-before-seen sketches, childhood drawings, and unpublished work, alongside his most famous Love and Rockets material, much of it photographed in color from the original art. The Sea New Format!
By Philip Plisson Philip Plisson, the well-known French marine photographer, has turned his attention to his passion, the oceans of the world. Plisson’s remarkable photographs glorify humankind’s obsession with conquering the seas. His images capture the ocean’s drama and power, and provide glimpses of life in seaside communities. The book also addresses the current environmental dangers that threaten the fragile ecological balance of the planet’s waters. A book for photography lovers, undersea adventurers, and those concerned with the future of the earth, this breathtaking volume celebrates, in 250 of Plisson’s most evocative images, our neverending fascination with the world’s oceans and seas. Here is Hubble’s great visual legacy to humanity in stunning images that are benchmarks of astronomy and photography. Of the more than 100 classic Hubble images that were selected by NASA’s experts, the 20 most significant are accompanied by commentaries by notable scientists. Veteran astronauts from NASA’s five remarkable manned missions to maintain the telescope also contribute to this volume, making it an authoritative account of a magnificent scientific achievement. The Selby Is in Your Place By Todd Selby Introduction by Lesley Arfin The Selby Is in Your Place was conceived when fashion and interiors photographer Todd Selby began taking portraits of dynamic and creative people—authors, musicians, artists, and designers—in their home environments and posting them on his website. Nosy by nature, he wanted to see how personal style was reflected in private spaces. Lucky for us, he found his answer in the color-rich and eclectic quarters of a diverse group of subjects, including Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler, Faris Badwan, Helena Christensen, and Olivier Zahm, in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, and London. Each profile is accompanied by Selby’s watercolor portraits of the subjects and objects from their homes, and illustrated questionnaires, which Selby asks each person to fill out. The Selby Is in Your Place consists of over 30 profiles, many of which have never been seen, selected exclusively for the book. The result is a collection of unique spaces bursting with energy and

Art in Time Unknown Comic Book Adventures, 1940–1980 By Dan Nadel Art in Time is the companion to Dan Nadel’s Harvey Award–winning book Art Out of Time. In this unique volume, Nadel focuses on the lesser-known comic works by celebrated icons of the industry, such as H.G. Peter (the artist behind Wonder Woman), John Stanley (the writer and artist for Little Lulu), Harry Lucey (one of the artists behind Archie), Jesse Marsh (the artist for Tarzan), and Bill Everett (best known for his characters Sub-Mariner and Dr. Strange). Art in Time reprints complete comic book stories that represent some of the best but obscure adventure stories from the 1940s through the 1980s. Each comic highlights the fully developed style of its artist and celebrates these little known comic gems. Art in Time is designed as a reading book, allowing fans to catch up on some fascinating but forgotten work in comics history. SPECIFICATIONS:

Swoon Introduction by Jeffrey Deitch Essays by Caledonia Curry, Lisa D’Amour, Thomas Beale, Rollo Romig, and others This first monograph on the street artist Swoon is a crash course on the incredible range of her diverse artistic practices. Filled with brilliant color photographs, the book brings readers to streets around the world to see her life-size prints and paper cutouts that transform as natural elements slowly erode and destroy them. It travels across the waters to include striking images from her most recent projects, Swimming Cities, which show a team of craftsmen scavenging junk to create makeshift boats that are part floating artwork, part performance, and part experiments in communal living. And it invites readers inside her art collective, Toyshop, which orchestrates organic public theater that includes everything from street parties to public demonstrations. Woven together seamlessly, and accompanied by essays from fellow Deitch, this book showcases the work of

GRAPHIC ARTS
|
The Story of Graphic Design By Patrick Cramsie This comprehensive illustrated history begins with the origins of the alphabet and carries the reader through the first handwritten books, the invention of printing in the Renaissance, the explosion of graphic styles and printed media in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the impact of digital technology on design today. Like E.H. Gombrich’s magnificent Story of Art, The Story of Graphic Design is a compelling narrative that explores the evolution of styles under the pressure of social, cultural, and technological change, accompanied by a comprehensive selection of illustrations of key works in typography and design since the invention of writing. It covers a remarkable number of topics, from the art of the medieval manuscript to the birth of advertising to the workings of modern mass media. Unlike all other historians of design, Patrick Cramsie is able to bring a designer’s eye to the analysis of visual communication. SPECIFICATIONS:
The Story of Graphic Design is an indispensible book for designers, historians, and students, and will find a wide readership among people who are interested in the visual arts or concerned about the future of the printed word.

