Summer 2023: Commencement – An Evening to Remember

Page 1

Dear Hockaday Community ,

THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IS A PERFECT TIME TO REFLECT AND REMIND US WHY WE ARE PROUD AND GRATEFUL TO BE PART OF THIS COMMUNITY.

This year was filled with academic accomplishments, innovative teaching, and community celebrations. We cheered for our girls on the fields and in the theater and celebrated their learning throughout the year. We enjoyed beloved Hockaday traditions this spring, including the 109th Commencement, which showcased and celebrated our outstanding students and faculty. It was especially joyful for me this year, as I was able to award a diploma to my youngest daughter, Ella Jaggar ’23!

We continue to be inspired by our girls, and I have no doubt you will be impressed by their accomplishments as you flip through these pages!

Featuring:

Hockaday’s faculty and staff work daily to ensure our students learn in an academically challenging and nurturing environment. This summer, many faculty are taking international trips, attending conferences, and furthering their education. Several faculty and staff have been honored with Hockaday awards and grants this year, and you can read more about them on page 25.

Additionally, we celebrated two retirees at Commencement. I am grateful to Cresencia Garcia (Housekeeping, 21 years) and Mona Rejino (Private Music Instructor, 23 years). I wish them both a fulfilling retirement!

As we wrap up the year, we look forward to celebrating the completion of the Athletics and Wellness Project in the fall. You will be amazed at the transformation of our campus, and we can’t wait to see our girls competing on the fields, running on the GREEN track, and utilizing our new outdoor classroom spaces.

I want to thank the community for your support and encouragement as I began my tenure as the Eugene McDermott Head of School. This is an extraordinary community and an exciting time in the life of this School, and I look forward to the journey ahead.

I hope you have a restful summer, and I can’t wait to see everyone on campus in the fall.

My best,

Believing

Commencement

CLASS OF 2023

MAY 20, 2023

On a beautiful evening in May, the Class of 2023 crossed Ashley H. Priddy Commencement Terrace and received their diplomas at Hockaday’s 109th Commencement. The graduates enjoyed the many time-honored traditions that make the Hockaday Commencement ceremony so special: the walk from Teardrop Garden down the Metzger stairs, the Honor Guard gladiola arch, and the beautiful flower baskets. The entire Hockaday community was thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of these 128 graduating students.

HOCKADAY HAS SHAPED US INTO THE GIRLS WE ARE AND INTO THE PEOPLE WE WILL BE. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL THAT I WAS ABLE TO UNDERGO THAT SHAPING ALONGSIDE MY AMAZING CLASSMATES IN THE CLASS OF 2023. TOGETHER, WE’VE GROWN FROM SIMPLE FRIENDS AND PEERS INTO SOMETHING MUCH MORE EVERLASTING—SISTERS

ZOYA HAQ, Class of 2023 Commencement Speaker

I REALLY DO BELIEVE THAT YOU ONLY TRULY FAIL IF YOU DON’T EMBRACE WHO YOU ARE AND JUST GO FOR IT — IF YOU DON’T TAKE THAT RISK OR TAKE THAT ADVENTURE… IF YOU DON’T POUR YOUR ENTIRE HEART AND GUTS INTO WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

SO, YOU REALLY ONLY FAIL IF YOU DON’T DO SOMETHING — OR DO IT HALFWAY — BECAUSE YOU’RE AFRAID OF FAILING. DON’T BE!

Senior TRADITIONS

SENIOR YEAR AT HOCKADAY IS A SPECIAL TIME.

From highly anticipated privileges such as off-campus lunch and Senior Halloween to end-of-year events such as Return to Your Roots, Senior Heritage Receptions, and Splash Day, these experiences help the Seniors bond as a class and create special memories as they embark on their next adventure. The Class of 2023 has certainly left its mark on Hockaday and will be remembered for its supportive friendships, accomplished scholars, and leadership on the field and stage. Good luck and congratulations, Class of 2023!

