About the Contributors Stan Goldberg is a veteran, awardwinning comic book artist who has worked more than sixty years in the industry and is best known for illustrating Archie comics for more than four decades. He started his career at age sixteen in 1949 as a staff colorist for Timely (now known as Marvel Comics). Two years later he became the color department manager, and colored not just interiors, but every cover throughout the fifties. In 1958 Goldberg went freelance, but continued to work for Marvel until the mid-1960s, designing the color for all of their classic super heroes and villains, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Incredible Hulk. He has also illustrated for DC Comics, National Lampoon, Redbook, Seventeen, Ms., Working Woman, and many other magazines. Stan Goldberg lives in Beechhurst, New York. Jon Goldwater is the son of Archie
Comics founder, publisher, and editor John L. Goldwater. The Archie line of comic books is one of the most successful, longest running series of titles in the history of the comics industry (their first comic was published in 1939). Goldwater began his career twenty years ago as partner at Zak Concerts, the Japanese concert promoter. He is the former president and CEO of AFA Music Group, Ltd., and the executive producer of the film The Return of Superfly (1990). He has also served as president and CEO of Crash Management Inc. Using his experience in the entertainment industry, Goldwater plans on bringing the gang from Riverdale to a larger multimedia audience. He is the driving force behind the Archie Comics digital initiative as well as building new partnerships in the publishing and entertainment industries. He is also developing new projects focusing on not just Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and Reggie, but other long-standing Archie properties as well, such as Katy Keene, Li’l Jinx, the Red Circle Heroes, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Pat the Brat, Wilbur Wilkins, Bingo Wilkins, and Suzie and Sam Hill, to name just a few. Jon Goldwater looks forward to expanding the role of his family’s company, Archie Comic Publications, to prominence in the comic book medium as well as in other media. Victor Gorelick is the co-president/
editor-in-chief of Archie Comics Publications, Inc., and has been working at Archie Comics for almost fifty years. He joined Archie as an art assistant in October 1958, and over the years has served as production manager, art director, and managing editor. Gorelick has unique knowledge of every facet of the editorial process required to create and publish successful comics. He has been a writer, colorist, letterer, and everything in between. He has developed a keen sense for producing good, clean, wholesome content for Archie Comics. Through the years he has helped to build a bond of trust with Archie readers of all ages. Gorelick has worked closely with 208
numerous companies and organizations, designing and producing various custom comic books. For example, he has overseen collaborations between Archie Comics and Kraft General Foods, Radio Shack, Alcoholics Anonymous, the City and County of San Diego, and even the FBI. He was on the Comic Magazine Association of America’s Comics Code Authority Guidelines Committee, and is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Joe Kubert School, where many of today’s comics artists develop their craft. He also teaches cartooning in the College for Kids program at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York. Jack Morelli is an author (Heroes of the
Negro Leagues, Abrams, 2007), artist, and designer. He has worked in production and editorial at Marvel Comics, freelance for DC Comics and Archie Comics, and has been a comic book hand letterer for more than thirty years. He lives in upstate New York with his wife Christie Scheele and their twins. Bob Smith was born in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1951. Raised in Grayland, Washington, he left the family cranberry farm after graduating with a degree in fine art from Western Washington State College. He moved to New York in 1975, and found work as an inker for DC Comics. Twenty-three years and several comic book publishers later, he landed at Archie Comics. Since 1998, Bob Smith’s work has appeared in numerous Archie titles and on the Archie newspaper strip. In 2009 he moved back to Washington, and lives in Covington. Michael Uslan is an award-winning writer and executive producer of the Batman films, most recently The Dark Knight (2008), the third highest grossing film in movie history. He was the first instructor to teach comics at an accredited university (Indiana University in 1970) and wrote the first textbook on comics, The Comic Book in America. His autobiography, The Boy Who Loved Batman, is being published in Spring 2011. Uslan lives in Montclair, New Jersey. Glenn Whitmore’s comic book
ambitions began at age ten, when he first attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. Glenn graduated in 1987. A year later he began an eleven-year run as colorist on the Superman titles for DC Comics, which included landmark storylines of the hero’s engagement, death, return, and marriage to Lois Lane. For more than twenty years, Glenn has also provided color to popular comic book titles such as The Power of Shazam, Justice Society, Nexus, and most recently, Archie. He lives in Succasunna, New Jersey.

In celebration of the 600th issue of Archie, the story of the century—Archie Gets Married!—was released and made headlines all over the world. The eternal love triangle that has been the cornerstone of Archie for almost seven decades is finally untangled in the six-part story that started with the release of “The Proposal” on August 19, 2009, one of the bestselling comics of the year, and culminated in spring 2010 with “Happily Ever After.” The storyline, written by Michael Uslan and illustrated by veteran Archie artist Stan Goldberg, begins when Archie finds himself strolling up Memory Lane, and marries the wealthy and cultured Veronica Lodge. Later, we see what happens when he strolls down Memory Lane and marries the wholesome, peppy girl next door, Betty Cooper.
