The score continues all summer with engaging classes like Magic Tree House: Mozart and the Magic Flute, Homemade Musical Instruments, Stop Motion Rocks, and Musical Magnets. Earn prizes for reading, attending free concerts or outdoor movies, learning to play an instrument (perhaps a ukulele from our collection!), or other activities. On Saturday, June 16, share a meal and engage in heartfelt conversations aimed at breaking divides and building relationships at The Longest Table 2018 (p. 5). We provide the dinner; you provide the conversation. Young, scrappy, and hungry fans will be thrilled to meet bestselling author Stephanie Dray on Thursday, July 26 at Miller Branch (p. 5) as she discusses her newest book, My Dear Hamilton, the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Haunting, moving, and beautifully written, Dray and her coauthor Laura Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza’s story as it’s never been told before. As summer winds down and we prepare for the start of a new school year, incoming kindergarteners won’t want to miss Kindergarten, Here We Come! Part of A+ Partners in Education, this popular class teaches children (and their anxious parents) what to expect in their first year of school, building excitement and soothing nerves (students even practice boarding a real school bus!). Similarly, Movin’ Up to Middle School offers rising sixth graders handy tips, locker combination time trials, and the opportunity to meet new friends. (p. 6) Whatever you do and wherever you go this summer, take us with you when you download eBooks or stream music and movies. Check out our extensive HCLS Now! collection before heading out. And don’t forget to log your books and activities at hclibrary.beanstack.org as part of our #100K Books Challenge. Help us rock and roll to reach our goal of reading 100,000 books this year!

As the new HCLS President and CEO, Tonya sat down with the hosts of our HiJinx podcast to talk about making the transition to HCLS and her vision for the Library. Here are some excerpts: WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO HOWARD COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM?
Howard County Library System is among the top library systems in the nation so it is very attractive...and worth crossing the country. The vision…is just phenomenal. Libraries do equal education! Everything that is going on here is really preparing the community and customers for 21st century education where people will be creating their own jobs. It is working with people who really embrace the heart of libraries. It is also the Howard County community. WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN PURSUING A CAREER IN LIBRARY SERVICES AND IS THERE A FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY YOU HAVE OF YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY?
Yes and Yes. I was brought into the library very early. My mother was a pre-school educator and my siblings and I went to the library all the time. My first after school job in high school was as a library page in my local library. I discovered during that time the power of libraries to transform people's lives. HCLS IS KNOWN FOR COMMUNITY-BASED SPECIAL EVENTS. IS THERE ONE YOU ARE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING?
I have a twin sister. FAVORITE COLOR?

"As the director of the Library and Learning Commons at Howard Community College, I fully understand the importance of reading. I know first-hand that access to books, positive reading practices, and a connection with educational institutions supportive of selfdiscovery make a difference in the lives of students.

big thanks
Our sincere thanks to the following individuals, organizations, and businesses for their generous financial and in-kind donations to Howard County Library System between December 1 and February 28. Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of this list. Please call 410.313.7799 to report any errors or omissions.
Thanks to Howard County Library System, engaging reading experiences are always available and this is particularly important during students' summer breaks. Studies show that without classroom access and support students, especially those from lower income families, lose a portion of the academic gains they make during the school year. HCLS' Summer Reading Clubs help offset this "summer slide" and play a vital role in both maintaining and advancing children's reading levels. This year's Summer Reading theme is "Libraries Rock!" -- and I couldn’t agree more! That's why I joined Friends & Foundation of Howard County Library System. My yearly donation helps provide books as a reward for a child's summer reading effort. And seeing their eyes light up when they receive that book is my reward. That's what it means to be a Friend!" - Nana Owusu-Nkwantabisa, Director, Howard Community College Library and Learning Commons, and member of HCLS Friends & Foundation
