WElcome from Dr. Karen Warren Coleman Eugene McDermott Head of School Dear Hockaday Parents, Alumnae, Faculty, and Friends: Welcome to The Year of the Daisy – A Celebration of Asia, the 2019 Hockaday Parents’ Association Benefit! Enclosed please find your guidebook for this year’s Benefit. The guidebook details the one-of-a-kind auction items that await you on February 2, 2019, and the names of the many people, businesses, donors, and volunteers who make possible this extraordinary celebration of Hockaday’s community. The Hockaday Parents’ Association has worked tirelessly all year long to create a truly memorable experience for our special community, and we welcome all of our treasured Hockaday Parents, Faculty, Staff, Trustees, and Alumnae to take part in this meaningful event. The participation and presence of our diverse and vibrant community make the Benefit one of the most highly-anticipated nights of the year. The care and enthusiasm the Benefit Committee puts into each aspect of the auction and celebration is clearly evident, and this annual celebration is a wonderful example of the spirit of the Hockaday community – supporting one another and the causes so dear to the School. The proceeds from The Year of the Daisy will support the completion of the Ann Graves Child Development Center, which will play a significant part in nurturing and caring for the young children and grandchildren of our faculty and staff. Your generosity will bring us closer to opening the doors to a permanent home for these special young members of our community. The new, state-of-the-art facility will enhance the beauty of the campus, with a cohesive design, and will be a powerful tool for attracting and retaining our excellent faculty and staff. In addition, the Ann Graves Child Development Center will serve as an important symbol of the importance our school places on community. On the night of February 2, we will enjoy fellowship, merriment, sumptuous food from The Food Company, and lively music from The Georgia Bridgwater Band. We will celebrate each other and view the auction items that this guidebook describes. As always, the talents and generosity of the Hockaday community are overwhelming, and the delights in store are astonishing. As you celebrate with friends, please remember with gratitude the hundreds of donors and volunteers who make this night possible and toast Jessica Werner Epperson ’96, our Benefit Chair, and Rajani Kapu ’90, our HPA President. Warmly, Dr. Karen Warren Coleman

Thank You from Jessica Werner Epperson ’96 2019 Hockaday Benefit Chair Dear Hockaday Community, For the past year, I have had the pleasure of chairing The Year of the Daisy – A Celebration of Asia, the 2019 Hockaday Parents’ Association Benefit. In this role, I have had the distinct honor of witnessing the remarkable community that comprises Hockaday. This once-a-year, schoolwide celebration of our community is an incredible example of the dynamic, diverse, talented, and committed community of which we are all a part. At Hockaday, the journey of each of the students is made possible by the incredible alumnae, parents, teachers, staff, and Trustees that compose our community. Our daughters benefit every day from the thoughtful generosity of those who have created and cared for this marvelous School and who continue to support it in a myriad of ways. It is this generosity of spirit that has enabled the construction of the remarkable Ann Graves Child Development Center. The establishment of this permanent home for the children and grandchildren of Hockaday’s faculty and staff will nurture and educate the youngest members of our community. In addition, it will serve as a symbol of the generosity of the Hockaday community, while, at the same time, permanently impacting, in a positive way, the lives of the individuals and families who utilize the Child Development Center. The Center will allow Hockaday to attract and retain faculty and staff of the highest caliber, which will, in turn, benefit each and every one of our daughters in immeasurable ways. This spirit of generosity at Hockaday is tremendous, and it has been incredible to see the willingness with which our community supports Hockaday and the awe-inspiring commitment to our School and our children. From Special Occasions to the Raffle to the Silent Auction and Live Auction, hundreds of Hockaday parents and friends have given their time, talent, and enthusiasm to make this Benefit a reality, and ultimately, to support the Child Development Center and, in turn, the students of Hockaday. Our Benefit Committee, along with Holly Hook, the incredible Hockaday Parents’ Association liaison, and Katherine Mathes Bullock ’97 and her team have worked tirelessly and with boundless energy, good cheer, and creativity to bring you this spectacular evening and offerings. And, as you will see on the pages of this program, individuals, businesses, and families in our community and beyond have demonstrated an unparalleled level of support. I hope you will join me in recognizing and thanking them whenever possible. Let’s celebrate Hockaday tonight and come together to raise funds for this most important cause. Thank you for playing a significant role in this exceptional community. With sincere appreciation, Jessica Werner Epperson ’96

