2. Green Streets Program
2. Green Streets Program
A Green Streets program is being developed by Council to facilitate a collaborative community component of the Hobsons Bay Canopy Delivery Plan, which is the implementation arm of Councils Urban Forest Strategy. It is based on the Cool Streets Program, which was run in 3 streets across the Municipality during 2019-2020.
The program objectives are to:
1. To maximise urban greening benefits at the local scale and showcase integrated climate adapted design responses for whole streets
2. To collaborate with and build local community knowledge of the role, function, and value of urban greening and increased canopy cover in Hobsons Bay
3. To monitor and evaluate the green and blue infrastructure approaches for embedding as business as usual in Councils works programs
4. To support Council’s strategic commitments in particular the Urban Forest Strategy,
Biodiversity Strategy, Integrated Water Management Plan, Better Places, Climate Change
Adaptation, Living Melbourne, and Greening the West
The program will involve the following steps:
Example streets for application:
1. Lagunaria replacement where the trees have been causing significant issues within a street and need removal
2. A street in Altona Meadows and Seabrook, the residential areas most in need of improved tree canopy cover
3. A wide street that will redesign and reconstruction to better configure carparking but to improve both tree canopy cover and passive stormwater infiltration through installation of typologies
4. Opportunities nominated by residents keen to run the program in their street
