VISUAL CULTURE

A compelling account for tattoo lovers, illustrators and anyone interested in popular visual culture.

THE SECRET LIFE OF TATTOOS Meanings, Shapes and Motifs Jordi Garriga ISBN: 978-84-17656-57-7 (EN) ISBN: 978-84-17656-81-2 (FR) 15.00 x 21.00 cm | 5 ⅞” x 8 ¼” 260 pages | Fully illustrated in colour English text | Paperback February 2022 Distribution: Worldwide £19.95 | $24.95 | €24.95 Imprint: Hoaki

This book delves into the meaning behind tattoos, exploring their past and their symbolism.

Jordi Garriga is a freelance writer, journalist and editor. He currently collaborates with El Bulli Lab (Fundació Ferran Adrià), FlandeCoco, Catalunya Turisme and Barcelona Activa, among many other renowned institutions, publishers and advertising agencies. He works also as a freelance journalist and editor.

Tattoos, perhaps one of the oldest forms of communication or body art, have had and still have different meanings. From healing powers to the identification of criminals, through myths and different beliefs or simply as a form of identification and affirmation of group belonging, tattoos are one of the most characteristic means of expression associated with sailors, soldiers, organised crime, gangs or urban tribes, as well as being a form of body adornment and expression of a lifestyle, philosophy or many people's beliefs. By way of a clear, insightful text, this publication unveils the meaning of the tattoos that have lived on through the passage of time and that, even today, explain a lot about the person who wears them. After all, a tattoo is much more than a drawing on the skin; it’s a declaration of intent. From drawings that date back to the dawn of civilization to contemporary designs, each tattoo has a hidden story that this book is eager to reveal.

FASHION PATTERNMAKING

From one chapter to the next, readers will learn the fundamental skills necessary to master the essentials of constructing women’s skirts. This book includes QR codes for video explanations. PATTERNMAKING FOR WOMENSWEAR: A REFERENCE GUIDE Constructing Base Patterns, vol. 1: Skirts Dominique Pellen ISBN: 978-84-17656-75-1 23 x 33 cm | 9” x 13” 272 pages | Fully illustrated in b&w English | Paperback February 2022 Distribution: Worldwide £29.99 | $39.95 | €35.00 Imprint: Hoaki

The first volume of six comprising all aspects of patternmaking for womenswear, this book is a comprehensive approach to the fundamentals of flat-pattern drafting for skirts in all their variations and forms.

Passionate about the arts, Dominique Pellen studied drawing and painting, and has focused his artistic career on fashion design and patternmaking. Since 2003, he has alternated collaborations with different brands with lectures on styling, design and patternmaking at the exclusive school of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne (the Haute Couture Trade Association of Paris). The school is internationally known for the quality of the lessons it offers students, who come from all over the world, on the demands, techniques and know-how of haute couture, and its traditional excellence. In France, Dior, Lanvin, Balmain, Mandel and Anne Valérie Hash draw upon the school's expertise.

Developed by fashion designer and teacher Dominique Pellen, the patternmaking method is explained in this book in a simple, clear, precise, highly detailed manner, and covers the information necessary for creating every style of skirt one could imagine. Flat-pattern drafting is the process of creating volume from a 2-D surface by outlining the pattern on paper, using specific body measurements to which ease is added according to the desired style of the garment. This book is suitable for a wide-reaching audience, including professionals, students and fashion addicts, and can also be used at professional schools and institutes, where this method has been approved and tested to great success. Individuals who want to design and make clothes will discover all the elements necessary for the construction of just about any style of skirt, easily adapting the book's lessons to their skill level. This volume, which also includes QR codes which lead to videos with further explanations, is the first in a series of invaluable guides that explore the exciting world of garment-making and fashion, a gateway for users to successfully begin making patterns of their own.

FASHION PATTERNMAKING

This volume is an essential tool for understanding and applying artisanal techniques to contemporary bespoke tailoring.

THE SARTORIAL MASTER

Traditional Tailoring Techniques for Gentleman's Wear Artiel García Aliste ISBN: 978-84-17656-54-6 21.00 x 27.00 cm | 8 ¼” x 10 ⅝” 264 pages English text | Hardback February 2022 Distribution: Worldwide £35.00 | $49.95 | €45.00 Imprint: Hoaki

This handbook is a valuable resource for mastering the principles and techniques of traditional bespoke tailoring with this valuable handbook, the product of a master tailor’s lifetime of work. Based on the practice and the teaching experience of a master tailor, this thoroughly detailed book contains the fundamental principles of traditional sartorial garment construction: the art of designing, cutting, fitting, and finishing menswear. Constituting a return to precision in hand-crafted tailoring and a valuable practical guide for fashion students, professionals and fashionistas, it brings together the various aspects of the techniques that have been honed by three family generations of artisan tailors practicing their craft from 1915 to the present day. This comprehensive treatise includes chapters dedicated to body and garment measurements, how to craft patterns (including different techniques to adapt to the physical characteristics of each client), and how to create a wide range of different classic styles of jackets, waistcoats, trousers and coats.

