WOMEN’S HOCKEY EAST ASSOCIATION

The Women’s Hockey East Association celebrates its 16th season of play in 2017-18. Over the first 15 years, the league has emerged as one of the top women’s ice hockey conferences in the nation, having sent 11 teams to the Frozen Four and 22 teams to the NCAA Tournament. In 2011 and 2013, both Boston College and Boston University advanced to the women’s Frozen Four, and the Terriers moved on to the NCAA championship game on both occasions. Last season, Boston College played in its third consecutive Frozen Four. In 2017, the Boston College Eagles captured their third Hockey East Tournament title, repeating as the league champions for the first time in program history. As the Hockey East Tournament Champion, BC was presented with the renamed Bertagna Trophy in honor of the Women’s Hockey East conference’s founding commissioner Joe Bertagna. The Eagles were also represented in the three major awards at the postseason banquet, with BC’s Megan Keller taking home the Cammi Granato Award as the league’s best player. Keller will take the 2017-18 season off as she prepares for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games with Team USA. Providence’s Bob Deraney was named the Coach of Year for the third time in his career behind the Friars’ bench, while Providence’s Whitney Dove and Maine’s Tereza Vanisova split rookie of the year accolades. A record 124 student-athletes were named to the league’s 201617 All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing. Twelve women achieved a perfect 4.0 to share honors as the Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete. Those players include goaltenders Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./UConn) and Lea-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Que./Merrimack), defensemen Meghan Martin (Newport, Vt./Merrimack) and Paige Sorensen (Plymouth, Minn./Merrimack), and forwards Annie Boeckers (Otsego, Minn./ Merrimack), Natasia Burzynski (Rye, N.H./Providence), Abigail Chapman (Beverley Hills, Mich./New Hampshire), Marie Delarbre (Fussen, Germany/Merrimack), Kate Haslett (Rothesay, New Brunswick/New Hampshire), Madison Morey (Fairbanks, Alaska/Merrimack), Kourtney Menches (Greer, S.C./Vermont), and Lindsay Roethke (Buffalo, Minn./ UConn). Five players reached “Distinguished Scholar” status in 201617, having qualified for the All-Academic team in each of four seasons of varsity play, while 21 others are three-time honorees. In February 2007, the league debuted its inaugural “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The one-day event was hosted by Hockey East schools as a way to establish a greater fan base, to raise needed funds, and to work with the specific charities to raise awareness for both the league and the specific cause. In the initial year, close to $20,000 was donated back to local breast cancer charities Friends of Mel’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society, vastly exceeding expectations. Last year the league raised over $30,000 to bring the 10-year total to over $300,000. “Skating Strides” has won two national awards at NACMA in the “Single Day Attendance Promotion” category in 2007 and 2009, and in 2016 Kathy Wynters was honored at the one hundred, a fundraising and awareness initiative that honors those that have displayed a commitment to fighting cancer. The 11th annual “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” will have an event on each WHEA campus this season, as well as participation by all of the Hockey East men’s teams over the course of the second half of the season. As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current position as an established NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East needed to consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that initially had varsity programs for women: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence. Discussions about this proposed league continued until a split in the Eastern College Athletic Conference grouped the five aforementioned programs into a separate league alongside three other unaffiliated programs. This newly formed eight-team division was dubbed the ECAC Women’s Eastern League. Seeking league solidarity, administrators from the five Hockey East institutions acted almost immediately to create a new conference. In September of 2001, the long-incubated idea became a reality

