As you may be awar on Tuesday May Hoboken will hold an election for City Council. Unfortunately, past Hoboken lections have been marred by political machines, developers, and other special interest groups using nonymous political funds to pay for campaign advertisements. Sadly, it appears this election will see more of the same old tired political practices of the past. Even more disappointing is the fact that rMayor Zimmer, Michael Lenz, and their political allies appear to be headed down this disturbing path.

Enclosed for your re iew are two documents filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC). The fir. t is Mayor Zimmer's ELEC report, which lists a confidant and political supporter of Michael Lenz as her campaign treasurer. The second ELEC report is for an anonymous Political Action Committee ( C) called "Move Hoboken Ahead'. As you will note the Chairman of this PAC is none other than the s me individual. Even more alarming is that ELEC regulations prohibit a candidate or campaign treas rer from coordinating with a PAC, both directly and indirectly. So it appears Mayor Zimmer is violating ca paign finance regulations. When developers aired with former Mayor Peter Cammarano used an anonymous PAC to launch a series of attacks against M yor Zimmer I stood side by side with her to denounce it. It is very disappointing that Mayor Zi mer now appears to have changed her stance and is ready to utilize these same campaign tactics agai st me. nd
While I have always een willing to work with our Mayor on initiatives that move the 2 Ward forward it is no secret we hal'e disagreed on the proper use of Hoboken's $25 million, and still growing, surplus. I believe the surplus should be returned to taxpayers and the inflated tax rate should be cut immediately so we sto~ over taxing residents. Mayor Zimmer and Michael Lenz don't believe the surplus should be returned, ut should be kept at City Hall with no taxpayer oversight. I ask today, if the bureaucrats and politicians i City Hall won't be open and honest about who is funding and authoring their campaign ads then how can you trust them to be open and honest with an over $25 million surplus? I
If we leave the surplus in the hands of bureaucrats and professional polltlclans they will just find ways to spend it. iTogether we have a voice and we must let City Hall know we want the surplus-retumed and the tax rate-cut now. -- - - -- ---I look forward to up ating you on the status of the surplus soon.
