Summer Reading kicks off June 1 with a day of performances and fun activities at our Miller Branch. Eric Energy engages kids of all ages with an interactive, hands-on science show, and the Grammynominated Milkshake Duo play out-of-this-world tunes that will have you on your feet. Details about the day on p. 4. As part of our new art education collection, we are thrilled to host our first ever artist in residence, Laura Wolf. Stop by the Miller Branch on Fridays or Saturdays as she creates art (p. 3). Bring your curiosity and creativity and be part of an art installation! In conjunction with her focus on wildlife, each branch is hosting captivating classes about owls. Tour all six of our branches to visit In Freedom’s Name: Maryland’s Black Men and Woman and Their Defense of Liberty. Part of this year’s focus of veterans, the exhibition examines most of America’s history from the Revolutionary War through the expansion into the west and the Vietnam War (p. 6). You may also wish to participate in the accompanying Compass Learning Adventure, a self-guided educational experience that gives you an opportunity to design your own learning experience. As summer winds down and we prepare for the start of a new school year, incoming kindergarteners won’t want to miss Kindergarten, Here We Come! This popular class teaches children (and their anxious parents) what to expect in their first year of school, building excitement and soothing nerves. Students even practice boarding a real school bus! For rising sixth graders, Movin’ Up to Middle School offers handy tips by older students, locker combination time trials, and the opportunity to meet new friends (p. 8). Whatever you do and wherever you go this summer, take us with you when you download eBooks or stream audiobooks, music, and movies via hclibrary.org/hclsNow. Best Regards,

“I am an elementary art teacher and freelance artist. My students’ enthusiasm for the natural world has helped to revitalize my own. I often draw inspiration from photographs I’ve taken at various zoos, aquariums, parks, and wildlife refuges. When I paint, I am striving to capture the unique personality of each object and creature; some are beautiful, some are strange, and some are beautifully strange. Many artists choose to anthropomorphize animals, but I most enjoy the peculiarities that make them so distinct from humans.” - Laura Wolf

This workshop is a space in which returning veterans and military families can discuss and process their personal experiences of conflict through the artistic discipline of papermaking. Hand papermaking enables veterans to turn their clothing and uniforms into paper that is then used for visual art or writing. The process of shredding and pulping the material, telling stories and sharing experiences one had in the garments creates a new shared outcome, forging personal relationships, fostering individual investment, and supporting community cohesiveness.
