Museum of Aviation Restoring One of its Largest Aircraft

One of the largest aircraft in the Museum of Aviation collection is getting some love and tender care. She’s been washed and will soon receive a new paint job. “Old Shakey,” as her 7th Logistics Support Squadron crew members affectionately called her, is a C-124C which once flew missions out of Robins Air Force in the 1960s. She’s also getting her “Pack Rats” patch repainted which the squadron proudly displayed on the side of the aircraft. That part of the restoration is being done by volunteer Rhonda Faircloth, the wife of Anthony Faircloth, one of the

Museum aircraft maintenance specialists. Not a professional painter or artist, Rhonda said “I’m doing it just to keep busy.” Her husband probably had something to do with it. The squadron “pack rat” was a drawing of Mighty Mouse carrying a log forming the shape of a “7” symbolizing the 7th Log which flew domestic and foreign humanitarian flights all over the world. Mighty Mouse was an animated short film character created in 1942 that had super powers including flight, super strength and invulnerability. Back in the 60s thousands of Pack Rat symbols blanketed Robins and any other base that the 7th Loggers landed at. It was their answer to the “Kilroy was Here” phrase of World War II. The restoration of the aircraft will take several months due to the size of the aircraft, the heat of the summer days and the limited number of Museum staff members and volunteers working on it. The plane first flew in 1952 and was the largest transport of its kind until the C-5 Galaxy came along. It could carry large combat vehicles, bulky pieces of construction equipment and even nuclear weapons. Large clamshell doors in the front nose of the aircraft opened up the entire bottom front quarter of the fuselage while personnel occupied the upper deck. The fourengine plane is huge, measuring almost 50 feet tall and 130 feet in length. The last time the aircraft was restored was in the year 2000, when a group of former 7th Loggers headed up by Museum volunteer Lovell Spackman raised $10,000 to have her painted.

8.24 PACKWAY HANDLE BAND AT COX CAPITOL THEATRE Doors at 8 p.m. / Show at 9 p.m. $10 General Admission. The famous Athens, which had once spawned the B-52s, REM, Widespread Panic, and countless other indie, pop and punk acts, was now the home to a competing minority of bluegrass players. The Packway Handle Band emerged from this small scene, finding national acclaim first as finalists at the Telluride bluegrass competition in 2002 and 2003, then taking 2nd place in 2004. Packway Handle Band has emerged at the national forefront of bands that use a gatheraround-the-mic style. Theirs is not a mission to preserve historical styles– it’s just how they do what they do the best. And what they do best is rooted in thought provoking songwriting, clever choice and arrangement of bluegrass traditionals, and totally unexpected (even totally inappropriate) covers, all delivered with a crackling energy.

COMMUNITY STAND-OUTS

what inspired him to follow his passions and how his business has changed over the last decade. What would you say fueled your desire to go into the comic book business? Oh, man. When I was a kid...around 8 years old I guess, I had this comic, the XMen. Issue 136. Well, Issue 137 just wasn’t available to me at that time or in my area and in that issue, Jean Grey, one of the primary characters, dies. Well, I didn’t know that! I had to wait another week until issue 138! I go to open it and the first thing I see on the splash page is Cyclops looking down into her grave. It was so frustrating! I never forgot that experience and I think it was, in large part, the inspiration behind me getting into the business. I didn’t want to miss anything!

MEET THE BOSS Mike McDaniel of Heroes & Villians Comic Shop Mike McDaniel is a Georgia boy, born and bred. In fact his alma mater is UGA and in his words “you cut me I bleed red and black”. His father owned a cabinet shop in Macon that was open from 1975 until recently but Mike always had different ideas about his future that diverged from pursuing the family business. While on outings or running errands with his family as a child, he had preoccupations and they largely centered around when and where he was going to get his next fix. Week by week he would wait for those slim, color-splashed pages to land on the spinner racks and, like so many of us, he would forever become a member of comic fandom. Now he runs a successful gaming and comic book shop at his new Southland Station location off of Russell Parkway in Warner Robins. I chatted with Mike about

8 AUGUST 2012

After 8 years at your old location down the road you finally decided to take the leap and expand to a new store. What prompted you to make the move? Well, I had been watching the location at Southland Station over the last five years but at the time the rents were just too high and I wasn’t sure I was ready to take that step. I really should have moved about three years ago but I just didn’t. I looked around and everything was just piling higher and higher...I asked myself, “Where did all of this stuff come from?!” Well, I lost my brother, who took over the cabinet shop after my dad retired, in a tragic motorcycle accident a little over a year ago and the family business was consolidated. I was grieving but I received an inheritance...and I started thinking, it’s now or never. There isn’t enough time and no one really knows what’s going to happen tomorrow. So I went for it. What are some of the events that Heroes and Villains hosts? We just had a free RPG day that was an all day thing. We do that one day a year. Pathfinder which is kind of an offshoot of Dungeons and Dragons is the third

Saturday of every month, we get some cosplay action sometimes. We have WarHammer tournaments now, which we could have never done at the old shop. Last week at our Magic tournament, which is held every Friday, we had 51 people show up to play! All of this is possible because we use the space we have more efficiently. Half of the shop is dedicated to gaming, the other half to comics. Customers can be comfortable browsing the comics while we host our tournaments and games and that makes for better business. Do you see a resurgence in the overall interest and consumption of comics now that it’s more on the pop culture radar? Kind of. See, I think it’s that nerd culture now is way more acceptable than when you and I were growing up and that’s probably because information spreads so much quicker and people are able to have access to comics in a broader way. Shows like Big Bang Theory and a few others give the culture more visibility and an element of humor that isn’t ya know, pointing and laughing. They may not read the comics or play the games but now their laughing with us, not at us. How would you ultimately like to see your business evolve? It’s growing so quickly already! I guess I just have to factor in expansion. Maybe someday down the road I can branch out to a second location or something. But right now I’m just enjoying the success of the last year! So I hear you have a WWII bunker for an office. Is that just a rumor or something I can visit? I sure do! I’m kind of a WWII buff. I’m just really interested in that period in history and find it fascinating. I even have an antique 1940’s model Underwood typewriter you are more than welcome to look at.

Cozy Comfort in The British Pantry Eton Mess. Just saying it makes my mouth water. It is a layered confection of fluffy Devonshire cream, crumbled meringue cookies, and strawberries sweetened in sugar and their own perfect juices, and it is to die for!

G

oing to the British Pantry is like going home for some folks. British expats go for the taste of the familar and for me personally, the environment harkens back to a time when things were both simpler and more gentile. Lacey Evans, nightlife writer for 11th Hour and formerly of Coventry, England says, “it’s exactly the way I remembered eating sausage rolls in my grandmother’s kitchen as a kid.” The experience is one of when parlors were used for chats and maybe a polite game of cards, ladies wore hats and gloves and men were gentlemen. Something about the Pantry feels like stepping a bit backwards in time and perhaps the answer to this lies in the delicate care taken in the preparation and presentation of the unique menu or perhaps it is the fine attention to detail. When one orders tea, it isn’t just a cuppa. It’s a service complete with elegant little pot and matching cup and saucer, a dish of sugar cubes and a pitcher of cream. Dainty tea sandwiches can be ordered to complete an afternoon tea service. What I like most about the Pantry is that it caters to the feeling of home. It isn’t stuffy; it’s comfortable, inviting. The conversation of owner Jan Francis, clipped with the accent of the British Isles, and her regular patrons and employees lends the environment a pleasant connection to the world of women and mothers. It reminds me of when the ladies in my family came together on Sundays and holidays to create feasts of magnificent proportions. Jan does the same thing daily and with aplomb. The Coronation Chicken is a curry dish and curry is the most popular dish in England. Shredded chicken spiced perfectly and topped with slivered almonds can be served alongside a salad or on a bun as a sandwich. The flavors compliment eachother beautifully. Kids enjoy the currant “squash” drink, which is a sparkling combination of fruit syrup, sugar and water, similar to sodas but with an entirely different pop of flavor. I always get the spicy ginger beers, such as Old Jamaica or Idris Fiery. In addition to some wonderful dishes served in abundant proportions, The British Pantry is stocked to the gills with British ephemera. One can find all things of the Isles here, from tea cozies to kettles, London Underground notepads and keychains (I want) and an

huge selection of stock goods for cooking, not to mention teas. Bombshells Over the

Bible Belt Tinker Nantucket has been dreaming of this for years. The truth of the matter is that the spirit of vaudeville lives in her blood. She is a born performer descended of born performers. Her grandfather, Samuel Harry Brooks, sang and dance in vaudeville and burlesque halls as a side performer in the 1930’s and if Tinker is any indicator of inherited talent, it must come on with a vengeance! Tinker is also known as Trichelle Hutton, a mild mannered alter ego who runs the Perry Belly Dance studio. She has been a dancer for over thirty years with an emphasis on the belly dancing discipline, which has taken her all over the world in an endeavor to perfect the form and gain a more thorough understanding of her craft. But Trich got bit by the burlesque bug and that took her on a whole new adventure as Tinker Nantucket. In the last two or three years, TInker has spent time getting to know burlesque intimately, which is after all the ideal way. In St. Louis she received private instruction from famous master instructor Lola Van Ella. What she learned is that burlesque embraces a fantastic array of body types and skill levels, and a range of acts equally vast. Taking this understanding home to Perry, Tinker had an epiphany. Using the skills she had learned over the years, she too could create a burlesque variety show! She decided to make it her personal mission to bring the wit, sexiness and hilarious satire of the burlesque tradition to the midstate and the midstate has responded by giving burlesque a warm welcome! “Early on I thought, okay, we’ll do 5 or 6 acts and that

will be that. No biggie and it’ll be fun! But now, it’s just turned into this gorgeous monster of a show!” After losing their first venue, Tinker was offered a new venue that was, in her words, practically handed to her. The Bible Belt Burlesque logo was done gratis. The support of local businesses and enthusiasts has been a little overwhelming to Tinker and if that wasn’t what was going to do the trick, the talent who has come on board would have. Trish Guinn, a comedian and MC from Ontario Improv in California but born out of Georgia immediately expressed interest in coming on board. She has performed her show, “The Trish Guinn Because I Said So Show” and has toured and performed all over the U.S., on the Tonight Show, Comedy Central, and the list goes on. Filling out the billing in the best possible way is the magnificent Talloolah Love, who is also teaching a burlesque workshop through the Perry Belly Dance studio called “The Textbook Tease” in which she will instruct beginners or the simply curious on burlesque basics, costuming, and then finish off with a catered lunch with “the sweetest T in the South”. Tinker says that she is fortunate that she doesn’t have to draw the stark distinctions between her life on the stage as Tinker Nantucket, and her life as a loving wife, mother, and business owner Trichelle Hutton. Some of the girls have to sign morality clauses in their jobs and so it is important that they keep their stage presence and their private lives very separate. However, the experience of burlesque is a reward in itself. The taboo surrounding the female form is slowly sloughing off and what you are finding is that each lady, in every shape, is her own diamond and diamonds are born to sparkle and shine. Blatant objectivism is not what drives burlesque, as it has driven other forms of erotic performance. The theatrical roots of burlesque can actually be found in Shakespeare and Chaucer, all the way back to the Greek classics. It implies parody in the theatrical sense and the comic silliness of its subject. In later traditions it was incorporated into the variety show format and cabarets. The point was to include bawdy humor with the female striptease and the most successful burlesque performers intertwine these elements with grace and an acceptance of the absurd. But burlesque has been known to be misunderstood. Tinker explained her anxieties about pitching her idea to HAA and introducing the midstate to Bible Belt Burlesque. I was so nervous! I didn’t know what to expect

because, you know, it is a bit racy and it does push the envelope a little bit. But burlesque is also about fun and humor. It’s an old-fashioned tease and it’s so different than anything else. It incorporates elements of theater and in that way it defies age and what beauty is. During their acts, our ladies get to own that stage, own their audience, and be empowered by the joy of their body. We have performers that range in age from 27 to mid forties and as your body changes after children and with time, sometimes you feel like a stranger in it. It’s hard to feel beautiful all the time without an exhausting effort. Burlesque, in my own experience has encouraged the acceptance of my body. The ladies who perform; they are doing this for themselves. They are daring themselves to be bold. To be funny. Burlesque itself incorporates a lot of satire. It’s tongue in cheek, and it’s our job to wink!” The performers, Lily Prawn, Lola (de)Luscious, Stony Blue, Reese, and Candy Cane Cleaver find support from what at first glance would seem the unlikeliest of places. “My husband is responsible for my stage name!” Tinker giggles. “He’s a Yankee and when he was on a hockey team they were picking out new names for themselves as sort of a lark. It was the name of the street they grew up on and the name of their first dog. So his dog was Tinker, and he grew up on a road called Nantucket. And what with all of the little jokes about the man from Nantucket, the name was perfect for me! He is so supportive and I am really lucky to have him encouraging me every step of the way and I know it!” The ladies of Bible Belt Burlesque have been practicing for this tightrope act tirelessly in the last several weeks and though largely accepted, there have been raised eyebrows here and there. It comes with the territory, in most cases, and being in the Bible Belt itself was a particular challenge. It’s a challenge that the performers, their families, and their community has chosen to accept and gladly! The variety show featuring Talloolah Love and the Ladies of Bible Belt Burlesque will be held on August 10, 733 Carroll Street in downtown Perry. doors open at 8:30, showtime at 9:00. Show is 18 and over only, ID check at the door. Tickets start at $5. To register for The Textbook Tease go online at www.biblebeltburlesque.com Local sponsors include Medittarranean Grill and The Costume Shop. RACHEL HELIE 11thHourOnline.com 13

Friends Of Perry Animal Shelter have a plea on their website. It helped to pass the SPLOST (penny tax) in March of this year, with monies earmarked to upgrade the Perry Animal Shelter facilities.

“They of the Year”, Davis Cosey

D

avis Cosey shows up. It’s just what he does. When the people in Perry want to get something done, he is ready to commit time and elbow grease to the things they need. This and his enthusiasm and kindness are more than likely the reasons he was recipient of the Sherrill Stafford Award for his contributions to the arts and community of Perry. The Sherrill Stafford award was created to honor the contribution of one of Perry’s great organizers and to recognize those in the Houston County community who continue to tirelessly volunteer their time and influence to help promote the arts and events in the city of Perry and surrounding towns. When Cosey was notified that he would be this year’s recipient he says that his first reaction was astonished surprise. “I didn’t really think I deserved an award for what I do. Not to say it isn’t a real honor to be recognized but it’s really easy to pitch in with a group that works as hard as the Houston Arts Alliance.” But Cosey makes himself available and that

makes all the difference. When HAA needed him, he was there. He helped with projects when the office moved. He participated in the conversion of the Armory Ballroom to a community arts center. “A core of volunteers in the community are the action people and out of the 100%, about 20% of those people show up every time. The thing about HAA that I’ve noticed over the years and me and my wife Diane have worked with them is that a much higher percentage of people are willing to show up and do the work and that makes a huge difference in what we accomplish. It’s why we have been such a success,” says Cosey. He jokes about how he and some of the other volunteers on the HAA thought of printing tee shirts up that stated simply “THEY”. “They” are always the ones who need to do something about the problems in the community or in the world. It’s never “I” or “we”...so we h year the numad this idea that we would go ahead and be “They”. Maybe sell ‘em at fundraisers and have a slogan or something...’be a they for a day’”, Cosey chuckles over this. “You have to admit it would make a good tee shirt!” The project that Cosey has undertaken that is closest to his heart is the Friends of Perry Animal Shelter, which he was instrumental in starting eight years ago. Last year, the shelter processed and adopted out over 413 animals and thisbers through June are looking great. Part of his emphasis in organizing the shelter and accommodating a budget that is always stretched by the seemingly insurmountable numbers of abandoned and neglected animals, he says, is the ability to compromise. “Compromise and common sense are an act of will. Sometimes we get caught up in labeling everything and we forget the importance of getting the work done. I’m responsible for these animals. They don’t get to say their piece and it’s my job to speak for them. I can’t

From FOPAS.org; Citizens of Perry and Houston County: Please support a new animal shelter to serve Perry and South Houston County. This upcoming SPLOST is our last chance for 6 more years to improve the conditions for homeless and lost animals. The existing shelter is antiquated and the infrastructure is much worse and more prone to the spread of disease than in Macon’s existing shelter. In the Perry building, open drains running though kennels are conduits of disease, the porous aged materials are not adequate for proper cleaning, and the kennel sizes are far too small for humane housing. Rodent and pest problems are unmanageable, there are gaping holes in the rotted ceiling and roof. All the humane care by Animal Control and volunteers cannot overcome the severe handicap of a worn out facility. This will be the third time citizens have made the request, spanning 2 SPLOSTs and 10 years. It may be our last chance for the needed improvement. Please call the Houston County Commission, They need to know you care: 478-542-211.

get caught up too much in the differences that people have because I need to be there for these animals.” It is apparent in the affection in his voice as he discusses particular hard luck cases that his heart is in this work. “The challenge I find in being a support to a municipal shelter is that we are trying to give all of these animals a shot, not just the cute ones. One day I took this ugly little dog out for a walk at the park. He was the funniest thing but so homely. I threw a stick for him to chase and he went off and fetched it. Brought it right back! Had a great time. He was having so much fun I thought it would be neat to get a video of this little guy and I put it up on YouTube. We do a Saturday adoption drive at PetSmart and because of that video this little dog had four people show up interested in adopting him!” Cosey would love to be able to eventually get a state level grant for the shelter that he hopes he could apply locally to fund a no cost/low cost spade and neuter program in the area to slow down the rate of intake at the shelter. “I want to show people a pathway to responsible pet ownership and give them the tools to work with. To educate and incorporate these animals into their lives in the healthiest, safest, and most loving way they can. But without slowing down this intake issue we can’t fix the problems.” Cosey has been working with the city on a design for a new shelter and perhaps those things that he wishes to see are not that far off in the future. When talking about the shelter, and his love for animals it is easy to see why HAA chose Mr. Cosey to receive the Sherrill Stafford Award. He is a generous person. By investing his time, work, and genuine interest and love for his community he earned it. For more information on the work that Friends of Perry Animal Shelter (FOPAS) does in the community visit them on Facebook. Metropolis

Middle Georgia is lives! July 20th came to prove once again, our small town packs excitement and plenty of opportunites for fun. The Cavern, located off Hwy 96 and Moody Road, hosted an event call “Glow Fest.” The room was packed with fluorescent smeared bodies. wonder why anyone has to doubt this place. Residents of Warner Robins can do it just as good, if not better then anyone else. Kippers, located off Watson Boulevard, have stolen the number one place in my heart! Walking through the door, the hostess offered a deal of $10 admission as well as $20 wristband special for unlimited drinks. When you work out the costs of an average drink, you have to realize this is a steal. No single word can describe the atmosphere of Friday nights in Kippers. Although the bartenders were a blur, they were incredibly gracious and accommodating with every drink order I had. I’m convinced every dance floor in this wonderful area is filled every weekend. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: REYES, KENNETH ANDERSON, DERRICK “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I Carrying concealed Speeding, poss. of will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cormarijuana, driving with weapon, poss.of nered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” firearm by convicted suspended license felon, poss. of marijuaFor the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
