CIRCLE 1000 R AISES
. 1 MILLION IN 2023 I SSUE 2023
OVER $1
Dear Circle 1000 Community,
Our 36th Annual Founders’ Celebration Brunch may have been the most inspirational ever. It marked the first full year since the passing of our beloved founder, Sandy Sewell, who no doubt would be proud of how we have continued her legacy of philanthropy for the Hoag Family Cancer Institute. Our keynote speaker Hayley Arceneaux mesmerized us with her story of surviving childhood osteosarcoma, later becoming an oncology physician assistant at the same hospital where she was treated, and orbiting the Earth aboard the first all-civilian space mission, Inspiration4. Each of us who attended the June 1 event at the Balboa Bay Resort felt inspired by Hayley’s persistence in the face of adversity. While it’s unlikely any of our lives will unfold quite like Hayley’s, many of us have also shown remarkable courage against cancer. Every year, we are awed by the numbers of attendees who stand for cancer survivor recognition. Seeing each other’s vibrant faces, while knowing that many of us have also lost loved ones to cancer, reminds us why we continue to support Circle 1000
At our brunch, Flynn A. Andrizzi, PhD, president, Hoag Hospital Foundation, presented the 2023 Vin Jorgensen Award to Sue Hagestad, a former chair of our committee. Sue is a fitting recipient of this award honoring Hoag’s most distinguished leaders as she personifies the philanthropic commitment upon which Circle 1000 was founded. That’s a commitment we collectively demonstrated in 2023 by raising $1,106,030, bringing our 36 -year total to more than $24 million. This year’s funds will be allocated as follows:
Physician Recruitment and Leadership
Research Expansion, including Cellular Therapy
Arden Flamson Oncology Nurse Navigator Program
Sandy Sewell Nursing Scholarships
Oncology Nursing Symposium
Non-Nursing Education Fund
Oncology Staff Self-Care Service (Cancer Center and Breast Centers)
Circle 1000 continues to have a meaningful impact on cancer care at Hoag. Chairing this year’s Founders’ Celebration Brunch gave us the chance to bring together our respective generations of Circle 1000 members, including Sandy’s children, Laurie and Jeff. Next year, we are thrilled that Mary Buckingham and her daughter Lacy Robertson will take the helm as the first mother-daughter co-chairs in Circle 1000 history. Please save the date of Thursday, May 30, 2024, for the Circle 1000 Founders’ Celebration Brunch at the Balboa Bay Resort. As we continue to write our own stories of impact, we thank you all for your enduring support.
Warmly,
Circle of Support 1

Theodore Robins Ford Donates
$25,000 to Circle 1000
In honor of its 100th anniversary, Costa Mesa-based Theodore Robins Ford donated $100 per car sold in 2022 to several local charities. Hoag was the leading choice of customers who voted on beneficiaries to receive a portion of the $140,000 raised. Since Gini Robins was one of our original Committee members, the family-owned dealership directed $25,000 to Circle 1000, presenting a check at their anniversary celebration on February 7

Physician Recruited with Circle 1000 Funding Implements Whole-Body Melanoma Detection System
Hoag is the first West Coast hospital to offer the VECTRA WB360, a whole-body 3D photographic imaging system that maps the entire surface of the skin in less than a second. Circle 1000 directed $200,000 to fund the recruitment of Medical Director of Dermatologic Oncology Steven Q. Wang, MD, who implemented the technology for high-risk skin cancer patients. Using 92 cameras and artificial intelligence, the technology allows better detection of changes in moles and lesions while avoiding unnecessary biopsies.
Massage Breaks Coming to Hoag Family Cancer Institute Clinics
The Hoag Family Cancer Institute personnel spend their days caring for others. With Circle 1000 funding, the institute will begin offering a little care for caregivers in late 2023. Every other month, massage therapists will provide 15 -minute massages for the staff at several outpatient clinics.
Dori Holnagel, vice president of Hoag Family Cancer Institute, developed the idea as a way to provide tension relief but also to show appreciation. “Oncology caregivers are so devoted to their craft and their patients, and it can be challenging,” Holnagel said. “Giving a caregiver 15 minutes all to themselves shows them we care about them.” Holnagel plans to have a card printed and placed near the massage chairs indicating that the treatments are compliments of Circle 1000