Twenty-three of his magnificent, inventive quilts—ranging from the relatively simple Tilt, ideal for beginners, to the more complex Circle of Stars, for more advanced stitchers—are showcased in the book, along with step-by-step instructions for making each one. Along the way, Fassett also offers more than a hundred photos of geometric inspiration from around the world— everything from triangular watermelon slices, to rectangular sheets of metal on African scrap dwellings, to lollipop-shaped topiary trees in Japan. In the accompanying text, Fassett reveals how he experiences the colors and basic shapes around him, how we can train our own eyes to see this rewarding source of creativity, and how we can, just as he p

an obsession with the hindquarter
A ham is (let us not mince words) a pig’s rear end. It’s a hefty hunk of flesh and bone, weighing in somewhere between 12 and 30 pounds. Fresh or cured, ham can be prepared in innumerable ways. And (here’s the clincher) ham is incredibly delicious—the kind of meat whose sheer scrumptiousness can entice even the most diehard vegan into having second thoughts. In Ham: An Obsession with the Hindquarter, Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarborough take readers on a globetrotting tour of the whole wide wonderful world of ham, from the Philippines to Spain, the Caribbean, the American South, and their own home corner of rural Connecticut (where they buy and help raise a hog of their own). Gifted raconteurs and talented cooks, the pair ham it up with a series of hilarious stories and pig out on a hundred mouth-watering recipes. Don’t miss this feast. BRUCE WEINSTEIN and MARK SCARBROUGH

AMERICAN COUNTRY HAM B OTH ARE DRY-CURED. Both are hung. Both are aged. American country ham producers have long been arguing that their hams are a terrific substitute for prosciutto crudo. And so a culinary wrestling match has been brewing for years. What’s the main difference? Italian prosciutto crudo is not smoked; most American country hams are. American country hams also typically use more salt than Italian prosciutto crudo. That higher concentration elongates and dries out the protein strands, separating them into threads—thus producing the more granular texture of American country hams. The result is a slightly chewier meat—less velvety, more rustic, and a terrific choice for the center of the table at your next holiday meal. In the end, American producers shouldn’t worry about what arrives from across the pond. Their product is a unique contribution to the global ham scene.

Good to the Grain Baking with Whole-Grain Flours By KIM BOYCE p Photographs by QUENTIN BACON p Foreword by NANCY SILVERTON
Explores the world of healthful whole-grain flours, with 75 scrumptious recipes p
Americans are eager to incorporate whole grains into their baking without compromising flavor
p
The book includes recipes using 12 types of whole-grain flours, from barley to quinoa, corn to spelt
p
With easy, approachable recipes, this is a cookbook for novices as well as experienced bakers
p
Foreword by Nancy Silverton, cookbook author, restaurant owner, and founder of the La Brea Bakery
Baking with whole-grain flours used to be about making food that was good for you, not food that necessarily tasted good, too. But Kim Boyce truly has reinvented the wheel with this collection of 75 recipes that feature 12 different whole-grain flours, from amaranth to teff, proving that whole-grain baking is more about incredible flavors and textures than anything else. When Boyce, a former pastry chef at Spago and Campanile, left the kitchen to raise a family, she was determined to create delicious cakes, muffins, breads, tarts, and cookies that her kids (and every-

Whether the girlhood bonds survived into adulthood or dissolved because of unbridgeable separations, each story reminds us that however far we travel in life, we remain close to the roots of our childhood. As readers get to know the subjects of these stories—women of all ages, from all over the United States—they will inevitably be carried back to their own youth and recall the freshness of that once-in-a-lifetime

