Centennial Party of the Century Invitation

Page 1

February 2014

Dear Hockaday Community, A once-in-a-lifetime milestone deserves a once-in-a-lifetime party. At Hockaday we relish the opportunity to celebrate our Centennial year. In this invitation you will see a celebratory week planned for April 8–12. I hope that you will join the Hockaday community on more than one occasion during this most special Centennial Week. We will start the week with “Spotlights,” an Upper School and Middle School fine arts showcase on April 8, celebrating music from musicals performed at Hockaday throughout our 100 years. The performances will include musical selections from past Hockaday 8th grade musicals and Upper School musicals, with soloists and small ensembles – all sure to impress! The Lower School Centennial Musical on April 9 will include Pre-K through 4th grade girls and their families and guests – a rare opportunity to bring together the entire Lower School. The very next day, April 10, Upper School students will continue the theatrics in their collaboration with St. Mark’s for the 2014 Upper School Spring Play, The Bald Soprano and The Lesson. Adding to the excitement of the spring play’s opening night, on April 10 the students will also enjoy the Centennial All-Student Luncheon that will relaunch our Hockaday Families program. Tony Award-winning actress and alumna, Victoria Clark ’78, will be the featured speaker at this luncheon. All of our girls and Faculty and Staff will enjoy a family-style meal together, catered by the Food Services, in celebration of 100 years of excellence in girls education. It is certainly an exciting time to be a student at Hockaday, but our celebration extends to the entire community. The Centennial Luncheon Honoring Alumnae on Alumnae Day, April 11, is open to the Hockaday Community, including non-Alumnae, in this unique year. I encourage you to attend with your daughters, of all ages, for this memorable luncheon, where we will welcome past Hockaday parent, former First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush. Saturday, April 12, will find Hockaday a busy campus, indeed. We start our morning with the Centennial Alumnae Affinity Breakfasts and race through the Hockaday neighborhood in the Daisy Dash. We will then spend the afternoon enjoying each other’s company on our magnificent campus at the Centennial Family Picnic and Concert. Sit down, grab some delicious food, and relax while listening to the music of alumna and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb ’86 in Hoblitzelle. All of this celebrating will culminate that night in our spectacular crescendo to Hockaday’s Centennial festivities, The Party of the Century. The evening will include a four-course seated dinner, musical performances, fireworks, and an After Party. It is an event you will not want to miss! Enclosed in this mailing is a list of underwriting levels, giving you the chance to support these unique events. I am grateful and humbled by the support shown by so many of you. Proceeds from the Centennial Weekend will benefit the Ela Hockaday Fund for Faculty Excellence. Finally, I offer my deepest thanks to the Chairs and countless volunteers of all our Centennial celebrations. We could not have orchestrated this incredible year without you. I look forward to seeing you this spring.

Warm regards,

Kim Wargo Eugene McDermott Headmistress