Leading Physician-Scientists Recruited with Circle 1000 Support
CIRCLE 1000 FUNDING plays a pivotal role in recruiting leading oncologists to the Hoag Family Cancer Institute and supporting their programming once here. In 2022, we directed $200,000 toward the recruitment of Carlos Becerra, M.D. as medical director of cancer research. A renowned researcher who previously served as Director of the Innovative Clinical Trials Center at Baylor University Medical Center in Texas, Dr. Becerra already has opened more opportunities than ever for Hoag patients to participate in phase I clinical trials. In August, he was named the new chair holder of the Margaret Givan Larkin Endowed Chair in Developmental Cancer Therapeutics.
“Dr. Becerra is stewarding the Hoag Family Cancer Institute’s ‘privademic’ mission, offering top-tier clinical trials in a patientcentered community hospital setting,” said Burton Eisenberg, M.D., Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Family Cancer Institute. “Under his leadership, we are expanding our impact on cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, with more than 100 clinical trials underway.”
Circle 1000's impact on physician recruitment continues with $200,000 allocated toward bringing Simon Khagi, MD, to the Hoag Family Cancer Institute in fall 2023 as medical director of the Brain and Spine Tumor Program. As a specialist in neuro-oncology, a field characterized by significant unmet needs and poor patient outcomes, Dr. Khagi will continue his research in areas such as glioblastoma and metastatic brain cancer at Hoag.
"I decided to join Hoag because of its strong research infrastructure and a track record of scientific contributions,” said Dr. Khagi, previously a medical director at Dartmouth’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center and the University of North Carolina's Neuro-Oncology Program. “I believe that Hoag has all the right ingredients to foster the development of novel clinical trials that will advance our field into the future and help save lives."
“The generosity of Circle 1000 allows us to even entertain the notion of bringing in physician-scientists like Dr. Khagi,” said Dori Holnagel, vice president of Hoag Family Cancer Institute. “These doctors are thinking about the next generation of treatment for cancer patients, while also providing expert care today.”

Circle 1000 -Supported Oncology Nursing Conference
Sessions Blending Innovation & Practicality Draw Record Attendance
UST 24 HOURS after our Founders’ Celebration Brunch, Hoag’s 18th annual Embracing Excellence in Oncology Nursing Practice Conference kicked off with Circle 1000 support. A record 400 registrants from 25 different states attended either virtually or in person at the Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach. “We had more than double the impact we have ever had,” said Dori Holnagel, vice president of Hoag Family Cancer Institute, attributing the record to the two attendance options. “Some want to be educated from home and some want to come, and some of that is based on budget and ability to get time away,” she said. “The generosity of Circle 1000 gives us the flexibility to offer both.”
Circle 1000 also covered registration costs for HFCI nurses, who comprised about one-third of attendees.
Hoag’s conference is unique in its focus on oncology nurses rather than physicians. “The Hoag oncology symposium is the perfect blend between science and innovation and practicality in my everyday work,” one nurse said in a post-conference survey.
some of her patients, “Cancer is not their biggest problem.” To help patients with food insecurity, housing issues, and other challenges, Kensky and her colleagues established Caring For A Cure, an annual team of Boston Marathon runners who fundraise to ease their patients’ cancer journeys.
In moderating the keynote, Holnagel noted that the Hoag Family Cancer Institute also has a program designed to bridge medical care and other support that patients may need. Drawing from a $250,000 fund, nurse navigators may direct up to $500 to meet a patient’s acute non-medical needs, no questions asked. If the need is between $500 –$2,000, a team of nurses reviews the request.
Keynote speakers Jessica Kensky, RN, MSN, and Patrick Downes, Psy.D were a highlight of the conference. As newlyweds in 2013, both were severely injured in the Boston Marathon bombing. Now a double amputee, Kensky eventually returned to her job as an oncology nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. “It was so important for me to put scrubs on and be a nurse again,” she said. Downes is now a staff psychologist with a nonprofit serving veterans. These survivors of trauma are dedicating their lives to helping others facing trauma. As harrowing as cancer may be, Kensky noted that for

Volunteer Leader Karen Linden Brings Circle 1000 Spirit to the Boldly Hoag Campaign
FOR OVER 20 YEARS, Karen Linden has been a dedicated volunteer leader at Hoag— a journey that began with her commitment to advancing cancer care as an active member of Circle 1000. She joined this “amazing group of women,” she said, shortly after being treated for cancer at Hoag in 2001. Her personal experience as a patient made her want to give back.
“When I was first diagnosed, I felt I had the privilege and ability to go anywhere my care required. But I found my care here, in my own community, which was so meaningful to me. I want everyone to experience the level of care I experienced at Hoag,” Karen said.
Today, she remains passionate about Circle 1000’s fundraising model and engaging the next generation of women to carry forward the legacy of the Founders’ Committee. According to Karen, a highlight of the last ten years for Circle 1000 has been the programmatic growth Hoag has seen under the leadership of Dr. Burton Eisenberg, Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Family Cancer Institute.

