The Women’s Hockey East Association will celebrate its 11th season of play after officially commencing league action in the fall of 2002. In 10 years, the conference has emerged as one of the top women’s ice hockey conferences in the nation, having sent six teams to the Frozen Four and 13 teams to the NCAA Tournament, which includes the most successful season in 2010-2011, sending Boston University and Boston College to the Frozen Four with the Terriers making the league’s second appearance in the NCAA National Championship Game. In 2012, the Boston University Terriers captured their second WHEA Tournament Title against Providence in double overtime in March at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center in Hyannis. The Northeastern Huskies earned their first regular-season championship in school history last February. Northeastern senior goaltender Florence Schelling was named the Hockey East Player of the Year for the second time in her career, while teammate Kendall Coyne earned Rookie of the Year honors. Maine head coach Maria Lewis and Northeastern head coach Dave Flint were named Co-Coach of the Year, the first time in league history that two coaches were bestowed the honor. Hockey East announced 89 student-athletes were named to the league’s 2011-12 All-Academic Team in the conferences 10th season of play in June. Vermont sophomore defenseman Megan Dalbec and Maine freshman forward Katelyn Massey shared the distinction as Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete, as the duo earned perfect 4.0 GPA’s for the season. Dalbec received the award for the second consecutive season with the Catamounts. The league also honored seven student-athletes that received “Distinguished Scholar” status. Those earning “Distinguished Scholar” status achieved a 3.0 or better in each semester over four varsity seasons. Boston College led the way with three athletes earning the honor in goaltender Kiera Kingston, defenseman Kristin Regan and forward Megan Shea, while Maine had two honorees in defenseman Melissa Gagnon and Ashley Norum. Boston University defenseman Kasey Boucher and Connecticut goaltender Alexandra Garcia were also bestowed the honor. In February 2007, the league debuted its inaugural “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The one-day event was hosted by Hockey East schools as a way to establish a greater fan base, to raise needed funds, and to work with the specific charities to raise awareness for both the league and the specific cause. In the initial year, close to $20,000 was donated back to local breast cancer charities (Friends of Mel’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society), vastly exceeding expectations. The sixth annual “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” will have an event on every WHEA campus this season, as well as participation by all of the Hockey East men’s teams over the course of a two weekends. History - As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current status as an established NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that initially had varsity programs for women: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence. The uncertainty remained until a split in the Eastern College Athletic Conference grouped the five aforementioned programs into a separate league, the ECAC Women’s Eastern League, along with three other unaffiliated programs. Seeking league solidarity, administrators from the five Hockey East institutions acted. In September of 2001, the long-incubated idea became a reality when the athletic directors voted to found the new women’s league under the existing Hockey East banner, with play scheduled to begin no later than the 2004-05 season. The five schools with varsity programs entered as charter members with the stipulation that any other Hockey East school that added a varsity women’s program in the future would be freely admitted to the league. Expediting the process in the interests of the participating teams, the league and the sport itself, Commissioner Joe Bertagna worked with a selected task force to successfully prepare the Hockey East women’s league for launch in the 2002-03 season, two years ahead of schedule. An important part of that process was the acceptance of an invitation extended to the University of Connecticut to join the newly formed league as its sixth active member. The triumphant effort immediately afforded the participating administrators a stronger voice in the advancement of their women’s ice hockey programs and alleviated the ECAC of continuing the maintenance of the Women’s Eastern League. Players, fans, coaches and administrators alike were all anticipating the intensified competition created by the new circle of teams that were already familiar rivals. In 2005, the Women’s Hockey East Association welcomed the addition of two more teams to its growing family, Boston University and the University of Vermont. For BU, it marked the inaugural season for women’s hockey as a varsity sport. The league athletic directors voted in June of 2012 to expand the playoff format and now all eight teams will qualify for the playoffs beginning in 2012-13 season, as opposed to six and four in previous seasons. Although the Women’s Hockey East Association is still in its infancy, its member programs have storied histories that include several championships and individual awards at the highest levels of play. The first 13 ECAC championships were shared among New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence, all charter members of Hockey East. Northeastern forward Brooke Whitney was named the recipient of the 2002 Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top female collegiate player, an honor first won by New Hampshire’s Brandy Fisher in 1998. Had the award been in existence beforehand, it surely would have been won at some point by Cammi Granato, a three-time ECAC Player of the Year who led Providence to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Five years later, in 1998, alongside nine other alums of what are now Hockey East programs, Granato captained Team USA to the Olympic gold medal during the first Olympic tournament that featured women’s ice hockey as a medal sport. Granato was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in October of 2010 for her contributions to the sport. Beginning in 2009, the WHEA athletic directors voted to honor the league Player of the Year with the Cammi Granato Award. Perhaps the proudest legacy that the Women’s Hockey East Association has established is the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The most prestigious off-ice honor, and arguably the highest overall honor in the sport, the Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen each year and encompasses both male and female athletes in all divisions. Its winners have demonstrated outstanding contributions to society through leadership in charity work and volunteerism. Northeastern senior forward Missy Elumba was the 2009 recipient, as the fifth Hockey East student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor. Elumba was the 14th all-time recipient and joined former Husky goaltender Chanda Gunn, who received the award in 2004, as the second athlete in Northeastern women’s hockey history. BC’s Sarah Carlson received it in 2005, making Women’s Hockey East the first league to boast back-to-back winners.