At the age of 23, Artiel García Aliste (1940-2019) took over the family’s third-generation tailoring business from his father, who in turn had inherited it from his father Artiel García Parra (1920-1951) and he, in turn, from his father Amaro García (1915-1932). For years, he has combined his meticulous tailoring services with intense work as a teacher at the Escuela Superior de Sastrería (School of Dressmaking) in Madrid, Spain, founded by the Spanish Tailors Association in 1868. For many years, Aliste was also director of the official publication of the Tailors Association, the Revista Sartorial Española (Spanish Sartorial Journal), and lectured and published many technical works and articles. Once he retired, he dedicated his time to sharing the knowledge acquired during more than 75 years of dedication to professional education, and to collecting information and published materials on the profession at an international level.

FASHION BUSINESS

Thoroughly illustrated, this book covers the aspects of the fashion business beyond clothing: branding, marketing, retailing, merchandising and business identity, as well as psychological, social, and ethical aspects. BEYOND FASHION

Inside the Fashion Business Ilaria Caielli ISBN: 978-84-17656-73-7 17.00 x 24.00 cm | 6 ¾” x 9 ½” 224 pages | Fully illustrated in colour English text | Paperback May 2022 Distribution: Worldwide £19.99 | $29.95 | €25.00 Imprint: Hoaki

This thoroughly-illustrated volume covers all elements of the fashion business beyond clothing, from the commercial to psychological and sociological aspects of the industry.

Ilaria Caielli has a degree in history and art criticism, and in communication and the culture of fashion. An expert who is incredibly passionate about fashion, Caielli regularly collaborates with several publications, including Il Corriere della Sera and Vanity Fair Italia. She develops editorial content for major Italian fashion brands. In the last 10 years she has lived in China, the United Arab Emirates, the Seychelles, and Cyprus. She is the author of the book UAE 101. Stories and Cultural Learning (a short guide about online shopping), for which she won the Future Stars prize from the Arabian Business and Online Shopping Awards.

Beyond Fashion provides a behind-the-scenes peek into the world of fashion, a universe that is as fascinating and creative as it is inextricably linked to commercial, psychological and social canons. Branding, marketing, retailing, merchandising and business identity, style, the eternal pursuit of beauty, and the search for personal expression are the fundamental aspects of an industry which has evolved to become one of the most sophisticated, influential and dynamic sectors in the world. The implications are not just economic: what we wear conveys who we are. Clothes and accessories are the bearers of complex psychological and social meanings, they are aesthetic products, means of self-definition and objects of desire. Complementary to the evolution of fashion itself, hand-in-hand with changes in taste throughout history, the practice of shopping has undergone epic transformations, becoming a daily activity, an integral part of everyday life. So, which elements are involved in the creation of this 'desire'? What are the ingredients of fashion alchemy? This book reveals these and many more secrets of the fashion business.

A detailed and abundantly-illustrated reference that focuses on the innovative curved score folding for sheet metal techniques to create beautiful, dynamic threedimensional forms, much like metal origami, in jewellery and metalsmithing. Anastasia Young is a London-based jewellery artist, author and lecturer whose work has been exhibited internationally. Examples of her work are held in the permanent collections of the Science Museum, London and Central Saint Martins Museum. Young is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, where she lectures and teaches short courses in jewellery making. Having written three technical jewellery books (Thames & Hudson, A&C Black) which have been translated into seven languages, Young is well known as an educator and through her teaching and writing. Paul Wells is an award-winning London based silversmith and jeweller, renowned for his use of direct metalworking techniques, which have been recognized by Goldsmiths’ Crafts and Design Council with two Gold Awards for Technological Innovation. Having taught at several London colleges for two decades, Paul Wells is a respected educator and keen advocate of fold-forming, and has contributed to many books published by Quarto, Thames & Hudson and A&C Black.

The book’s clear, hands-on approach, with explanatory photographs for each step, makes it an invaluable resource for established jewellers wishing to learn more about new techniques, jewellery students, home crafters and advanced amateurs. Readers will discover a variety of ways to score and fold metal and give it different finishes, shaping flat sheets into to visually stunningly organic forms, including guides on the tools needed for each method. JEWELLERY

A complete, in-depth manual that explains everything one needs to know about drawing jewellery—earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets—as if they were real.