Karen Linden at the Sun Family Campus groundbreaking celebration with Maricela Rios-Faust, Dr. Burton Eisenberg, Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, and Dori Holnagel, Vice President, Hoag Family Cancer Institute
WITH THE EXPANSION of Hoag’s Sun Family Campus in Irvine, the Hoag Family Cancer Institute will soon see additional growth as new cancer facilities—the Cancer & Digestive Health Pavilion and a dedicated urgent care for cancer patients—will increase access to Hoag’s innovative cancer research program and advanced cancer care.
Inspired by what’s to come, Karen gave a generous gift to support Boldly Hoag and is now chairing the Cancer & Digestive Health Committee for the Hoag Hospital Foundation’s Boldly Hoag capital campaign. The $300 million campaign is supporting Hoag’s $1 billion expansion project, bringing six new buildings and 120,000 square feet of outpatient facilities to the Irvine campus.
“This is the right time,” she said of her new volunteer role. “I can give more.” In March, Karen’s beloved husband Tom passed away from Alzheimer’s disease and prostate cancer. He likewise received excellent care at Hoag, strengthening Karen’s conviction in Hoag’s people and services. “Hoag has become my family,” she professed.
AS CHAIR OF the Cancer & Digestive Health Committee, Karen is looking forward to sharing the impact of Hoag’s expansion with donors and community members. “Expansion creates more opportunities for collaboration, to treat patients in an environment where your radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, etc., are in the same space. This impacts not just Irvine but the larger community,” Karen explained.
By continuing to elevate the entire organization, world-class care puts Hoag on the map as a leader in health care, attracting the brightest minds in medicine to push the field forward and benefiting patients across all of Orange County.
According to Karen, the Cancer & Digestive Health Committee is exciting for several reasons, including the ongoing evolution of cancer research and the strengthened partnership between cancer and digestive health physicians on complex digestive tumor types. For patients, this means direct access to novel therapies and the most advanced cancer treatments available.
Thanks to volunteer leaders like Karen, a shared passion for cancer care is inspiring others to be bold in support of Hoag’s expansion and added cancer services on the Sun Family Campus.

The Unbroken Circle: Families Span
Generations in Circle 1000
WHEN WE SAY Circle 1000 is family, in many cases, we mean it literally. The ripple effect of mothers bringing in their daughters who bring in their daughters and so on is a critical part of Circle 1000’s sustained impact for 36 years. The passage of more than three decades inevitably leads to the loss of much-loved members, including our founder, Sandy Sewell. But Sandy’s legacy endures as our circle widens with each new generation of members.
The Ueberroth-Booth family is a perfect example. After being treated at Hoag for breast cancer in 1976, Ginny Ueberroth, now 83, became one of Circle 1000’s first members. Over the years, she not only was one of the group’s most active members, but she also brought her daughter, Vicki Booth, literally to the table.
“I was living in L.A. but would come down for the brunches, and when I moved here in 1994, I joined,” Vicki said. “Sandy was looking to the next generation. She was always a forward thinker and said, ‘If we want this to last, we need to grow.’”
“It’s been wonderful working with my mom,” added Vicki, who was a young teen when her mom was diagnosed. “I am so grateful that she’s been around for my whole life, so I have a loyalty and appreciation for Hoag.”
The family commitment to Circle 1000 continues with Vicki’s daughter Sarah, 27, who though not yet a member has been attending Founders’ Celebration Brunches since high school.
“It’s important to me to carry on the tradition of being involved,”
Sarah said. “Circle 1000 won’t exist unless the younger generation continues growing it and spreading the word.”
The Buckingham-Robertson family involvement in Circle 1000 also spans multiple generations, beginning with Mary V. Buckingham’s great aunt, Virginia Valentine, who invited Mary to the first Founders’ Celebration Brunch in 1988
“The whole purpose was to educate our community about cancer, and I was just so impressed with that,” Mary said. Mary’s daughter, Lacy Robertson, fondly remembers her mother hosting invitationaddressing parties at their home when she was a child. Lacy began attending brunches while in college. Now, she and her mother are co-chairing the brunch next year after co-chairing underwriting in 2023
“I think it’s important to bring the younger generation in to carry on as we are getting older,” Mary said. “We all get bombarded with asks. But if we want to provide our community with the level of care that Hoag does, we have to support it.”
The ripple effect continues as Lacy and her friends—including 2023 co-chair Marianne Larkin, daughter-in-law of one of our late founders, Margaret Larkin—bring in other people they know. “There’s a lot of interest in people who have never heard of Circle 1000 who then come to the brunch,” Lacy said.
Circle 1000 could have run its course with the passing of our founders. Instead, with the new generation joining, the circle, and its impact, remain unbroken.

Thank You
“For 36 years, Circle 1000 has been dedicated to advancing cancer care at Hoag. Since I joined Hoag, they have been instrumental in providing funding for a host of innovative new programs, technologies, and clinical research. They have helped us recruit some of the best medical and surgical oncologists around the country. The Hoag Family Cancer Institute would not be where it is today without Circle 1000’s unwavering commitment to our patients. We are immensely grateful for all they’ve contributed and what the future holds because of their support.”