2 0 1 3 WOMEN ’ S HOCKEY EAST CHAM P IONSHI P TO U R NAMENT The regular season will determine the eight teams that qualify for the 11th Hockey East Championship Tournament at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center (HYCC). In June of 2012, the league athletic directors voted to expand the tournament field to eight teams at the annual conference meetings. The four high seeds will host a quarterfinal round game on the weekend of March 1-3. The four advancing teams will then be reseeded in the semifinal round on Saturday, March 9th. The winners will qualify for the 11th annual Hockey East Championship Game on Sunday, March 10th. The Boston University Terriers win their second WHEA Tournament Championship in school history in double overtime at the HYCC last March in Hyannis, Mass.

K athy W ynters – A ssociate C ommissioner

Kathy Wynters is entering her seventh season as Associate Commissioner, eigthteenth year overall with the conference. As Joe Bertagna’s chief assistant, her primary responsibilities include the day-to-day operations of both the men’s and women’s leagues, along with the administration of tournaments and special events, marketing and branding initiatives, and the licensing and sponsorship programs. Prior to her promotion, Wynters served Hockey East as Director of Marketing and Special Events from 2002-06. Wynters was the driving force behind the creation of both “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” and the Hockey East Kids’ Club. In five years, the Skating Strides program has raised almost $200,00 for breast cancer awareness and research, while at the same time increased attendance at women’s hockey games and gave the student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. In 2012, the league raised a single-season record of $45,215 for breast cancer charities. “Skating Strides” was nationally recognized twice (2007 & 2009) by NACDA/NACMA with medals for “Single Day Attendance Promotion of an Olympic Sport”. During Kathy’s tenure, the Hockey East corporate sponsorship program has grown to include several new partnerships, many breaking ground beyond traditional hockey companies. In addition, the Hockey East licensing program has also expanded to include many new licensees, as well as increased revenues from licensed merchandise, including an expanded offering at the conference championships. Kathy is instrumental in both the marketing efforts and logistical operations behind Hockey East’s special events, including two Frozen Fenway events and the 10th Anniversary celebration. Wynters previously served Hockey East as Assistant Commissioner during the late 80’s and early 90’s, before going on to work for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, spending three years as a Marketing Director, coordinating licensing and souvenir merchandising. Wynters also spent five years as marketing manager for PictureTel Corporation. A native of Quincy, MA, the former Kathy Walsh earned a B.S. degree in marketing from Providence College in 1982. She began her career while an undergraduate, as a three-year intern with the men’s hockey team. Following graduation, she served the Friars in two capacities; first as Assistant Sports Information Director and then as Director of Athletic Marketing. While at PC, and before Hockey East had a full-time staff, Wynters worked with former PC athletic director, and then Commissioner, Lou Lamoriello on the launch of the conferName Years Occupation ence in 1983, and then coordinated the first three Hockey East championship tournaments Chris Aughe 1st Production Manager (1985-87). Pete Souris enters his sixth season with the conference office and was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in the summer of 2010, after serving for three years at Director of Public Relations. He was very involved in the 25th anniversary celebration, as he oversaw the production of the league’s 25th anniversary DVD and has played an integral role in the improvements to hockeyeastonline.com over the last two years. Souris brings 15 years of experience to the post, and had been affiliated with the UNH athletic department since he was a student in the mid-1990’s. After earning his BS in Kinesiology: Sport Studies in December of 2001, Souris was promoted to the post of assistant director of media relations the following summer, and three years later was named associate director. In 2006, he also assumed responsibility for managing the department’s web site (unhwildcats.com). In addition to serving as the primary media contact for the UNH men’s hockey team for seven seasons, Souris was the lead contact for the school’s women’s volleyball team for 10 years. Souris also served as primary media coordinator for the NCAA men’s hockey Northeast Regionals in Manchester, NH, in 2004 and 2007. He has also worked the last 11 Frozen Fours, dating back to 1999-2000. Souris has worked for the past two seasons as the primary video replay technician for the Boston Bruins. He also does freelance television work as a graphics associate producer, scorebug operator and official/talent statistician. Souris, a 1995 graduate of Beverly High School, resides in Beverly, Mass.