JEWELLERY ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN, VOL.2 From the Idea to the Project Manuela Brambatti Cosimo Vinci ISBN: 978-84-17656-56-0 21.00 x 29.70 cm | 8 ¼” x 11 ¾” 200 pages | Fully illustrated in colour English text | Paperback February 2022 Distribution: Worldwide £29.99 | $39.95 | €35.00 Imprint: Hoaki

After the introduction into geometry, perspective and the representation of materials in vol 1, this volume constitutes a thorough and complete study on the fundamental aspects of graphically depicting a wide variety of jewellery.

Manuela Brambatti began her career in the fashion world in the late 1970s working for Style and other fashion magazines. She has collaborated with Giorgio Correggiari, Krizia and Gian Marco Venturi, but her most important and far-reaching experience was her work with Gianni Versace, where she played a crucial role in setting standards with regard to the presentation and illustration of the house’s fashion and home collections. She currently freelances as an illustrator in the fashion, jewellery and design industries. Cosimo Vinci studied jewellery design in Florence and Vicenza, Italy. With a focus on artistic consulting, branding and project design for jewellery, watches, sunglasses and fashion accessories, his clients are international companies both small and large. He has designed pieces for famous fashion brands such as Versace, Versus, Balmain, Montana, Laura Biagiotti, Valentino and Etro. In 2011, Vinci won the Bijoux d'Autore design competition awarded by the Associazione Gioiello Contemporaneo (Contemporary Jewellery Association, Italy). Since 1998 he has been teaching at The Art and Craft School in Vicenza, Italy.

Having learnt about geometry, perspective and representation of materials in the first volume, this second book in this twopart series delves deeper into the process of designing jewellery, from the first sketch to the final representation, with special emphasis on how to work on ideas, plan a collection, and design and illustrate a wide range of pieces, such as necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets. The present volume tackles the process from the initial idea, based in natural or geometrical forms, to the final drawing of the completed piece, including illustration techniques and sources of inspiration, all aspects that will stir up the reader’s creativity. It is the ultimate tool and resource for jewellery students and professionals, and even illustrators in search of professional guidelines in freehand drawing and painting techniques when representing jewellery.

Brimming with illustrations, this stunningly original book presents the role of light in art throughout history.

Massimo Mariani holds a degree in painting from the Accademia di Brera (Milan, Italy) and has exhibited in numerous galleries in Italy. He has published books on diverse topics, such as cinema, art, the representation of femininity, poetry, and Freud and the subconscious, and has written articles about the art world for Grafica & Disegno. His most recent publication is What Images Really Tell Us, a volume about visual rhetoric in advertising and graphic design.

This richly illustrated book takes readers on a tour through the history of art to learn how artists have used light (and its lack of it as shadow) to make a statement about their subject matter or create a specific mood, with examples by masters such as Giotto, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Courbet, Turner, Klimt, and many more. It also includes theoretical approaches starting with Plato and Aristotle, moving on to Descartes, Newton, Goethe and Chevreul. Throughout history, artists have played with light, approaching it as both a subject and tool to create the desired atmosphere, convey ideas, and inspire emotions in the viewer. In medieval frescoes, rays of light stood for the presence of the divine, while 17th-century Dutch painters used light to indicate depth and construct an impactful setting. The Impressionists wanted to depict light itself and the way it plays upon the surfaces of objects in the form of colour. Photography and film have used light, both natural and artificial, to make things visible in the first place. This volume delves into these and many more topics and constitutes a perfect reference book for artists, students, scholars, and art lovers.

A book devoted specifically to portraying children while acquiring a good command of a wealth of painting and illustration techniques and styles. Portraying people is undoubtedly one of the most difficult aspects of drawing. Expressions, movements, emotions and gazes add a series of challenges not present when drawing still lifes or landscapes. In addition, the scant number of books specifically about drawing children leave many of the particularities related to the portrayal of childhood unresolved. This book, now in paperback, fills this void. Using live models, either posing or simply naturally, photographs, videos, drawings of faces, it contains a step-by-step, detailed explanation on how to draw children. Through an introduction to proportions, and by training in observing the changes children experience over the years, the reader learns how to capture both children's physical and psychological transformations. Portraying Children is intended for illustrators and those who love to draw, and anyone else who wants to capture the memorable and fleeting moments associated with childhood.