when the athletic directors voted to found the new women’s league under the existing Hockey East banner, with play scheduled to begin no later than the 2004-05 season. The five schools with varsity programs entered as charter members with the stipulation that any other Hockey East school that added a varsity women’s program in the future would be freely admitted to the league. In 2015-16, Hockey East welcomed Merrimack as the newest member of the women’s ranks under that clause. Expediting the process in the interest of the participating teams, the league, and the sport itself, Commissioner Joe Bertagna worked with a selected task force to successfully prepare the Hockey East women’s league for launch in the 2002-03 season, two years ahead of schedule. An important part of that process was the acceptance of an invitation extended to the University of Connecticut to join the newly formed league as its sixth active member. The triumphant effort immediately afforded the participating administrators a stronger voice in the advancement of their women’s ice hockey programs and alleviated the ECAC of continuing the maintenance of the ECAC Women’s Eastern League. Players, fans, coaches and administrators alike anticipated the intensified competition created by a new circle of teams that had already been such familiar rivals. In 2005, the Women’s Hockey East Association welcomed the addition of two additional teams to its growing family: Boston University and the University of Vermont. For BU, it marked the inaugural season for women’s hockey as a varsity sport. The league athletic directors voted in June of 2012 to expand the playoff format, allowing all eight teams within the conference to qualify for the playoffs beginning after the 2012-13 regular season. The significant jump was contrasted with six teams and four teams in previous seasons. While the Women’s Hockey East Association continues to grow, adding Holy Cross as its 10th member in 2018-19, its member programs have storied histories that include several championships and individual awards at the highest levels of play. The first 13 ECAC championships were shared among New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence, all charter members of the Women’s Hockey East Association. Northeastern forward Brooke Whitney was named the recipient of the 2002 Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top female collegiate player, an honor first won by New Hampshire’s Brandy Fisher in 1998. Had the award been in existence beforehand, it surely would have been won at some point by Cammi Granato, a three-time ECAC Player of the Year who led Providence to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Five years later, in 1998, alongside nine other alums of what are now Women’s Hockey East Association programs, Granato captained Team USA to the Olympic gold medal during the first Olympic tournament that featured women’s ice hockey as a medal sport. Granato was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in October of 2010 for her contributions to the sport. Beginning in 2009, the WHEA athletic directors voted to honor the league Player of the Year with the Cammi Granato Award. Perhaps the proudest legacy that the Women’s Hockey East Association has established is the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The most prestigious off-ice honor, and arguably the highest overall honor in the sport, the Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen each year and encompasses both male and female athletes in all divisions. Its winners have demonstrated outstanding contributions to society through leadership in charity work and volunteerism. Northeastern senior forward Missy Elumba was the 2009 recipient, as the fifth Hockey East student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor. Elumba was the 14th all-time recipient and joined former Husky goaltender Chanda Gunn, who received the award in 2004, as the second athlete in Northeastern women’s hockey history. BC’s Sarah Carlson received the award in 2005, making Women’s Hockey East the first league to boast back-to-back winners. The 2017-18 season marks Women Hockey East’s 16th season on the ice, and the fourth time the Olympics have coincided with a league schedule. Boston College’s Megan Keller and Kali Flanagan will join Team USA at the Winter Games, while former Hockey East players Kacey Bellamy (UNH), Emily Pfalzer (BC), Alex Carpenter (BC), Kendall Coyne (NU), and Amanda Pelkey (UVM) will also join the U.S. ranks. #

HOCKEY EAST STAFF Kathy Wynters – Associate Commissioner LEAGUE STAFF

Kathy Wynters is entering her 12th season as Associate Commissioner, 23rd year overall with the conference. As Joe Bertagna’s chief assistant, her primary responsibilities include the day-to-day and business operations of both the men’s and women’s leagues, along with the administration of the two championship tournaments, and special events like Frozen Fenway and the Belfast Friendship Four Tournament. She served as Tournament Manager of the 2015 Frozen Four, and oversees both the Hockey East licensing and sponsorship programs. Prior to her promotion, Wynters served Hockey East as Director of Marketing and Special Events from 2001-06. Wynters was the driving force behind the creation of both the “Road to the TD Garden” and “Bertagna Trophy” Tours, as well as the Hockey East Kids Club, and “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” initiative. After 11 seasons, the Skating Strides program has raised over $300,000 for grass roots breast cancer initiatives, while at the same time has increased attendance at women’s hockey games and gave the student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. The Skating Strides program was recognized in May 2016 as a “100 Everyday Amazing” recipient. Sponsored by Mass General Hospital, this international award program honors individuals and groups — caregivers, researchers, philanthropists, advocates and volunteers from around the globe — whose commitment to the fight against cancer is inspirational. A native of Quincy, Massachusetts, the former Kathy Walsh earned a B.S. degree in marketing from Providence College in 1982. She began her career while an undergraduate, as a three-year intern with the men’s hockey team. Following graduation, she served the Friars in two capacities; first as Assistant Sports Information Director (primary men’s hockey contact) and then as Assistant Athletic Director, Athletic Marketing. While at PC, and before Hockey East had a full-time staff, Wynters worked with former PC athletic director, and then Commissioner, Lou Lamoriello on the launch of the conference in 1983, and then coordinated the first three Hockey East championship tournaments (1985-87). She also served as Tournament Director for the 1986 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four at the Providence Civic Center, co-hosted by Brown and Providence College. In 1988, Wynters left her position at PC and moved over to Hockey East on a full-time basis, where she served the conference as Assistant Commissioner during the late 80’s and early 90’s, before going on to work for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, spending three years as a Marketing Director, coordinating licensing and souvenir merchandising. Among her earlier accomplishments at Hockey East, Wynters worked with Joe Bertagna in coordinating the first and only “Hockeyfest” events, combining the ECAC and Hockey East championships into single weekend events from 1989-91. Kathy and her husband Chuck (a retired on-ice official for Hockey East), reside in Waltham, Massachusetts. They have two grown children: daughter Annie (25), is a high school special education teacher, and son Charles (24), is a certified athletic trainer (ATC).

