Introduction
The journey started behind my dad’s scooter, on the streets of Hanoi, where I fell in
love with architectural remnants of past French colony. After the first year at Amherst, drawing and architecture studios nurtured in me a passion for design, reinforcing my determination to pursue architecture. That very decision and the unyielding love of cultures took me to Paris to be a part of GSAPP’s New York - Paris architecture program and to Beijing for an internship with X6. Studio. Back to Amherst after time abroad, I sought to advance in architectural maturity by taking M.Arch’s graduate studios at UMass Amherst. Architecture aside, I am a keen urban sketcher, painter and travel photographer.
This portfolio is designed to show wide aspects of my architecture and art work,
including personal, academic and professional practice, during the years of 2014-2016.

TRANSLATING WONDER THE KALEIDOSCOPE HOUSE
ARCH 500 | GRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO I FALL 2016
Three levels of translation, from an existing phenomena to abstract drawings and three dimensional structure then expanded to habitable space, comprised the spectrum of this project. Faithfulness to the process and the initially established principles hold the essence of the translating mechanism. First, the drawing series represent the abstract transcription of the phenomena of symmetry. Symmetrical operations, namely reflection, rotation, translation, gliding and scale, bring order to chaos - randomly generated network of lines (image to the right). Repeated layering gradually populates the drawings, sugessting spatial potential. The second phase took these flat drawings to three dimensional space. Lastly, the concept was adapted to a narrow site to build a habitable museum-residence for a collector who is fascinated by symmetry.

Move into 3D space In four layers that made up six drawings, lines with similar properties are lofted to break the abitrary of symmetry and generate a dynamic form while preserving the most vital feature that holds up the entire symmetrical network: the impenetrable center

PHENOMENAL TRANSPARENCY
BARCELONA PAVILION VISITING CENTER ARHA 216: INTERMEDIATE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO AMHERST COLLEGE, SPRING 2015
9
The project is about the design of a new building from the ground
up, establishing a formal, programmatic and spatial relationship with the existing historic building and site. Primarily, it will address the architecture of the Barcelona Pavilion connecting to and reflecting upon the style, space, structure, experience, theory or form. This addition consists of a viewing space, a study center and a library.
In precedent study, I analyzed Barcelona Pavilion’s phenomenal
transparency through three points: first, the simultaneity of view through reflective materials; second, fluid organizational sequence - space fluctuates in continuity and last, organized flow and contemplated arrangement.

CONCEPT

Flipping the spaces vertically
The Layering of Space Overlapping floors: horizontally dynamic arrangement
The concept took inspiration from the interlocking spaces diagram in the analysis above. The idea is to recreat the architectural experience of transparency by creating multiple layers of simultaneous views while exploring interlocking and overlaping spaces. The design approach expresses an interest in the dynamic movement of architectural elements not only horizontally but also vertically.
The Layering of Space Overlapping floors: vertically dynamic arrangement
The Layering of View Calculated distance frames the historic pavillion; reflection brings it into the new structure. The Pavilion get layered multiple times in the landscape.

Trapping viewers in iron cage of unvaried view, the repetitiveness becomes an issue considering the renewed function as a Parisian cultural center and art gallery. Nonetheless, it offers a beautiful iron frame. Inspired by how Ai Weiwei generated dynamics and peculiar outlook out of most mundane materials, the concept aims at breaking monotony by means of substraction and addition while preserving the original iron structure.

ARCHITECTURE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN DESIGN PROJECT OCTAGON THE THE OCTAGON HOUSEHOUSE TIA ARCHITECTS
TIA ARCHITECTS SUMMER SUMMER 2015 2015
The Octagon House’s geometry allows for extra living space and natural light while reduces building cost, heat loss and gain. The central column, with its radiating structure, creates an interesting dialog with the roof. The floor plan is designed to bring harmony to the public-private space relationship.
