Back in 2004, when we launched our first Amulet list, Abrams had never published novels before. As the country’s preeminent publisher of books about art and photography, Abrams had, in fact, rarely published a book without illustrations. Company lore has it that our contract terms once required artists to donate an original piece to the corporate collection. Certainly, our hallways are hung with extraordinary paintings, prints, and photographs.

I hadn’t anticipated. The first pass of the first novel to come out of design had no folios. There was no budget for copyediting or ARCs. But no one blinked an eye when I requested pricing for a three-hundred-page novel—in two colors! If Amulet changed the place, the place also shaped Amulet and, arguably, children’s literature. Pictures snuck in. Strange Case of Origami Yoda. Now, ten years and 250 titles later, Amulet lives at the corner of words and art. We publish books that are as satisfying to look at as they are to read. And we feel grateful to those artists of Abrams’ past whose works hang in our hallways, for inspiring us, just as we feel grateful to you for embracing us and, we hope, finding e R . Nicol

he calendar said early March, but the smell in the air said late October. A crisp sun shone over Cellar Hollow, melting the final bits of ice from the bare trees. Steam rose from the soil like a phantom, carrying with it a whisper of autumn smoke that had been lying dormant in the frosty underground. The trees in the forest were still bare, and when you squinted you could just make out the winding path that ran from the village all the way to the woods in the south. People seldom traveled in that direction, but on this March-morning-that-felt-likeOctober, a horse and cart moved down the road. It was a fish cart with a broken back wheel and no fish. Riding atop the bench were two children, a girl and a boy, both with striking red hair. The girl was named Molly, and the boy, her brother, was Kip. This much-anticipated follow-up to Jonathan Auxier’s exceptional debut, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes, is a Victorian ghost story with shades of Washington Irving and Henry James. More than just a spooky tale, it’s also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling. The Night Gardener follows two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives. With Auxier’s exquisite command of language, The Night Gardener is a mesmerizing read and a classic in the making.

At McQuarrie Middle School, the war against the FunTime Menace—aka test prep—wages on. Our heroes have one battle under their belts, and they’ve even found a surprising ally in Jabba the Puppett. But to defeat the Dark Standardized Testing Forces they’re going to need an even bigger, even more surprising ally: Principal Rabbski. But with great forces—aka the school board—pushing her from above, will the gang’s former enemy don a finger puppet and join the Rebellion—or will her transformation to Empress Rabbski, Dark Lord of the Sith, be complete? With this timely episode in the blockbuster Origami Yoda series, Tom Angleberger demonstrates once again that his “grasp of middle-school emotions, humor and behavior is spot-on” (Scripps Howard News Service). Tom Angleberger is the author of the bestselling Origami Yoda series. He is also the author of Horton Halfpott and Fake Mustache, both Edgar Award nominees, and The Qwikpick Papers. Tom maintains the Origami Yoda–inspired blog origamiyoda.com. He is married to author-illustrator Cece Bell and lives in Christiansburg, Virginia.

In the third installment from the team who created Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie and Like Bug Juice on a Burger, Eleanor's relationship with her best friend, Pearl, experiences its first growing pains. When a glamorous new student transfers to school, at first Eleanor’s excited about the possibility of a new friend. But when Pearl is assigned to be the new girl’s buddy, Eleanor fears she can’t compete. Lyle Hertzog and his friends Marilla and Dave expect to spend another dull holiday passing time at the local Qwikpick convenience store. Then an article in their hometown paper catches their eye—the sludge fountain at the nearby sewage plant is being retired. With this news, the three friends decide they’re not just normal kids who don’t have Christmas plans: they’re the Qwikpick Adventure Society. Their first mission: to see the “poop fountain” before it fades from glory.

Dog Beach Marilyn Monroe jumps up on the couch and starts licking my face like I’m her new favorite person in the world.
“I’m happy to see you too, Marilyn Monroe.”
She licks me even more, and then settles down, sitting so close to
me that one of her paws rests on my leg.
I try to go back to reading, but it’s difficult because Marilyn
Monroe is just sitting there, staring at me, as if she’s asking me, “What’s next?” or “What are we going to do now?” So I put down the magazine and look back at her.
“I used to have a dog,” I start. And I tell her all about Danish. She
barks at just the right spots, like she understands me and gets what I’m saying. And when I tell her that Danish died this past winter, she lets out a little whimper.
“You’re sweet, Marilyn Monroe,” I say. “Thanks for listening.” She
licks my hand, as if to say she’s always here to listen. For some reason, she’s the easiest person to talk to. Okay, I know she’s not a person. Easiest creature to talk to?
Spring14ChildCat_T_1-33xx.indd 12
I wonder why that is.