Brian Smith - Associate Commissioner Smith enters his fourth season with the Hockey East Association and first as Associate Commissioner after spending three years as Director of Communications. In this role, he is responsible for all marketing and public and media relations efforts from the league office. In his first three years with Hockey East, Smith has revitalized the digital presence of the conference by revamping the league website, HockeyEastOnline.com, and its social media channels to develop the most heavily followed accounts in college hockey. Smith also served as the main media contact for the 2015 Frozen Four, hosted by Hockey East and the TD Garden, and assisted in the successful execution of the Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Frozen Fenway events. He has also played a key role in Hockey East’s television negotiations, while spearheading new digital ventures for the league. Smith has been involved with numerous other endeavors during his time with Hockey East, including assisting with multiple NCAA Ice Hockey Officiating Department programs, serving on the media relations team at the 2016 and 2017 Frozen Fours, directing the 2015 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, aiding with the media operations of the American Hockey Coaches Association, and serving as Assistant Venue Press Officer for Gillette Stadium during the 2016 Copa América Centenario. Prior to joining the conference in July 2014, Smith spent two years with USA Hockey as the Brian Fishman Intern, a prestigious program that develops young professionals in the athletic communications business. Dividing his time with USA Hockey between the national office in Colorado Springs, Colorado and the National Team Development Program, then located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Smith traveled extensively while assisting in numerous international tournaments as the main media contact for U.S. national teams. While with the NTDP, Smith served as the main media contact for both the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 teams. Additionally, Smith played an integral role in the execution of the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. Smith also has spent time working with the Boston Bruins and New England Revolution in various roles. With the Bruins from 2010-12, Smith worked alongside a communications staff that received the Dick Dillman Award and was charged with media relations duties during the 2011 Stanley Cup Final. With the New England Revolution, Smith oversaw donations for the New England Revolution Charitable Foundation and assisted with all match day operations, including international friendlies at Gillette Stadium. A former high school hockey player at Woburn Memorial High School, Smith is a 2012 graduate of Boston College with a degree in English and Communications and earned four varsity letters in track and field while competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

HOCKEY EAST STAFF Dan Parkhurst Web Site Coordinator Parkhurst enters his 21st year of affiliation with Hockey East as the league’s web site designer and coordinator. Dan assists in the league’s public relations efforts with multimedia solutions and day-to-day online efforts, including game-night services, video editing and statistical enhancements. In November of 1997, Parkhurst helped bring Hockey East into the digital age with the launching of HockeyEastOnline.com, the official web site of Hockey East. Since then, he has constantly sought to improve the site through innovations and multiple re-designs including the most recent overhaul in the summer of 2015. A former play-by-play voice for UNH hockey on radio and television. He has also worked behind the mic for ESPN, NBCSN and other national and regional television networks. Parkhurst is a 1993 graduate of UNH, where he served as the Wildcats’ team manager. He now resides in Conway, New Hampshire, with his wife Lynn. They have two children, Jonny (24) and Riley (18), an aspiring local musician.

Meghan Pflieger Graduate Intern

Carolyn Stacey Graduate Intern

Pflieger is a 2017 graduate from the University of New Hampshire, where she majored in sport studies and minored in business administration. She interned with various programs inside of UNH Athletics, including Athletics Development and Event Management. During her time with UNH Athletics Development, Pflieger gained experience in fundraising efforts while also enhancing donor relationships of various endowed scholarships. She also assisted with event management, including scheduling, internal and external relations meetings, and game day management for men’s and women’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball, and track and field. Pflieger was also a student-athlete on the gymnastics team. In her final season in 2017, Pflieger served as co-captain as the team qualified for NCAA Regionals for the fourth straight year. Pflieger received Senior EAGL Gymnast of the Year for her final season, based on performance amongst all seniors competing in the EAGL Conference. At the UNH Wildcats Senior Awards Banquet in the spring, Pflieger received the Community Involvement Award, which recognizes two senior student-athletes who exemplify commitment to serving the University, UNH athletic department, and the greater community. A native of Barneveld, New York, and she hopes to pursue a career in Sports Management.