RETURN TO YOUR Roots

Seniors who attended Hockaday in the Lower School are invited to return to the Lower School for a “Return to Your Roots” program. The afternoon is a walk down memory lane with Fourth Grade students reading childhood highlights submitted by Seniors and their parents. The girls sing songs from their days at Rotunda Rocks, and their parents create poster boards filled with photos and memories from their time in Lower School.

SENIOR Heritage Receptions

This spring, the rich cultural legacies of Hockaday’s self-identified Seniors were celebrated at the Fifth Annual Asian and Pacific Islander Senior Heritage Reception, the Sixth Annual Latin and Hispanic Senior Heritage Reception, and the 18th Annual Black and African Senior Heritage Reception. The receptions featured speakers selected by the students, special food, music, and traditions.

ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HONOREES

BLACK AND AFRICAN HONOREES

LATIN AND HISPANIC HONOREES

SPLASH Day

The final Daisy Day and Senior Splash Day was a wet and wild day of fun! Students decorated their skirts with their college branding and drenched their advisors, college counselors, and underclassmen while enjoying lunch, games, and water slides.

Form DAY

Form Day looked a little different this year due to potential inclement weather. However, students made the most of it with an Upper School lip sync battle! Each Advisory created their own choreography, then the Form voted on the winning team. Then, Forms I, II, and III battled it out! While Form I displayed excellent choreography and Form II showed just how spirited they could be, it was Form III who emerged victorious, with participation from each member of the Class of 2024 and some special appearances from faculty. Congratulations to the Class of 2024, who came out on top overall and will hold the spirit stick for the 2023–2024 School Year!

Middle SchoolGRANDPARENTS DAY

Middle School students were delighted to welcome their grandparents and grandfriends to campus in April! Students brought their guests to class, showed them the campus, and introduced them to friends and teachers.

Middle School SPIRIT

GREEN AND WHITE Day

One of Hockaday’s most beloved Middle School traditions is the year-long competition as students vie to earn points for either the Green or White team during PE and at the end of the year, participate in Green and White Day, complete with a pep rally, dance-off, water games, and a tug-of-war competition to earn points. Each team earns points for Spirit, Winning, and Sportsmanship. Congratulations to the White team, which earned the honor of their flag being flown outside of Penson Gym for the entire next school year!

5TH GRADE Olympics

The Fifth Grade Olympics were a huge success! Girls competed for a country, and medals were given for basketball, field hockey, rowing, table tennis, soccer, swimming, and track and field. Students learned about the Olympic values and participated in opening and closing ceremonies.

Fine ARTS

HOCKADAY Theatre

“After Juliet” by Sharman McDonald takes place in Verona immediately after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The teens of the town led by Rosaline (Romeo’s first love) take on the power void and old rivalries as they deal with the emotion related to their loss. The Hockaday Repertory Company performed the play at this year’s ISAS Arts Festival and in the Lacerte Family Black Box Theater this spring.

HOCKADAY Debate

The Debate team consisting of Sanika Agarwalla (Class of 2024), Diya Hegde (Class of 2024), Aarnah Kurella (Class of 2024), Evita Nino (Class of 2024), Sidney Murray (Class of 2024), and Ariana Wang (Class of 2024) and coached by Chuck Walts, won runner-up in the 22nd Annual Brewer Foundation/New York University International Public Policy Forum (IPPF) debate competition on Saturday, May 6 – winning a $3,500 prize. The final debate was hosted at The Harold Pratt House in New York City. Hockaday debater Sanika Agarwalla won the inaugural John E. Sexton Award – recognizing the outstanding speaker during the Finals Debate. The “Elite Eight” teams taking part in the IPPF Finals emerged from a field of more than 220 teams, representing high schools in 31 U.S. states and 22 countries. “In a competition against many of the most accomplished debaters in the world, the students representing The Hockaday School excelled. They exhibited strong written and oral debate skills,” said William A. Brewer III, partner at Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors and founder of the IPPF. “We are proud to recognize their achievements as this year's IPPF Runner-Up. We also salute the inaugural winner of the John E. Sexton Award – Hockaday student Sanika Agarwalla.”