D ave L ezenski - S upervisor of O fficials Dave Lezenski has worked with Hockey East for the past seven seasons, assisting the Supervisor of Officials for the first four seasons and was promoted as the Supervisor of Officials for the women’s league in the fall of 2009. Lezenski also works for the NCAA during the men’s and women’s national tournaments with video replay and officials evaluation. The former NIHOA and ECAC veteran official is a native of Lynn, Mass. Professionally, he serves as a Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health in Billerica Public Schools and is actively involved with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. Lezenski resides in Lowell, Mass.

The Maine Black Bears (30 pts.) were picked fifth and New Hampshire (28 pts.) was selected sixth. The Black Bears are looking to build on fourth place finish from a season ago. Senior forward Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) will pace the team on offense, The Boston College Eagles were voted by the eight league head while Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) will return for one more coaches to win the regular-season title this year with 54 points season in Orono, anchoring the team in goal, as the team returns 14 and five of eight first-place votes. EAGLES TABBED TO TAKE HOME WHEA CROWN IN 2012-2013 SEASON

Northeastern was selected third with 44 points, after winning their first WHEA Regular-Season title in school history last February. The Huskies have a league-high 21 letterwinners returning and 91% of the team’s offense from last season. Sophomore forward and WHEA Rookie of the Year Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) and senior co-captain/WHEA Second-Team All-Star Casey Pickett (Wilmington, Mass.) will lead the Huskies’ offensive attack this season. Coyne led the league last season with 19 goals in league contests. Northeastern will have to fill the shoes of two-time WHEA Player of the Year and All-American Florence Schelling in goal, who they lost to graduation this past spring. Providence College (37 points) was selected fourth under 14th year head coach and two-time WHEA Coach of the Year Bob Deraney. The Friars also have to deal with the loss of a world class goaltender in Genevieve Lacasse to graduation. The team returns 15 letterwinners from a season ago and will look for junior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) and senior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ont.) to step up with the departure of the teams top three scorers. The duo combined for 31 points in conference play last season in 21 contests.

“2013 WHEA Skating Strides” Saturday, January 19th Vermont at Maine Sunday, January 20th Providence at Northeastern Thursday, January 24th Northeastern at New Hampshire Friday, January 25th Boston University at Vermont Saturday, January 26th Boston College at Providence Sunday, January 27th New Hampshire at Boston University Connecticut at Boston College Entering its seventh season, the Hockey East Skating Strides program has raised nearly $200,000 toward the fight against breast cancer, including a single-season record of $45,215 in 2012. At the same time, the program has earned interest conference wide, with the increased attendance at, and the awareness of, the women's hockey programs at all eight member institutions. Skating Strides has also given the studentathletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. Charitable donations have been made by Skating Strides to several New England organizations, including the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine; the Gloria Gemma Foundation in Providence, R.I.; the Vermont Cancer Center in Burlington, Vt. and two Massachusetts organizations: the Friends of Mel Foundation and the Ellie Fund. All proceeds from Skating Strides 2013 will benefit the following breast cancer charities:

CAMMI GRANATO PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

This honor is awarded by the head coaches to a player from those nominated for consideration, which was renamed the Cammi Granato Player of the Year Award in the fall of 2008. The player receiving this recognition has demonstrated superior play and leadership for her team. Granato had a legendary four-year career at Providence College, establishing many scoring records for the Friars (139 goals in 99 games). She captured ECAC Player of the Year honors in three consecutive years from 1991-93, while leading the team to back-to-back conference titles in 1992 and 1993. A 15-year member of the U.S. Women’s National Team beginning in 1990, Granato is the program’s all-time scoring leader. She achieved international fame by captaining Team USA to the gold medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. Northeastern senior goaltender Florence Schelling (Oberengstringen, Switzerland) was named the unanimous recipient of the Cammi Granato Award, as Athletic Player of the Year for the second time in her career on Friday, March 2nd at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis, Mass. Schelling, the WHEA Goaltending Champion and Army ROTC Three Stars Award winner, finished league play with a 15-3-3 record to go along with a 1.27 GAA and .956 save percentage, a new league single-season record and six shutouts. Her 580 saves this season ranks sixth all-time among conference netminders. She allowed two goals or less in 17 of her 21 league starts and amassed 30+ saves on eight occasions for the No. 1 seed Huskies. Schelling finished Hockey East play with a .940 career save percentage, which is now a new league benchmark and 1731 career saves, ranking fourth all-time among conference netminders. This award is also voted by the head coaches and is given to the first-year player who has shown skill, ability and leadership beyond that expected of a player in her rookie year. Pro Ambitions Hockey is the presenting sponsor of the Hockey East Rookie of the Year Award. Northeastern University forward Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) took home Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year honors, marking the first Husky player in the program’s history to receive that distinction. Coyne led league play with 19 goals in 19 games for the top seed Northeastern Huskies. Her 30 points and 19 goals by a freshman were second most in league history to go along with a league best +27 plus/minus rating. She notched a point in 17 of 19 league contests for the Huskies and recorded seven multi-point efforts in conference action. Coyne’s 133 shots were second most in league play. COACH OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the head coach who is considered to have demonstrated the highest number of significant accomplishments over the course of the season as voted by the conference’s head coaches. Maine’s Maria Lewis and Northeastern’s Dave Flint were voted as Co-Coach of Year. Lewis led Maine to their best season in Hockey East finishing in a tie for fourth place, posting 11 conference wins with 24 points, while Flint led Northeastern to its first regular-season title in school history with a 15-3-3 record and 33 points in the league standings. It’s the second time in the conference’s history that coaches have shared the award, the only other occasion was in 2004-2005. HOCKEY EAST ALL-STARS BATTLE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM AT UNH FOR SECOND TIME ON NOV. 22, 2009

BC’s Kelli Stack The Hockey East All-Stars faced the 2010 U.S. National Team at UNH’s Whittemore Center

The Women’s Hockey East Association, in conjunction with USA Hockey and the University of New Hampshire, host the second WHEA All-Star game on Sunday, November 22, at UNH’s Whittemore Center, as part of Team USA’s Qwest Tour. The tour is designed to pit the U.S. Women’s National Team against elite-level competition in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. The top players from each of the eight Hockey East teams will be selected to represent the league in an All-Star-style competition against the 2010 U.S. National Team, which won a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, B.C. Team USA’s roster had a great showing of WHEA alums and current players including: UNH alum Kacey Bellamy, Boston College’s Molly Schuas and Kelli Stack, along with PC alum Karen Thatcher. BC head coach Katie King served as the WHEA All-Stars head coach. Nov. 22, 2009 recap: Hockey East put up a good fight and held Team USA to their lowest goal output of the Qwest Tour, with only four goals. Despite the 4-0 loss, WHEA was also able to stop all power play attempts as Team USA went 0-6 on the power play. Northeastern’s Florence Schelling was named the Hockey East All-Stars Player of the Game with her standout performance in goal, stopping 19 of the 20 shots she faced. Dec. 11, 2005 recap: The WHEA All-Stars jumped out to a surprising 2-0 first-period lead thanks to goals by Boston University’s Cara Hendry and Maine defenseman Kelly Law. But the National Team came storming back with two goals in the first 2:07 of the second period and it was a dogfight the rest of the way. Team USA got the bulk of the shots-on-goal, and finally grabbed the lead midway through the third when former Harvard star Angela Ruggiero got the first of two quick goals leading the team to a 5-2 victory. UConn goalie Kaitlyn Shain was impressive against the high-powered Olympians, stopping 41 shots, while former Northeastern All-American Chanda Gunn was in net for Team USA and finished with 10 saves. “This Hockey East Team is probably the college team that extended us the most,” said former Team USA coach Ben Smith. UConn’s Heather Linstad, the senior member of women’s Hockey East coaching fraternity served as head coach of the All-Star squad.

Presented annually since 1997-98 to the top player in women’s college ice hockey, the Patty Kazmaier Award was first won by Brandy Fisher of UNH and later by Northeastern’s Brooke Whitney. NU goaltender Chanda Gunn and Providence defenseman Kelli Halcisak were two of the 10 players nominated nationally in each of the first two seasons of Hockey East play, and Gunn was one of three finalists in 2003-04.