Loving cake is a natural part of Warren Brown’s constitution. Now, in order to form a more perfect union of flour, eggs, butter, and sugar, he’s offering his unique take on classic dessert recipes from all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and Washington, DC. Starting out with Baked Alaska (what else?), Brown tours the whole country, updating regional confections like King Cake (Louisiana), Lady Baltimore Cake (South Carolina), Mud Cake (Mississippi), and Key Lime Pie (Florida). There are official state desserts (Maryland’s Smith Island Cake; Massachusetts’s Boston Cream Pie) and unofficial favorites (New York–style Cheesecake; St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake), as well as an ovenful of brand-new baked treats that Brown has created to honor specific states’ agricultural bounty (Avocado Cupcakes for California; Huckleberry Cake for Idaho). Informative sidebars add local color, and plenty of mix-and-match frosting and glaze ideas complete the mix. p
The book presents Brown’s own twist on classic American cake recipes, along with informative regional sidebars

The perfect gift for New Yorkers everywhere
I LEGO® N.Y. By CHRISTOPH NIEMANN
I LEGO® N.Y. is an imaginative look at life in New York City constructed entirely out of LEGO® pieces. Designer and illustrator Christoph Niemann was inspired to create a series of miniature New York vignettes out of his sons’ toys after a few cold and dark winter days in Berlin. The former New Yorker then posted photographs of his creations along with his handwritten captions on his New York Times blog. Resident and honorary New Yorkers around the world responded enthusiastically to the clever and minimalist inventions, which captured both the iconic (the Empire State Building) and the mundane (man standing on a subway platform) in fewer pieces than one might think possible. This book includes all of the original images, plus 13 new creations. The resulting collection is delightful in its simplicity and moving in its ability to capture the spirit of life in New York in so few strokes.

The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide Reefer Movie Madness is the perfect follow-up to Halperin and Bloom’s Pot Culture—already in its seventh printing only a year after publication. It’s the most extensive guide ever to movies for the stoner audience, a real market that has proven its mass appeal with the successful Harold and Kumar franchise and the Judd Apatow library (Pineapple Express, Superbad). In addition to entries on more than 420 films, there will be contributions from well-known actors, movie directors, musicians, and celebrities including Jason Mraz, comedian Margaret Cho, Snoop Dogg, Method Man & Redman, and Cheech & Chong. Reefer Movie Madness will cover it all, from pot-fueled comedies and druggy dramas to sci-fi flicks and 1960s artifacts to documentaries, musicals, and blockbusters. All presented in a colorful, easy-to-follow format with lots of eye-grabbing photos, sidebars, lists, and Q&As. This is the guidebook that bong-hitting movie buffs have been longing for. SHIRLEY HALPERIN has been a senior writer at Entertainment Weekly, an

From an acclaimed photographer, a joyful portrait of one of the most vibrant beaches in the world
Jones Beach By JOSEPH SZABO Introduction by VINCE ALETTI
“I’m over the top about Joe Szabo’s photographs . . . A lot of people will be inspired by his beautiful pictures.” —Bruce Weber Beginning in the early 1970s, Joseph Szabo started capturing the melting pot of humanity on Jones Beach, one of the busiest beaches in the world with more than six million visitors a year. Among the sea of bodies, Szabo’s camera reveals moments of both quiet introspection and unashamed exuberance. Images of tanned muscle men, catwalk-like displays of beach wear, heavily oiled skin, masses of sprayed hair, and shy adolescents all reveal the dynamics of the beach so close to New York City. Class, race, and other potential divisions are temporarily forgotten, and the perfect and the flawed are portrayed with the same respect and tenderness. Szabo is an internationally acclaimed artist whose last two books (Teenage, Almost Grown) have influenced and been admired by a whole generation of photographers and created a cultlike following in the worlds of fashion, advertising, and photography. This crowd, along with fans of Jones Beach and people interested in beach culture in general, will treasure this funny, sexy, lovely volume created over 35 years. JOSEPH SZABO taught photography at a Long Island,

Jean-Luc Mylayne By Ralph Rugoff and Terrie Sultan English-French Edition From 5 Continents Editions “It’s a peculiar and supremely deliberate technique, honed over three decades, and it results in some of the most sumptuous and fresh photographs I’ve ever seen.” –Time Out New York Since 1976, French photographer JeanLuc Mylayne has traveled the world in search of birds to photograph. His quest begins with a long, patient period of observation and culminates in a single image—Mylane does not believe in capturing his subject twice. In 33 years, the artist has taken no more than 300 photographs. Mylayne, who defines himself as a film director, is extremely precise in constructing what he calls his “scenes,” taking into account a number of variables, like the season or the time of day. Mylayne’s process, the tentative approach of the bird, and the dialogue between artist and subject present thought-provoking questions on the

