From the President

S T E P P I N G B O L D LY I N T O T H E F U T U R E This year, Hoag celebrates 70 years of serving the community. While Hoag has grown, evolved and innovated throughout this journey, we have remained true to the values on which we were founded, partnering with our friends and neighbors. Their support has allowed Hoag to reach accomplishments unheard of at a community hospital, for the good of all of us. Now with an exciting vision for what comes next, it is this partnership with the community that positions Hoag to step boldly into the future. It’s exciting to commemorate Hoag’s 70th anniversary with the largest gift received in our history—a bequest from the estate of Audrey Steele Burnand valued at $106 million. With this gift, the Steele family’s legacy of giving to Hoag surpasses $134 million. Their impact on Hoag and the health of our community is nothing short of transformative, and I am grateful for their generosity. Hoag’s milestone anniversary is also marked by the public launch of the largest capital campaign in our history. The Boldly Hoag campaign is a $300 million capital campaign that will fund the Hoag expansion in Irvine, enabling it to increase access to innovative health care while enhancing the Hoag experience at every touchpoint. Thanks to several visionary donors, including Diana and David Sun with their lead $50 million gift, Boldly Hoag is already garnering remarkable momentum. I am also pleased to share the news that Hoag’s Irvine campus will be named the Sun Family Campus as a symbol of our gratitude. You may have noticed Hoag’s recently refreshed brand identity, which is an expression of this pivotal moment in our history as a health care leader delivering world-class care in Orange County. This publication and these pages may also look different to you. While Scanner magazine served us greatly for decades, Hoag’s new visual identity and your feedback encouraged us to go forward with a new, energized look and feel.

Hoag Next will carry on Scanner’s legacy, enhancing its visual identity and content, but maintaining its paramount message of philanthropy. The Hoag expansion represents a significant leap forward both for Hoag and for the health care landscape in our region. It’s an undertaking that necessitates the community’s involvement and all-in support. The community has always been there for Hoag, supporting our mission and believing in our vision, and I look forward to seeing what we will do together through the Boldly Hoag campaign. I hope what you see in the next few pages inspires you and sparks curiosity for everything to come. Sincerely,

Flynn A. Andrizzi, PhD President, Hoag Hospital Foundation

YOU. You would travel anywhere for the best care. We’ll save you the trip. World-class health care. Right here in OC.

From the Chair

Dear Friends of Hoag, It’s an exciting time. Those of us who have become part of Hoag’s family of grateful patients, advocates and friends know how much amazing work it does for the community. As it celebrates its 70th year, I want us to reflect on how far Hoag has come by maintaining the spirit of innovation. Hoag is about acts of transformation. As we embark on another year, we not only acknowledge important milestones but move forward with expanded programs, new spaces, more renowned experts and thoughtful initiatives that will touch the many corners of Orange County. This is especially true as we transform the landscape of health care in Irvine and its surrounding areas with an ambitious new capital campaign: Boldly Hoag. Already, we are seeing new formations in the Hoag Irvine campus skyline, and it has only just begun to grow. This is where we come in. Every time we tout the Hoag message, we create new possible passages of support. Our work as envoys of Hoag’s mission is crucial to its future. Despite, or perhaps because of, all the work we have yet to do, we reconvene this year with inspiration and renewed commitment to transformation. When I reflect on what Hoag has done for me, my family and community, I remind myself to go forth with fervor. I invite you to do the same. In your service,

Richard H. Taketa Chair, Hoag Hospital Foundation Board

At its heart, the Boldly Hoag campaign is about expanding the Hoag experience and defining what comes next in health care.

make us unique are reflected in everything we do. It’s a commitment that unites us and keeps us both focused on our vision and delivering on our promise. Boldly Hoag, our capital campaign to fund Hoag’s expansion in Irvine, is an expression of the Hoag experience in its truest form, based on three key principles:

by investing in technology, research and innovation to constantly improve our systems and the systems around us.

Elevating the Patient Experience. Building on the most advanced thinking in health care, architecture, hospitality and customer service, Hoag has thoughtfully designed these new spaces to elevate the patient experience—from arrival, to wayfinding, to how rooms look and the way they make people feel.

