Hockaday’s Institute for Social Impact uses the power of engaged, hands-on learning to prepare our students for leadership in their communities, work places, and society. The Institute allows students to engage with diverse partners, learn from civic leaders, tackle projects with community impact, and put their creative ideas into action for lasting social benefit.
Each year students conduct research at university and professional labs which concludes with the annual “Fall Poster Symposium.” Working on real-world projects allows students to enact relevant change and empowers young women in the field of science. Students share authorship on publications in peerreviewed journals, and our students attend and present at scientific conferences.
With the support of a faculty mentor, students with a particular interest may pursue an experiential, project-based, or real-world learning experience either through personalized learning or by taking advantage of local partnerships. Recent courses include: Exploring the Food Desert Problem in Big Cities; Playwriting and Dramatic Studies; and Mental Illness and Popular Media.

One of Hockaday’s Four Cornerstones, Athletics plays an integral role in the lives of Hockaday students. Offering 13 varsity sports, Hockaday athletics provides the opportunity to be tested with myriad challenges; handling failure, working with a diverse group of people, facing personal weaknesses and strengths, experiencing the importance of teamwork, humility, self-discipline, and focus. In addition to competitive athletics, each student enjoys the value and benefits that are part of Hockaday’s physical education, recreation, health, and wellness programs.
The arts are alive and thriving at Hockaday and offer a unique crucible where knowledge, creativity, innovation, and initiative all converge. Our robust program in the performing arts includes Choir, Dance, Orchestra, Debate, Theater and Technical Theater. Beyond the traditional classroom, students have exceptional opportunities to hone their performance skills in our phenomenal campus venues and on the larger stages of Dallas. In addition, musicians and vocalists can advance their talents with private instructors through our on-campus private music lessons.
Developing the visual art and observational skills of Hockaday students is one of the core missions of the School. With courses in Studio Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, Photography, and Film, students are given the chance to explore and create in diverse mediums and in collaborative settings. Our programs are hands-on, experimental, and process oriented, while providing opportunities for intellectual and analytical discovery. Art students participate in exhibitions on campus, in the Dallas community, and at the annual Independent Schools Association of the Southwest Arts Festival.

Beyond the classrooms, athletic fields, stages, and art studios, Hockaday students pursue their passions through councils, boards, and student-initiated clubs. Hockaday clubs foster a sense of unity while providing space for sharing ideas and interests, developing leadership, and just having fun. Organized into service, academic, and special interest groups, student clubs run the gamut, focusing on areas such as diversity, politics, service, social justice, the arts, and technology. Clubs are driven by students’ interests and their activities are student-directed.
Leadership is built into the very fabric of a Hockaday education. Our girls are prepared to lead in a rapidly changing, complex, and connected world. Whether a student is the captain of the Debate Team, editor of The Fourcast newspaper, founder of the Girls Giving Global club, President of House Council, leading a class discussion, listening to her peers’ perspectives, or living by the Honor Code, each girl at Hockaday is celebrated for her individuality and inspired to lead with resolve.

Our residents come to Hockaday from the United States and around the world, and revel in the excitement of creating a cohesive community of sisters and friends from a diverse population. From the first day boarders arrive on campus, they are warmly welcomed into their Hockaday home. Within the residential community, there are numerous leadership opportunities. The girls elected to House Council represent boarding students by advocating the ideas and opinions of their peers to administrators. Additionally, prefects serve as role models and specifically assist with new student transition to Hockaday, as they check in frequently with the residents on their hall. Many boarders visit PK–4th
Grade classrooms weekly to share ideas and participate in activities as part of the Lower School Boarder Buddy Program. They form bonds with our youngest students that extend beyond the classroom to our all-school spirit events and celebrations.
