Through your dedicated support, Hoag has provided vital health resources to its community members. Hoag is equally committed to enhancing the additional aspects of life that impact well-being, especially for the community’s most vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, and those in low-income areas. Hoag’s collaborative care ensures that families have access to fundamental necessities, including health care, mental health services, food, and legal and educational resources. As champions of well-being, your family brings hope to the countless people who turn to Hoag to help them live healthier, happier lives.
As a flagship for community care, the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living is unique and serves as a one-stop shop to meet the many needs of underserved families. With bilingual and bicultural staff, the center ensures that people have access to information they can understand and utilize. Through the center, Hoag has provided physical space to more than 25 partner agencies under one roof. This ensures that resources are available to our neighbors and those in surrounding cities, closer to home. The center is a powerhouse of services for everything from dental health to domestic violence prevention and youth diversion, among others.
Recruiting more certified, expert members of the community benefit team is key to meeting the needs of the underserved. Each team member is a highly trained, caring, and compassionate individual who serves as a beacon for people of all ages when they are experiencing a crisis or the challenges of everyday life. As more people learn about Hoag’s array of services, they seek out its uniquely qualified staff. There is an immediate need for staff who can step in to help. Philanthropic funding would fund three years of salary and benefits for additional community case managers, licensed clinical social workers, and registered dietitians. The workload of each of these

“The Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living is at the core of many of our families’ social networks. It helps to facilitate community ties by creating a safe, peaceful, and inclusive space that encourages hope and facilitates the development of social capital for our community. By nurturing social connection and friendships, we can create an environment that not only improves physical health but also improves overall quality of life, resilience, and longevity.”
- Michaell Silva Rose, DrPH, LCSW, Director of the Community Health Department and Community Benefit ProgramAs a reflection of your legacy of care at Hoag, we present the following transformational giving opportunity that will make a lasting impact every day on the lives of people in need in Orange County. As Hoag continues to grow its capabilities of touching more lives, we know this wouldn’t be possible without donors like you.
This philanthropic gift will designate a space inside the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living for your beloved sister and aunt, Dr. Esther Achten. Her namesake will be a long-lasting reminder of a person who dedicated her life to delivering care and compassion to others.
Your dedication is a testament to your care for the most vulnerable members of our community. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this proposal.
The atrium in the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living is the receiving space, signaling an entry point for better days. With its broad halls, greenery, and gathering spots, it welcomes people from all walks of life who come to Hoag in need. In the atrium, children play together, and adults bond and support each other during challenges. It is the equalizer, a safe touchdown spot that reassures those who’ve entered the building that within these walls are the tools to build better futures. This light-filled atrium is where hope shines for the most vulnerable. Beyond the doors that line this central space are solutions and advocates ready to help improve lives. As the Dr. Esther Achten Community Atrium, this space will honor its namesake, her legacy as a selfless person, and as a beloved member of your family. It brands this lifeline with everything she held dear: helping those who need it most.