The Best Talent, Supported to Succeed. The best physicians seek institutions that afford them the freedom to not only practice medicine but also move it forward. Facilities built with the support of Boldly Hoag will amplify our ability to attract and retain top talent and empower them to practice, deliver and evolve health care.

Campaign Progress Report Over the last several years, the Hoag Hospital Foundation has been planning and preparing for the public launch of the Boldly Hoag campaign. Part of this effort included communicating with Hoag’s closest supporters about the vision and inspiring lead gifts.

Transformational Giving Hoag is extremely grateful to Diana and David Sun of the Sun Family Foundation for their visionary gift of $50 million in support of Hoag’s expansion. One of the largest gifts in Hoag’s history, the Sun Family Foundation’s early generosity helped inspire Hoag to dream big while setting the tone for an effective campaign. In recognition of their transformative giving, Hoag’s Irvine campus will be named The Sun Family Campus.

GENERATION

Training the Next Generation of Healers Teaching and training talented young physicians through fellowship programs is one of the ways Hoag is investing in the future. With visionary support from donors, Hoag currently offers fellowship programs in several specialties, including orthopedics, oncoplastic breast surgery and palliative care. While fellowship programs are more commonly offered at academic medical centers, Hoag is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between academic institutions and community hospitals by preparing up-and-coming clinicians for high-impact medical careers. These fellows go on to lead or join top institutions across the nation, carrying forward the knowledge and skill they’ve gained at Hoag to improve patient care in their communities.

Learning from a Pioneering Breast Cancer Program Hoag treats more women with breast cancer than any hospital in Orange County. One reason for this is the scope of Hoag’s expertise in breast cancer surgery, including oncoplastic breast conservation, which combines removal of the tumor with plastic surgical reconstruction. In fact, Hoag’s very own Melvin Silverstein, MD, FACS, Gross Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery and medical director of the Hoag Breast Center, was among the first in the United States to pioneer this highly specialized technique and established Hoag as the first in Orange County to offer oncoplastic breast conservation. Under Dr. Silverstein’s leadership, Hoag has trained more than 50 fellows. Dr. Elizabeth Kraft, the eighth Muzzy Family Endowed Fellow in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Thanks to the foresight and generosity of James and Pamela Muzzy, the Muzzy Family Endowed Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery provides a sustainable source of funding for one of the three fellowship positions available each year. To date, the Muzzy family has supported a total of eight fellows.

22

Practicing Alongside the Country’s Top Orthopedic Surgeons With fellowship programs in Adult Reconstruction and Total Joint Replacement, Surgical Spine, and Sports Medicine, the Hoag Orthopedic Institute is making an impact in the lives of countless patients through the gift of mobility—all while turning out some of the best fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in the country. Hoag donors help make this possible. Ranked in the top 30 best orthopedic hospitals in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, the Hoag Orthopedic Institute offers fellows the opportunity to learn from some of the country’s most renowned surgeons. By participating in up to 800 surgical cases each year, fellows gain valuable hands-on experience that prepares them for any number of complex cases they might face in their careers. Fellows also engage in two long-term research projects with the goal of publication, national conferences and Hoag’s Annual Orthopedic Fellowship Research Day. The program is highly competitive, and as the Hoag Orthopedic Institute’s reputation has grown, so has its applicant pool of exceptional fellows. In August, the team welcomed its 2022-2023 cohort. For aspiring health care administrators, a Health Policy & Management Fellowship provides valuable administrative experience in the clinical environment for better outcomes and enhanced delivery of care.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute Fellowship Class of 2022-2023

Expanding an Emerging Specialty Unlike hospice, which is a program of care for the terminally ill, palliative care is a specialty that optimizes life for people living with a serious illness. By relieving symptoms and stress from illness through medical management and emotional support, Hoag delivers Dr. Vincent Nguyen and Fellow Dr. Amrita Sabharwal

care that honors patients’ dignity and respects their choices.

Through the power of philanthropy, Hoag is proactively advancing the field of palliative medicine through its growing fellowship program, led by Dr. Vincent Nguyen, Palliative Care Program Medical Director. In partnership with UCI, Hoag provides essential specialized training for two fellows every year in a combined academic and community setting that deeply integrates palliative care services into the fabric of care at Hoag, further establishing it as a leader in shaping what it means to care for the whole person. 23
