Master Composition – Creative Practice – Contemporary Jazz

The final concerts of the Master in Composition 2022 reflect the aesthetic diversity at work in our program. Thus we will travel between the most written music, quasiimprovised structures, powerful electronic sounds and a musical theater with digital contours. The common point between these journeys is a spirit of discovery, an openness and a constant sense of form. These concerts are open to the public and are meant to be the true culmination of the studies during which the artistic richness of our students is revealed.

Corentin Barro Even Pire

Altin Volaj formless and boundless echoes of the universe …

For ensemble, singer/actor, and non-western instrument(s) formless and boundless echoes of the universe is an experimental multimedia group creativity project that unites stage performers/improvisers from different musical genres, languages, aesthetics, social, and cultural rituals. In the process of deforming all the previous compositional forms and structures, the formless helps us understand how a group performance works in a live music setting. This project is like linguistic sonic dialogues and conversations among all participants. Through multiple resonances on stage, I intend to bring to the forefront performative and aesthetic practices and methods that address current and future personal compositional goals. This project’s music aesthetics and rituals range across a spectrum from the Balkan folk music «aura» to the gamelan music tradition, like a non-continental, archipelago thing or way of thinking. To cite Kamau Brathwaite, I would say that this non-continental “dialectic” way of thinking is like a “Boundless Open three-dimensional Spatial Universe.” Mentored by Simon Steen-Andersen

Ali Latif Shushtari Zār

It was in 1909 that Arnold van Gennep defined the Rites of Passage and the concept of liminality as a threshold state of a transition. We have never lived in a more culturally mixed world with people not being able to find a stable post-ritual state. As in my life, liminality plays a major role in my compositions. Coming from a different culture immensely affects my aesthetics as an artist. This cultural ambiguity was at first an unconscious existence in my compositions but the more I matured as a composer the more clearly I could feel its emergence and hence was able to control it. In this piece, I am finding my way back to the original meaning of liminality developed by van Gennep. I am using an Iranian ancient ritual as a framework for my composition to realize a culturally liminal state as its inevitable consequence. Luciano Azzigotti Ita & the Crystals

Retro-futuristic drama for soprano, choir and early music ensemble. Ita is a retroprophet who holds the memory of the world. But she cannot remember, trapped into a whormhole of strange phenomena, where effects precede their causes. Suddenly, strange crystals grow, whose symmetry seems like a forgotten incantation. Ita&tC is an initial experiment in linking the voice, ancient instruments, and some technologies in a simple and connective musical experience. Mentored by Simon Steen-Andersen