Newspeak British Art Now Foreword by Patricia Ellis Designed by Jonathan Barnbrook A Booth-Clibborn Editions Book Published to accompany an exhibition opening at the Saatchi Gallery, London, in June 2010, Newspeak: British Art Now features an exciting array of up-and-coming British artists selected by renowned collector Charles Saatchi. As he did for Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin, and many others with his Sensation show, Saatchi stands to launch the careers of a new generation of artists with this provocative collection. One of the more than 50 featured artists has been selected from a BBC2 reality television series, Saatchi’s Art Star, during which six artists trained with some of the most influential names in the art world today. Saatchi selected only one to exhibit in Newspeak and travel to Russia, where the show opens at the State Hermitage Museum before moving to London. Patricia Ellis, an artist and curator who has worked with the Saatchi Gallery since 1998, provides the foreword and SPECIFICATIONS:

The Real Van Gogh The Artist and His Letters By Nienke Bakker, Leo Jansen, and Hans Luijten A Royal Academy of Arts Publication Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) is one of the greatest figures in Western art. Revered for his bold, expressionist paintings, he is also admired as a prodigious and eloquent letter writer. His correspondence displays a remarkable literary gift and an ability to communicate his ideas and feelings about nature, art, and life in direct, emotive language. Illustrated with works of art and letters that demonstrate Van Gogh’s abiding preoccupations--the role of color in painting, the cycles of nature, and friendship, for example--this fascinating book explores the correspondence as a self-portrait of the artist and the man. The letter-sketches that Van Gogh used to describe completed works or those in progress are reproduced here alongside the finished paintings or drawings, providing a unique insight into his artistic development. Drawing on new and extensive research, leading authorities on Van Gogh reveal how the letters enhance and shape our view of this modern master.

Manet and the Object of Painting By Michel Foucault Introduction by Nicolas Bourriaud From Tate Publishing In this encounter between one of the 20th century’s greatest minds and an artist fundamental to the development of modern art, French philosopher Michel Foucault explores Edouard Manet’s importance in the overthrow of traditional values in painting. Originally delivered in Tunis in 1971 as part of a conference on Manet and here translated into English for the first time, this powerful critique takes the form of a commentary on 13 of Manet’s paintings. For the politically minded philosopher, the connection between visual art and power is clear: art is not an aesthetic pursuit, but a means to explore—and challenge—power dynamics. A precursor to Foucault’s later work on le regard, or the gaze, the text examines paintings like Un Bar aux Folies-Bergére, where Manet uses a mirror to imply the multiple gaze of the waitress, the viewer, and the man

Pop Life Art in a Material World Edited by Jack Bankowsky, Alison Gingeras, and Catherine Wood From Tate Publishing “Good business is the best art.” —Andy Warhol Provocative and entertaining, Pop Life examines how artists since the 1980s have cultivated their public personae as a product, and conjured a dazzling mix of media, commerce, and glamour to build their own brands. Beginning with the grandfather of Pop, Andy Warhol, who manufactured mass-produced wares in the Factory in the 1960s, the book explores Jeff Koons’s infamous Made in Heaven series—showcasing his marriage and sexual relations with Italian porn-star and latter-day politician Illona Staller (aka La Cicciolina)—and his stainless steel Rabbit sculpture; an iconic array of golden spot and butterfly paintings from Damien Hirst’s recordbreaking 2008 auction; and a reconstruction of Keith Haring’s Pop Shop in New York. Tate Modern Artists Series These books are part of a Tate Publishing series focused on living artists. Generously illustrated, accessible, and affordable, the Modern Artists Series is an essential reference for all those interested in contemporary visual culture.
Antony Gormley By Martin Caiger-Smith From Tate Publishing One of the most celebrated and talked about artists of his generation, Turner Prize–winner Antony Gormley (b. 1950) generates lively debate and critical acclaim. His large-scale, iconic projects such as Angel of the North, the 100 cast-iron sculptures he placed on a British beach for Another Place, and the hundreds of small terracotta figurines he asked the public to create for Field have cemented his place among today’s leading contemporary artists. In this survey of the artist’s work, Martin Caiger-Smith examines Gormley’s influences and assesses his relationship to minimalism, arte povera, land and environmental art, and his response to the challenge of engaging with figurative sculpture at the beginning of the 21st century. With over 100 color illustrations, this is the perfect introduction to a widely

