BELIEVING IN THE LIMITLESS POTENTIAL OF GIRLS HOCKADAY DEVELOPS RESILIENT, CONFIDENT WOMEN WHO ARE EDUCATED AND INSPIRED TO LEAD LIVES OF PURPOSE AND IMPACT

WHY BOARDING Driven by our mission to develop resilient, confident women who are educated and inspired to lead lives of purpose and impact, Hockaday’s philosophy and culture supports boarders to grow their talents and explore leadership opportunities, both at School and in the community. Faculty, dorm parents, coaches, and administrators encourage student initiatives. Our girls champion their classmates’ endeavors and form a sisterhood that endures long after they graduate. Boarding at Hockaday is the opportunity of a lifetime that leads to a lifetime of opportunities. Learning in a boarding community allows our girls to tap into their strengths, learn from their failures, and develop the resilience they need. At Hockaday, our graduates are ready to lead lives of impact.

DISTINCTIVE COURSES

Hockaday’s Institute for Social Impact uses the power of engaged, hands-on learning to prepare our students for leadership in their communities, work places, and society. The Institute allows students to engage with diverse partners, learn from civic leaders, tackle projects with community impact, and put their creative ideas into action for lasting social benefit.

Each year students conduct research at university and professional labs which concludes with the annual “Fall Poster Symposium.” Working on real-world projects allows students to enact relevant change and empowers young women in the field of science. Students share authorship on publications in peerreviewed journals, and our students attend and present at scientific conferences.

With the support of a faculty mentor, students with a particular interest may pursue an experiential, project-based, or real-world learning experience either through personalized learning or by taking advantage of local partnerships. Recent courses include: Exploring the Food Desert Problem in Big Cities; Playwriting and Dramatic Studies; and Mental Illness and Popular Media.

Literature and Philosophy; Spycraft: Espionage and Diplomatic Policy; Technical Theater; Anatomy, Evolution, and the Zoo: Intersection of Biology, Design, and Community Impact; Shakespeare: Poetry and Performance; Forensic Science; American Dreams and Nightmares: A Cultural History of Postwar American Film; Microbiology and Human Diseases; Spanish Poetry and Pop Music.

STUDENT LIFE

One of Hockaday’s Four Cornerstones, Athletics plays an integral role in the lives of Hockaday students. Offering 13 varsity sports, Hockaday athletics provides the opportunity to be tested with myriad challenges; handling failure, working with a diverse group of people, facing personal weaknesses and strengths, experiencing the importance of teamwork, humility, self-discipline, and focus. In addition to competitive athletics, each student enjoys the value and benefits that are part of Hockaday’s physical education, recreation, health, and wellness programs.

The arts are alive and thriving at Hockaday and offer a unique crucible where knowledge, creativity, innovation, and initiative all converge. Our robust program in the performing arts includes Choir, Dance, Orchestra, Debate, Theater and Technical Theater. Beyond the traditional classroom, students have exceptional opportunities to hone their performance skills in our phenomenal campus venues and on the larger stages of Dallas. In addition, musicians and vocalists can advance their talents with private instructors through our on-campus private music lessons.

Beyond the classrooms, athletic fields, stages, and art studios, Hockaday students pursue their passions through councils, boards, and student-initiated clubs. Hockaday clubs foster a sense of unity while providing space for sharing ideas and interests, developing leadership, and just having fun. Organized into service, academic, and special interest groups, student clubs run the gamut, focusing on areas such as diversity, politics, service, social justice, the arts, and technology. Clubs are driven by students’ interests and their activities are student-directed.

Leadership is built into the very fabric of a Hockaday education. Our girls are prepared to lead in a rapidly changing, complex, and connected world. Whether a student is the captain of the Debate Team, editor of The Fourcast newspaper, founder of the Girls Giving Global club, President of House Council, leading a class discussion, listening to her peers’ perspectives, or living by the Honor Code, each girl at Hockaday is celebrated for her individuality and inspired to lead with resolve.

Every day the Hockaday campus is alive with activity, and the residence halls are bustling. Advisory, Big Sister/Little Sister, Athletics, Form Day, Student Diversity Board, Arts, Winter Formal, Boarder Buddies, Hall Wars, Clubs, One Hockaday, House Council, Green & White Day, Form Retreats, Assemblies, Spirit Events, Coffeehouse— Hockaday students experience life abundantly! Our students’ unique experiences, cultures, and backgrounds create a community of friendship, support, and camaraderie that enriches their perspectives and daily lives.

Developing the visual art and observational skills of Hockaday students is one of the core missions of the School. With courses in Studio Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, Photography, and Film, students are given the chance to explore and create in diverse mediums and in collaborative settings. Our programs are hands-on, experimental, and process oriented, while providing opportunities for intellectual and analytical discovery. Art students participate in exhibitions on campus, in the Dallas community, and at the annual Independent Schools Association of the Southwest Arts Festival.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE “I LOVE THAT EVERYONE HERE IS SO EASY TO TALK TO. WHEN I HEAR THEIR STORIES, IT ENCOURAGES ME TO SHARE MY CULTURE, AND I GAIN A BROADER VIEW OF THE WORLD RIGHT HERE IN MY OWN ‘HOME.’”

Schmitz Residence Hall

Our residents come to Hockaday from the United States and around the world, and revel in the excitement of creating a cohesive community of sisters and friends from a diverse population. They learn to balance activities and academics with the help of their faculty mentors and dorm parents. As they navigate choices, Hockaday girls gain confidence in themselves and independence to explore new opportunities.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BOARDER

7:15 AM Wake Up!

From the first day boarders arrive on campus, they are warmly welcomed into their Hockaday home. Within the residential community, there are numerous leadership opportunities. The girls elected to House Council represent boarding students by advocating the ideas and opinions of their peers to administrators. Additionally, prefects serve as role models and specifically assist with new student transition to Hockaday, as they check in frequently with the residents on their hall. Many boarders visit PK–4th

Grade classrooms weekly to share ideas and participate in activities as part of the Lower School Boarder Buddy Program. They form bonds with our youngest students that extend beyond the classroom to our all-school spirit events and celebrations. Hockaday boarders have fun and form friendships that will last a lifetime. Spontaneous debate or spontaneous dance party... either one is possible in the dorms!

GLOBALLY CONNECTED Whether learning from diverse voices in The Literature of Minorities course, analyzing the international market in Economics, or using case studies to investigate infectious illnesses around the world in Microbiology and Human Diseases, Hockaday boarding students live and study side by side in a globally connected community. Hockaday provides cultural programming to all students, help to our families around the globe, and English language support services when necessary. In addition, students benefit from connections to alumnae currently living in over 40 countries. Even as boarding students immerse themselves in Hockaday’s accomplished academic community, they also immerse themselves in one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. Living on our 88-acre campus in the heart of metropolitan Dallas, Texas, students not only have access to the awardwinning Hockaday faculty, programs, and facilities, but also to the world-renowned resources of our city. A stronghold for international business with a diverse population, Dallas provides our students with varied cultural festivals, dining experiences, and holiday events along with academic and co-curricular options. Our girls take advantage of these opportunities and make an impact on campus and beyond.

Dallas, Texas is served by two major airports both within 20 minutes of the Hockaday campus: Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW). DFW is the primary international airport serving the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It is the largest hub for American Airlines, and it is the ninth busiest gateway into the United States. There are direct flights daily from DFW to 233 cities all over the country and the world.
