AROUND HOCKEY EAST: - The semifinal pairs for the 14th annual Women’s Hockey East Championship at Merrimack College are set for March 5 at Merrimack College. No. 4 seed UConn and No. 1 seed Boston College will compete in the 1:30pm game. The 4:30pm game between No. 3 seed Boston University and No. 2 seed Northeastern will determine the second team in the title game at 1:30pm on March 6 ... Four players on two of the final four teams have been nominated as top-10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier award. They include Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) (BC), Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) (NU), Megan Keller (Farmington Hills, Mich.) (BC), and Haley Skarupa (Rockville, Md.) (BC) ... No. 1 Boston College upended Maine by scores of 5-2 and 6-1 in the quarterfinal round. Rookie Makenna Newkirk (Scottsdale, Ariz.) blazed the scoring trail for BC with five points in two games (3g, 2a). Newkirk recorded her 10th and 11th multi-point games of the season. She notched a game-winning goal on Friday and added a game-tying assist on Saturday, helping the Eagles to a 36-0-0 record entering the semifinals. Skarupa extended her point streak to 12 games and Dana Trivigno (Seatuket, N.Y) racked up four points (2g, 2a) including a 1-2--3 performance in Friday’s 5-2 victory and two game-winning contributions (1g, 1a) ... Boston University advances to the semifinals for the ninth consecutive season. Rebecca Leslie (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Terriers as she picked up five points in three tilts against Vermont. Two of the games were multi-point performances, her 13th and 14th of the season. Senior Sarah Lefort (Ormstown, Qué.) picked up a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 6-1 victory putting her first in career points at Boston University (183 points). The previous record (181 points) was held by two-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin ... UConn swept New Hampshire in both quarterfinal games. The second game took three overtime periods to determine a winner, but ultimately came to an end at the hand of UConn senior Leah Buress (Windsor, Ont.). Buress netted both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the second-longest game in WHEA history, and added three points the previous evening for a five point weekend (3g, 2a). Defenseman Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.) notched four points on the weekend including a 1-2--3 performance on Saturday. Netminder Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) picked up back-to-back 40-plus save performances in a 2-0-0 weekend. Chuli denied 113 shots in two games and picked up a .956 save percentage ... Despite two losses to Boston College, the best offensive team in the country, Maine netminder Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) posted 108 saves over the weekend. Treacy finished her career with 1,969 conference saves, fifth all-time in Hockey East ... New Hampshire suffered setbacks to UConn that were both one goal differentials, 3-2 and 4-3 respectively. Freshman Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) notched three points (2g, 1a) on the weekend including two marks in the 4-3 triple-overtime deficit...Northeastern swept Providence by scores of 5-2 and 6-2 respectively. With 28 wins this season, the Northeastern squad set a new single-season program record. Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) racked up seven points in two games, including her 12th career hat trick and 13th career fourpoint game on Saturday. Coyne notched the trifecta on Saturday: a short-handed goal, a power-play goal, and an even-strength goal. Defenseman Heather Mottau (Milton, Mass.) matched her career high of three assists on Saturday and added an assist the previous evening for a four-point weekend ... Providence fell to Northeastern but saw multi-point weekends from Kate Friesen (Altona, Man.) (2g), Cassidy MacPherson (Oakville, Ont.) (2a), and Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) (1g, 1a) ... Vermont forced BU to a third quarterfinal game. Freshman Saana Valkama (Pirkkala, Fin.) netted two goals in Saturday’s 4-2 victory, forcing a Game 3. Victoria Andreakos (Aurora, Ont.) and Alyssa Gorecki (Monee, Ill.) contributed two assists apiece in the series. #

WARRIOR PLAYER OF THE WEEK LEAH BURESS UCONN Leah Buress (Sr., F; Windsor, Ont.) netted the game-tying and game-winning goals in Saturday’s 4-3 triple overtime victory over New Hampshire. Boasted a 1-2--3 performance the previous evening, including a game-winning helper. KENDALL COYNE NORTHEASTERN Kendall Coyne (Sr., F; Palos Heights, Ill.) notched her 12th career hat trick and 13th career four-point game in Saturday’s 6-2 win. HOCKEY EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK ELAINE CHULI UCONN

Elaine Chuli (Sr., G; Waterford, Ont.) shattered the previous Hockey East season-high of 59 saves with a 69-save performance in a triple overtime win in Game 2 of UConn’s quarterfinal series against New Hampshire. The senior netminder picked up a .956 save percentage after denying 113 shots in two games to backbone the Huskies into the WHEA semifinals.