Eleven-year-old Remy loves Seagate, the island where her grandmother had a house and where her family spends every summer vacation. But this year’s different. Remy misses her dog, Danish, who recently passed away. The usual Seagate traditions don’t feel the same—and neither does her relationship with her two best friends, Micayla and Bennett. Micayla’s family is moving to Seagate year-round, and she’s spending more time with the year-round kids. Bennett’s doing “boy stuff” with new kid Calvin and his snobby sister Claire. Remy takes comfort in the company of Dog Beach—which is where she

In this second book in the series, Salem is invited to a birthday party, and she wants to make sure everything goes perfectly. But from the invitations to the presents, party games, and spells gone awry, nothing happens exactly the way it should, and she’ll need Whammy’s help to sort it all out. she manages to keep it together. For now. When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa must face her worst fears and step through the mirror to find the origins of the curse. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy-but-suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

during World War II. After Nazi Germany invades and occupies Norway, Espen and his friends are swept up in the resistance movement. Espen gets his start delivering illegal newspapers, graduates to the role of courier, and finally becomes a spy, dodging the Gestapo along the way. During five years under the Nazi regime, he gains—and loses—friends, falls in love, and makes one small mistake that threatens to catch up with him as he sets out to escape on skis over the mountains to Sweden. Preus incorporates archival photographs and other images to tell this story based on the real-life adventures of Norwegian Erling Storrusten, whom Preus interviewed in Norway. Margi Preus has written many popular plays, picture books, and novels for young readers. She has traveled the globe to research her novels and, along the way, has made friends in Japan, Norway, and many other places. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota. Visit her online at margipreus.com.

On her 18th birthday, Lena Mattacascar decides to search for her father, who disappeared into the northern wilderness of Scree when Lena was young. Scree is inhabited by Peculiars, people whose unusual characteristics make them unacceptable to modern society. Lena wonders if her father is the source of her own extraordinary characteristics and if she, too, is Peculiar. On the train north, she meets Jimson Quiggley, a young librarian who is traveling to a town on the edge of Scree to work in the

The train is soon boarded by a handsome young marshal, Thomas Saltre, who learns who Lena’s father is and convinces her to spy on Mr. Beasley and the strange folk who disappear into his home, called Zephyr House. Eventually, though, Lena must venture into the wilds of Scree and confront her deepest fears. Maureen Doyle McQuerry is an award-winning poet, author, and teacher. But their communication is not spoken; rather, it is created by loving hands that use American Sign Language. Readers will learn how to sign 15 words using American Sign Language with the help of sidebars that are both instructive and playful. And the beautifully illustrated beach scenes will appeal both to the deaf community and to hearing parents and children, who will enjoy this gentle introduction to some basic words in ASL. Hands & Hearts is a picture book unlike any other, revealing the special bond between mother and child.

But each activity is another opportunity for the over-enthusiastic Tyrannosaurus Rex to wreak havoc. Mendez and her parents helped end school segregation in California. At the time, students with Mexican or Latino heritage were not allowed to attend schools that were designated for “Whites only”; they were sent to “Mexican schools.” Although she was an American citizen of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage who spoke and wrote perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a “Whites only” school. Her parents took action by organizing various sectors of the Hispanic community and filing a lawsuit in the federal district court. The success of their actions, of which Sylvia was the principal

From international-award-winner Beatrice Alemagna, a lion explores one of the most beloved cities in the world

A Lion in Paris is widely regarded as the most accomplished book by multi-award-winning children’s author/illustrator Beatrice Alemagna. It tells the story of a lion who, bored by his rural life in the savanna, seeks excitement and opportunity in the City of Light. Upon arriving in Paris, the lion is disappointed to find that despite his size, people barely pay attention to him, not even when he lets out a ferocious roar on the busy underground Métro. Revealing the sights and sounds of Paris from Montmartre to the Eiffel Tower, this beautifully illustrated book successfully conveys the experience of being a stranger in a new city and the process of understanding one’s own identity.

This quirky tale from 1950 takes readers through the process of choosing building types and making all kinds of decisions. In a wonderful blend of absurd poetry and pragmatism, Mr. Rouse contends with building materials, transportation, lighting, and plumbing, encountering quarreling stairs and dapper gutters on his way. Stefan and Franciszka Themerson were Polish avant-garde artists and filmmakers who in the 1940s fled to London, where they worked on a huge range of creative projects. In 1948, they founded the influential Gaberbocchus Press, publishers of Kurt Schwitters, Jankel Adler, and Alfred Jarry, among others. Barbara Wright was a translator and art writer who worked closely with the Themersons and also translated key works of 20th-century French literature into English, including Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi.

Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879–1940) especially liked the style and characters he saw in children’s paintings. He once said he borrowed ideas for his own work from the way children used shapes, lines, and colors to conjure up a new world on a sheet of paper. This fun and imaginative activity book borrows Klee’s ideas back, encouraging children to use their

artistic instinct and get creative. Some of the drawings invite new characters, and others introduce Klee’s own—the tightrope walker! the ventriloquist! the angry leopard!—as well as inspiring other ideas like tracing and cutting out, playing with and expanding on Klee’s own paintings. Sparking endless possibilities, this activity book is an ideal and immersive introduction to an accessible modern artist.
