Can’t get enough of Hamilton? On March 16, an acclaimed panel of historical fiction authors – including Caroline Todd, Crystal Hana Kim, and Stephanie Dray (author of My Dear Hamilton) – talk about research and writing from the perspectives of three distinct time periods (p. 4). On April 23, New York Times bestselling author Alafair Burke discusses her new novel, The Better Sister. In this high-octane thriller, two sisters who have been married to the same man must join forces to save the teenaged boy accused of murdering him (p. 5). In April and May, we begin a year-long salute to veterans with screenings of From War to Wisdom, a film that examines the difficult transition from active military duty to ordinary, civilian life. The screenings conclude with a conversation with the film’s producers and directors on May 18 (p. 3). For the younger crowd, local author Seth Waltman returns to read his board book, Super Mom and Dad: Military Heroes at two branches (p. 3). For students, we celebrate academic achievement through the HCLS Spelling Bee, Battle of the Books, and Rube Goldberg Challenge (p. 8). These events are presented as part of our A+ Partners in Education initiative with the Howard County Public School System. We hope to see you at these and the many other classes and events happening at HCLS. And, save the date: the summer reading kickoff happens Saturday, June 1!

March begins with a compelling follow-up to the successful Undesign the Redline exhibit this past fall and winter. Debby Irving, author of Waking Up White, and Lisa Gray, Associate Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion at UMBC, discuss how internalized white superiority perpetuates racism. Join us for reflection and dialogue on March 5 (p. 4). At the end of May, Richard Rothstein discusses his book, The Color of Law, which explores how government housing policies enforced and codified structural racism (p. 5).

meet th e authors

Participate in a timely conversation with Debby Irving, racial justice educator and acclaimed author of Waking Up White, and Lisa Gray, Associate Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion within Campus Life at UMBC. Using historical and media images, Debby examines how she used her white-skewed belief system to interpret the world around her. Socialized on a narrow worldview, Debby explores how she spent decades silently reaffirming harmful, archaic racial patterns instead of questioning the racial disparities and tensions she could see and feel. This workshop supports white people in making the paradigm shift from ‘fixing’ and ‘helping’ those believed to be inferior to focusing on internalized white superiority and its role in perpetuating racism at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels in Howard County and beyond. Includes pauses for reflection, dialogue, and Q&A. HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE (10901 Little Patuxent Parkway) Rouse Company Foundation Building, Room 400 Tue

AUTHOR SALON: ALAFAIR BURKE Registration required.

Bestselling novelist Alafair Burke has her finger on the pulse of domestic noir fiction. With her new book, The Better Sister, she presents a high-octane premise: two estranged sisters who have been married to the same man must join forces to save the teenaged boy accused of murdering him. The family dynamics are even more complex than the premise suggests as their reunion threatens to unearth secrets.

At BB&T we spell partnership “H-C-L-S” because we know they will deliver quality educational experiences to our community. BB&T has been a sponsor of the HCLS Spelling Bee for many years. It makes me proud to see Howard County’s spelling champions fare so well in the National Bee, and it reassures me that my company is making a wise sponsorship investment. Beyond the thrill of the actual competition, spelling bees improve concentration, equip students with public speaking skills, build confidence, and inspire determination. But buzz on the street is that delivering such high quality learning experiences like the HCLS Spelling Bee requires more than public and corporate sponsorship funding. It takes me and YOU!

FRIENDS & FOUNDATION

My personal, individual donation to Friends & Foundation of HCLS makes up the shortfall between good and great. And that's what it means to be a "Friend."