Ann Graves Child Development Center to Accommodate Childcare Needs of Our Faculty and Staff For more than 20 years, the Hockaday Child Development Center (HCDC) has served the School by providing top quality child care for the children and grandchildren of Hockaday’s faculty and staff. As infants only six weeks old to toddlers and preschoolers, boys and girls come to the HCDC every day with their mothers and fathers who trust the devoted staff to teach, care for, and love their children, while they, themselves, are teaching Hockaday students in their own classrooms. During these two decades, the HCDC has grown dramatically. Since it opened in 1998, the HCDC has functioned in two temporary portable buildings on the far west side of the campus and has served more than 130 families. Bulging at the seams, the portable buildings have reached maximum capacity with 33 children and 12 full and part-time teachers. Realizing the need for a new facility, the Board of Trustees announced in Fall 2017 that the School would build a new permanent facility for the HCDC. The new Ann Graves Hockaday Child Development Center will help Hockaday recruit and retain talented faculty who are in the early stages of raising a family. The positive benefits that stem from Hockaday teachers knowing that their children are well cared for steps down the hall from their own classrooms are immeasurable. The Ann Graves Hockaday Child Development Center will double the current capacity of the HCDC and will serve up to 64 children. The Hockaday Parents’ Association 2019 Benefit proceeds will be used to fund the construction of the new Ann Graves Child Development Center. With the support of our entire community and your generosity tonight, a permanent home for Hockaday’s Child Development Center will become a reality.

Priceless Starting bid $250

Courtesy of Danaree and Alex Allgood Matt Kaplinsky is a celebrated Texas artist who creates abstracts in a variety of paint media. Kaplinsky works with color and texture directed canvases, but also image-oriented abstracts depending on surrounding influences. Reflections of various 20th century masters can be seen in the thick of his 21st century works. Kaplinsky strives to bring a certain sophisticated roughness into the clean open design of homes and businesses to help provide a sense of balance. This is a beautiful, feminine piece, commissioned specifically for Hockaday with a mix of Gerber (or Gerbera) and Wild (or Shasta) Daisies.

Artist and Illustrator Jane Beaird ’06 is inspired by women’s empowerment, inclusivity, and diversity. This image celebrates the Hockaday community by depicting students of every grade level. As an alumna, Jane remembers Hockaday as an enriching space for young women to find their voice, whether in academics, the arts, or athletics. Hockaday nurtures and encourages that inner strength, as represented by the daisies draped over the students’ shoulders; little symbols of each student’s unique identity. While living in Brooklyn, NY, Jane has worked in fashion design, fine arts, and film/television. She has body-doubled for actress Anne Hathaway since 2014 and has appeared in Law & Order: SVU, The Knick, Ocean’s 8, and Modern Love. She started the illustration studio Quiet Creature in 2016, selling her illustrations at art markets and working with brands like Anthropologie, Ted Baker, Lou & Grey, and Maje. She is thankful for Hockaday encouraging her to always be courageous, curious, and kind.

Live Auction – No.7 “TRANS DIMENSIONAL PORTAL” BY JD MILLER AND AN ARTFUL EVENING WITH THE ARTIST AND FRIENDS Value: $38,500 This is a wonderful opportunity to add a spectacular work of art to your collection while also experiencing a catered dinner by Nick & Sam’s Steakhouse at Samuel Lynne Galleries. Trans Dimensional Portal is a masterpiece created by the award-winning, reflectionist, JD Miller. Reflectionism combines a philosophy of art and a style of painting that is grounded in Asian mindfulness, meditation, and The New Thought philosophy founded in the U.S. in the 19th century, which holds that Infinite Intelligence is everywhere, that spirit is the totality of real things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, sickness originates in the mind, and that “right thinking” has a healing effect. In 21st century terms, Reflectionism is rooted in the law of attraction—the belief that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, a person brings positive or negative experiences into their life. Miller was born in San Diego, California and moved to Texas as a child. He finished his undergraduate career at the University of North Texas and is the recipient of scores of awards. His artwork has been featured across the country. The Reflectionist technique is characterized by a multi-dimensional oil application, and the method and technique—the thick application of oil using painting knives to create a sculptural element within a painting—is new. There are two main components of Reflectionism: following the law of attraction and translating that experience into art on the canvas. With this three-dimensional oil, JD Miller conveys his sense of freedom, his joy in the miracle of creation, and the synchronicity of the universe.