Van Doesburg & The International Avant-Garde Constructing a New World Edited by Gladys Fabre and Doris Wintgens Hotte Consultant Editor: Michael White From Tate Publishing Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) is perhaps best known as a prime mover in De Stijl, the Dutch artistic movement that demanded an extreme simplicity and abstraction in both architecture and painting. Here, for the first time, the true extent of his influence is explored, demonstrating that it reached far beyond Holland, throughout Europe, into Russia, and beyond. Inspired initially by the writings of Kandinsky on art and later by his friendship with Mondrian, van Doesburg evolved a distinctive style of abstract painting. He also experimented with and contributed to fields as diverse as film, typography, graphic design, music, and architecture. Accompanying a major touring exhibition, this book examines van Doesburg’s pivotal role in the develop-

The Picasso Book By Neil Cox From Tate Publishing Pablo Ruiz Picasso was the most prolific artist in the history of Western art. Born in 1881 in Malaga, southern Spain, he spent almost all of his life in France, dying in 1973. In more than seven decades as an artist, Picasso finished 2,000 oil paintings, along with innumerable sculptures, ceramics, collages, prints, photographs, drawings, and jewelry designs. This new book, drawing extensively on the most recent research, provides an overview of the whole range of Picasso’s art and career. Uniquely, it takes a thematic approach, examining Picasso and poetry, Picasso and war, Picasso and “disfigurement”—the fragmentation of the human form in his work—Picasso and play, and Picasso’s ruminations on the figure of the artist. The introduction looks at Picasso himself, and the myths that surround him, concluding that it is impossible to disentangle the man from his legend. Separate sections include extracts from Picasso’s poetry and writings and from critics both contemporary

Colorful and creative, a patchwork project has
Quilts evoke the past—they stimulate our earliest memories of security and comfort and resonate with historical and cultural references. For the first time, the V&A showcases its extensive patchwork and quilt collection in one sumptuously illustrated volume. Major essays by leading textile historians document the fascinating history of British patchwork and quiltmaking, while individual case studies focus on particularly complex or extraordinary pieces. Primary sources such as inventories, diaries, letters, and pieces from both private and public collections offer opportunities to reinterpret the personal narratives that document events such as marriage, childbirth, love, and loss. Quilts 1700–2010 includes a comprehensive catalogue, providing a key work of reference for quilters, quilt and textile historians, designers, and anyone interested in this extraordinarily creative art.
endless possibilities. This easy-to-follow guide offers beginners a practical approach to transforming inspiration into finished products, with an introduction to the essential tools, basic methods, and helpful techniques of patchwork, and five simple projects to make, including a pincushion and a windmill crib blanket. Beautifully photographed with helpful illustrations of each technique, plus templates for the projects, Patchwork for Beginners contains everything a first-time quilter needs to get started. Published to accompany the exhibition Quilts 1700–2010, the book contains inspiring samples from the V&A’s collection.

My Generation The Glory Years of Rock By Alwyn W. Turner Photographs by Harry Goodwin V&A Publishing On New Year’s Day 1964, the now-legendary English TV show Top of the Pops premiered on the BBC, featuring the Rolling Stones, the Hollies, and the Dave Clark Five. Over the next two decades virtually every major rock and pop act from Britain and the U.S. alike—from the Beatles and Bob Dylan to Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie—appeared on Top of the Pops, and every one was captured by the show’s official photographer, Harry Goodwin. Goodwin recorded the evolution of the era at a time of enormous social change, as music progressed from beat to protest, from Motown and psychedelia to glam rock and heavy metal. My Generation: The Glory Years of Rock tells the story of the people who provided the soundtrack to those momentous times, with outstanding, beautifully printed images of the biggest names in SPECIFICATIONS:

Grace Kelly Style Fashion for Hollywood’s Princess By Kristina Haugland With Jenny Lister and Samantha Erin Safer V&A Publishing Hollywood star, royal bride, beloved princess—Grace Kelly (1929–1982) embodied all three titles with a style all her own. Renowned for her cool beauty and faultless taste, the young actress stood apart from other film sirens of the 1950s, with thousands of women, both in the US and Europe, emulating her classic yet accessible style. Her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 catapulted Grace to further fame and cemented her influence on the world of fashion. From the Parisian catwalks to the pages of Vogue, the “Grace Kelly Look” became the look of the moment. This book, the first to look exclusively at Grace Kelly’s unique style, accompanies an enchanting exhibition opening at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in April 2010. Sumptuously illustrated,

The Day of the Peacock Style for Men 1963–1973 By Geoffrey Aquilina Ross V&A Publishing “The peacock has replaced the penguin.”—GQ, 1969 In the 1960s men’s fashion, particularly in England, witnessed an extraordinary rebirth that led to lasting social, cultural, and commercial change—what media commentators coined the Peacock Revolution. The Day of the Peacock takes a fascinating look at the shops, celebrity photographers, tailors, and fashionable men who made up the “Swinging Sixties” scene. Neatly evoking the 60s atmosphere of optimism and opportunity, this richly illustrated memoir by fashion insider Geoffrey Aquilina Ross looks at the era’s most dashing figures—fashion designer and Carnaby Street entrepreneur John Stephen; Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter, whose clients included Mick Jagger, the Beatles, and Elton John; photographers Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, and Patrick Lichfield; hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, actors Michael Caine and Terence Stamp—and discusses such iconic

Islamic Art from Spain By Mariam Rosser-Owen V&A Publishing Intricate, elaborate, and colorful, Islamic art produced in medieval Spain has had a lasting influence on Western decorative art. This fascinating book, lavishly illustrated with objects drawn from the V&A’s collections, includes stunning Byzantine works, marble tombstones and capitals, architectural models, jewelry, textiles, and ceramics. It also examines the late 19thcentury craze for the “Alhambresque” style promoted by English designer Owen Jones, the work of Antoni Gaudí, and much more. Islamic Arts from Spain addresses the creation, suppression, rediscovery, and influence of Islamic art in Spain from the 8th to the 20th century. It looks first at patronage during the “Golden Age” of the Umayyad caliphate, from the mid-10th to the early 11th century, before discussing the Nasrid dynasty, which ruled from Granada while Christian monarchs were reemerging in northern Spain. The book also explores the phenomenon of the “Mudéjar,” Islamic-influenced arts produced under non-Muslim patrons in

Yves Saint Laurent By Farid Chenoune Yves Saint Laurent, the first comprehensive retrospective of this influentional designer’s life’s work, will accompany an exhibition of some 250 garments from the collection of the Fondation Pierre Bergé–Yves Saint Laurent at the Petit Palais in Paris. From his early days working under Dior and heading the House of Dior after his mentor’s death, to the opening of his first prêt-a-porter shop on the Rive Gauche and the debut of the Le Smoking tuxedo, to the muses he adored (Loulou de la Falaise and Catherine Deneuve among them), this volume reveals the breadth and scope of the designer’s entire career. With a preface by Pierre Bergé, the book explores the sources of inspiration that drove Saint Laurent’s continuous innovation, drawing upon painting, sculpture, theater, opera, literature, and cinema. Renoir His Life, Art, and Letters
Now Back in Print!
By Barbara Ehrlich White First published in 1984, Renoir was praised for its comprehensive yet intimate history of Renoir’s life and work. Now back in print, White’s classic book brilliantly contrasts the story of Renoir’s personal battle against crippling arthritis—as well as his loss of favor with old patrons dissatisfied when he developed a new style—with the joyous gratification of the senses that flows from his canvases. Barbara Ehrlich White, a renowned Renoir scholar, devoted more than 20 years to searching out unpublished letters and documents that reveal his life as an artist and as a man. She captures both the underlying traditionalism of his training and his audacious breakthrough in style, subject, and technique. This uniquely documented tribute, with its lavish illustrations, including three gatefolds, is the essential Renoir. SPECIFICATIONS: EXHIBITION SCHEDULE:
