As part of our Choose Civility initiative, we seek to understand the tangled roots of segregation and discrimination with Undesign the Redline, an interactive exhibit about how housing policies from the 1930s still negatively influence communities today. This in-depth visual display explores the history of structural racism and classism in America that became entrenched in the 1930s, when color-coded "residential security maps" were created to show risky areas for federal backing of newly invented home ownership programs. Tour the exhibit on your own or with a guide, and participate in related book discussion groups and reflection sessions. (p. 6) Elections are just around the corner, and we’re celebrating National Voter Registration Day with Vote Smart!, a voter education event on Tuesday, September 25. Meet the Board of Education candidates, register to vote, and more (p. 6). Key decisions that affect our community, our schools, and our children are determined in large part by the Board of Education, so we invite you to engage our candidates at this countyfocused event. In October, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Jason Reynolds (p. 3). Inspired by his experiences growing up in Oxon Hill, his works feature minority characters and appeal to young adult and middlegrade students. “The voices [in his books] are those Reynolds heard around him in the 1980s and 90s, in a neighborhood where drugs and violence were on his doorstep, but inside was a loving family.” The Washington Post In November, we again partner with the Maryland STEM Festival to bring you an impressive lineup of innovative classes — from Fall into Science for toddlers and Stomp Rockets for teens to Family STEM Challenge: Physics of Flight for families and Women in Cryptology for adults. We look forward to seeing you at these and many other classes and events.

Registration required.

From colonial town to modern manufacturing center, we survey Baltimore’s roots as a center for commerce, business, and industry. As the 19th century began, immigrants flowed into local villages, which merged to become the city of Baltimore with the Port of Baltimore as the focal point for this immense growth. Raw materials arrived, finished goods were created, and an increasing population contributed the labor that made Baltimore an industrial landmark. Discuss the changes, watch as the landscape becomes urban, and touch on the thoughts and events shaping the citizens’ lives.

BALTIMORE ENTERS THE INDUSTRIAL AGE

Few cities in the 1920s changed more than Baltimore when it transformed from a mercantile, trading based community to an industrial powerhouse. While the population enjoyed the amenities of a post-world war modern life, businesses were finding a nearly perfect climate — social, political, labor force, geographic — to locate operations in Baltimore, a dynamic, growing city in a time when throwing off convention was part of the new social fabric.

UNDESIGN THE REDLINE

i n ou r commu n ity

Undesign the Redline reminds us, going forward, we must live up to the Fair Housing Act’s central purpose—not just to root out discrimination, but, as the Act’s co-sponsor Senator Walter Mondale said, to promote, "truly integrated and balanced living patterns." — U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Beginning in 1934 with the National Housing Act [which established the Federal Housing Administration (FHA)], the now-defunct Home Owners’ Loan Corporation created "residential security maps" to indicate the level of security for real-estate investments in 239 cities. The newest areas — typically affluent suburbs considered desirable for lending purposes — were outlined in green and labeled as Type A. Type B neighborhoods, outlined in blue, were considered "Still Desirable", whereas older Type C were labeled "Declining" and outlined in yellow. Type D neighborhoods, populated largely by African Americans and immigrants, were outlined in red and considered the most risky for mortgage support. This racial discrimination in mortgage lending shaped the demographic and wealth patterns of American communities for generations. Undesign the Redline explores the history of structural racism and classism, how these designs compounded each other from redlining maps until today, and how we can come together to undesign these systems intentionally.

big thanks

Our sincere thanks to the following individuals, organizations, and businesses for their generous financial and in-kind donations to Howard County Library System between March 1 and May 31. Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of this list. Please call 410.313.7799 to report any errors or omissions.

"As a recruiter for Harkins Builders, I believe in the benefits of corporate charitable giving. I know employees want to feel like the company they work for shares their values and pride in community assets like our award-winning library. Our support for HCLS not only improves employee engagement, but also boosts our efforts to attract and keep talented people. Building a company’s reputation by connecting it to positive community experiences such as The Longest Table just makes good business sense. Through sponsorships of initiatives like this we demonstrate that we care about the people and the community we serve. That’s why I joined Friends & Foundation of Howard County Library System. My yearly donation is an investment in my community, its people, and our future. It helps HCLS present opportunities that lead to better understanding, stronger common values, and perhaps most importantly--it says I care. And that’s what it means to be a Friend!!" - Ana Liesch, Recruiter, Harkins Builders, and member of Friends & Foundation of HCLS Board