HOCKADAY Choir

The Upper School Concert Choir went on tour to New York City and had the honor of singing as members of the Masterworks Festival Chorus in Lincoln Center as they performed Dan Forrest’s “Jubilate Deo” alongside a professional orchestra. The highlights of the trip were meeting with the Tony Award-winning star of "Kimberly Akimbo" and Hockaday Alumna, Victoria Clark ’78, and working with Craig Hella Johnson (conductor) and Dan Forrest (composer) during the rehearsals and performance. Choir also showcased their range with the spring concert “Heartbreakers: Breakup Anthems of the Ages.” It featured the music of Taylor Swift, Adele, Beyoncé, Gloria Gaynor, Lesley Gore, "Oklahoma!", "Thoroughly Modern Millie," The Beatles, Brahms, Schumann, and more!

HOCKADAY Orchestra

The Hockaday Orchestra honored the Class of 2023 members with the annual Senior Solos Concert. Beginning more than 20 years ago, the Hockaday Senior orchestra members select pieces from Broadway to Tchaikovsky to perform with the orchestra. This annual tradition is a favorite and one our Seniors never forget.

SPRING Dance

Hockadance took to the stage in April for their annual Spring Concert, led entirely by students. Dancers selected songs, dance styles, choreography, and costumes, and used feedback from the judges at the ISAS Fine Arts Festival to complete their pieces.

UPPER SCHOOL Art

Students showcased their visual arts pieces in the Ann Bower '67 Gallery during receptions and exhibitions throughout the spring.

THE JOHN KILLION MEMORIAL AWARD

Dr. Claire Cothren, Upper School English Teacher

Faculty and STAFF

The Killion Award was established by Mary Louise McNeese Forteith JC ’42 and Anne Elizabeth Zimmermann ’91, in memory of John Killion. The award is voted on by the Senior Class to honor and recognize a Hockaday teacher who goes out of his or her way to help students in and out of the classroom and who makes the learning atmosphere an exciting one, thus exemplifying those qualities so loved in Mr. Killion. This year, the Seniors selected Dr. Claire Cothren. Claire joined the Upper School faculty in 2015 and currently teaches English in addition to working as an Instructor for the Hockaday Writing Center.

The Class of 2023 said, “Dr. Cothren is a light. She is always incredibly joyful and knows exactly how to brighten up a student’s day. Even when it is not convenient for her, she makes herself available to students and assists them in any way possible. She shows incredible thoughtfulness when working with students, even those whom she does not personally teach. She always remains engaged with students and makes them feel as though their paper is the most interesting thing that she has ever read. If you go to Dr. Cothren, she will be your biggest cheerleader. Her infectious smile is easily recognized throughout the Hocka-halls, and the Class of 2023 truly appreciates all of the things she has done to help them succeed.”

In 2006, the Ellen Higginbotham Rogers Award for Faculty Excellence was established in honor of Ellen Higginbotham Rogers ’59 to recognize teaching excellence. It is given by the Alumnae Association annually to a faculty or staff member who makes an important impact on the students and the education the School provides them. In April, the Alumnae Association selected three finalists for the 2023 award, from which the recipient was announced at the end of the school year. The finalists are Scott Bowman, Leslie Gardiner, and Laura Day, with Scott Bowman being named as the 2023 recipient of the Ellen Higginbotham Rogers Award for Faculty Excellence.

Alumnae WEEKEND

WELCOME Home!

Alumnae Weekend was a wonderful way to reconnect on campus and celebrate our shared Hockaday history. Alumnae from around the country returned to campus for the Alumnae Day Luncheon, Family Picnic, and Alumnae Networking Cocktail Party. Members of the Class of 1973, who celebrated their 50th Reunion, wrote letters to their Hockaday Fourth Grade pen pals and enjoyed a special reception with their new friends. The Hockaday School is grateful to Ann Addyman Lawrence ’61 and Dana Lawrence Jhaveri ’90 (pictured below left) for their leadership as chairs of the event.