RECENTLY PUBLISHED AND ANNOUNCED TITLES REDISCOVERING GOUACHE

A New Approach to a Classic Technique for Contemporary Artists and Illustrators Aljoscha Blau ISBN: 978-84-17656-62-1 22.00 x 24.00 cm | 8 ⅝” x 9 ½” 184 pages | Approx. 250 colour illustrations English text | Paperback October 2021 Distribution: Worldwide except France and Germany £19.99 | $24.95 | €24.95 Imprint: Hoaki

An inspirational book to get you started with gouache. In this book, gouache, a classic technique—used by Turner, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Picasso, Gris, Braque, Matisse and Miró, among many others—often compared to watercolour, acquires a new dimension, as it offers a bolder approach to contemporary artists, illustrators and graphic designers. Gouache erases the boundaries between ‘proper painting’ and the spontaneous charm of watercolour, combining the advantages of both techniques. Diluted, gouache is almost like watercolour, but when used on its own, it can be applied in opaque layers with a matte surface reminiscent of pastels. Soluble in water, it is rather forgiving and allows for corrections and revisions, and finally, the fine grain of the pigment it contains makes detailed drawings possible. Award-winning illustrator Aljoscha Blau shares his many years of experience, offers material recommendations, tips for swift success, suggestions on composition, the use of colour, tools and processes. And he spices it all up with his own illustrations, which are both an incentive and a feast for the eyes...

Aljoscha Blau is one of the most renowned illustrators in German-speaking countries. He was born in 1972 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), USSR. Since earning his degree in illustration and graphic arts from HAW (Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg, Germany), Blau has worked as an illustrator and author for German and international publishers. Blau teaches and conducts illustration and drawing workshops at various art academies in Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and France. He currently lives in Berlin.

This is the second edition of the first volume in our series of practical manuals about the basics of the art of draping, a fashion technique that involves working with fabric and toile directly on the mannequin. Draping, also known as moulage, is a fashion design technique that involves working with fabric directly on a mannequin, ‘sculpting’ the toile on a dress form. Imagination and freedom are the key principles of this process, allowing the designer to start from an idea and change it as the garment progresses. Pieces take shape inch by inch on the dress form, going directly from sketch to fabric. Using the intricate process of draping, this extensively illustrated publication is an essential stepby-step guide for students, couture connoisseurs and fashion professionals who want to delve deeper into a technique used by prestigious fashion houses around the globe. This volume offers everything readers need to learn about the principles of draping and to gain a solid foundation for making their own imaginative pieces without limiting their creativity.

The second volume of our practical manual about the art of draping includes the creation of complete items of clothing.

Danilo Attardi is a well-known Italian fashion designer, consultant and professor. His innate passion and vocation for fashion emerged in his mother’s boutique. Already during his first year as a fashion student, he took part in AltaRoma, Italy's most important fashion show, then went on to establish his own label, Danilo Attardi Studio, after having completed his studies in Rome, Milan and Florence. In addition to designing collections, Attardi teaches modelling and fashion design techniques and advises companies related to the fashion industry, including, Brunello Cucinelli, Max Mara, Moncler, Benetton, Miroglio Group, Saint Laurent and Red Valentino.

Following the first volume of Fashion Draping Techniques, which focused on details, this new volume takes a step forward and moves on to complete items of clothing, such as dresses, blouses, jackets, and skirts, all explained in a detailed and easy to understand manner. Each chapter also includes suggestions about what kind of fabric to use in each piece of clothing. Draping involves working with fabric directly on the dress stand, allowing designers to bring their creations to life, adapting the style and fit as they work. The results are new styles, cuts and lines that give life to a new three-dimensional prototype, without the standardised restrictions of paper patterns. This gives designers an immediate idea of what their creation will look like and easily lets them decide how to move forward, through the use of toile, pins, pleats, modules, draping, craftsmanship, and boundless creativity.

After decades of using software as their exclusive work tool, graphic designers today are rediscovering the creative and expressive power of handmade characters: lettering has distinctive visual impact and provides endless possibilities for the expression of ideas through a more artful use of type, texture and volume. This results in personal, timeless ‘works of art’ and a richer aesthetic experience. This publication, now in paperback, brings together a wide range of custom lettering projects produced by graphic designers and typographers from around the world. It focuses on the design and creation processes and on the application of lettering projects on different supports, such as billboards, public walls, invitations, and menus, serving as decoration or as part of a branding system. Discover this versatile art form with this unique book.

Basic geometric shapes and their various combinations are hugely popular in graphic design. The creative possibilities they offer are limitless, and viewers continuously interpret them consciously and unconsciously. In this book you will find many examples of why geometry is still very much relevant in today’s graphic design industry and how it is a crucial part of our visual language. Beyond their colour and size, forms and shapes determine the character and the mood of a layout, without us even realising it. They provide order and harmony in a world of imperfection and chaos. Designers know this and have been using geometric shapes as a tool for communication and visual impact since the very beginning of the profession. The broad range of case studies featured in this book demonstrates how familiar shapes can be transformed and used to convey new concepts and trends in design.