Stacey is a 2017 graduate of the University of New Hampshire where she majored in Communication and minored in Psychology. While studying at UNH, Stacey interned with the Athletic Department as a member of the ‘Cat Crew. The ‘Cat Crew consists of a group of Marketing and Promotion interns whose main focus is to create marketing plans that promote UNH Athletics and enhance fan experience on game day. She started on the ‘Cat Crew in the fall of 2015 as a social media coordinator and continued in the Fall of 2016 as a marketing director for UNH Football. At the end of the 2016-17 academic year, Stacey was awarded the ‘Cat Crew Innovation Award for her exceptional efforts in digital media and contributions toward marketing initiatives. During her time at UNH, Stacey became a member of the sorority: Alpha Xi Delta. In the spring of 2016, she studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic, where she interned at the National Library of Technology while studying communication, new media, and journalism. A native of Bangor, Maine, she attended Bangor High School and participated in competitive cheerleading at Cheer Magic All-Stars. In the future, Carolyn hopes to return to school to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration while continuing a career path in sports.

Dave Lezenski Supervisor of Officials Dave Lezenski begins his 10th season as Supervisor of Officials for the Women’s Hockey East Association. Named to the position in the Fall of 2007, Lezenski had previously served for four years as assistant supervisor of officials. Since his hiring, Women’s Hockey East has become one of the top league’s for officiating in the NCAA. Lezenski’s staff of officials has worked the Women’s Frozen Four semifinals nine times and the championship game five times since he has been with the league. Lezenski has also hired 15 female officials to work within the league, one of the highest totals in collegiate sports. In addition to his role with the WHEA, Lezenski also maintains a large body of work for the NCAA during the men’s and women’s national tournaments, working as a video replay official and assisting with the evaluation of officials for the previous nine seasons. In his full-time profession as Director of Athletics for Lowell (Mass.) Public Schools, Lezenski is in charge of overseeing the athletic department of the fourth largest public school system in the state of Massachusetts and the second largest public high school east of the Mississippi River. He formerly served as Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health in Billerica Public Schools for nine years. Lezenski is also actively involved with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. Lezenski has been involved with hockey at all levels, playing high school hockey at St. John’s Prep and attending Boston College before moving into the officiating ranks. The former NIHOA and ECAC veteran official has also coached a number of hockey teams throughout his career. A native of Lynn, Massachusetts, Lezenski currently resides in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The regular season standings will determine the seedings for the 2018 Women’s Hockey East Championship Tournament. The four high seeds will host a quarterfinal round game on the weekend of February 23. The top eight teams will advance to the postseason, while the team that finishes in ninth place will not move on to the playoffs. The four quarterfinal winners will then be reseeded for the semifinal round on Saturday, March 3. The semifinal winners advance to the 16th annual Women’s Hockey East Championship Game on Sunday, March 4. The 2018 Women’s Hockey East Championship Tournament semifinals and title game will be hosted by Northeastern University at historic Matthews Arena.

Matthews Arena will play host to the 16th annual WHEA Championship on March 3-4.

THE JOE CONCANNON HOCKEY EAST MEDIA AWARD ABOUT THE JOE CONCANNON HOCKEY EAST MEDIA AWARD: The prestigious honor, named in 2001 in memory of long-time Boston Globe sportswriter Joe Concannon, is bestowed annually to an individual who has demonstrated a superior body of work in covering and promoting the Hockey East Association over an extended period of time. Pete Souris has spent nearly two decades promoting and assisting in the media coverage of Hockey East, including the last two years as Associate Athletic Director for Communications at UMass Lowell. He was hired in January of 2014 as Assistant Athletic Director for Communications. Previously, Souris spent over six years at Hockey East as Assistant Commissioner for Public Relations where he supported 11-member institutions in a media relations capacity, served as the media coordinator for six Hockey East Championships at the TD Garden and was the media coordinator for two sold out Frozen Fenway events at Fenway Park in 2010 and 2012. In addition, he was charged with creating a digital media plan for the conference’s website and social media channels, as well as serving as the liaison for the league’s three national and regional television partners. Souris previously spent six years from 2001-2007 working in the athletics media relations department at the University of New Hampshire, serving as the primary contact for men’s ice hockey. Also, he served as the media coordinator for the 2004 and 2007 NCAA hockey regionals in Manchester, New Hampshire. Souris has worked the last 18 Frozen Fours in a media relations capacity, dating back to 2000 in Providence, R.I., which included two appearances with the Wildcats in 2002 and 2003, and in a consulting role with the River Hawks in 2013.

SKATING STRIDES

2017-18 Skating Strides Program Founded in 2006, Skating Strides serves as Hockey East’s fundraising vehicle to bring awareness to breast cancer. Entering its 11th season of existence, Skating Strides has contributed nearly $400,000 to breast cancer organizations throughout New England through the Friends of Mel Foundation, including the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Maine, the Gloria Gemma Foundation in Rhode Island, the Vermont Cancer Center, Necessities Bag and the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center in Connecticut, the Program for Young Women with Breast Cancer, the Ellie Fund and the Art of Living Life Beyond Cancer Conference in Massachusetts. Hockey East’s Skating Strides program was honored in May 2016 by Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center at the one hundred, a fundraising and awareness initiative that honors those that have displayed a commitment to fighting cancer. Skating Strides has also given the student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. INDIVIDUAL HOCKEY EAST AWARDS CAMMI GRANATO PLAYER OF THE YEAR The Warrior Cammi Granato Player of the Year Award, renamed in 2008 to honor former Providence College superstar Cammi Granato, is awarded annually by the head coaches to a player who has demonstrated the most superior play and leadership for her team. Granato had a legendary career, establishing many scoring records for the Friars (139 goals in 99 games). She captured ECAC Player of the Year honors from 1991-93, while leading the team to back-to-back conference titles in 1992 and 1993. A 15-year member of the U.S. Women’s National Tea,, Granato is the program’s all-time scoring leader. She achieved international fame by captaining Team USA to the gold medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. Keller skated in 20 of 24 Women’s Hockey East games for the Eagles this season, helping Boston College to the number one seed in the for the fourth straight season. Keller backboned the Eagles’ defensive corps to a record of 17-4-3, amassing six goals and a league-leading 21 assists, including six game-winning helpers, in the process. Keller was the only Hockey East skater to average more than 1.00 assists per game, finishing with an average of 1.05. The junior blueliner and Top-10 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award finalist also led the league in power-play assists (10), plus-minus (+25). As a defenseman, Keller averaged 1.45 blocked shots per game with a total of 29 blocks on the season. She was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on February 13 and the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on January 13. Against the rest of the NCAA, Keller ranked in the top-25 players nationwide in scoring (9g, 26a) and top-15 in assists (26). In just her junior season, Keller became the all-time leading scorer among Women’s Hockey East defenseman, improving her career stat line to 15-59—74.

PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Dove appeared in 23 Hockey East games for the Friars across her rookie campaign, racking up four goals and 12 assists, leading all PC freshmen and all WHEA rookie defensemen and ranking fifth among all WHEA first-year skaters. Among first-year defensemen, she ranked tops in goals (4), assists (12), points (16), power-play goals (2), power-play points (6), and was second in power-play assists(4). Dove’s 0.52 assists per game also ranked third among all WHEA rookies and tops among first-year defensemen. She also sat fifth in points per game with 0.70, and second among all rookies in power-play points with six on the season. In Hockey East contests, Dove netted two game-winning goals and dished out the game-winning assist once. On January 23, Dove was honored for her performance after a five-assist weekend against as the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week. Vanisova appeared in 20 games during her rookie season, netting an even 10 goals and 10 assists to rank third in scoring among all league freshmen and good for second on her team. Vanisova led all league rookies with 0.50 goals per game and ranked fourth in assists per game with 0.50. Her points per game average of 1.00 was good for second among all WHEA first-year players. The Czech Republic native also finished as a top-five freshmen in shots on goals per game (2.80) and goals per shots on goal (.179). Vanisova was named Pro Ambitions Rookie on September 26 after the first week of the season and was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on November 14, one of just two firstyear skaters to earn the player of the week award this season. She is the first skater from Maine to win an individual award.

COACH OF THE YEAR

This award is bestowed annually to a head coach who is considered to have demonstrated the highest number of significant accomplishments over the course of the season as voted by the conference’s head coaches. Providence College’s Deraney wins the award for the third time. Coach Deraney led the Providence College Friars to an 11-10-3 Hockey East record, the team’s first winning season in league play since 2011-12, and the fourth seed in the WHEA Tournament. Deraney guided his team to the third-most potent offense on Women’s Hockey East, averaging 3.17 goals per game. The veteran coach was at the helm of a Friars squad that scored the second-most third-period goals in league play in 2016-17, potting 34 goals in the final frame of contests. His team also limited opponents to the second-fewest third-period goals on the year, allowing just 19 shots to find the back of the net in the final 20 minutes of play.

Team USA won the first-ever Olympic gold medal presented for women’s ice hockey, defeating long-time nemesis Team Canada in the 1998 games. The squad included 12 former Huskies, Wildcats and Friars, and was captained by Providence legend Cammi Granato. Granato and seven others returned to claim silver in 2002. Hockey East placed four student-athletes on the silver-medal winning team at the 2010 Winter Olympics and five more on the Team USA roster for the 2014 games.
